The Art Of Redemption - Timeline
Okay, so this isn't a timeline strictly for The Art of Redemption. It's more like a timeline for characters that appear in that story as well as in We Are Sugar Valentine, since the two are more than tangentially connected.
We Are Sugar Valentine is taking place in present day (2022-2024) and The Art of Redemption takes place in 2011-2012.
I noticed that several people may have been confused because I tend to jump around a lot between stories and also with random vignettes. It's all perfectly clear in my head, but since nobody else is living in my head, I thought a timeline of important events for all the major characters would help everyone make sense of it.
Anyway, for anyone who's interested, you can find the timeline under the cut:
1950

☃️ plotting / starter call for the (now-annual) winter market! ☃️
i mostly adjusted from last year, plus added my new characters! please LIKE this if you want to plot and i’ll shoot you a message (probably on discord) sometime this week; or you can REPLY if you just want to claim a starter with/without plotting.
no starter cap, but there is a date cut-off, which is december *21. i’m not accepting new starter requests after that~
wei wuxian -- starters for: atlas kipling (hiddenangcls), marlene mckinnon (mcrcki), jester lavorre (circleofstarrs), vic weasley (drvcxrys), wen ning (coreofgold), benedict bridgerton (recklcssabandon), ???
last year, he was heavily involved in the snowball fight! he had a good time, but he doesn’t quite have that level of energy in him this year, so he’s probably going to be a little more chill-- but he’ll pitch in to help your character’s team in the snowball fight or snowman building competition if they need a hand. he’ll also be freezing his ass off in the ice bar.
yuri plisetsky -- starters for: caitlyn kiramman (masqce), aj campos (wvsteria), five hargreeves (lcnelyhearted), victor nikiforov (irresistiibles), xiao lanhua (tragcdysewn), addison montgomery (hxartbreaker), doom (youllalwaysbemyporcelain), elizabeth swann (irongcld), lizzie midford (drvcxrys), albus severus potter (recklcssabandon), lan jingyi (coreofgold), ???
yuri was talked into offering FREE ice skating lessons at the ice rink. as a professional ice skater, he will help teach your characters how to successfully navigate the ice; however, he will not be very patient about it, so keep that in mind.
orpheus -- starters for: blue (hiddenangcls), rosemary winters (mcrcki), seth gecko (hxartbreaker), jade west (strwbrrymccn), luke patterson (irongcld), annabeth chase (drvcxyrs), ???
orpheus is running a winter karaoke tent! as long as the song is festive or holiday-ish or winter-ish in nature, the lyrics will be loaded up on the karaoke machine. open for soloists, duets, small groups, whatever! if your character wants to show off their vocal skills, or just enjoy the festive music, drop by. if orpheus catches your character making fun of the singers, though, he’ll be sad and disappointed.
wen kexing -- starters for: steve rogers (svnlvght), zhou zishu (youllalwaysbemyporcelain), emily fields (wvsteria), zhang chengling (coreofgold), ???
last year he mostly spent time painting ornaments and heckling hot santa, and will most likely be indulging in much of the same this year. he will probably also enjoy a carriage ride or two, and would gladly share the carriage with your character.
xie lian -- starters for: josh washington (purelybilateral), shi qingxuan (irresistiibles), tylor tuskman (youllalwaysbemyporcelain), jinx (strwbrrymccn), hua cheng (coreofgold), ???
he may not celebrate these holidays but he really enjoys the warm atmosphere of people coming together to celebrate festivities like this. he’ll be bundled up by the bonfires or oo-ing and aa-ing over the creativity of the snowmen others have built. he might try building a gingerbread house, and after some bartering, he’ll probably be wrapped in a collection of 2-5 handmade scarves from the crafts stalls by the end of the week. **he will also be getting tipsy for the first time in his life, accidentally, due to poorly labelled mulled wine
blathers -- starters for: missandei (wvsteria), jack kline (lcnelyhearted), zhongli (irresistiibles), jeon seol (youllalwaysbemyporcelain), qui-gon jinn (hxartbreaker), xiao xingchen (coreofgold), ???
once again, he will be getting as involved as possible, and with an enthusiastic attitude. if given the opportunity, he will talk to you about anything and everything he has recently witnessed at the market, and i imagine he’ll be spending a lot of time at the hot chocolate and sweets stalls.
he xuan -- starters for: gu chan-seong (strwbrrymccn), stiles stillinski (recklcssabandon), ???
if you see a man dressed in all black seemingly consuming every edible item offered at the market within a one-mile radius, that’s he xuan.
sha hualing -- starters for childe (masqce), nymeria (hiddenangcls), james sirius (svnlvght), diana meade (lcnelyhearted), luo binghe (coreofgold), ???
she wants to try everything, the ice skating, the snowboarding, whatever. she wants to crush the competition at the snowball fight. she will run your character’s sled over with her own, or possibly toss it in the street. she’ll be the fastest person in the polar plunge, even though that is not necessarily a competitive situation lol. she will (unfortunately) be documenting it all on tiktok, and she will also be hanging out around the ice bar.
and then i have a small collection of characters who will NOT enjoy the market, either because they have zero percent festive cheer (most of them don’t celebrate christmas or the january 1 new year anyway) or because they are too stressed to properly enjoy a market like this, or some combination of the two: loid forger, liu qingge, dongfang qingcang, & chu wanning! but they’re still open for starters if you’re interested lol.  -- starters for: yor forger & loid forger (tragcdysewn), ???

The bulk of this episode follows Vincenzo who is effectively pimped out for the second time (the first time was in the last episode, to get the disgruntled wife's to testify against her husband) to bring Babel down. This time, Cha-Young is the one who hatches the plot to seduce and bring down the young president of Shinkwang Bank, Hwang Min-Seong (played by Kim Sung-Cheol). Not only is Shinkwang Bank helping Babel get back on its feet, Min-Seong's father was the man who sexually harassed Vincenzo's mother. We find out in the course of this episode that Min-Seong's mother let Vincenzo's mother be framed for killing her husband even though she was witness to the fact that Vincenzo's mother was innocent. All so that old man Hwang and the family's reputation isn't tarnished.
Min-Seong has his own dirty secrets. He is violent and abusive with his partners, who dare not file complaints because they're afraid of being outed. As Vincenzo observes:
Tumblr media
There's very little of the writing in Vincenzo that has stood out for me so far, but I like the way this episode brought together themes like violence against women, abuse, homophobia, sexism and exploitation. The script makes sure that Min-Seong's depraved and perverted behaviour isn't shown in a way that implies all gay romances are dysfunctional. Instead, what it suggests is that patterns of violence are learnt and those who have socio-cultural capital will be able to brutalise those who don't. The script reminds the audience that homophobic attitudes make it impossible for Min-Seong's victims to get justice. It also makes it possible for men like Min-Seong to continue being abusive just as sexism makes it possible for abusers like his father to go unpunished.
I also liked how the scenes of romance are played for humour, but not the sort that mocks homoerotica. The flirting is shown with all the smoothness and tropes that you expect from any romantic scene in a K-drama, right down to the back hug.
Tumblr media
If it wasn't for the script letting us know early on that Min-Seong is a serial abuser, you wouldn't think there's anything wrong with this little romance. Which is another important point that the drama subtly makes — abusers don't declare their violent intentions. Rather they groom their victims and emotional blackmail is often a preferred weapon. There's a scene later on when Min-Seong is seen standing in the rain, looking pitiful. Through both Vincenzo and Cha-Young, the script reminds us that even though he's seeming harmless right now, Min-Seong is an abusive man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dark subtext of this sub-plot is balanced by the cuteness of Vincenzo's reaction to having to seduce a man and the sheer enthusiasm of Cha-Young and Mr. Nam, who seem to be the two angels on this devil's shoulder. There's something particularly glorious about the idea of Vincenzo, raised in Italy (the fabled land of romance and romantic heroes) being given seduction tips by Cha-Young and Mr. Nam. Vincenzo not being the one calling the shots also saves this sub-plot from becoming a straight man acting out his gay fantasies and then punishing his gay partner. Instead, in a convoluted way, with Vincenzo following Cha-Young’s lead and properly committing to the con when he realises how the Hwang family framed his mother, this episode becomes more about being an ally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Words cannot express just how tickled I was to see the arrival of Min-Seong's mother (the grand matriarch of the Hwang family who didn't hesitate to crush a working-class woman's life in order to assume her position of power), heralded by these two:
Tumblr media
Mama Hwang is also dressed to resemble Elizabeth II and is tremendously snooty, calling Choi Myung-Hee a "lowly wench" at one point. She's also the one thanks to whom we have this screenshot.
Tumblr media
I also liked the contrast between Min-Seong being defended by his mother and Cha-Young seizing the moment and defending her father's reputation by issuing the challenge to Babel and Wusang. No wonder Vincenzo is looking at her with such admiration and pride as they make their grand exit.

Vincenzo. 빈센조. 7.9/10
I would recommend this drama to my friends. I would rewatch this drama.
Yeon Bin is v pretty. Taecyeon is still hot. Han Seo was kinda cute as well. Mi ri was pretty. Gi Seok was cute at times. Min Seong was also kinda cute sometimes.
Jeon Yeon Bin is doing great acting with Cha Young's character. And everyone else actually. Cha Young has a very unique personality and it's possible that she wouldn't be as likable if she weren't this pretty and that sucks. I love how idiosyncratic she is with both humor, sass, and bossness.
Every time Vincenzo drops his lighter, I'm like how many do you have?
Jo Han Chul has such a different vibe here and in Hometown Cha Cha Cha. Yet, also the same.
I'm here for the Min Seong and Vincenzo's meet-cute. This was such a tragic love story one-sidedly.
This show is the right amount of serious and ridiculous. We are hating corruption and the man while wanting to beat the system. We also have a daily slice of life fun with good-hearted people with idiosyncratic vibes.
We love Alkong and Dalkong.
Gi Seok acts so cute. His facial expressions appeal to me.
lol at the 2pm references and cameos. LOLL when Cha Young was like why is everyone in this plaza so talented?? True. I enjoy the Mi Ri hair bits. Lmao, that fighting scene between the hospital husband and wife in the courtroom would never happen irl. Lmao at the Elizabeth Holmes reference. Mr. Nam riding the bike backward to block the entrance is so amusing. Lmao at the 3 questions Yeong Un asked the monks to distract them.
The monks blocking the entrance after Mi ri runs for help is so baller and supportive. Vincenzo's mom is so sweet and respectful. I loved all scenes with her in it. I definitely cried. I love how supportive everyone is of Vincenzo. I also like the side crushes on him. I really like how unique all of the Geumga Plaza family are. I also loved their backstories being revealed. They really are such great additions to the drama, unexpectedly. I enjoyed the tailor who supported Vincenzo when he was trying on suits.
I cried so much by the end of this. Fuck at Han Seo's death. I can't believe the actor for him is the same age as me because he seems older.
It's interesting to see Han Seok fear death at times. He also didn't want torture. What's his desire to live? What is Myung Hee's driving force? Why is she so hell-bent on ruining the lives of others? What does she really gain?

The United Nations has made a statement regarding the protests against racial inequality in the United States. It reads:
"The recent killing of George Floyd has shocked many in the world, but it is the lived reality of black people across the United States. The uprising nationally is a protest against systemic racism that produces state-sponsored racial violence, and licenses impunity for this violence. The uprising also reflects public frustration and protest against the many other glaring manifestations of systemic racism that have been impossible to ignore in the past months, including the racially disparate death rate and socioeconomic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the disparate and discriminatory enforcement of pandemic-related restrictions. This systemic racism is gendered. The protests the world is witnessing, are a rejection of the fundamental racial inequality and discrimination that characterize life in the United States for black people, and other people of color.
The response of the President of the United States to the protests at different junctures has included threatening more state violence using language directly associated with racial segregationists from the nation’s past, who worked hard to deny black people fundamental human rights. We are deeply concerned that the nation is on the brink of a militarized response that reenacts the injustices that have driven people to the streets to protest.
Expressions of solidarity—nationally and internationally—are important but they are not enough. Many in the United States and abroad are finally acknowledging that the problem is not a few bad apples, but instead the problem is the very way that economic, political and social life are structured in a country that prides itself in liberal democracy, and with the largest economy in the world. The true demonstration of whether Black lives do indeed matter remains to be seen in the steps that public authorities and private citizens take in response to the concrete demands that protestors are making. One example is nationwide calls to rollback staggering police and military budgets, and for reinvestment of those funds in healthcare, education, housing, pollution prevention and other social structures, especially in communities of color that have been impoverished and terrorized by discriminatory state intervention.
Reparative intervention for historical and contemporary racial injustice is urgent, and required by international human rights law. This is a time for action and not just talk, especially from those who need not fear for their lives or their livelihoods because of their race, colour, or ethnicity. Globally, people of African descent and others have had to live the truths of systemic racism, and the associated pain, often without meaningful recourse as they navigate their daily lives. International leaders that have spoken out in solidarity with protestors, and with black people in the United States should also take this opportunity to address structural forms of racial and ethnic injustice in their own nations, and within the international system itself.
