The 1994 Indy 500 became known for Penske’s beast of an engine. Built by Ilmor in utter secrecy, it aimed to be purpose built for the 500 as at the time it was run under USAC rules (unlike the rest of the races) so the regulations were different. In particular, pushrod engines were allowed.
