May I just say... Colin Morgan's background stage business is impeccable. There are so many actors who just stand there watching or aimlessly shuffle around, but I've noticed that when Colin Morgan is in-character, he is in-character.

I haven't watched him in anything other than Merlin, but when he's not the focus of the camera, he's still doing things just as Merlin does. Like, trying not to laugh during the feast when Elena was visiting and displaying poor table manners, actually looking deep in-thought and mouthing the name 'Alice' when Gaius was talking to him about her, glaring at Gwen from the bedpost when she was enchanted and was monologuing about who could have possibly poisoned Arthur, polishing or doing a chore or keeping his head down when Uther's talking to Arthur but still watching them with a keen eye-

and so many more instances! His background stage business is just amazing.

i prefer happy ending bbc merlin where morgana becomes court sorceress and arthur becomes king and merlin remains as his servant (until they eventually marry) and lancelot lives and he and gwen marry but that damn game of thrones (?? probably idk) audio on tiktok that goes “i mean to fight this war and win it.” “good. to war then.” keeps giving me visions of king arthur of camelot on the verge of war with other kingdoms and his powerful court sorcerer merlin standing by his throne. arthur declares that he wishes to go to war and merlin (eager to bring about the united albion the prophecies speak of) supports arthur immediately and declares they’re going to war

Merlin rewatch -- S3E6: The Changeling

Elena really was quite cute and sweet. And Arthur actually had a good moment with her too before he was put off (again) by her inelegance...

Arthur was rather delighted by their horse racing, and when she hit him at the arm, his smile didn't waver. The dead mother talk was nice too! It's not often Arthur offers some of his sentimental self. He wondered if he was anything like his mother 🥹.

Arthur cackled (!) when Elena awkwardly trying to make it less insulting that she'd laughed and said that Arthur wasn't all like his father. I wonder if Arthur thought of Gwen here. He definitely found her awkwardness cute xd

Unfortunately after romantically presenting the rose, Arthur was like...

Bradley’s face was very funny, and I get that it doesn't feel good to be sneezed at on your chest, but it kind of made me think that Arthur's resistant of marrying her was solely about her lack of elegance…

I do really like the reason Elena didn't want to marry Arthur.

"He doesn't understand me." I think it's spot on. Arthur couldn't see through her clumsy appearance. And he didn't try very hard anyway, since he loved someone else.

And Elena knew what it was to be understood and loved. She had Lord Godwyn and Grunhilda.

I like she and Lord Godwyn's father and daughter relationship. Don't know how Uther befriended possibly the kindest lord in albion. I think Lord Godwyn is very indulgent of Elena. He didn’t point out that Elena didn’t wear shoes here, just said they would be late and asked her to take the carriage.

"Beautiful"

I'm sure even if Elena hadn't transformed to a 'perfect princess', Lord Godwyn's answer wouldn't have changed.

Grunhilda was a bit difficult since her pixie reveal made one questions her genuineness. But I'd like to think she cared for Elena on a personal level.

--- much like Lord Godwyn. They saw the beauty of Elena hidden under the clumsiness and inelegance. That's something nice in this episode that makes fun of her 'odd behaviour' relentlessly...

Bonus:

This shot is so funny to me. Arthur was being obnoxious but in a fun way at least. So curious of his expression there. Elena waving that flower was cute.

Something that's always bothered me is titles and how they are used in Merlin. Why the fuck is Elena referred to as Princess Elena but her father is only ever referred to as Lord Godwyn?! Why is he not King Godwyn? And why is the reverse true for King Olaf and his daughter Lady Vivian?

To alleviate this annoyance I've come up with a theory that I feel explains this inconsistency.

For the ladies, it might have to do with succession. We know Elena is Godwyn's only child so maybe since she's his heir she's styled princess and Vivian might have a brother that's just not mentioned who's the heir. If Vivian's not next in line for the throne maybe that's why she's Lady Vivian instead of princess. Mithian being styled princess and the only child of King Rodor (If Mithian had any siblings I'm pretty sure we'd see them at some point during their kingdom being couped) also supports this idea.

This doesn't explain Godwyn being a Lord but I have an idea for that. He's not a king, he's a regent. I think Elena's mother was the one born into the royal family and was the Queen Regnant with Godwyn as her husband and Lord Consort. After she died he took over as regent until Elena is ready to take the throne, thus making him the ruler of his kingdom but not a king.

I don't know if this theory will hold up to scrutiny from someone with a better understanding of royal titles than me but it's the one I'm choosing to apply to any future ideas involving these characters.

princess elena was actually one of my favorite merlin characters. despite being manipulated for 20 years by her nursemaid, mocked by everyone in camelot and not feeling like she was good enough her entire life, she got the happy ending she deserved!!

makes me so mad how everyone mocked her and then as soon as she acted “normal” everyone was just like “oh my god, she’s BEAUTIFUL!!”

elena deserved to fall in love, take part in horse races and not wear heels for the rest of her life!! my messy haired queen, i adore her so much!!

So a while back, I got an idea, or there was a prompt, or *something* where I was like, "I'm gonna write a fic where Mithian and Elena and Arthur all kind of grow up together, you know, while their king dads are hanging out doing King Things" and I thought it was going to be this cute friendship ™ thing and now it's, like, they're going to help him figure himself and Merlin out and maybe accept magic and look, folx, I don't even know what I'm doing anymore, here have a snippet.

He walked over to them and nodded his head. “Princess Elena, Princess Mithian.” 

They hurried to stifle their giggles and turned. Mithian gave a polite little curtsey, while Elena reached out to slap his arm before apparently remembering herself and turning it into an awkward shimmy. 

Arthur couldn’t fight a grin this time. “Erm, I thought perhaps you might like to see the gardens? It’s a lovely day …” He trailed off when both of their faces fell slightly. “Or, ah. We could visit the shops in the Lower Town?” What the hell do girls like to do? He was going to murder Morgana for leaving him high and dry like this.

Mithian lowered her eyes. “Camelot is quite beautiful. I had rather hoped we might go for a ride in the countryside.”

“I love riding!” Elena crowed. “Just about the only thing I do gracefully,” she added with a roll of her eyes, bumping Mithian with her shoulder.

A wave of relief washed over Arthur. “Fabulous!” he exclaimed, eyes brightening, and added proudly. “You can meet Hengroen. He was a gift for the anniversary of my birth. Just a yearling now, but he’s going to be my destrier when he’s grown and I’m a knight.” 

“Oh, can I ride him?” Eyes wide, Elena clasped her hands together.

“Petal,” Grunhilda admonished, but Elena just waved dismissively.

“You know Father won’t mind me going riding with the prince,” she said, pursing her lips. “You said you had things to do anyway.” Sighing, the older woman nodded and hurried off.

Both girls’ eyes shone with excitement. “Roddy will be so envious,” Mithian said brightly, waving at her brother over her shoulder as he attempted to hide a yawn. “He’d much rather be out with us than listening to the old men talking about treaties and borders.”

Gesturing for them to follow, Arthur led the way out of the council chambers. “At least he gets to compete in the tournament,” he said, hands in the pockets of his breeches. “Wish I could.”

“One day you will,” Elena replied. “And we’ll have to be all boring and wear fancy gowns and sit in the stands.”

Shaking her head so that her dark hair swung over shoulders, Mithian announced, “Not I. I’ll schedule a hunt for myself instead.”

“You hunt?” Arthur asked, incredulous. “Morgana rides, but I can’t envision her with a crossbow to save my life.”

“Arthur, I love hunting,” Mithian said with a smile. 

Elena shrugged. “I’m a terrible shot, but give me a horse and I can rival the wind. Father says my mother was an excellent horsewoman. Suppose I get it from her.”

They chattered eagerly all the way to the stables, and Arthur thought for the first time that perhaps this week might not be all bad.
