i think i understand the assumption on some level for undertale, because there is a very intentional effort to make you identify with the "player character" in order to make your choices feel like your own (the beating heart of undertale's metanarrative lies in giving you an alternative path to violence against its enemies after all, and whether you're still willing to persue it for your own selfish reasons. YOUR agency is crucial).

of course, the cardinal plot twist of the main ending sweeps the rug from under your feet on that in every way, and frisk's individuality becomes, in turn, a tool to further UT's OTHER main theme: completionism as a form of diegetic violence within the story. replaying the game would steal frisk's life and happy ending from them for our own perverse sentimentality, emotionally forcing our hand away from the reset button.

i think their neutrality absolutely aids in that immersion. but also, there's this weird attitude by (mostly) cis fans where it being functional within the story makes it... somehow "editable" and "up to the player" as well? which is gross and shows their ass on how they approach gender neutrality in general lol.

but also like. there's plenty of neutral, non PCharacters in undertale and deltarune. even when undertale was just an earthbound fangame and the player immersion metanarrative was completely absent, toby still described frisk as a "young, androgynous person". sometimes characters are just neutral by design. it's not that hard to understand lol.

Hello I have an ao3/fandom thought I think you might appreciate (sorry in advance for the long ramble in your inbox, I apparently have a lot of thoughts on this topic). I think this fandom (mostly the main 911 show, but I've seen it a bit for lone star too) conflates the 'critical' and 'bashing' concepts far too much which causes more drama and hurt feelings than is warranted.

To me, those are two different things - the concept of bashing is, to me, taking a behaviour and pushing it to its absolute extreme and seeing what results (e.g. Diaz family bashing fics where Helena and Ramon specifically want to have permanent custody of Christopher to keep him dependent on them). And don't get me wrong, this can be very fun when you're in the mood, much like a stupid horror film or a romcom!

Comparatively, at least to me, the idea of a 'critical' tag is exploring what a character actually does in canon in a way the show doesn't. So, to follow with our example, a Diaz family critical fic might explore the way Pepa is rude about Shannon within Chris' earshot, or that time Helena hired caterers and also did all the cooking herself, does that make sense?

I've been seeing a lot of 'Eddie bashing' fics and concepts in the last couple weeks, and honestly to me a lot of them aren't bashing in the way I understand the word - criticising Eddie for what he did with Kim and Marisol, or for the kitchen scene with Buck, or his 'mistakes' with Christopher, and exploring some realistic consequences of those canonical actions isn't character bashing to me (although I understand it might be to others)

I don't really know what my point is I just kinda thought you might get this and maybe have some thoughts of your own on it? I just think the fandom might be a nicer place if we separated out the two concepts a bit more sometimes ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

no I totally get you and I agree! "critical" and "bashing" are WORLDS apart, normally.

"critical" allows for growth. it acknowledges the problems (in Eddie's case: his treatment of women in his life, his treatment of Buck, his tendency to make decisions without consulting others, etc), but it doesn't exaggerate them. "critical" does not outright demonise poor behaviour, but it spotlights it, and narratively frames the problem AS a problem that should be solved.

"bashing" on the other hand, is often exaggerated. it makes no room for growth or redemption, the opportunities for either are often destroyed off the cuff. there is NO positive resolution when it comes to "bashing" fics because they're not meant to be used that way. they exist as catharsis for the fans who are angry/embittered/upset/hurt by a character or story arc. it is MEANT to be harsh and cruel and sometimes outright OOC, because the entire point of them is to bash the character and make them as irredeemable as possible, so when Bad Things Happen to that character, the audience is HAPPY about it.

this fandom is far from my first, but it is THE first I've been in where the line between "critical" and "bashing" has been so thoroughly blurred and often just ignored outright. I've seen people tagging "critical" posts/fics with "bashing" and vice versa, and it always frustrates me. these terms exist for a purpose. there is a difference between these terms for a purpose.

I think this confusion - not to play the generational card here - is mostly coming from gen z fans of the show. This is, for many of them, their first Big fandom, and it shows in the way they behave. there has been a disturbing trend that I've noticed with younger folks, especially recently, where any sort of criticism is viewed as "cancelling" or outright "bullying", when that's not the case at all. and so they've conflated this idea of criticism = cruelty and they've imposed it onto fandom content, ignoring fandom etiquette and rules that have been here for decades already, in order to accuse those of us who ARE "critical" of being bigoted or cruel.

there's also a strange rise in parasocialism, especially in this fandom, where some fans act as though these characters are real people and can be realistically hurt by the "critical" side of fandom. which to me is just baffling. they're not real. I could go right now and write a fic where Eddie has to gargle hot coals, and nothing would actually happen to anyone in real life. Hell, I could go and write a fic where Buck gets every single bone in his body shattered into dust, and still, nobody would actually be hurt. because he is fictional. he doesn't exist.

I'm getting off track.

the point is, yeah, "critical" and "bashing" are in the same neighbourhood of fandom content, but they're on totally different streets. "critical" is looking at the house being built and thinking "oh, not the best foundation for something that big". meanwhile "bashing" is down the block staring at a crackden infested with rats and black mold and saying "haha time to set it on FIRE!" you know what I mean?

My limited understanding is that death is not death but the end of an era into a new beginning. Which fits Rui, who's ended being a human ghoul who could be--and likely was--free with his touch as he was with his tongue and become a reaper ghoul with whom the slightest accidental brush of skin is the end of life, who frequently hides away and avoids others and fears the contact he once loved. And, with that power, comes his effect on others--their life force ceasing being their own and becoming energy to keep him alive and awake for. . .possibly ever if he's not careful. Seems fitting to me but that's just my very limited understanding. Preheating has warped every single one of my non-stick pans. I thought you were supposed to get pans ripping hot before cooking, but ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ Apparently there is a such thing as too much heat. Is it the induction stove? Cheap pans? Am I just bad at this?

Warping is caused by severe temp fluctuations, where one part of the pan is VERY HOT and the other is VERY COLD. The metal bends & you end up with a warped pan/pot.

This can also be caused by a cheap pan giving way to stress, but is most often from EITHER adding cold ingredients onto one side of a very hot pan, OR taking a hot pan and dumping cold water onto it to rinse it.

It can also happen if you use a teeny tiny stovetop burner on a big pan. The center gets hot but the outer edge stays cold.

There are guides online that involve heating it up and beating it with a hammer, but I've never tried it myself. (yet <_< )

therefore. if we go with that Any animations are sentient in one way or another in the universe (and possibly created with the same logic alan's hollows were made with: draw, convert to movie clip, live.), it's way easier to imagine how sticks would be easily resorted to something more weak and easy to boss around. if you, say, animate a walk cycle of a horse and it becomes alive, you'd have a way bigger problem if you mistreat it and then try to take the reigns of it (VERY much seen in ava 4 when alan tries to fight nonstickfigure creations) — but stickfigures? they're an easy-to-make workforce !!

and considering how animations being sentient would be the norm, the possible attachment that comes with it — of course it would be grim to imagine animations being mistreated like that

and also pondering my orb on freedom guy in general. i feel like they might be either an internet nomad / or both a citizen of outernet and an eventual internet wanderer. the whole reason they know of stick slavery is because of either seeing it happen on the internet/visiting other people's pcs and see it happen

the latter could work with for example vics arrival. it goes quite well into the timeline! vic arrives -> the word of what they saw in the interspace is spread -> rocket and others begin to work on how to get out there -> freedom amongst them -> first interspace travel begins (potentially where the interspace trains started) -> freedom sees the treatment of sticks on other pcs -> manifesto is created somewhere prior 2011. that's only one way it can go though.

There are lots of examples of when the creators of a thing are like, we want to do middle-of-the-road eye candy, but also, we like to front that we're better than that? so here's a flimsy excuse for why Actiongirl McBadass has to look like / would totally choose to dress like that, that is frankly more insulting than if we'd just said yes we know it's unrealistic but sex sells ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

But, Buffy the Vampire Slayer actually isn't that. Sure, it's an American TV show so you definitely have the whole nondiagetic makeup, all women with a BMI over 19 were banished in the Purge thing going on, but on this one occasion, they actually did write a character who would go out to fight vampires in kitten heels and lipgloss.

Not "because being so sexy is distracting to her enemies" or some bs, but because she's desperately trying to cling to a sense of self that her destiny is at odds with, and that's an important source of conflict and point of interest for her as a character, especially early on in the show.

And while we can absolutely critique the hell out of the image she's attached to*, it makes perfect sense that she's attached to it. She kinda won the lottery looks-wise especially given her time and place, and she will have gotten attached to the idea of everything her society told her that could mean for her - being the Ideal American Girl, the cheerleader! - and the fate she's been handed is so dismal, and she's so young. And it's not like (as with a lot of the examples I would criticise) she chose this life either, which makes a big difference imo. In real life, a woman who is in an Actiongirl role due to say her career choice comes preselected for willingness to put her hair in a fucking ponytail so she can fucking see who she is fighting.

Anyway Buffy is good. I mean it's not in all the ways it's not, but also, it is.

*just off the top of my head - there are the racist undertones of the idealisation of the Blonde as the "All-American" ideal of feminine beauty, the normcore elevation of blandness, the misogyny of how everyone agrees she's got to not intimidate men physically or intellectually, the very fact that it's incompatible with dressing sensibly for physical activity or defending oneself, the class stuff around the clothing side of it, the way this image of femininity is at least partially built on tearing other women down as falling short in one direction or another - too weird, too ethnic, too slutty, too prudish, too smart, too tacky,etc etc....

This post is a follow up to the previous reblog post to update what's going between me and Cagney alongside other associates in the group that I have departed from a while back.

During the afternoon I just received a response from one of the group members yesterday which I will respectfully keep anonymous but I think only a handful of people will know who it is regardless of the edited screenshot when reading further on this post.

We'll be taking this interaction step by step to construct some criticisms, make statements and opinions of the overall message.

Here's the first half of the message sent to my inbox:

One thing to clarify is that I'm not being dense when I know that the group and you included, tend to nitpick at a lot of things. I was aware prior to what were the few reasons for being cut off before the announcement of my departure given the tension between the group conversations in the private community.

Now that's not to say that there wasn't a good point made for kicking me out!

Especially given the number 1 point made on your list.

1. I won't lie that giving away crucial details and conversations within screenshots was something I did totally out of left field. I knew that it was against the community's group protocol which I did get chewed out for showing the screenshots to Zombify.

But-

If I had not gone back and forth between two groups then I wouldn't have been given crucial details from Blurry's end about him doing a Cease and Desist order onto the Moboxcritique/TheGoldFiles Blog along with Kevonica being the primary suspect of quote on quote "Harassment" or "Defamation". Meaning that if Blurry had sent you a Cease and Desist letter, you'd be given a warning and restricted from posting on the blog that mentions him which would've led to possibly going to court/legal actions if you had gone any further with the drama to criticize him more. Then there's a possibility that the blog as a whole would've been taken down prior to its deactivation if Blurry did go to court with Kevonica and the blog given how much he'd get the judge and the jury to side with him regardless of what was put against him on the Moboxcritique blog's documents, posts or archives to justify your actions from calling him out.

So, yes I fucked up in leaking the group's conversation but at a cost of knowing about the Cease and Desist order ahead of time until a mutual agreement was made to keep the Blurry drama under the rug.

Then of course, I shared this post revealing a recorded conversation between Anonymous123maybe/Tammy Tuna and Miles to show that Miles never changed. This was another thing I got chewed out for publicly sharing but it was from Kevonica this time.

But did Anonymous123maybe/Tammy Tuna mind?

No

Plus, Miles only proved our suspicions correct.

2. I don't know why you need to rub it in that you and the group you're associated with have been victims of abuse when I've been through a mentally abusive relationship prior. It's not a competition or comparison to be made and I can understand that we can all take a stand in getting ourselves out of abuse and have it be known or unknown. Either way, if this is a complaint for being in defense for Piaojun's artwork of William x Renata in our chats together or on my "Parting Ways" post then I don't wanna hear it but even if it's not. Then it's likely about my other post discussing the themes of Mobox87's art work.

So, let me put it out there as simple as I can get. On my draft script post "Understanding", we talked about domestic abuse being an often taboo theme projected in Mobox87's stories and visual illustrations. The key important details mentioned are what likely inspired her and how it's become a progressive cycle that it feels romanticized but most importantly that it's a sensitive topic that can still work with storytelling.

We can all agree that Mobox87 always makes the abuser superior in a majority of her stories and I get that in this harsh reality that it is true the victims tend to lose or not survive from domestic abuse but when it's a constant visual being shown with each different story variation told. It gets bothersome to the viewer and you question the morality of the person behind the story. So, it's completely understandable to be critical about it. Now for the theme of that to work in a story, you wanna project it in a way where it can appeal to the audience. Such as the victim surviving or getting out of the situation. Other cases would be showing the victim getting some moral support through the trauma of abuse.

I know that I mentioned the episode "Mad Love" from the 1997 "The New Batman Adventures" series, a follow show to "Batman The Animated Series" from 1992. I go over how Harley Quinn's relationship with The Joker and how it projects the abusive relationship very well to the audience as a way to educate the consequences of what happens between the abuser and the victim or a toxic relationship. Heck we even see in the Harley Quinn show that she practically leaves Joker after realizing she was only being used. Another good example would be in the show Steven Universe on the episode "Alone at Sea". Where Lapis tells Jasper that she doesn't want to be a part of their unhealthy relationship anymore which if you're aware of them being fused together under the ocean for a long time from watching previous episodes you'll get why she doesn't wanna go back and that projected the importance of asserting boundaries and leaving when someone is abusive towards you.

Anyways, let me rewind things back to "Romanticized abuse with your strange takes upon things". I wanna make this clear I DON'T romanticize abuse and you know DAMN well that I don't when I've made it clear on a few occasions when you shit talk about Piaojun behind their back that they have no intentions of wanting to project the characters William and Renata the way Mobox87 has done. Even if they did have, it was illustrations projected to tell it's story purposes between the characters crucial fate of relationships departing. Like I get the idea you don't like the ship and the same can be said with a bunch of other people in or outside your group but don't ever drag your battles upon someone else who doesn't wanna associate with the drama. Let alone DON'T BITCH about what someone is doing between two characters who they clearly want to change from their original story for the better. You don't dictate what others can or cannot do in art especially if that person is doing their own thing. If you can't agree with that then FUCK OFF. I have my own morals and mutual understanding that are common sense. I'm not going to judge someone and make publicity about it unless necessary. You should know better. YOU DO NOT SPEAK FOR THE ARTIST'S VISIONS AND DECISIONS THEY MAKE! Yes you can be critical but there's a limit and you are pushing it to your own judgements that are opinionative. So, get over it. No one does that to your own work and if people have then your just projecting that negativity onto others.

3. So, I wanna mention that YES I did force Cagney to reblog my post because I simply wanted a favor and if you or anyone had read the post "Parting Ways" you'd understand how frustrating it was to get them to post it. Like honestly you of all people should know that I've been supporting Cagney and Patty when I got involved in this drama when you reached out.

I literally reblogged posts when it came to talking about Mobox87, Nicole, Mobox87's brother SonicCrash, The FON game's process of dealing with its supposed virus issues, Mobox87's sales prices, Mobox87's harassment and especially topics about Miles! I shared heavy amounts of criticisms and gave out my opinion on things that Cagney would publicly post about while they gained more attention for it! So when I asked for the favor to help me with the situation about Arion the Kid/Blue's Journey that I was gonna go over with Red Radiant and others who were victims. I expected some help but instead I got the short end of the stick because-

This topic about aging up a character is known to be a mixed opinion or controversial to some people. So, I'm just going to say this.

Like if an artist (like myself) made fanart of a character aged up preferably for a new narrative or head canon story and it's deemed not okay.
