I've been following what's been going on with Belphie the kitten and his person, Greer Stothers, has just mentioned pet insurance in a tag on a post and I wanted to give an example from my life backing up why pet insurance can be a good idea and why I think it is worthwhile.
Two years ago my sister's dog had bloat while she was on vacation. The kennel he was staying at recognized symptoms and called my sister to clear them to take him to the emergency vet. My sister is very financially secure and this dog is an enormous part of her life, so she said yes with barely a moment of hesitation. That ended up being about twelve thousand dollars of emergency surgery.
Large Bastard and I got pet insurance for Tiny Bastard the same week because we realized that if someone had presented that option to us, we would have had no choice but to have Tiny Bastard put down, and we didn't want to be put in that position.
I did a lot of research about different kinds of pet insurance and different levels of coverage and annual maximums and deductibles and so on and so forth. Tiny Bastard is a senior dog, so this was going to be expensive no matter what options we went with, so I chose a moderately priced plan with a $500 annual deductible, unlimited annual coverage, that pays 80% of the bills incurred annually below the maximum. What that means is that we pay the first $500 of care totally out of pocket, after which point we are reimbursed 80% of any vet bills for care covered by the plan.
The first year we had this plan I was kind of iffy about it. It's a noticeable monthly expense and we didn't even spend the deductible in vet bills the first year. Except that a month before the policy was set to renew, Tiny Bastard got diagnosed with diabetes. We now have monthly insulin costs and syringe costs; there are tests she has to have regularly to monitor her overall condition and we need to do more frequent vet visits to track symptoms.
Suddenly the insulin alone means that the insurance is break-even within six months and the additional visits and tests are something we can afford instead of something we'd have to put on credit.
Our plan (through ManyPets) covers medication, surgery, diagnostics, medical equipment, and euthanasia and cremation. It doesn't cover pre-existing conditions, joint conditions for dogs who were signed up over a certain age, dental care, spay/neuter, vaccinations, or prescription food but honestly all of that makes me just kind of wish we'd signed her up earlier - her knee problems *would* be covered if we'd had her signed up as a puppy, and the monthly cost would have been lower if we'd signed her up then. And there are at least a few emergency vet bills that I wouldn't still be paying off on my credit card. Hell, I've probably paid more in interest on some bruising she got in a fight three years ago than I have for this policy as a whole.
I am glad that Greer is able to take care of Belphie. I am glad that my sister was able to take care of her dog. But I'm also really, really glad that for a relatively low cost, I would be able to take care of Tiny Bastard if she were catastrophically injured, or if she needed emergency surgery. I'm glad that I'm able to take care of her now with her medications and her additional vet visits.
There are a lot of people who say that pet insurance isn't worth it, especially not for young animals. But if your young animal gets very sick, or gets badly injured, or eats a hairband and needs an emergency endoscopy, then it will probably be VERY worth it. It's a risk/reward question. You feel like you're wasting money if you're paying for a policy that you never use, but honestly that just means you're lucky to have a healthy pet.
I'm lucky that Tiny Bastard was relatively healthy before I got the insurance; I'm also lucky that she was insured when she was diagnosed with a chronic illness that will need lifelong care. This enables me to provide care for her that would otherwise be financially unmanageable, and that makes the insurance *extremely worth it* from my perspective.
And Belphie is a good example of why it's a good idea to get coverage even for very young pets. Greer is recommending it because this kitten has required a tremendous amount of care during a period in his life when it's generally taken for granted that a cat will be healthy. (And Greer is not stupid for forgoing pet insurance - pet insurance is still a relatively new concept and there are lots of people who are leery of it for a number of good reasons)
So I'd say that if you've got a pet or are getting a pet it is very worthwhile to find a pet insurance plan that fits in your budget. There are a variety of plans out there and some are very inexpensive. Check coverage levels (you can even get some with wellness plans that include dental care and vaccinations) and see if there's something that works for you.
I personally don't think I'm ever going to own another pet without having pet insurance. It's ridiculous how much easier it is for me to say yes to diagnostic tests or different treatments than it was before because I know I'm going to be able to fit Tiny Bastard's care into our budget.

Me and my wife need help getting back on our feet since after she almost died from pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thrombosis last year and subsequently was denied access to transitional healthcare because of the health complications that nearly killed her.
We need money to buy hormones online for my wife to be able to continue her transition after getting cut off due to arbitrary risks involving her V-Leiden (even though she is on Eliquis every day and monitored for new clots yearly) and the lack of informed consent laws. The amount of refills I get through my prescription is not enough to support both of us when they're incredibly stringent about how much they're prescribing you at a time.
My wife also desperately needs to see a dentist. Her dental decay has been getting much worse lately due to us not having the financial means for her to have them fixed. She recently had a horizontal crack in her front incisor which has made it impossible for her to eat, something that was already incredibly difficult with her only being able to chew with one side of her mouth due to multiple broken teeth and an impacted wisdom tooth causing the cap from her root canal to fall out.
We're drowning and can't afford to pay for emergency expenses with rent for our mold-infested apartment and rising costs of living eating up practically our entire income every month, it seems almost impossible to move on and get better being stuck in our current situation.
If anyone is capable of helping out it would mean the world to us.
our paypals: queensizeddonger & loserbigsis
$0 / $????
(we have no way to assess the actual costs yet since just seeing a dentist to get an estimate would cost around $100)
Photos below the cut (trigger warning: broken teeth & dental decay)

Summary: The most powerful Avenger is afraid of one thing: dental appointments, or the one where you're a dentist and Wanda is a baby about seeing one
Word count: 2.6k | Warnings: None. This is just good ol' fluff
Ship: Wanda Maximoff x Fem!Reader
Author's note: This has been sitting in my drafts for some time, and while this is a one shot, I might follow up with more :)
Series Masterlist | Main Masterlist
Next part: the follow up
--
Steve and Natasha are barely done with their own routine dental check-ups when the notification of an emergency mission comes through. The Avengers' annual dental visit is typically swift and uncomplicated, but the arrival of their urgent mission turns the day into something far more chaotic.
“Where is Wanda?” Steve asks, scrolling through the mission details on his phone.
Natasha shrugs, sipping on her post-check-up glass of scotch. “I haven't seen her since breakfast.”
Vision appears in the room at that moment, his face expressing the closest thing to exasperation an android can manage. “She’s only now on the chair,” he says, glancing at Steve, whose eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
“Now? But everyone else is done!”
“I had to convince her to come,” Vision sighs. “I found her hiding in the back library. It took me the better part of an hour to persuade her to face the dentist.”
Natasha rolls her eyes at the revelation, trying to suppress her chuckle. The most powerful Avenger, avoiding a simple dental prophylaxis. “We don't have all day, Steve. The mission is critical.”
Steve nods, sliding his phone into his pocket. “We'll leave a note for her. She should meet us ASAP once she's done.”
Natasha gets up from her chair, glancing one last time at Vision, as she quips, “Good luck to whoever is the dentist working on her this year.”
As you approach the dental chair, you take note of the apprehensive figure occupying it. You've already seen a dozen Avengers today, each with their unique quirks and idiosyncrasies.
But Wanda Maximoff, her gaze filled with clear distaste for the situation, seems to take the cake. She's curled in on herself, making her seem smaller than she actually is. The sight of her alone would have been enough to unnerve you, but the intermittent quivers of your dental tools due to an unseen force send a cold shiver down your spine. You can't help but wonder if you've drawn the short straw when they assigned you the patients for today.
You try your best to project an air of calm. Inside, though, your nerves are jangling like alarm bells.
“Wanda, right?” you confirm, trying to keep your voice steady.
She nods, her eyes wide as saucers.
“I promise this won't hurt,” you reassure her, even as your tools continue to rattle on the tray. “It's just a routine check-up.”
A skeptical glance is thrown your way but it's at least some reaction. Her gaze is piercing, and it takes every bit of your collected facade to keep from faltering. An absurd thought flashes across your mind: if you were to meet an untimely demise in your line of duty today, who on earth would inherit the numerous houseplants that have taken over your apartment over the years?
With a nervous smile that Wanda can barely make out behind the surgical mask you wear, you gently ask, "Shall we begin?" Your tone is soothing, carefully modulated to put her at ease.
The poor Avenger takes a deep, long breath before giving you the go-ahead to proceed with the checkup.
For her part, Wanda begins to concentrate on anything other than the feeling of your gloved fingers in her mouth. Her gaze settles on your oversized prescription glasses that lend an air of professional yet friendly vibe. And there’s something about the clean, familiar scent wafting off your white coat that comforts her more than she's willing to admit.
She can’t help it when her mind starts drawing comparisons with last year's dentist—a gruff, no-nonsense man whose hands always seemed cold and who lacked any bedside manner whatsoever. You, on the other hand, are like a breath of fresh air with your calming demeanor and reassuring approach. Wanda blushes at the thought that, admittedly, you’re kind of a nice upgrade.
You begin the examination with meticulous care, your movements deliberately gentle to assure Wanda of your sensitivity to her obvious anxiety. As you carefully check her teeth and gums, you're acutely aware of how much trust she's placing in you, despite her apparent discomfort.
Glancing into her eyes as you angle your dental mirror to inspect her molars, you're suddenly struck by the piercing green of her irises. Even under the harsh clinic lights, they appear incredibly vibrant. Framed by the dark eyeliner she wears, her eyes are sharp and arresting. They follow your every move, staring up at you with an intensity that causes your skin to perspire under your uniform.
You've dealt with many patients over the years, some with eyes equally as fascinating, but something about Wanda's gaze is different. It's as if she's not just watching you but reading you, understanding you in a way that makes you feel exposed.
Your focus starts to waver under her scrutiny, and that's when you notice something strange. The dental tools on the tray beside you begin to quiver more violently, vibrating with an unseen force. Your heart skips a beat, realization dawning on you that Wanda's powers are reacting to her nervousness.
But it's not just her nervousness; Wanda's face takes on a look of surprise, her eyes widening momentarily. You can almost feel her presence in your mind, a subtle brushing against your consciousness.
She's read your thoughts, albeit accidentally.
She knows how captivated you are by her eyes.
Catching yourself, you quickly shift your thoughts to a safer topic–your plants. The vibrant green of Wanda's eyes morphs into the various shades of green gracing the leaves of your beloved indoor jungle. Your Monstera, your string of pearls, your peace lily–
And yet, none of them are a match for the pair of green orbs that your mind keeps going back to. A flush of embarrassment creeps up your neck as you meet her gaze, the unspoken understanding between you making the air in the room feel charged. Wanda's cheeks take on a hint of color, and her control over her powers seems to falter, your tools–and a chair behind Wanda–now levitating a couple of inches from where they originally sat.
“I'm sorry,” she stammers, wide-eyed and apologetic. You barely make out what she’s saying with her mouth still wide open. “I didn't mean to…”
“It's okay,” you reply in a comforting murmur, pausing your examination. The room fills with the soft humming of the overhead light and the subtle scent of sterilized equipment. “I'm here with you. We'll go at your pace. Just breathe.”
Giving Wanda a few moments to calm herself, you pull back, placing the dental tools on the tray beside you. You keep your eyes on Wanda, a soothing smile hidden behind your mask. Her chest rises and falls steadily as she follows your instructions, taking deep, calming breaths.
However, you can't help but glance at the floating items around you, fearing that one of them might go straight for your heart that’s thudding loudly in your ears now. They seem to be suspended in mid-air, almost like a magic trick. Wanda catches your gaze, following it to the levitating objects. The already present color on her cheeks darken, and with a flicker of her gaze, your tools reintroduce themselves to gravity once again.
You don't comment on it. Instead, you simply offer another encouraging smile, masked by your surgical mask, but visible in your eyes. You extend your gloved hand towards the once again earthbound dental tools, feeling the cool metal against your palm.
“Are we good to proceed?” you ask in a soft voice, patiently waiting for her agreement before picking up where you left off.
Wanda doesn’t move, seemingly hesitant to say yes or no.
“Will it help if I talk to you?”
She gives you a small nod in response this time.
“Alright,” you say with a hint of a chuckle. “Don't judge me if I start to sound silly, okay?”
And so you start to speak as you get back to work, recounting random memories and thoughts as you continue with the examination. You talk about funny incidents at work, share stories about your beloved plants, and even admit to that time you almost killed your favorite fern with coffee instead of water. At first, you feel slightly ridiculous, babbling about the care of succulents to an Avenger, one of the most powerful beings on the planet. But as the minutes tick by, you see a change in her. The initial terror in her eyes fades into curiosity, her body relaxes, and she even smiles at some of your sillier anecdotes.
You get lost in talking to Wanda, feeling both delighted and somewhat ridiculous that you're enjoying this one-sided conversation. You're fully aware that she can't respond with an excavator in her mouth, but it doesn't feel like she's just tolerating your chatter. Her eyes are attentive, following your movements, reacting every now and then. Her body language is open, receptive, almost as if she's hanging onto every word.
As for Wanda, something unexpected is happening. She finds herself liking your voice more and more, feeling an unfamiliar pull towards it. It's warm, comforting, and filled with a sincerity that she didn't expect. She even finds herself slightly attracted to it. But it's a foreign feeling, one she doesn't quite understand, especially in this setting.
As you conclude your examination, you realize that one of Wanda's molars needs a filling. It isn't urgent, a situation that could be deferred to another appointment if she wishes.
“Looks like you have a small cavity,” you inform her, meeting her eyes. “It's not of immediate concern, but we should schedule another appointment if you'd like to have it filled.”
To your surprise, Wanda agrees, not just with a polite nod, but with a subtle hint of anticipation lighting up her eyes. She agrees to another date, another round of you poking around her mouth with your scary dental tools. And yet, there's a hint of eagerness that surprises even her.
As you finish your work, you lean back, pulling off your surgical mask and gloves. For the first time, Wanda gets a full view of your face. It's like a silent reveal, one she hadn't been expecting, and it takes her aback.
She finds herself caught in a subtle admiration, a feeling that quickly intensifies as she takes in your features. There's something about your face that she finds herself drawn to, the warmth of your eyes, the curve of your lips, the soft contours of your cheekbones.
And when you smile, her breath hitches slightly. It's a simple gesture, but one that lights up your face, reaching your eyes and causing them to crinkle at the corners. It's genuine, open, and a little bit contagious.
“Thanks for your patience, Doctor...?” Wanda voices, feeling a tad awkward. It occurs to her belatedly that she didn't have the foresight to ask for your name before you started the check-up.
“Just call me Y/N. It's my pleasure,” you reply, your smile deepening, unaware of the effect it's having on the Avenger before you. “I'll see you for that follow-up appointment, then?”
As soon as Wanda is escorted outside by Vision, you release a breath you didn't know you've been holding. Leaning against the counter, you try to calm the racing of your heart, which beats as if you've just run a marathon.
Wanda Maximoff is... quite a surprise. Her beauty, her vulnerability, the way she seemed to really listen to your inane chatter–it's all unexpected, disarming even. You find your mind drifting back to the way her eyes softened, the almost shy smile that graced her lips.
You quickly shake your head, trying to dispel these thoughts. This is unprofessional, you think. She's your patient. A patient who just happens to be one of the world's most powerful individuals. It's nothing more than that.
You glance at the clock on the wall, realizing you've spent more time with Wanda than any other patient today. You should be moving on to your paperwork, getting ready to call it a day.
But as you sit down at your desk, the fluttering feeling in your stomach doesn't subside, and Wanda Maximoff's haunting green eyes remain etched in your mind.
Walking down the corridors of the Avengers compound, Wanda finds herself in step with Vision. As they pass various agents and fellow Avengers, Vision turns to look at her.
“Wanda,” he starts, his voice taking on that concerned lilt that she's grown accustomed to. “I'm detecting unusual signs in your vitals. Your heart rate is elevated, your body temperature has slightly increased, and your pupils are dilated.”
Wanda blinks, feeling an unexpected heat crawl up her neck. Her palms are also feeling slightly clammy, and she has this weird fluttering sensation in her stomach. She tries to brush it off. It must have been the anxiety, right?
“Are you not feeling well?” Vision probes further, halting in his tracks to face her. His eyes scan her face, looking for any visible signs of discomfort. Wanda's mind races, trying to figure out how to downplay her seemingly irrational reaction to a denti–a dental appointment.
“No, Vision. I'm... I'm just fine.” Her voice sounds surprisingly steady to her own ears. She forces a smile onto her face, aiming to reassure her friend.
Vision doesn't seem fully convinced but doesn't push further. They resume their walk, but Wanda can't shake off the feeling that something has changed, something she doesn't quite understand yet. And for some reason, her thoughts keep drifting back to a certain dentist with a soothing voice, warm eyes, and a love for plants.
How did it happen that a dental appointment, of all things, has turned into the highlight of her day?
The kitchen is dimly lit when Vision enters, the only illumination coming from the withdrawn overhead lights. Natasha is there, assembling her favorite late-night snack, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She looks up as Vision approaches, her eyes curious.
“I trust the mission went well?” Vision inquires, noting the subtle signs of fatigue in Natasha's posture.
She offers a half-smile, nodding. “It did. It's all sorted now. How's Wanda after the check-up?”
Vision's eyes narrow slightly, and he hesitates for a moment before responding, “She is... well. The new dentist was quite effective in putting her at ease.”
Natasha smirks, spreading the jelly onto the bread with precision. “Told you a change would do the trick. I still can't believe you managed to convince Tony to switch dentists.”
“And find the perfect replacement,” Natasha adds after some thought, licking the jelly from the knife.
“It was a logical choice. The previous dentist was less than satisfactory, particularly with Wanda.” He pauses, considering something. “But this one... she seemed to have a rather profound effect on her.”
Natasha raises an eyebrow, looking up from her sandwich. “Profound effect?”
“Yes,” Vision says thoughtfully. “I detected unusual signs in her vitals afterward. Increased heart rate, heightened body temperature, a certain... excitement in her demeanor. It was quite unexpected.”
Natasha's eyes widen slightly, and a mischievous smile begins to form on her lips. “You don't say?”
Vision gazes at the digital interface on his palm, a soft hum of approval in his voice. “Indeed, she has also filed for a leave of absence a week from now. She has another dental appointment, but this time at the doctor’s private clinic.”
Natasha pauses, her sandwich halfway to her mouth.
Vision meets her gaze, uncertainty flickering in his eyes. "Do you think it could mean something?"
Natasha shrugs, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “Who knows, Vis?” she says, taking a huge bite of her sandwich. “Maybe it's just a good dentist.” And then with a wink and a knowing smile, she adds, “Or maybe…”
She leaves the thought hanging, deliberately ambiguous, and exits the room, her satisfied crunching echoing down the hallway.
Vision is left standing in the kitchen, confusion etched across his synthetic features. He considers the day's events, attempting to analyze how Wanda suddenly managed to conquer her most irrational fear.
Humans really are something.

∆ please help us
we can not afford any of our basic needs
i usually try to keep this as light as possible, but i have put this off for long enough that i have to post this. me and my partner desperately need help. we are just two gay people trying to make it alone here with absolutely no support system. *remaking because the first post died
who we are: im j (or jet), im 24 year old trans guy whose had this account since 2014. i married my partner in 2018, we even met on tumblr when we were younger, we've been together for years. my partner is disabled (diagnosed with autism and seizure disorder and others)
what we need: basic needs, help with vet care, dental emergency assistance and general support. our cat had an emergency surgery two years ago that means he needs to be on a prescription diet (hills urinary food) for his entire life. the vet suddenly said we need to bring him in again to get his prescription renewed and we cant order any more food for him until then, which he will not survive without, and he is not allowed to eat any alternative food without risking his life. we have less than half of a 8 lb bag of it which will not last him through the next month. with the vet, food, and ubers to get to the vet and to the only place they sell the food = 200
to try to summarize our situation, we were kicked out by family and made officially homeless for the first time last year. this is right after we moved across states (wa to az) to support my partners family upon their request, only to be subjected to abuse and kicked out directly due to homophobia in an unfamiliar state after a few months. this left both of us and all of our animals entirely homeless. we luckily have an apartment now but our situation isnt stable. we lost all of our belongings at this time, everything we had built, and have not been able to replace them as we have very fixed income. my partner is especially affected by this situation, as it was traumatizing, and they have just had to power through trauma after trauma because of poverty, more than i can say.
i also have severe and painful dental problems that are not covered by medicaid in az and i have no way to afford. this includes wisdom teeth, root canals, and many cavities that will turn into that crazy expensive treatment if i don't fix it. some may remember my post about this (+this) showing the work i need. i cant keep ignoring it, because they are worried about two of the cavities becoming root canals, and i want to prevent another infection, but thats at least 250 each i also lost a cap and need to replace it to save the tooth, but that's at least 600.
we are still not going to be able to afford rent in future months because our EBT was delayed last month and i had to spend money we don't have, and without student loan forgiveness, my partner will not have loans anymore so we are in serious jeopardy even affording rent, let alone bills. our pets (2 cats 1 small dog) also desperately need vaccinations, which is dangerous to keep going this overdue without with their health problems. our dog has also been limping for the past week and he needs to be seen when that is ever possible, at least 65 plus ubers.
any donations would go first to the vet appointment and cat food, then the other needs in order of priority. will keep updating this, i know its a lot and i really don't expect anything as i know it's well over 1000 for it all, i am begging for help with any of this.
we are both students, we are trying to work towards stability, while being stuck here. i do everything i can to bring in money to support us on my own. we make 200 less than rent is monthly. i am in school to become a caseworker so i am aware of a lot of resources in my area, and have applied for everything, but we can not do this alone which is why i have to ask for help. i am so sorry for having to do this but i appreciate any support that i do have because of this website. you guys literally save my life. helping out other poor people and getting helped out on here has been the most compassion ive ever been a part of. dollars, even pennies, worth of donations has kept my cat safe, has affected me in real ways. it actually matters to us, no matter the amount.
thank you anyone who reblogs, donates anything at all, or reaches out

A Rant— Sorry
I haven’t been writing because I’ve been dealing with finance issues. A while ago I had a sever kidney infection that ended with me getting a 1400$ medical bill from the radiology department in the hospital. On top of that I also received a 1000$ medical bill from the hospital itself. That’s 2400$ for a bad kidney that I CANT afford. I’m trying to find a second job because of these bills and the stress is taking away from me wanting to add to No Cut Strings. That doesn’t mean it won’t be updated but it does mean I’m asking for patience when it comes to updates.
I’m fucking pissed that I owe so much money because of a kidney infection. If I hadn’t gone to the doctor I would have ended up in kidney failure and it would have been worse but it’s still incomprehensible that survival has a cost. That HEALTH has a cost. My lowest insurance premium is 280$ and I would still be paying 70% of the cost. It wouldn’t cover emergency visits, eye, or dental. I’d still fully pay for prescriptions. I’m tired of bills. Im tired of being broke. I’m pissed that there isn’t affordable health care despite the fact it’s advertised. I’m just done with our health system in general.
Americans are some of the most unhealthy people in the world and there are reasons but rn I think a big reason is no one can afford to be healthy. Healthy food is twice the cost of junk food. Gym equipment costs more than a new bed. Gym memberships cost more than tv platforms. Dying is less expensive than going to a fucking hospital.
It’s bullshit. I’m pissed and have no creativity right now because I’m stressed to hell. I’m 👌 close to moving somewhere with free healthcare but can’t because I DONT HAVE THE MONEY.

Why a £200+ Trip to a Private Dentist Landed Me in Hospital (not clickbait)
Basically, I've had this weird hard mass/lump in my upper left jaw for the past two years. It feels like part of the bone has gone wonky or something, and it appeared pretty randomly. As it hasn't been causing me pain and I feel perfectly fine otherwise, I didn't do anything about it. I had one on the other side (though slightly smaller) a few years ago and that disappeared as randomly as it came. I assumed the same would happen and haven't really thought much of it.
Anyway, a month or so ago, I had to see a dentist about an unrelated dental issue - I had pain in a lower-left molar and it felt cracked. They reviewed, x-rayed, and filled the tooth, in a relatively painless procedure. Whilst there, however, they did their due diligence and raised concerns about the lump because they had no idea what it was, and couldn't rule out that it might be cancerous.
In an admirable display of thoroughness, they sent their xrays to the hospital and helped me as I dried my tears. You can't throw the C Word around with my family medical history and expect me not to panic, after all.
A couple of weeks later and I'm being poked and prodded by a specialist who looks at the xrays and listens to my anecodotal experience and thinks it's highly unlikely it's anything malicious (for a myriad of reasons) but doesn't know what it actually is.
He scheduled a CT scan and a biopsy and asks if, while I'm under local for the biopsy, I'd like them to remove a wisdom tooth that, according to the xray the dentist sent, is rotting under the gum line. The tooth didn't hurt and wasn't bothering me but if they think it may cause a problem later and I'll already be numb, they may as well take it out. In for a penny and all that...
Two weeks later, I was scanned in a process akin to sticking my head in a washing machine that takes literally 5 minutes. A week after that (this past Tuesday), and I was lying in a dentist chair, jabbed with about 5 or 6 doses of something that left my face numb for nearly three hours, and am now minus a tooth and part of whatever the mass in my face is. I was stitched up, given a prescription of antibiotics and told to salt water rinse my mouth 3-4 times a day.
I was also told that the tooth they removed wasn't a wisdom tooth but a supernumerary tooth of another kind, likely a canine. I just assumed the tooth hadn't come through properly and that's why it was rotting but no. In a bizarre and rare twist of inherited genetics, my mouth decided to grow a random tooth where it shouldn't be. My mystery mouth continues to baffle maxillo-facial specialists across the county.
Test results will be mailed to me but I likely won't hear about that for a while. My face is swollen to buggery (but it's going down!) and the stitches, while dissolvable, are a little irritating.
Basically waiting for the next phase which depends on the results of the biopsy. Whatever it throws up, I'll likely be needing a certain level of facial surgery but results will determine how they go about it.
And all because I needed an emergency filling.

I finished my npl and placement yesterday so here’s free vet advice that everyone asks for
Insure your pets, in dogs and cats it is 100% worth it. And try to get to cover for the highest amount that you can afford. I can go into more detail about pet insurance if you want
Most flea treatment that contains ‘fipronil’ will not work, fleas have become immune to it. Often times only prescription flea medications will work or a seresto collar
If your dog is going in for a planned surgery, bath them the day before, make sure they go to the toilet the morning of and if your feeling like really making your vet nurses happy, cut their beard as short as possible.
Don’t breed your pet if you cannot afford a caesarean, ask for an estimate for one at your local and out of ours vets
If your male cat is constantly trying to pee but can’t, that is an emergency you need to take him to the vet straight away
If your rabbit or guinea pig stops eating or pooping that is an emergency you need to take them to the vet
If you have a deep chested dog and their stomach is swollen, they cannot lie down / rest, they’re salivating a lot and unsuccessfully trying to vomit, this could be an emergency you need to take them to the vet straight away
Euthanasia can be a kindness to some animals, I promis your pet isn’t angry at you for getting them put to sleep, they’re out of pain (mental or physical) now and you did the right thing
If your debating whether or not your pet needs to see a vet, just ring up and ask your vets
Your pet being overweight can be as dangerous for their health as them being underweight, check body condition scores and ask your vet nurse for weight advice if your not sure
H fronted dog harnesses such as Julius k9 harnesses can damage your dogs shoulders, especially if they pull a lot. Y fronted ones are safer.
Don’t get a new pet if you cannot afford routine vet bills, if you don’t have at least £100 you can spare for your pet to see the vet, you cannot afford that pet.
Vaccinate your pets, every year.
Try to have some sort of good dental health routine for your pet, dental sticks now and then don’t work. Enzymic toothpaste, plaque off, aqua dent, hills T/D do work.
Learn what pain looks like in your pet, search Glasgow pain score or ‘species’ grimace scale for more info. Remember, if you would be in pain in your pets condition, they are in pain and need prescribed pain relief.
Don’t give pets human over the counter medication unless you have specific instructions from your vet to do so. So many human medications can be toxic to pets.

I'm having a stressful shitty day because I've put off my dental health for too long and I was in so much pain last night I was about to rip my own teeth out but almost all of them and my face was hurting so it wouldn't have done any good. I had a prescription pain pill which made me itch the entire night so I'm exhausted AND in pain. Then I had to call a bunch of places that left me feeling hopeless and I ended up getting into a stupid argument with Chris and like yelling and acting a little crazy, I'm not proud of that but I guess it's fine now. We get over stuff quick. I finally got an appointment next week to get my mouth fixed and I'm still so stressed about waiting and potentially feeling like I did last night again.. And the emergency room is useless, they don't do anything to fix your teeth except refer you to a dentist that takes 3+ weeks to get you in for an *emergency, * fucking America man. Our health care is a joke. I also need antibiotics because I'm certain it's infected and I do not want to die from something stupid and avoidable.
I desperately need a nap and some nutrious food before I pass out. Ellie is doing a timed test on the computer though so I have to stay awake and oooh God my eyes burn so bad. I had a full blown panic attack this morning and ended up throwing up because I couldn't fucking calm down. I hate when that happens. I feel like so many things have made me cry in the past month I just need a vacation from life and all the stress it carries.

At the source, the thread continues: This does not mean all your medical care is then covered by insurance. Nope, not even close. Most doctors visits have a co-pay, meaning you pay this to even be seen. It's anywhere from $20 to $200 depending on emergencies. Insurance also requires you to pay a deductible before they kick in. So let's say your deductible is $1000. That means for each visit, you owe $1000 before they start covering. But they "negotiate" with hospitals, so an MRI out of pocket might cost $5000, but through insurance only costs $400, so you pay $400.
After awhile, there is a "max out of pocket" which means you pay $20,000 out of pocket for all these little visits and then insurance will cover anything further 100% for the year.
Oh, but insurance doesn't cover everything. They agree to certain exclusions... like maybe they don't cover an ambulance ride or only partially cover major dental. Oh and they typically don't cover regular dental or eye care at all (that's a different insurance you buy).
And the insurance only negotiates with certain doctors and clinics... so if you don't use them they only cover your care 50% instead of 80% and the deductibles are higher.
But, if you get hospitalized, the insurance might cover the facility and nurses, but the doctors can be out of network, so you have to pay more without any say in the matter. And medical facilties, even ERs, can just choose not to take any insurance. It isn't a requirement they take it.
Now for prescriptions and treatments. So, let's say you do everything right. You use all in-network doctors and facilities, pay your money, so you should be good?
Nope.
Insurance companies can step in and dictate your care.
So let's say you bang up your knee and need an MRI plus surgery. The doctor agrees and you agree, but the insurance company says "No, you need physical therapy first." So in order to have the MRI plus surgery covered, you now need to go through months of physical therapy before it will be approved. You could always just pay outside of insurance, but now you are paying $12k of your money instead of $3k and months of pain.
There are plenty of other caveats too that I didn't even cover.
So basically, you can have medical insurance, get into a major accident, and still go bankrupt because I don't know many people with $40k just lying around.
But politicians and insurance lobbyists keep telling us we should be grateful to only have to pay that $40k instead of hundreds of thousands of dollars!
And remember, even if you are perfectly healthy and need just a checkup, you are paying $10,400 every year anyway.
Medical insurance in the US is a billion dollar profit industry. It is also complete and utter garbage.
Oh and keep in mind.... NONE of this is taught in schools or anywhere. This is knowledge I've gained completely on my own. And this barely scratches the surface of how complicated this system is.
You think the majority of Americans understand how insurance works?
I like how there isn't any arguing in this giant thread. Just people coming together with angry and sad resignations that the US health insurance system is a giant trash fire.
Lots of people have asked why people living in the US just accept this system. It's pretty easy: classism, racism, ableism, and sexism.
You see, everyone pays the same for insurance at a company. You think the CEO making billions is going to experience that $400 per pay period the same as the junior employee making $30k per year?
On top of that, the Black and other minority communities are more likely to have claims denied or receive lesser care because insurance companies won't pay as much for their care. If they can even get insurance coverage to begin with (a whole other issue).
Disabled folk also receive lesser care. If you are disabled after an injury, insurance companies can even dictate what type of prosthetic you receive or at home care that's available (hint, practically nothing).
Women are also affected by insurance claim discrimination, but not as much as disabled or minority folk. If you are Trans, more and more states are blocking to even cover the care you need. This is all justified because of the risk you will need future care. If it is highly likely you are in a risk category to either 1) not be able to pay the adjusted bills or 2) need further/lifelong care, then you get treated as such with higher bills, different care, and/or denied claims.
So the current system benefits rich white men the most. And we all know how much most of them like to admit their privilege and work to change these systematic issues against a billion dollar industry.

Help two disabled trans girls make it through July
Me and my wife had to completely drain both our bank accounts at the beginning of the month paying rent and back rent from last month. And we still have $675 in utilities and internet bills coming up in a week. I don't know how we're gonna be able to feed ourselves let alone afford our hormones and my wife's Ozempic($185 per 4 weeks)
We're already been out of hormones for weeks with not being able to justify refilling my prescription because of the financial pressure we've been under. We've both been completely cut off from any kind of familial financial support, mainly my parents essentially just telling us to "figure it out ourselves" when they know what we're living on isn't sustainable at all and not nearly enough to facilitate having savings for emergencies.
Meanwhile we've still had continuing hardships with my wife's dental health, she's still has over a dozen cavities, 4 chipped teeth and a broken impacted wisdom tooth that needs extraction as soon as possible. At this point she can only chew with 1/3 of her jaw very slowly and it really hurts me to watch her go through this every day
I'm trying to get a part-time job but currently all I'm being offered are internships that don't start til the end of July/start of August and I still don't know if there's any chance of me receiving any sort of salary or compensation for the job I'll be doing..

Wisdom tooth
Last post fic events one shot. I saw this one post about someone's shenanigans under the influence of anaesthesia so I just went "you know what? That's prime Kara bullshit lol" this is very much a crack story. Side note: I'm European so IDK fully how your clinics fully work. I HC Leo as poly bi. There's mention of it here.
Rating: T
Enjoy:
There were a lot of things that working a night shift at an emergency dental care got Timothy desensitized. He thought that by that point nothing could shake him. That was until a 7 feet tall turtle man walked in, carrying a tiny, grumpy-looking woman in his arms. He was holding her, under her arms as if she was a naughty cat. Just dangling there, resigned to her fate.
“Uuuuuhhh,” was all that came out of Timothy’s mouth as his eyes bulged out of his skull and his brain just refused to process for a second.
“Do you do emergency tooth extraction?” The turtle man asked.
“Ahwwa-,” Tim blinked a couple times before his training kicked in. “Yes, yes we do.”
“Excellent,” the creature sighed with relief. “She needs a removal.”
Timothy looked at the sulking woman. Her jaw was swollen and she clearly was in pain. She had tears in her eyes.
“How much is it?” The turtle man asked again.
“The, uh, the total cost is given after the surgery but it should be about 400 to 700$ depending on how difficult the procedure gonna be and how many teeth we're removing,” Tim recited the line.
“Alright,” the monster put down the lady, who stood on her own two feet, trembled and immediately reached for the creature’s hand. “She’s terrified of dentists and we, unfortunately, left her hearing aids at home. Is there anyone who knows ASL? Your site said there should be someone.”
At first, Tim thought this might have been some sort of weird kidnapping situation but the more he watched the odd couple he realized that he was very wrong.
“Yeah, I know some,” he nodded and pulled out some forms. He walked the man through the process and got the necessary details.
The turtle’s name was Donnie. It further humanized the creature in Tim’s eyes.
“Alright, that’s it,” Tim folded the papers. “I’ll get the doctor.”
“Right. Oh!” Donnie stopped him. “There’s something you need to know. I will need to leave so someone else will pick her up but," he placed both hands on Tim's shoulders looking very serious. "Do NOT leave her alone. She burns through anesthesia like crazy and will wake up sooner than you think,” he stressed his instructions. “Trust me.”
“Sure,” Tim replied, thinking that Donnie was overreacting.
He wasn’t.
Two hours and four wisdom teeth later, Kara, the tiny woman, was wheeled to the recovery room and left there to sleep off the anesthesia. They were expecting her to be out for about an hour maybe. How wrong they were.
About 15 minutes later Timothy had to intercept a very much out-of-it Kara, who was trying to enter the surgery room.
He grabbed her. <No, no,> he signed clearly in her face. <Stay here.> he sat her on the bed in the recovery room.
Five minutes later he had to stop her from going to the men’s bathroom and later she almost climbed up the medical garbage disposal.
Finally, someone came to pick the patient up.
“I’m here for the troublemaker,” she said.
Relieved by the arrival of the cavalry, Timothy couldn’t be happier to be free of Kara. He gave the woman named Cheryl all the prescriptions and instructions they would need and happily waved them both bon voyage.
He needed a career change.
Kara fell asleep in the car. She was snoring a storm when they got to the lair. Everyone decided it was for the best as drugged up Kara was chaos agent Kara… more than usual.
Unfortunately, Cheryl couldn’t pick up the painkillers. She had to race to the other side of town for some job emergency. Leo wasn’t home as he and his partners were spending that weekend together. Mikey was cut from the world busy mixing his next hit hip-hop album. Splinter was meditating, forbidding his sons from interrupting. Raph promised to look after the misfit while Donnie raced to April and ask her to get the meds before the menace woke up.
Assured that his big brother got it, Donnie left. Unfortunately, Murphy’s Law exists. Proximity alarm tripped and since Mikey was still in his own world Raph went to check it out.
That was the moment Kara woke up. Deciding she was feeling too hot she stripped and ventured into the lair only clad in underwear. She climbed the kitchen cabinets looking for food but decided in a brief spark of wisdom that consuming a whole packet of PopTarts might not be the best move after surgery. She got instead into the soda pulling out the last can of Raph’s favourite flavour. She tripped a little over the PopTart boxes she didn’t put back into the cabinets. On her way out of the kitchen, she saw Leo’s katanas.
Her drugged-up brain decided she was still hungry and it would be great to cut some cold pizza with the giant swords. It turned out to be awkward and definitely too big for her but she did it. With a slice in hand, she went to the leisure part of the lair and fired up the gaming console.
Half an hour later Donnie and Raph returned at the same time. They almost had the Spiderman stand-off but then saw their home.
“Oh gosh,” Donnie whined seeing the carnage. There were clothes strewn from his room to the kitchen. Leo’s katana, covered in cheese, stuck in a chair, PopTart boxes everywhere.
“How?!”  Raph grabbed his head and raced to the kitchen where Kara left the fridge open. “DONNIE!!” He yelled horrified at the discovery.
Donnie’s blackboard was wiped clean with a large “SUCK IT, BITCHES” written across it. He rubbed a hand over his face. Good thing he always took photos of his formulas before leaving. Living with Mikey taught him to do that.
The TV was on with their latest video game. The one they have been trying to pass for weeks. With a victory screen in clear display.
“I’ll be damned,” he whispered, impressed then chuckled and shook his head.
He found the menace curled up in his bed, wrapped up in his biggest hoodie, softly snoring. She looked so innocent. He leaned down and kissed the top of her head.
“You are so lucky, I love you,” he whispered.
She stirred but didn't wake up, turning on her side. So cute. Like a kitten.
“Wow, guys, what happened here?” Mikey finally emerged from his Mikey cave.
"Kara on drugs, is what," Raph informed him. "I swear we should have put her in jail when we had the chance."
Donnie came out of his room and started picking up Kara's things. “Come on guys, let’s clean up before Leo gets home."
"You owe me soda, man!" Raph grumbled, yanking Leo's katana out of the chair. He almost tripped on his ass as it was released.
"Hey, Donnie?" Mikey called from the other end of the lair lifting a pair of red panties up.
Donnie slapped a hand over his face. Yup. She was so lucky she was cute.

"You're doing great! You're a real trooper!"
TMI medical/dental/etc. stuff and things that were traumatic for me adjacent to that beyond cut, jsyk.
Okay. So what you need to know for background sake is that I have not had ANY non-urgent/emergency medical anything done since...considerably before covid started, for Reasons that look like this, as I think of them:
Phone anxiety from hell - I can override it for work or in a real emergency but it's one of the worst mental spoon drains. Probably related to the days when phone calls not from family or my very closest friends were 90% bill collectors and 9% other stuff I really didn't want to deal with.
Fear of committing to an appointment, not being able to keep it for whatever reason, and then getting dropped by the practice - this happened to me once with the only endodontist who would take my insurance without, like, a six-month wait.
Multiple awful experiences taking kids to appointments and them not getting appropriate care, including but not limited to the time my son's former primary care doc wanted to prescribe estrogen-containing birth control pills to deal with menstrual dysphoria, the time we got kicked out of the ER with my daughter, and the time the other ER threatened to call CPS on us because we were supposedly letting our preteen kids drink hard liquor and watch porn (NO????????) instead of dealing with the reason we were there.
Multiple awful experiences my husband has had, including the time he had a hypertensive crisis but as soon as they heard he was on psych meds they assumed he was also using illegal drugs and possibly committing DV (no???), the time the "Wellness Management Clinic" told him to crash diet AND divorce me if I refused to crash diet with him, and the time the primary care doc's record office confused the Vicodin he got with his wisdom teeth extraction with an ongoing daily prescription.
The horrible unethical therapist I had 15ish years ago, yikes.
I'm a fat woman with adult-diagnosed ADHD, and my last primary care doc was all "you don't really need Strattera because your ADHD isn't that bad, you got to this appointment on time just fine!" (CLEARLY this woman had never heard of Appointment Mode. Sigh.)
Thanks to the above, I'm afraid of being seen as "doctor-shopping" or drug-seeking, as well as just getting yelled at for being fat and not having been to the doctor in way too long.
So yeah. I get my shots, I go to urgent care when something obvious needs urgent care (possible strep, the stress fractured foot earlier this year), but I haven't had regular anything done in way too long.
I figured the first step in dealing with this was to get back in therapy. So I found a practice that would book new patients online, and there I selected a therapist who is queer and a parent, because (as I said to them) "there's a whole lot I just won't have to explain!" And I wrote on my intake form that one of the big things I wanted to work on was my medical anxiety, because it is actively causing Problems.
Next, while bringing my son to get dental work done and noticing that he seemed very comfortable with that practice, I decided "since I'm in the waiting room anyway, let's get me in and get this party started, I know there is a mess in my mouth." And I've had the botched-root-canal tooth pulled, which was apparently a challenged, and half of my mouth has had the periodontal deep clean with the other half to be done in two weeks, plus a couple of fillings and prep and temp crowns for a bridge to fill in where a tooth was pulled before.
And the whole time I keep hearing that I'm doing great! And that's helping so so much tbh when I expect to just be yelled at and treated with scorn and that's...not what is happening. It makes me feel like maybe I can go to the actual doctor and have it not be awful, too?
I'm trying.
