I picked up this graphic novel today, and I am so excited to read it! I'm gonna read it next, as soon as I finish my current read.
I'm posting about it here because I think some of you guys might be interested in it. Look at it! It's all cute and sweet-looking, adorable furry animals... but it's about murder and serial killers. xD
Live, laugh, shed blood. Dexter meets Richard Scarryâs Busy, Busy Town in this twisted debut graphic novel!
Donât. Murder. The locals.
This is small-town serial killer, upstanding citizen, and adorable brown bear Samantha Strongâs cardinal rule. After all, thereâs a sea of perfectly ripe potential victims in the big city just beyond the forest, and when youâve worked as hard as Sam to build a cozy life and a thriving business in a community surrounded by friendly fellow animal folk, warm decor, and the aroma of cedar trees and freshly baked apple pieâŠthe last thing you want is to disturb the peace.
So you can imagine her indignation when one of Woodbrookâs own meets a grisly, mysterious demiseâand you wouldnât blame her for doing anything it takes to hunt down her rival before the town self-destructs and Sheriff Patterson starts (literally) barking up the wrong tree.
Cute critters arenât immune to crime in this original graphic novel debut by writer-artist Patrick Horvath.

PARIS IS IN HARLEM Trailer: The musical ensemble dramedy marks Christina Kallasâs third and final installment in her âGun Trilogy,â following previously helmed âThe Rainbow Experimentâ and â42 Seconds of Happiness.â
Christina Kallas writes and directs her third and final installment in her âGun Trilogy,â which delves into the prevalence of guns in America and American culture. The NY-based director previously helmed âThe Rainbow Experimentâ and â42 Seconds of Happiness.â âAs a European filmmaker making films in America, Iâm somewhat obsessed with guns ending up in the wrong hands,â says Kallas as her Slamdance and Galway-debuted feature PARIS IS IN HARLEM, a kaleidoscopic jazz-infused dramedy, is about to hit platforms on Thursday, July 4th. âIn âParis is in Harlem,â I am focusing on the intersecting lives of strangers passing one another on the street, unknowingly linked by music, by hardship, by the city they live inâand by the ever-present possibility of violence.âÂ
The film was shot entirely on location in New York City and is set in 2017, on the day the 91-year-old cabaret law, which banned dancing in bars and initially targeted jazz musicians in NYCâcausing many to leave for Parisâwas repealed. Fittingly, the legendary Harlem nightclub Paris Blues is the center of gravity for the multiple narratives. The film is dedicated to its late proprietor, Sam Hargress Jr. and has won heartfelt reviews including: âa visual masterpieceâ (Film Threat); âa multi-layered narrative thatâs a love letter to jazz and New York Cityâ (HorrorBuzz); âa masterclass in storytellingâ (FilmInk); and âlike Spike Leeâs work, Kallasâs film exists on the lived-in streets of New York, and, in the filmâs triumphant final moments, shows us that no matter what challenging road is mapped out for us, there is always a chance for human connection.â (BRWC)
PARIS IS IN HARLEM concludes the trilogy by tracing the journey of a gun from an active shooter drill in a college to a Jazz night club, intertwining the lives of characters from disparate stories while simultaneously addressing our current era of cancel culture. The film features a large ensemble cast of 22 well-known film and theater actors including Leon Addison Brown (âAmerican Rust,â âThe Knickâ) and SoulĂ©ymane Sy SavanĂ© (âOur Father, The Devil,â âGoodbye Soloâ,) and showcasing some of the most prominent jazz talents of this generation: saxophonist Tomoki Sanders, descendant of the legendary Pharoah Sanders; virtuoso drummer Kojo Odu Roney; guitarist William "Spaceâ Patterson; bassist Marlon Martinez; vocalist Camille Thurman; and last but not least, saxophonist Antoine Roney, brother of the late Grammy-winner Wallace Roney and godson of Dexter Gordon. The soundtrack features their compositions, paying homage to pivotal moments in films like Bertrand Tavernier's âRound Midnightâ, starring Dexter Gordon, the lesser-known âParis Bluesâ by Martin Ritt, featuring Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier, and, of course, Shirley Clarkeâs films, which were a strong inspiration to the filmmaker.
As her film releases just two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Courtâs startling decision to overturn a federal ban on bump stocks which can transform a legal semi-automatic weapon into an illegal machine gun, Kallas explains the motivation behind her âGun Trilogy:â âLike most European filmmakers, I was raised on a diet of American films and TVâand one of the things that these exported to the world was guns as part of our vernacular. Whether it was westerns or gangster movies, thrillers or action movies, or urban films featuring the growing despair of a dysfunctional society, they cannot be imagined without guns. In that sense, there is a dissonance between the political uphill battle for gun regulation in the midst of the rising numbers of mass shootings, and the fact that guns continue to be prominently featured in our art and entertainment. Letâs face it, guns are often portrayed as cool assets, even when they signify social decay. What I am particularly interested in is the ease with which guns can land in the wrong hands whether itâs because of their easy availability, the state of the mental health system, the lack of regulation or, lastly, because of their perceived and perpetuated coolness.â
âThe Rainbow Experimentââcelebrated as a dark and playful 21st-century Rashomonâcenters around an incident in a science class, plunging a public NYC high school into chaos as teachers crumble, students spiral, and the school board launches an investigation. The film grapples with gun control in the educational system, opening with an explosion and culminating in a shooting involving two bereaved parents. In â42 Seconds of Happinessâ, another powerless victimâthis time a woman cheated on by her thoughtless husbandâbecomes a potential perpetrator, seizing power and a false sense of control by obtaining an easily available gun. As one character in âThe Rainbow Experimentâ observes, âItâs the easiest thing to have a gun in America.â
PARIS IS IN HARLEM is now available digitally across major platforms in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.Â

James Pattersonâs 3 Tips for Writing a Great Villain
According to bestselling author James Patterson, the best literary villains are complex bad guys whom readers simultaneously love and hate. Here, James reveals three key writing techniques for creating a memorable villain.
1. Create a Three-Dimensional Villain
When youâre writing a villain, you have to make them three dimensionalâand James knows that readersâ feelings about villains are complex. On one hand, we donât like them. They are, after all, the driving negative force in any narrative. But on the other hand, when they are given interesting back stories, personal traumas, and motivations that drive them (whether we agree with those or not), James say that âthe ethics and morals of readersâ fade away if they really love characters.
Take, for example, Hannibal Lecterâthe evil villain in Thomas Harrisâs book Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal is, of course, a cannibal. Yet heâs one of the most well-known villains of all time, a villain that audience members cheer for and that readers root on. Thatâs because Thomas Harris revealed both the dark side of the character as well as another, unexpected side that readers could empathise with.
2. Humanize the Villain
When youâre writing villains, you have to humanize them if youâre going to get your audience on board. James wrote a bad guy serial killer once, whose family thought he was âa neat guy.â On the surface, he was this great, supportive husband and father. But in his secret life, he was murdering people. Another famous example of a main character with a double life is the murderous antihero Dexter of the television series Dexter, who killed in the name of vengeance. Whether youâre adding a layer of justice or creating a veil of secrecy around your character, try infusing them with some elements of humanity to help the reader connect to the character even more.
3. Equip the Villain With Smarts
Have you ever noticed villains seem to be some of the smartest characters? Theyâre witty and wry, clever as can be. They go on long-winded rants about super-specific topics that the average person wouldnât know about. Is that realistic? Probably not. But James suggests giving up realism for a good story, any day.
Pick a few topics that your villain might be interested in and research them in-depth. Weave those bits through your story, both in plot and in dialogue. Research makes for a more thrilling narrative, and a smarter-than-average villain is always interesting, since it begs the question: if theyâre so intelligent, why would they embark on this life of crime?
When youâre sitting down to draft your villain, give them depth. Give them complexity. Give them humanity. And maybe youâll have audiences cheering when your villain commits acts of cannibalism, too.

Don't Look Back in Anger by @sanssssastark
Teen And Up | Multi-Chapter | 43.1k | Work-in-Progress
Select Tags: The Boys Are Alive - AU, Alternate Universe - High School, Luke is a Soft Boi, Julie is a BAMF, Luke frequently trips over himself in her presence, who can blame him honestly
Luke Patterson, frontman of Sunset Curve, runaway, drop-out, crawling back with his tail between his legs after nearly getting laid out by food poisoning of all things. He needs to pass his classes to keep up his end of the bargain he made with his parents: stay on track to graduate and stay in the band.
Julie Molina, the soulfulness of her voice matched only by the dexterity of her fingers on the keys, silenced for a year after her mother's death. She needs to play, to sing, to do something if she wants to keep her spot in Los Feliz's music program.
And together, they just might do both.
Anonymous says: The song selections are *chef's kiss*. A great mix of songs that inspire each chapter, but I have a very soft spot for the 90s song choices. Luke trips over himself A LOT. It's hilarious and sweet and very on brand. And Julie is indeed a BAMF... Which leads to more awkward Luke. Sparks fly almost immediately. Juke is intense and our favorite soulmates definitely connect very quickly and seem to be finding a little bit of healing and strength in each other.
