Day 1: Elasmobranchology
Elasmobranchology is the study of modern sharks, sawfish, skates, and rays, also known as the subclass Elasmobranchii and class Chondrichthyes.
These cartilaginous fish are characterized by having five to seven pairs of gill clefts opening individually to the exterior, rigid dorsal fins and small placoid scales on the skin. The teeth should be layered and their jaw is never fused with their cranium, though the difference between jaw anatomy vary between species. Elasmobranchs do not have swim bladders and instead rely on large livers rich in oil to maintain buoyancy. Some deep sea sharks are targeted for this liver oil, including the school, gulper and basking sharks. All three have been assessed and are now confirmed to be threatened with extinction due to overfishing.
Let me know if you have a specific class/subclass you'd like me to do next :)

Hi all, I'm elasmobranchology - formally tardistudies! I renamed my blog a few months ago to fit my area of study (marine bio, currently cartilaginous fish lol). It's been a while since I posted anything really. I still lurk on here from time to time when I need a bit of motivation to do my coursework but it's been a while (years?) since I posted anything of my own :) I was super active on here back in 2016-18 and remember how much it helped, so for the last stretch of my masters degree I'm going to spend more time on this platform! Tumblr is the only social media I have these days so it'll be nice to stay connected while not surrendering my productivity.
Today I'm attempting to finish off a policy brief that's been in the making for weeks now. I have a jam packed weekend (work, commutes, christmas parties ~so on and so forth~), so this is going to be my sole focus for today and tomorrow.
Highlights ✨
Academic:
I just heard back that I got a first on my other piece of coursework for this module, which was much needed fuel for my academic fire.
Finished the suggestions section of my policy brief!
Non-academic:
I made vegan salmon (tofu) sushi bake for dinner which was delish
The sunset from my apartment window was gorgeous today. The whole sky was glowing with soft oranges and purples
🎧 currently listening to: treacherous - t.s.
Best fishes! 💗🦈

Plans For College I Guess?
Okay so I plan on going to Eckerd University down in Florida for Marine Biology. I was originally planing on going to University of Southeast Alaska but my mom and I talked and said Eckerd would be the best bet. If I am able to get in then that's great and I can go about a career as a marine biologist or better yet a career in elasmobranchology because of my love of sharks.
For those of you who don't know what elasmobranchology is it is the study of sharks and rays.

The extinct shark #Ptychodus had amazing "tiles" for teeth; they abutted one another inside the jaw, enabling the shark to eat hard prey, likely shelled mollusks. These bony tooth nodules had ridges for grip, central bumps (probably) for pressure points to crush shells, and were also quite beautiful to look at! @nhmu #paleontology #scicomm #science #usofscience #biology #zoology #geology #fossil #fossils #elasmobranchology #nhmu #naturalhistorymuseum #naturalhistorymuseumofutah #utah #saltlakecity #shark #sharks #marinebiology (at Natural History Museum of Utah) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpyQBwkgJVv/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=suojy5d981ce

I enjoyed the novel (and read it nearly a decade ago, before people ever saw the Discovery Channel hoax mockumentary), this comic is meh so far (and nicely called BS on its own book-inspired cover, but in the space of two pages spells the shark species name differently), but the movie...can't bring myself to watch it so far. I don't even want to give them my money. The trailer alone gave me high blood pressure. #meg #stevealten #scifi #sciencefiction #megalodon #carcharodonmegalodon #carcharoclesmegalodon #otodusmegalodon #cmegalodon #shark #sharks #comics #comicbooks #elasmobranch #elasmobranchology #selachimorpha #marinebiology #paleontology #biology #zoology #animals #animal #fossil #fossils #dinosaur #dinosaurs
