William G. Allen (c. 1820 - May 1, 1888) educator who endured physical violence and escaped murder when he proposed marriage to the daughter of a white minister in upstate New York. Their relationship was the inspiration for a story about interracial love by author Louisa May Alcott, herself an abolition sympathizer.
Born in Virginia, the son of a free mulatto mother and a Welsh father, He was orphaned as a young boy and adopted by a free African American family. New York philanthropist Gerrit Smith sponsored his education at the Oneida Institute. He graduated and became editor of the National Watchman and he clerked for the Boston law firm of Ellis Gray Loring. He lectured on African American history and argued for a complete blending of the races.
He was a Greek Language and Belle Lettres professor at New York Central College making him the second African American on a college faculty. The appointment put him in the company of the Reverend Samuel J. May and the Reverend Lyndon King, a white abolitionist whose daughter Mary was a student at the college. He and Mary courted privately, and when he asked for her hand in marriage, Rev. King was supportive while Mary’s stepmother and brothers were not. Public opposition to the relationship grew more vocal, and Rev. King switched his alliances, banishing him from the minister’s house. He and Mary were to visit friends in Phillipsville, and an angry mob formed there “with tar, feathers, poles and an empty barrel spiked with shingle nails”. Mary was removed safely, but the crowd went after him, hitting him, tearing at his clothing, and yelling obscenities.
He escaped and the couple married. They exiled to England where he struggled to find work as a lecturer and writer, authoring The American Prejudice Against Color: An Authentic Narrative, Showing How Easily the Nation Got into An Uproar and A Personal Narrative. Financial hardship forced the couple and their seven children into a boardinghouse, relying on the charity of friends. They died in obscurity with no record of their final days. Louisa May Alcott immortalized their love story in her fictionalized account, “M.L”. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Combate 4: Agit Kabayel (18-0, 17 KO) - Arslanbek Makhmudov (22-0, 15 KO), pesados.

The Last House on the Street | Diane Chamberlain | Published 2022 | *SPOILERS*
When Kayla Carter's husband dies in an accident while building their dream house, she knows she has to stay strong for their four-year-old daughter. But the trophy home in Shadow Ridge Estates, a new development in sleepy Round Hill, North Carolina, will always hold tragic memories. But when she is confronted by an odd, older woman telling her not to move in, she almost agrees. It's clear this woman has some kind of connection to the area...and a connection to Kayla herself. Kayla's elderly new neighbor, Ellie Hockley, is more welcoming, but it's clear she, too, has secrets that stretch back almost fifty years. Is Ellie on a quest to right the wrongs of the past? And does the house at the end of the steet hold the key? Told in duel time periods, The Last House on the Street is a novel of shocking prejudice and violence, forbidden love, the search for justice, and the tangled vines of two families.
Kayla Carter is already leery of moving into her new construction built home in Round Hill, North Carolina when a mysterious woman shows up at her office at Bader & Gage, an architect firm, essentially scaring her even more. This woman, with bright red hair and a strange birthmark or scar on her wrist, knows a lot about Kayla, including the location of her new home, that she has a young daughter and that Jackson, Kayla's deceased husband, died while the house was in the process of being built. The woman even goes as far as to say she wanted to kill someone.
With this in her mind, Kayla begins to question, more so than before, if moving into the house is the best idea. But, with her father, former mayor Reed Miller, moving out of her childhood home into a condo, Kayla has no other choice. Moving in takes a lot of strength, as the house was the work of Kayla and Jackson together, designing everything within its walls themselves in the new neighborhood of Shadow Ridge Estates.
Kayla's POV is told alongside of Ellie, in 1965, during the time of the massive civil rights movement within the South. With the Voting Rights Act being promised to be signed by then president Lyndon Johnson, Ellie leaves everything she knows and loves behind to work for a program called SCOPE. Nobody can understand why she is doing it, including her best friend Brenda and her boyfriend, none other than Reed Miller, but Ellie feels that she doesn't need their approval to do the right thing.
Ellie begins working with SCOPE, canvassing predominantly black neighborhoods with fellow civil rights worker, Winston Madison. Ellie becomes taken with him, and vice versa, though they both know and understand that their feelings for one another cannot go further than friendship for fear of consequences. But, they let it go too far. After an incident in which Win is injured by her own brother, Rev. Greg Fillburn sends her home. Thinking she could get back into her families' good graces, she does everything she is told.
But Win writes to her requesting that the two of them see each other. On her instructions, Win meets her in the clearing found in the woods at the end of her street, where Kayla's house now sits in the 2010 storyline. In the clearing is a treehouse, and the two of them make love for the first time. When she is caught by her family, she promises to end things with him.
Win meets her again a few nights later as they had discussed, but their meeting is marred by the arrival of the KKK. Win is beaten, and dragged by a truck that Ellie sees now belongs to Reed and she is certain that he was involved, though his innocence shines through, even over the years. Ellie nevers finds Win's body, knowing that he has been murdered by the KKK and his remains never having been found.
In 2010, Ellie has returned to Round Hill after 45 years away in San Francisco, where she decided to reside after Win's demise. She has only returned as her mother and brother's health has declined severely, and she has hopes of repairing the friendship she once had with Brenda despite having a falling out.
Kayla strikes up a friendship with Ellie, though after learning that Reed is her father, she seems to be standoffish with her moreso. But when Kayla saves Buddy, Ellie's brother, from a potentially fatal fire, Ellie decides to put that behind her and basically becomes a confidant for Kayla.
Eventually, after many more mishaps with the house, and Rainie being kidnapped by the mysterious woman with red hair, Kayla is all but ready to put the house on the market until she learns that Ellie was in the treehouse in the clearning, where it has stood the test of time all of these years. She confesses to Kayla what happened back in 1965, and what led to her departure to head West.
Kayla confronts her father, who reassures her that he had nothing to do with it. But, when Reed and Kayla go to the house to speak with Buddy, after Win's remains are found in the woods behind Kayla's house while her fence is being installed, they learn the ugly truth.
Damn near everyone was a part of the KKK in the town back then, with the exception of Reed and Buddy. To Buddy, he was told that his father and his "Uncle" Byron, the county sheriff, had been at a poker game that night, which was also the night that Brenda's husband supposedly fell while working in the nursery, and after his death, Brenda lost their unborn child from grief.
But, in the end, Kayla realizes that the mysterious woman causing her so much grief the last few months was Brenda, and that Ellie's entire family, with the exception of Buddy, was involved in Win's murder. Her mother, Miss Pat, even confesses to being the one to drive the truck, Reed's truck, with Win tied to the bumper with a rope through the town since nobody else would do it.
And Brenda's husband didn't die in an accident; Ellie had actually kicked him off the ladder that he was trying to climb to get into the treehouse, causing his death and to Brenda, leaving her life in disarray ever since.
While Ellie is happy to finally have answers, she knows that it is time to leave Round Hill for good. Buddy's heart finally gave out, and after a celebration of life, has decided to have her childhood home demolished. She will return to San Francisco where she belongs, and has always felt she has belonged. She and Reed have renewed their friendship after 45 years of distance, and she is thankful to learn that he had nothing to do with Win's murder.
Kayla and Rainie's life also gets better. With Brenda long gone and no longer a threat to her or Rainie, the two of them begin to welcome families into the new neighborhood, finally meeting a single divorcee with a little girl the same age as Rainie. Life is going well for her.

‘DAY OF RECKONING’ ANNOUNCED FOR DECEMBER 23 AS RIYADH SEASON WELCOMES ANTHONY JOSHUA, DMITRY BIVOL, AND JAI OPETAIA FOR HISTORIC NIGHT OF BOXING
Anthony Joshua will headline a historic night of boxing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as he faces a ‘Day of Reckoning’ on Saturday, December 23 - along with world champions Dmitry Bivol and Jai Opetaia. His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA), announced today that Riyadh Season 2023 will play host to the ‘Day of Reckoning’, featuring some of the most famous boxing world champions and leading contenders from the top weight divisions at Kingdom Arena. An unprecedented line-up on a single night of boxing, the ‘Day of Reckoning’ will see two-time unified World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua go up against Otto Wallin as the pair close in on challenging for World Title honours, while former WBO World Champion Joseph Parker takes on the ‘Bronze Bomber’ and former WBC World Title holder, Deontay Wilder, with IBF No.1 contender Filip Hrgovic fighting Mark De Mori in another Heavyweight shootout. His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA), said: “The ‘Day of Reckoning’ fights constitute the highly anticipated event offered by Riyadh Season for boxing fans this year. It brings together a number of world boxing champions in groundbreaking bouts." Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn said: “We are delighted to be returning to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Riyadh Season and for what will ultimately be a historic event for our sport. I would like to thank His Excellency Turki Alalshikh for providing us with this fantastic opportunity. Anthony Joshua needs no introduction. He has his sights set firmly on becoming a three-time World Heavyweight Champion and I believe you will witness yet another memorable performance from AJ on December 23 when he faces Otto Wallin. Both Dmitry Bivol and Jai Opateia have chances to showcase their world class talents on a major stage and we look forward to exploring big fights in the Kingdom for both boxers with Queensberry, Goldstar and the NEC in the near future. Bivol will once more underline why he is one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters on the planet when he collides with Lyndon Arthur and reigning IBF Cruiserweight king Jai Opetaia will undoubtedly deliver an incredible, destructive display against Ellis Zorro. I cannot wait. It will be a special spectacle for fight fans all over the world and an extravaganza not to be missed." Two-time World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua said: "I said at the start of this year that my plan was to begin my journey of activity. Three fights in 12 months two victories and one pending. I am grateful to his Excellency Turki Alalshikh for the opportunity to fulfil my plan. I am fully focussed on December 23 and finishing the year in good fashion. It will be an incredible night of world class boxing.” WBA World Light-Heavyweight Dmitry Bivol said: “I have just recently come back from a great event in Saudi Arabia and now I will have the opportunity to fight there. I am excited and looking forward to fighting Lyndon, his record and his belt are a motivation for me.” IBF and Ring Magazine World Cruiserweight Champion Jai Opetaia said: “There’s a big part of me that’s so grateful to be part of this card but I’ve earned my spot here and on December 23 I will show why I’m the best Cruiserweight in the world and the king of the division. Now I’ve got to train hard and it doesn’t matter who is put in front of me, I have to beat them. I have a new mission, so let’s get it done. I’m ready. This is what I do.” The ‘Day of Reckoning’ comes after the ‘Battle of the Baddest’, which was held on October 28 during the opening of Riyadh Season 2023, in which Tyson Fury defeated Francis Ngannou. The fourth edition of Riyadh Season, themed "Big Time," offers many entertainment options and experiences. It continues to attract visitors from across the globe to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, during the winter months, providing them with the opportunity to partake in thousands of concerts, exhibitions, and other distinctive entertainment events. my favorite partner
With love to a lovely fandom, a continuation of my most popular Polin drabble on AO3, the color green, in honor of Polin Day. (Also related to no matchmaking.) You can also find this one on AO3. Happy Polin Day!
—
“Bridgerton has always thought himself such an easygoing fellow, but he does not much like being thwarted,” Lord Billington comments casually as he leads her to the floor.
“Does anyone, my lord?” Penelope asks rhetorically.
Lord Billington nods. “Touché, Miss Featherington.”
“Especially a man and I daresay our friend in particular is little used to it. Seeing as he is so often able to charm others into bending to his will.”
“But not me and, it seems, not you.”
Not any longer. “I have known him forever,” she says simply, echoing Colin’s earlier words.
“And familiarity breeds contempt?” Lord Billington queries with a grin.
“I wouldn’t call it contempt,” Penelope chides, but she knows her answering smile is cheeky. “Merely an ability to resist his charms.”
Lord Billington laughs loudly. “That probably annoys him more than actual contempt.”
She giggles. “You do know him very well indeed.”
“I vow I can feel his eyes boring into my back even now,” Lord Billington informs her with a smirk that she's quite sure she mirrors.
They have a lovely waltz, for Lord Billington is a fine dancer and excellent company, so much so that she thinks it a pity it is unlikely to be repeated. Not only because Lord Macclesfield had to nudge him in the first place, but also because, unlike his fellow Determined Bachelors, Lord Billington has no mama or aunt to pressure him to attend society events at least occasionally. It is likely only his friendship with Colin that has him making an appearance at a Bridgerton ball and Colin seems so very cross with him that she is not sure he’ll be able to count on another invitation any time soon.
—
Much to Penelope’s surprise, on the rare occasions Lord Billington does make an appearance in a London ballroom, he always saves a dance for her, even after he is married.
His wife Ellie is a lovely woman and doesn’t mind a bit both because she befriends Penelope immediately (we redheads must stick together) and because she knows her husband would not be himself if he did not take every opportunity to tease and torment one of his old friends.
And it certainly torments Colin whenever the now-formerly very rakish earl escorts her to the floor.
It seems Colin really does not like being thwarted.
—
Even after she is married, Lord Billington makes a point of asking Penelope to dance with him at the first ball she attends after her secret is revealed. “For old times' sake, Lady Whistledown?” he says with a wink as the strains of the waltz begin.
The invitation had had their proper address crossed out, with Lady and Lord Whistledown written in a distinctly masculine hand just above. At the time, her husband had been amused.
She expects he is less amused now.
“If you try to claim my wife’s waltz, I will bludgeon you right here in your own ballroom.”
Right in one. She knows him so well.
“If you really must murder me, do try to do it cleanly. My wife should hate the unnecessary expense of having my blood scrubbed off the floor.”
Lady Billington is unable to stifle a snicker, but quickly composes herself to nod solemnly.
“Taking ‘lovesick newlywed’ a bit far, though, eh?” Lord Billington can't resist ribbing him further. “I expected it what with how sickeningly sweet you were at your wedding, but I thought you would’ve mellowed some after all that romantic drivel at the Hastings ball. What a spectacle you made of yourself, old boy.”
“It was lovely and very grand,” the usually quite sensible Lady Billington says approvingly, elbowing her husband disapprovingly. “A fitting swan song for the cleverest lady in London.”
“Oh, I don’t know about cleverest. Second cleverest, I’d say, unless we are out of town,” says Lord Billington affectionately.
“Speaking of lovesick,” Colin mutters in the other couple’s direction before taking her hand. “I do believe this is my dance.”
“I suppose it must be, if only to prevent a homicide.”
“Only for that reason?” he asks airily.
“I should not like to be widowed so soon after our marriage because you were hanged for murdering a peer of the realm. And I’d hate to lose my favorite partner, you know,” Penelope replies as they take their positions.
“You do mean me, don’t you?”
“Who else, my love?” she teases. Her eyes widen when he doesn’t answer right away. “Colin Bridgerton! You didn’t really think –”
“I didn’t like not being your first choice,” he confesses with all the bashfulness of a schoolboy as he leads her gracefully through the steps of the dance.
She can’t help smiling. Goodness, but he’s absurd. He nearly married another woman her first season and subsequently became quite the rake, likely consorting with more ladies than she cares to consider, but he’s been harboring a secret insecurity over being refused in favor of his friend for a dance. “You ridiculous man,” she scolds affectionately. “I suppose it’s a good thing that I wasn’t often in the position of choosing between eligible gentlemen.”
“But you should’ve been,” he says quietly.
“It was for the best,” she says soothingly. “Otherwise, who knows who might’ve swept me off my feet whilst you wandered?”
“Had I been a bit cleverer, perhaps I wouldn’t have wandered so long or so far before coming home to you.”
Though he’s smiling, he still looks a touch too serious for her taste, so she bites back the quip or into so many other ladies’ arms. “Truly, it gave me time to grow up and become my own woman. Otherwise . . . well, I adored you so that I don’t know that I would’ve bothered to learn who I was apart from you if you’d loved me from the start. Nor would you have had time and space to grow into the man you were meant to be.”
He sighs in that way she knows means he wishes they were not in public so he could kiss her. (Not that that’s always stopped him.) “How is it you always know precisely what to say to me?”
“I know you.”
“That you do, my darling,” he says softly, looking down at her with that look - her look, the one she’s been seeing for a very long time, though it’s only recently she’s come to realize what it meant, to understand that he’d begun to fall long before he knew it himself.

Impresiona el físico del primero, el ruso Makhmudov, que va dejando 'cadáveres' a su paso. so i went out for dinner tonight and my server’s name was Lynden:
which is a name i’ve never heard before and i thought it was pretty
but also it immediately made me think of RWRB and how their first kiss was under the linden tree
so then i thought, what if when Alex and Henry have kids, they have a girl and name her Lynden because of that?!
because they’d want a unique name
a) just because they think it’s cooler than a common name but also
b) bc Henry never thought he’d get a choice for shit like that before Alex came around (of course he also thought he’d have to have them with a woman, but that’s a whole other subject way too sad for this post), and
c) to spite Henry’s grandmother if she’s still around by then, and Phillip, who think Henry’s children should have more traditional names (we know Alex loves being contrary, and i think Henry would agree in this case lol)
((EDIT because i just realized this totally randomly last night: it also sounds like “London” so that’s a nice small tribute to Henry’s home
and the only other time i’ve heard a version of this name is the male “Lyndon” of the president LBJ, and I have no idea if he was a good president but it is presidential/political which we know is kind of Alex’s thing, but more importantly, the lakehouse Alex loves is on Lake LBJ, so that would add a lot of meaning for him too))
and like a lot of people, i always hc’d they’d have kids, but didn’t have my heart set on specific names other than Arthur if they have a boy, after Henry’s dad
(and maybe calling him a shortened version of it, like Artie, because it’s cute but also to still differentiate a little even though Henry’s dad’s not around for them to have name mix-ups [lol but also it’s getting sad again sorry])
((EDIT because i just realized this totally randomly last night: i’ve also now heard the idea from someone of doing “Elena” because it’s after Alex’s mom but a more Hispanic version and i really like that, and they could call her something for short to match Artie and to help differentiate… but Ellie would be to close to Ellen, and i don’t think i really like Laney… but anyway, at first i was thinking Lynden could be a middle name, but also i realized Catherine and Catalina are similar, so if they could figure out some combo/middle ground for that, that could be a middle name to name after June even though she goes by June lol and Henry’s mom. so maybe they just need more than one daughter lol. and then maybe with the first names, they wouldn’t need all the last names? because i’d figured Alex would want to keep both of his but the only one that matters to Henry is Fox, so they would both change theirs to/have their kids be Claremont-Diaz-Fox? but that’s still such a mouthful lol))
but now i really like this one!
(it’s not too “stupid modern baby names made up by suburban moms,” is it? [tried to link a post there, but it didn’t work in the original post or in replies or in a reblog, so I’m gonna put a screenshot of the link here so maybe you can c&p if you’re on mobile and have the newer feature of being able to c&p text from screenshots, which is like my favorite thing ever lol, or type from scratch:])
