i feel i have been unusually active on tumblr today but. recently i compiled stats for the eleceed relationship tags on ao3, and i thought y'all might like to see it.

cool stats: jiwoo, unsurprisingly, has the largest number of relationships, with kayden is in a distant second. his most popular platonic ship is ofc kayden&jiwoo (which makes up almost 1/5th of all eleceed fics), while his most popular romantic ship is sucheon/jiwoo (which i get, but am a little surprised at). kayden/kartein, or kaykar as i occasionally shorten them to, has the most fics as a romantic pairing. the most popular romantic ship w/o either of them is subin/jisuk, and the same goes for the platonic subin&jisuk. kartein's ao3 tag is "Kartein | Curtin", which is my fault and therefore so embarassing that i've sent a message to ao3 support to get it fixed (among others😭)

Hi Eleceed Tumblr fans! I am here from Ao3 lmao. I haven't used Tumblr in years so excuse my noob ass. I plan to reblog some of the Ao3 ideas I had into here

First up is my KarKay Pre-Canon Speculation. Enjoy~

Ao3 version of Pre-Canon

— One:

Kayden immediately knows how to provoke Kartein using taunts (138). Even though Kartein is well-known by Awakeners as a healer, they definitely have a history if Kayden knows how to provoke him so well on a personal level. It's very clear that Kayden is not simply guessing about how to provoke Kartein (the jabs are too on-point and Kayden knows to immediately use this method), which implies that they have either bantered before, or Kayden watched someone else banter with Kartein. Frankly I think the former is more likely; in what scenario would Kayden simply be watching Kartein banter?

— Two:

Kayden somehow had Kartein's highly personal number that barely anyone has access to (136). This implies that they had a deeper relationship than simply passing by each other in the past. I assume they were not really friends, but close enough to warrant contact information if necessary. I am very unsure what would constitute as ‘necessary’ though, especially considering the fact that Kayden had Kartein's phone, but not Top Ten Astra who had to send several minions after Kartein to even try to meet him (since I assume Astra would have simply called Kartein to meet if his phone was known) (263). Therefore, Kartein did not give Top Tens or other high rankers access to him by default, and is more highly selective for who gets his personal phone number.

In other words, Kartein gave Kayden his phone for a much more specific reason than Kayden being powerful, even though they said they just ‘knew each other’. Honestly, knowing their personalities, I would believe it if they had each other's numbers solely as a joke or for some funny petty reason like a well-placed provocation, a dare, or literally getting drunk and being impulsive

— Three:

Kayden immediately trusts that Kartein can heal a broken core simply because ‘he said he could’ (140). Sure Kartein is the best known healer, but really there would be no reason to simply ‘trust his word’ for an ‘impossible feat’ without having clear previous evidence of his abilities. Also the way Kayden said it implied more than just Kayden knowing Kartein's reputation; the way he said it seemed like he personally could trust Kartein's word (regarding healing) somehow? Maybe Kayden had seen Kartein heal some crazy injuries in the past, or has more reason to trust Kartein's word. I doubt that Kartein has healed Kayden before the fight with Astra, but perhaps there was a moment in history that proved his prowess in Kayden's eyes

— Four:

Kartein trusts Kayden to protect him while healing Jiwoo without even asking (140). Perhaps this is due to Kartein's reputation and people wanting to make sure he is around for heals (and therefore shouldn't be randomly offed), but Kayden is also known to be a fighter. So it feels like something else going on for Kartein to just accept that Kayden would fight to protect him? Although that ‘something’ could be the fact that Kayden clearly cares for his apprentice, and Kartein at least trusts that Kayden would protect Jiwoo and therefore himself if he wanted Jiwoo to be cured. That feels like the most likely answer to me

— Five:

Kartein doesn't plant an anti-heal in Jiwoo in case the deal falls through with Kayden (unlike with Astra, 274). This implies that Kartein either likes Jiwoo enough by their few interactions to not do that, or trusts Kayden’s word to give him the cat ability. I see some potential for both answers being true, since Kartein seemed affected by Jiwoo's insistence to not be healed due to his mentor’s sacrifice. I could see Kartein valuing someone like that even from one interaction, since it's canon that Kartein gets ridiculously expensive offers for his healing. So rejecting his service for another person's sake could be something he respects outright. At the same time, I could also see there being history where Kartein sees that Kayden kept his word to someone else and could be trusted to not deceive him

— Six:

Kayden knows how to provoke Kartein but didn't quite trust that Kartein would heal Jiwoo if the cat ability was not considered significant (140). Kayden clearly propped up the cat ability a bit in order to make it seem like he hesitated to give up the secret. He stated that he didn't know if Kartein would back out if the ability wasn't valued. I feel like this just reinforces the point that he and Kartein clearly knew each other (both in the fact that Kayden knew to ensure that the ability was valuable, but also knowing that Kartein could be fickle even if he already technically made a deal). However, this also shows that Kayden did not necessarily trust in Kartein's personality to not back out for a small reason

— Seven:

Kayden knows that Kartein's combat abilities are less known (267). It feels like he knows this from either personal experience, either witnessing Kartein's combat himself or fighting him. I don't think they actually fought before though, so personally I would say the former. However, some other top Awakeners are clearly aware of Kartein's power too, since Kartein said that this is why Astra would send three people to capture him rather than one. Supri and Muse (262) clearly discuss the fact that Kartein's combat ability is less known. So perhaps Kayden knowing is less a personal thing and more a ‘Kayden is a top Awakener who is in the loop’ thing

— Eight:

Kayden seems immediately fine with showing Kartein Jiwoo's house (138). This definitely implies something about their history. Not only is Kayden willing to expose his apprentice to Kartein (which is information that people cough Dusik cough would literally be willing to sell to attack Kayden, 98), but also Jiwoo's own personal home that is barely even guarded. If Kayden didn't trust Kartein to a decent degree, then this really could not have happened and Kayden would have simply bought Kartein a hotel or maybe asked a favour of Shinhwa to house him

— Nine:

The fact that Kayden knows he can banter with Kartein at all. No one else really tries to banter with Kartein, but Kayden does so upon meeting up with him in Korea. They immediately seem pretty comfortable talking with each other despite claiming they only ‘know each other’. And despite the fact they seem to be known as antagonistic to each other (262). Their pre-canon relationship seems SO oddly close but also distant, I'm in pain

— Ten, reply to Fabi04:

“You're nowhere near Kartein's level [of beauty] anyways” (182). This statement is from a pre-canon flashback, so it's safe to say this is Kayden's opinion from way before he and Kartein become more amicable. For guys who supposedly have a disagreement, this statement feels simultaneously like the jab it's supposed to be towards Vatore, but also a compliment to Kartein. The quote is not only an explicit mention that Kayden notices how damn gorgeous Kartein is, but also shows that Kayden will (at least subconsciously) compare other people with Kartein in terms of attractiveness.

Slightly stepping back, Kayden definitely is just trying to jab at Vatore here, so saying something that would pick at Vatore is the priority of the words. Even so, Kartein came to mind first to use against Vatore— he's not an afterthought in Kayden's jab, Kayden outright doesn't mind putting Kartein above Vatore. I suppose this does not necessarily imply a lot about their pre-canon relationship other than that Kayden has seen Kartein either in-person or in a photo/video. It's just that attractiveness has nothing to do with combat (which Kayden is a nutjob for), yet remained in his brain for some reason

— Eleven, reply to Fabi04:

Kayden and Kartein mention several times that Awakeners are power-based and have the mentality of ‘everyone for themselves’ (218 and 190 and others). This particular point is maybe more speculative than most previous points, but the hints of trust that seemingly exist between pre-canon Kayden and Kartein might be due to the fact that they didn't view each other as rivals in power. Although they supposedly didn't like each other due to personality (262), their goals for power are quite different. Kartein is primarily a healer, and while he is not shabby in combat, it's not his focus or his passion. (It could be argued that Kartein is only that good in combat to make sure he's not constantly taken advantage of). Meanwhile Kayden is very combat focused and has a passion for it. In short, they are not really threats to each other for what type of Awakened power they desire.

Therefore, they may have had a better foundation to build trust upon than if they had the same goal, in which case fighting and/or sabotage would have become necessary in order to establish Awakener hierarchy. Their goals can coexist without threat or challenge to the other person, which is a better mindset for building trust. This point is interesting to consider when looking at the other stated points in this post, which indicate a somewhat trusting pre-canon relationship

— Twelve, reply to I_Am_Not_Sure:

“Since when do you stay longer just because someone asks you to stay?” (190). This line could just indicate that Kayden has seen Kartein leave when he wants to. But since the conversation is a bit personal for them, I wouldn't be surprised if the quote is a bit personal too. As if Kartein has left when being asked to stay by Kayden. Definitely a more out-there point, but the way Kayden's expression is very quiet and serious while Kartien looks sad and thoughtful— might be a possibility

— Personal Rant:

“I'll lead the way as many times as you like” (140)?! The way this panel is shown had me going crazy. Nevermind Kayden simply handing over his child baby Jiwoo to Kartein as he fights (212), knowing that Kartein would protect him. If either of them were a woman they would 100% be a canon ship, it's fucking obvious. Nevermind them bantering like a married couple and moving in together with Kayden's adopted son Jiwoo, and Kayden following Kartein up to the damn mountaintops in another country out of concern. Heteronormativity robbed us of KarKay canon: my despair knows no bounds

Finally got around posting another Eleceed fic!

What is it about, you ask?

Well, here's the summary:

For years Kayden has coveted power, known nothing beyond it. A life now, where he doesn't have to fight to survive, where he can rest his head, is as unfamiliar as it's comfortable.

Or, Kayden's relationship with his power stands at odds with his relationship with Jiwoo and Kartein. He finds himself oscillating between extremes.

Comment Day has come to an end (though of course we encourage you to comment every day you read something,) and it's time to look back at our stats form!

We had a total of 226 responses!

Teen is still our most popular rating overall, but Gen took the second place slot from Mature since last time we updated.

The most popular category was still M/M, with F/M close behind.

It looks like short fiction took it, with the most popular length of fic being 2001-5000 words, but it's notable that in the expanded spreadsheet you can still see that fics of over 50k and 100k were recced as well.

We added the one-shot question later, but still got a good response! And you can see that there's a pretty even split between one-shot and chaptered, and this went back and forth several times over the course of the day.

We got too many responses for google forms to do a breakdown of which fandoms people were from, but breaking into the spreadsheet shows that most fandoms were recced once or twice! The exceptions are Harry Potter, with 23 recs, and 일렉시드 | Eleceed (Webcomic), with 18. Biohazard | Resident Evil (Gameverse) also had 8!

The results were pretty heavily slanted towards Ao3, but FF.net made a strong showing as the evening came!

Angst was our lead response for genre for most of the day, but AUs took it in the last few hours, at 29.3% Au and 27.4% Angst! With strong showings also by Fluff (25%), Romance (23.6%), Canon-Divergent (23.6%), and Hurt/Comfort (19.7%).
