Re-watched My Father's Dragon made Me wanted to do a slight take on Elmer's Future, as well as his Children since the Books confirms he has 1 Son and 1 Daughter (Yes, really. It's confirmed that he actually does have 2 Children of his Own) since I wanted to do an Interpretation of what his Kids would look like in Cartoon Saloon's Film Adaptation (even though we only did hear His Daughter narrating the Story throughout the Whole Movie).

The Wife you see whose the Mother of Elmer's Kids is defiantly Callie from the Movie. Yeah, I technically ship them since The End as I can at least sense some potential in these Two Together

(I mean, she literally did her own Dragon interpretation & wore a hat resembling someone else before Elmer could even met Boris on the Island, can you blame her?).

And yes, that stuffed plush you see right here is rather (not just an Easter Egg), but a simple *hint*, *hint*. 😏

The Dragons of My Childhood: In Remembrance of Ruth Stiles Gannett

Ruth Stiles Gannett, author of the My Father’s Dragon trilogy, passed away on June 11 at the age of 100. I can’t overstate how important she was to my early childhood.  My elementary school was part of a program to encourage reading, and we could choose one book to take home. I was in first grade, and I decided on The Dragons of Blueland (the third in the trilogy after Elmer and the Dragon)…

that would be the dream, as long as whoever meddled with My Father's Dragon to make its story Like That isn't involved. Still a bit salty about how that one turned out.

(Whoever wrote it somehow managed to make My Father's Dragon worse as an adaptation than the first HTTYD film was despite actually keeping the premise of their source material intact and they didn't even have the decency to make their script have an equally good story to the thing they were supposed to be adapting.)

Something I’ve been noticing a lot in my current rewatch is how Rayla and Soren are foils…Soren being the failed crownguard (“failed” in large part bc of his father’s choices) who ends up on a quest to kill his little king… Rayla trying to make up for her parents’ failures as dragonguards and going every extra mile to protect Zym but taking Ezran under her protection as well (sometimes FROM Soren)…, Soren runs Viren through for trying to kill Ez but he’s just an illusion, the real Viren is trying to kill Zym, and Rayla is prepared to die to stop that…then Rayla goes but Soren stays, and when she comes back he’s taken up her role as the moral center of the show, arguing points that she used to make

I tried to see if you’d written anything about these two being foils specifically but tumblr search is… you know lol. I would love it if you could point me to a relevant meta if there is one! If there isn’t, I hope my thoughts were interesting lol they make me emotional

Y'know funnily enough I don't think there ever was a dedicated Soren&Rayla from almost anyone (of course I could've missed it, but at least not from me) precisely cause from what I remember of early post-s3 arc 1 days, their foil relationship was just... a general fandom consensus of everyone going "Oh yeah that checks out" and kinda left at that.

After all, Soren is the princes' sworn protector who tries to kill them, makes his way back onto the right side, and then 'kills' Viren (his father) in order to protect them... whereas Rayla is their sworn killer who defects from her father in order to protect those same princes, and then she actually kills Viren (if Aaravos and Claudia hadn't intervened) in the same episode. More than that, they both leave behind their previous "hey kill these kids" roles in favour of being a Protector of their respective princes (Soren with Ezran, Rayla with Zym) respectively likewise in 3x09.

You're absolutely right that Soren and Rayla both rely a lot on their physical fighting skills, and this parallel in regards to failure always stands out to me in S3:

Soren: As crownguard, it was my job to make sure that nothing happened to him. No matter what. So when the Moonshadow elves came I did everything I could to protect him. But it wasn't enough. I just... don't want to fail you, too. Rayla: It's me, and it's all my fault. I failed them. I let them all down. They're right to reject me. I'm not good enough, and I never will be.

as does this one for Runaan-Viren, because Runaan may have brought his teenage daughter on an assassination mission, but she's never seemingly scared of him the way Soren is of Viren

even if both fathers take issues with 'fear born' weakness at least in theory

And of course there's some other parallels scattered throughout, which makes sense: 1x01-1x03 is basically Rayla speedrunning Soren's S1-S3 arc of perpetuating the cycle of violence to actively trying to stop it by joining forces with your previous 'enemy'.

I think in a lot of ways Soren was exactly the sort of human Rayla had prepared her whole life to kill -- he's proud, he lies, he's not a 'good' person (at first) -- but of course, now they're good friends and it's very sweet to see. Arc 2 has less direct foils, but it's still there, y'know? Just more quietly in the background.

For example, enough has changed since 2x07 that now in 4x05 their roles have virtually switched, since Soren is the one campaigning to save the dragon while Rayla, although not the aggressor, is saying to walk away. I expect S6 Rayla to take some of Soren's 'protector' quality on further in regards to "doing everything you can" when Callum gets possessed. Possible 5x08 parallels also stand out to me with the concepts of identities (names), ownership vs agency, and compassion against the enemy currently wailing on you through future possessed!Callum and Elmer parallels.

The two are also in for a real pickle since they're the most "these people are the bad guys, we're the good guys" in the show... and it's like sir your sister is evil and ma'am your boyfriend is going through a corruption arc, you're in for some rude awakenings. That said they do have their unbreakable bonds of love with Claudia and Callum respectively, so who knows. It'll all work out. (Eventually.)

On that note we can also see some parallels between 2x02 and 3x03 perhaps... Rayla accuses Soren of trying to kill Ezran but explains it poorly, so Callum gives her as much as he can but doesn't side with her in the moment (which to be fair it is Quite a leap so like Callum you're so valid) VS Soren poorly explaining Viren asking him to kill the princes and Claudia not siding with him. The difference is that in the face of more evidence in favour of Claudia + Soren, Callum still sides with Rayla, and in the face of more evidence against Viren ("You'll understand when you see the first to change" -> "Claudia, you're changing too"), Claudia still sides with Viren, but I digress.

I'd also argue that Ezran is the moral centre of the show (at least to me) simply because he's the only one in the main cast who hasn't entered the 1) you did terrible things in the name of love/protective relay and 2) he's pretty measured and compassionate 99% of the time (but I do love the 1% when he's not let me tell you).

I talked about it in this meta (which is 2+ years old jc) about how like a good moral line event horizon measuring stick is "how does this character treat Ezran" and if they're treating him poorly they're not doing the right thing, and if they're treating him well then they Are, but it doesn't go into S4 or S5 so like. Mileage may vary

Last but not least: I do have a Sorayla tag for headcanons edits brotp content in general so if you want more of them, that's what I'd recommend, with fics such as "flower crowns" (oneshot) and "if heaven and hell decide" (completed multichap, 60k) for their dynamic

Time to complete the cycle! In games where I have two rivals that can be named, I usually name the third character Elgleef, which is a combination of Bayleef and Elgyem! It's to be the grass and psychic-type to Crocfoo's water and fighting-type (Croconaw + Mienfoo), and I'm strong against both of Elgleef's types (Zorquil = Quilava + Zorua) being fire and dark-type! When drawing Elgleef's design, I found it difficult to figure out how to make it more appealing to me, and I found myself kinda mimicking the style of Gimmighoul... and a bit of Elmer, the dragon from "My Father's Dragon". I want to make her neck longer, but I am struggling to get it looking right.

So, Elgleef was a character I was figuring out personality-wise as well. I was debating whether to make her outwardly soft or if I wanted to try another personality. I ended up making her more of a cold and serious character with a passion for chemistry/alchemy. She rarely shows a smile, and is more oblivious to social things, such as Crocfoo's crush on her. Also, don't get in the way of her work.

This one was a lot of fun drawing out! I made the leaf on her head like this to represent the "Y" on Elgyem's head, then gave two of Bayleef's neck leaves to represent the curves around the Y. The curved lines around her arms, neck, legs, tail, and belly were just taken from Elgyem, though I added a few more to make the design better. She also has Elgyem's hands and... "fingers"? I guess? I made it so vines can shoot out of them, but also be a source of psychic energy. And then both have a small tail, so she just gets a smol tail! Then I gave her the feet of Bayleef.

To be honest, I had the struggle designing her with Bayleef qualities and had more fun putting in Elgyem stuff. Which is ironic, since I have the opposite problem where I had trouble putting in Zorua qualities onto Quilava. :> Can't wait to see what colors Elgleef will have!

What I'd like to see in the seventh season of The Dragon Prince

Status Post #11309: Now that season six has arrived on Netflix and that the third arc now back in the planning stages as season 8-10, pending a greenlight from the streaming service, here's what I'd like to see in the upcoming seventh season, which will be titled Book Seven: Dark and will air between the latter half of this year or during next year, probably summer. That said, I hope we'll get a great conclusion to Mystery of Aaravos like having Callum and Rayla getting married in a flashforward and so on.

Claudia and Terry's redemption

While a friend of mine find the former an inconsistent mess of a character and the latter uninteresting who doesn't do much to the story, I'm in the opinion that they'll find redemption, especially the former since I doubt she'll remain Aaravos' apprentice, given that the fallen Startouch Elf himself has plans for Callum and there are moments in the recent season confirmed that she still has some good inside of her.

She's definitely going to know the truth behind her father Viren's death by that he sacrificed his life to stop Sol Regem and Aaravos than being killed by the tyrannical dragon as punishment as well as realising that Terry was right about Aaravos' motive is revenge.

Flashback anthology episode

What the show needs is definitely an episode in vein of its spiritual predecessors Avatar: The Last Airbender's "Zuko Alone", "The Tales of Ba Sing Se", "Appa's Lost Days" and "The Avatar and the Fire Lord" and Avatar: The Legend of Korra's "Beginnings" and "Korra Alone".

It would be a good opportunity to focus on Rayla's past with Kim'dael, Soren and Claudia's past with their mother Lissa, how Claudia met Terry like why they fall in love and what does Terry think of Claudia using dark magic, Aaravos' devouring of Janai's grandmother Queen Aditi, Callum's father Damian, Aanya and her mothers Annika and Neha, the Orphan Queen, Laurelion, Luna Tenebris, Garlath, Esmeralda Skall and so on as it could be an extra-long episode, say a 40-45 minute episode.

Return of characters

Other than characters who are likely going to return such as those who appeared last season like Callum, Rayla, Ezran, Soren, Claudia, Zym, Terry, Aaravos, Amaya, Janai, Zubeia, Gren, Kasi, Aanya, Lujanne, Allen, Runaan, Kosmo, Astrid, Bait, Stella, Karim and Miyana, here's those I'd like to see next season.

It's very likely that Runaan's husband Ethari will return because otherwise, we won't get a reunion between Rayla's foster fathers if he doesn't. Notable characters I'd like to see returning are Ellis, Ava, N'than, Ahling (considering that he's the only one of the three attacked by Viren's forces who is still alive along with that his son Kasef, who served as his temporary successor and was allies with Viren, is dead since Florian and Fareeda were killed off in season three and it would be a good opportunity for this to introduce their successors), Nyx, Akiyu, Kim'dael, Elmer, Villads and so on.

Especially Kim'dael since I'd like to see her appear in this season because it would be a good opportunity to set her as the main antagonist of the final arc along with introducing characters from Bloodmoon Huntress and Tales of Xadia such as Suroh as well as Lissa since I would like to see Soren and Claudia calling her out for her reasons to leave them to be with their father.

Deaths and resurrections

Given one of the recent interviews hinted that we'll be seeing a sacrifice, my guess is that we'll see something important. Given that Karim isn't so likeable, I think he'll likely bite the dust for his idiotic attempt to overthrow his sister Janai and there's a possibility that Callum will sacrifice his life and then returning back to life, given that he said in seasons four and six to Rayla that if Aaravos corrupts him to the dark side or if he gets consumed by darkness, (according to Kosmo), she would be the one doing the deed, something that she's not so sure about it.

I do think we'll see a resurrection but I doubt it'll be Viren since his voice actor Jason Simpson outright confirmed that he's permanently dead after being revived twice. I think Aaravos will manipulate Callum into reviving Viren after Claudia betrays him only to revive his daughter Leola, which could result in Callum and Rayla ultimately acting as parental figures to her in the end, not unlike how the Mandalorian became a father figure to Grogu in his titular show, how Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna became parental figures to Hotaru during Sailor Moon after her father's death and defeating Mistress 9 that led to her sacrificing herself to stop Phantom 90's wrath which resulted in her being age regressed into a baby or how Thor took care of Gorr's daughter Love in the end of Thor: Love and Thunder.

I also think Kpp'ar will be freed from his coin in which he pretends to have found redemption only for that he returned back with revenge on Viren before discovering that he's dead, resulting him attempting to kill Soren and Claudia before Rayla kills him and I think that's it.

Overall loved it! Much BETTER then Season 4 actually and love the animation in it too!

Like I love how the animation gets a bit fluid during fights and it looks awesome!

Just a few more random thoughts about Season 5 of The Dragon Prince...

The animation design team does a knock out job on just about everything except horses. I do love horses and I find the ones in TDP just don’t seem to look and move very much like horses, kind of like the animators find them boring and don’t put much elbow grease into it. I mean, look at the really cool dragon in this sample comparison to the stuffed animal horses.

At least two horses got munched by the monster wolves during this season and nobody seemed to feel all that sorry for them. If it had been dragons, well. 

Don’t get me wrong, I loooove dragons, too, and the scene where Zubeia envisioned speaking with Avizandum was done so well and really touching.

I applaud this show for all its gorgeous dragon designs, like this stunning sea dragon and sun dragon!

Moving on, after a few stumbles in Season 4, the characters and relationships are developing nicely, especially Callum and Rayla and how Callum is struggling with his guilt over using dark magic. Viren’s slow turnaround has been intriguing but he needs to pay the piper for all the wrong he’s done. All in all, everyone seems to remain consistent with their core personality for the most part as they grow during their adventures together, but the glaring exception to me remains Claudia.

Ever since Season 1, I’ve never quite understood how her character can act so dimwitted a majority of the time, yet she’s somehow able to remember and cast complex spells. I’m still scratching my head over how neither of Viren’s children inherited much of his brain power, although Soren has really come a long way and it was great how he helped Deadwood/Elmer. Meanwhile, Claudia still goes from oohing and awwing over some little critter, then has no problem crushing it to do dark magic. Overall, I continue to find her Jekyll and Hyde portrayal uneven and jarring.

At this point, Claudia’s behavior is 95% petty and cruel unless it involves Terry or her father, plus the kicker is that she wouldn’t even be getting very far in her quest (or have anything left of her humanity) without the help of Terry.  

Speaking of Terry, I genuinely have no clue why this kindly, good hearted elf person:

Is still finding excuses to hang out with this pretty much obvious psychopath:

I guess Terry hopes he can help Claudia do less awful things by showing her love and kindness? But he’s the one putting all the effort into their relationship it seems. Unless the writers have Claudia undergo a major change of heart and help Callum, Ezran, and Rayla end Arravos, I’m not sure how she can be believably redeemed.

I recently watched My Father’s Dragon on Netflix and AGH I WAS SO GOOD. WHAT AN ADORABLE AND BEAUTIFUL MOVIE. I was caught off-guard in the best way possible by the themes it touched on, and the animation, art style, and characters were all so unique and perfect!! Boris the dragon was definitely my favorite part though, so I drew the boyo himself!! My beloved, friend-shaped little doofus!!! He has my heart!!! I would love to be his friend!!

He’s holding a valentine card because I drew this on Valentine’s Day and thought it’d be cute to add a small nod to the holiday! So yeah, he gets a card, and he is clearly very very happy and grateful for it ^^ ❤️ The lil’ drawing on the card is made to look like a child drew him and Elmer from the movie!

Anyway, GO WATCH MY FATHER’S DRAGON IF YOU LIKE WHIMSICAL ANIMATED MOVIES/SHOWS. It got almost NO attention from the media, and it was even hard to find decent ref pics using the most basic searches on Google. It’s such a shame - this movie really deserves so much more than what it got. Seriously, it really is an adorable, beautifully-created tale! AND Gaten Matarazzo voiceacts Boris, which is the most perfect casting choice ever!!

I watched My Father’s Dragon:

the animation was amazing, I loved the style, it really captured a child’s worldview

Boris was so cute, loved his design

I liked Elmer, I thought he was very realistic for a kid his age

I loved the conflict between Dela and Elmer

Saiwa and Kwan were the highlight of the movie for me, they were such compelling and interesting characters. I want to climb around inside their heads. I want a spin-off movie of just them and their relationship. Give me Kwan coming back and trying to make amends post-canon

I don’t like how Elmer and Dela’s problems seemed to just go away in the epilogue, and how Ms. Crowley essentially had her personality replaced

this is a nitpick, but I don’t see the point of having the movie framed as someone telling their father’s story? Like I could accept it if maybe we got a shot or two at the end of Elmer’s kid telling the story to their kid or something… idk

I loved the worldbuilding. An island that sinks every hundred years as a rite of passage for dragons is such a cool concept, I loved it.

the rhino was so sweet. Loved her.

The ongoing theme of people just trying their best to cope with imminent disaster and the feeling that you aren’t enough was so poignant

9/10, would recommend

Judges' Remarks: This was a fun to watch (if sometimes hard to follow) retelling of the story. I appreciated the resourceful use of green screen, and there seemed to be good animal costumes although we barely got to see them; the camera cut away before we could really see the animals! The occasional intertitles were fun, although perhaps too many of them were simply "AHHHH!", and I wondered why almost every single camera shot cut off Elmer's head. However, the performances were energetic, and everyone seemed to be having a good time, and that vibe helped a lot. Overall a worthy attempt.
