"In response to last year’s record-breaking heat due to El Niño and impacts from climate change, Indigenous Zenù farmers in Colombia are trying to revive the cultivation of traditional climate-resilient seeds and agroecology systems.

One traditional farming system combines farming with fishing: locals fish during the rainy season when water levels are high, and farm during the dry season on the fertile soils left by the receding water.

Locals and ecologists say conflicts over land with surrounding plantation owners, cattle ranchers and mines are also worsening the impacts of the climate crisis.

To protect their land, the Zenù reserve, which is today surrounded by monoculture plantations, was in 2005 declared the first Colombian territory free from GMOs.

In the Zenù reserve, issues with the weather, climate or soil are spread by word of mouth between farmers, or on La Positiva 103.0, a community agroecology radio station. And what’s been on every farmer’s mind is last year’s record-breaking heat and droughts. Both of these were charged by the twin impacts of climate change and a newly developing El Niño, a naturally occurring warmer period that last occurred here in 2016, say climate scientists.

Experts from Colombia’s Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies say the impacts of El Niño will be felt in Colombia until April 2024, adding to farmers’ concerns. Other scientists forecast June to August may be even hotter than 2023, and the next five years could be the hottest on record. On Jan. 24, President Gustavo Petro said he will declare wildfires a natural disaster, following an increase in forest fires that scientists attribute to the effects of El Niño.

In the face of these changes, Zenù farmers are trying to revive traditional agricultural practices like ancestral seed conservation and a unique agroecology system.

“Climate change is scary due to the possibility of food scarcity,” says Rodrigo Hernandez, a local authority with the Santa Isabel community. “Our ancestral seeds offer a solution as more resistant to climate change.”

Based on their experience, farmers say their ancestral seed varieties are more resistant to high temperatures compared to the imported varieties and cultivars they currently use. These ancestral varieties have adapted to the region’s ecosystem and require less water, they tell Mongabay. According to a report by local organization Grupo Semillas and development foundation SWISSAID, indigenous corn varieties like blaquito are more resistant to the heat, cariaco tolerates drought easily, and negrito is very resistant to high temperatures.

The Zenù diet still incorporates the traditional diversity of seeds, plant varieties and animals they consume, though they too are threatened by climate change: from fish recipes made from bocachico (Prochilodus magdalenae), and reptiles like the babilla or spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus), to different corn varieties to prepare arepas (cornmeal cakes), liquor, cheeses and soups.

“The most important challenge we have now is to save ancient species and involve new generations in ancestral practice,” says Sonia Rocha Marquez, a professor of social sciences at Sinù University in the city of Montería.

Farmers and seed custodians, like Gil, are working with the Association of Organic Agriculture and Livestock Producers (ASPROAL) and their Communitarian Seed House (Casa Comunitaria de Semillas Criollas y Nativas)...

Located near Gil’s house, the seed bank hosts a rainbow of 12 corn varieties, from glistening black to blue to light pink to purple and even white. There are also jars of seeds for local varieties of beans, eggplants, pumpkins and aromatic herbs, some stored in refrigerators. All are ancient varieties shared between local families.

Outside the seed bank is a terrace where chickens and turkeys graze under an agroforestry system for farmers to emulate: local varieties of passion fruit, papaya and banana trees grow above bushes of ají peppers and beans. Traditional medicinal herbs like toronjil or lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) form part of the undergrowth.

Today, 25 families are involved in sharing, storing and commercializing the seeds of 32 rare or almost-extinct varieties.

“When I was a kid, my father brought me to the farm to participate in recovering the land,” says Nilvadys Arrieta, 56, a farmer member of ASPROAL. “Now, I still act with the same collective thinking that moves what we are doing.”

“Working together helps us to save, share more seeds, and sell at fair price [while] avoiding intermediaries and increasing families’ incomes,” Gil says. “Last year, we sold 8 million seeds to organic restaurants in Bogotà and Medellín.”

So far, the 80% of the farmers families living in the Zenù reserve participate in both the agroecology and seed revival projects, he adds."

Reading journal 3 and seeing the relationship that Ford had with Shifty (the shapeshifter) made me think of an idea that involves Ford's partner with this creature.

I imagine that Reader follows the investigation of this creature very closely, but unlike Ford and McGucket, Reader treats Shifty in a similar way to a human baby, even playing games with him and trying to teach him to speak (reader was very excited hearing him speak even if his first words were "beans").

At some point Reader would try to teach him to read and write, first with the name Ford, then McGucket and then Reader, but something quite funny and cute at the same time happens when he tries to write their name, and it is that shifty writes "dear" instead of reader's name.

Ford laughs and corrects him by telling him that Dear is not Reader's name, The creature proceeds to write "honey" with all the confidence in the world, When Ford corrects him again, Shifty is very confused and begins to write several words, all of them being nicknames that Ford calls his partner (sweetie, darling, my love, sweetheart, etc.).

The poor creature is so confused that they decide to leave him alone and agree with him so he doesn't get stressed😅

BONUS:

Imagine that when Dipper, Mabel, Wendy and Soos go to the bunker, Reader decides to accompany them and that when they meet Shifty, Reader goes into angry mother/father/parent mode and Shifty, very afraid, tries to tell Reader that he was just joking while he is dragged by the ear (or whatever his ear is) by reader like a child being scolded by his mother after doing a prank.

leyendo el diario 3 y viendo la relacion que tenia ford con formy(el cambiaformas) me hizo pensar en una idea que involucra a la pareja de ford con esta criatura.

me imagino que lecto@ sigue muy de cerca la investigación de esta criatura, pero a diferencia de ford y mcgucket, trata a shifty de forma similar a un bebe humano, llegando a hacer juegos con el y tratando se enseñarle a hablar(se emocionó mucho al oirle hablar incluso si sus primeras palarbas fueron "frijoles").

en algún momento lector@ trataria de enseñarle a leer y escribir, primero con el nombre de ford, luego mcgucket y luego el de lector@, pero pasa algo bastante gracioso y tierno a la vez cuando trata de escribir su nombre, y es que shifty escribe "cariño" en vez del nombre de lector@.

ford se rie y le corrije diciéndole que cariño no es el nombre de lector@, la criatura procede a escribir "dulzura" con toda la seguridad del mundo, cuando ford le vuelve a corregir shifty esta muy confundido y empieza a escribir varias palabras, todas siendo apodos por los que ford llama a su pareja(tesoro, querid@, mi amor, corazon, etc).

la pobre criatura queda tan confundida que deciden dejarlo en paz y darle la razon para que no se estrese😅

imagina que cuando dipper, mabel, wendy y soos van al bunker lector@ decida acompañarlos y que cuando se encuentran con shifty reader se pone modo madre/padre enojad@ y Formy con mucho miedo trata de decirle a reader que solo estaba bromeando mientras es arrastrado por la oreja(o lo que sea su oreja) por lector@ como un niño siendo regañado por su madre tras hacer una travesura.

Acapulco necesita muchísima ayuda. Tras el paso del huracán Otis, el famoso paraíso guerrerense quedó terriblemente afectado. No hace falta que salgas de la CDMX para apoyarlos. En diferentes puntos de la capital se han montado centros de acopio que estarán recibiendo productos y víveres.

Eso no es todo, aquellos animales que viven en refugios, también merecen recibir ‘una patita’ de ayuda. Aquí te decimos cómo puedes aportar y dónde.

Centros de acopio en CDMX para ayudar a Acapulco

1. La Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), anunció que abrió un par de centros de acopio a partir del mediodía de hoy, jueves 26 de octubre. Están ubicados al lado de las astas bandera del Estadio Olímpico Universitario y en el Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco.

2. En horas recientes fue creado el perfil de Instagram @hazelbienxaca por la activista Saskia Niño de Rivera. La iniciativa destinada a reunir víveres tanto para personas como para mascotas damnificadas del puerto. El centro de acopio está en la calle Sierra Gorda 495, Lomas de Chapultepec, alcaldía Miguel Hidalgo. De 8:00 a.m. a 6:00 p.m.

3. El restaurante ‘Degú, cocina de casa’, también ha instalado un centro de acopio. Estarán reuniendo víveres en la calle Huichapan 25, en la Condesa, muy cerca del Parque España. Enviarán un camión a Acapulco con todo lo reunido el día 3 de noviembre. Más información en su Instagram: @degu.cocinadecasa.

4. Atma Yoga, estudio con 2 sucursales en CDMX, también se unió a Degú e instaló centros de acopio, ubicados en la calle Yucatán 69, colonia Roma Norte y calle Goldsmith 38, en Polanco.

Por su parte, la Cruz Roja Mexicana anunció que en las instalaciones de la Sede Nacional recibirán productos para los afectados. Se localiza en la calle Juan Luis Vives 200, Colonia Los Morales Polanco, alcaldía Miguel Hidalgo. Todos los días de 8:00 a.m. a 8:00 p.m.

¿Qué cosas debo llevar a los centros de acopio?

Aunque toda ayuda sirve, es recomendable primero revisar comunicados o redes sociales de los centros de acopio para tener conocimiento de los artículos que recibirán o que son de primera necesidad. En general, se está recolectando lo siguiente:

Para el hogar: escobas, cubetas, cloro, jabón en polvo, guantes de plástico, fibra, cepillo tipo plancha, limpiador para pisos, jalador, recogedor, franelas y jergas.

Alimentos: aceite, arroz, frijol, lenteja, azúcar, sal, agua embotellada, leche en polvo; enlatados como atún/sardinas, café soluble, chiles, mayonesa y mermelada; en sobres como sopas de pasta, cubos de consomé, harina para atole y chocolate en polvo.

Higiene personal: rollos de papel higiénico, jabón de barra, pasta dental, toallas femeninas, zacate, toallas húmedas, desodorante, pañales, rastrillos, peines, cepillos dentales y toallas faciales.

Artículos de primeros auxilios: gasas, vendas, suero, agua oxigenada, alcohol, desinfectantes de heridas, gel antibacterial.

Herramientas: carretillas, barretas, palas y picos.

Ropa en buen estado.

Cobijas.

Ayuda a un refugio de Animales en Acapulco

Porque los seres humanos no fueron los únicos que vivieron el devastador paso de Otis. Cientos de perros, gatos y demás animales también severamente afectados, por lo que ellos también necesitan ayuda.

Había una vez un hombre llamado Carlos, un amante de la comida y las aventuras. Carlos decidió tomarse unas vacaciones diferentes: en lugar de alojarse en hoteles lujosos o playas paradisíacas, alquiló una casa rodante y se embarcó en un viaje gastronómico por todo el país.

Su primera parada fue en una pequeña hamburguesería en las afueras de la ciudad. El reto era simple: comer una docena de hamburguesas gigantes en menos de una hora. Carlos se relamió los labios y se zambulló en la montaña de carne, queso y pan. El sudor corría por su frente mientras masticaba y tragaba, pero no se rindió. Al final, con el estómago a punto de reventar, logró completar el desafío.

La siguiente parada fue en un pueblo famoso por su pastelería. Allí, Carlos se enfrentó a un pastel del tamaño de una rueda de carro. Las capas de chocolate, crema y frutas parecían interminables. Carlos se sentó frente al pastel y comenzó a cavar con su tenedor. Cada bocado era una explosión de dulzura en su boca. Al final, con las migas esparcidas por toda la mesa, Carlos se levantó victorioso.

El burrito gigante lo esperaba en un restaurante mexicano en el desierto. Carlos se envolvió en una manta para protegerse del calor abrasador y se enfrentó al monstruo de tortilla, carne, frijoles y guacamole. Cada mordisco era como una expedición a través de sabores intensos y picantes. Carlos sudaba y se reía mientras luchaba por terminar el burrito. Pero lo hizo, y se sintió como un auténtico luchador.

La pizza gigante estaba en una pizzería junto al mar. Carlos miró la enorme masa cubierta de queso derretido y toppings coloridos. Se sentó en la terraza con vista al océano y comenzó a devorar porciones del tamaño de su cabeza. El queso se estiraba entre sus dedos mientras masticaba con entusiasmo. Al final, con la barriga hinchada y una sonrisa en el rostro, Carlos se recostó en su silla.

Por último, el filete de carne grande lo llevó a una granja en las montañas. El chef asó un enorme corte de carne en una parrilla al aire libre. Carlos lo acompañó con papas asadas y verduras frescas. Cada bocado era tierno, jugoso y lleno de sabor. Carlos se sintió como un rey en su trono de carne.

Al final del viaje, Carlos regresó a casa con kilos de más y una sonrisa satisfecha. Su casa rodante estaba llena de recuerdos culinarios y muebles que crujían bajo su peso. Pero no se arrepentía. Después de todo, la vida es demasiado corta para no disfrutar de la comida al máximo.
