If you like solo gameplay, horrible oceanic critters, economic horror, and survival, you may enjoy these words.
Also the art by Nicholai Fletcher and Marcin S came out gorgeous. The thumbnail is not showing you this, it refuses to present you with the adorable little bobbit worm inviting friends into its domain, but if you click you will see its beauty.

How can you make $100 every day as an 11-year-old?
This post is a response to a question initially posed on Quora, and can also be accessed via “https://www.quora.com/How-can-you-make-100-every-day-as-an-11-year-old/answer/Antonio-Amaral-1“ An 11-year-old trying to generate $100 daily is a travesty of epically dysfunctional proportions for society. That’s a friggin horror show straight out of a Dickens novel. An 11-year-old should be playing…

when my grandfather moved to the us after living through wwii in occupied norway he said the most striking thing he noticed here was the waste. the wastefulness, the sheer amount of excess stuff and the fever for consumption and how blasé people were as they threw it all away. and despite nominal awareness of the issue since then and and sometimes-counterproductive efforts to recycle, overconsumption trends have only gotten worse. trash, like any other ‘flow’ of materials, goods, etc, has gone global, and accumulates unevenly between where it is produced and where its burdens fall
which is a tangible, material disaster for the people living next to incinerators and landfills (in environmental justice communities of the imperial core; or abroad, in the poor countries where the rich ones dump their waste), and for the people doing the also-toxic and dangerous work extracting all the materials and making the things that are destined for the landfill, and it’s also a psychological and paradigmatic disaster for the overconsumers: to be so disconnected from where your stuff comes from and what it really costs, to expect endless cheap varieties of food and consumer goods from all over the world, to think no further than the instant gratification of next-day-delivered fast fashion orders or a new phone every year, to not realize that what you throw out never really goes away. the ‘western consumer lifestyle’, wherever it’s practiced, depends on and enforces the willful ignorance of its consequences and the disinclination to see other people and places as real. and while most waste is industrial, not just your personal household trash, the finished products you throw out have an industrial history too, and are tied to far more waste than you’ll ever personally see. which is to say not just ‘we shouldn’t buy so many things’ or ‘we shouldn’t send our trash to be dumped in other people’s countries’ - true, but also most of these things should never even be made
#this is a very broad point ofc much more to say from many angles#bought a stupid cheap umbrella this morning bc I lost mine and thought abt the horrors of it all#still in the supply chain spiral but idk if I’d call it enrichment. spectator to a train wreck maybe#waste#consumerism#skravler#economic geography

the fact that it seems that a lot of families (in yankland at least) willing to adopt are conservative christian households and for them it has missionary character aka to indoctrinate as many kids as possible to their cult🤐
#liz.txt#and ofc they take kids from vulnerable economically disadvantaged mothers#i feel like adoptive families attitudes are prime example how children are seen as commodity in society#got to some adoption horror story on tt and under impression#currently#obv in biofams children/commodity thing is also noticeable but its the most blatant in adoption imo

But the monster also makes us realize that in an unequal society they are not equal. Not because they belong to different ‘races’ but because inequality really does score itself into one’s skin, one’s eyes and one’s body. And more so, evidently, in the case of the first industrial workers: the monster is disfigured not only because Frankenstein wants him to be like that, but also because this was how things actually were in the first decades of the industrial revolution. In him, the metaphors of the critics of civil society become real. The monster incarnates the dialectic of estranged labour described by the young Marx: ‘the more his product is shaped, the more misshapen the worker; the more civilized his object, the more barbarous the worker; the more powerful the work, the more powerless the worker; the more intelligent the work, the duller the worker and the more he becomes a slave of nature… . It is true that labour produces … palaces, but hovels for the worker… . It produces intelligence, but it produces idiocy and cretinism for the worker.’ Frankenstein’s invention is thus a pregnant metaphor of the process of capitalist production, which forms by deforming, civilizes by barbarizing, enriches by impoverishing – a two-sided process in which each affirmation entails a negation. And indeed the monster – the pedestal on which Frankenstein erects his anguished greatness – is always described by negation: man is well proportioned, the monster is not; man is beautiful, the monster ugly; man is good, the monster evil. The monster is man turned upside-down, negated.
— Franco Moretti, "The Dialectic of Fear."

*crawls onto dash like an axolotl*
i- i am alone. back home. writing time.
#I got halfway through Authority and it's honestly pretty baller. I think the protagonist will connect less with most people but#It still has that juicy juicy deranged Annihilation flavor. Oh your family was fucked up and that's why you can understand The Horrors#I want to carry the author over the threshold bridal style or something.#Also I got halfway through 'Foundations' which was written by a physicist noble prize winner with grossly inflated sense of ego who#was trying to make a religion out of Abductive Reasoning while barely knowing how Abductive Reasoning works. All his social takes#were fascinatingly bad (not wrong to be clear; just bad examples no solid logic) and he also clearly gave the halflife of C14#and proceeded to say that we used it for figuring out Neanderthals were in Europe a few hundred thousand years ago.#I swear to god physicists should have emotional support geologists they can consult on the phone whenever they're feeling#a bit spicy about psychology and philosophy and it would save the world half a dozen bad takes.#His physics and 'layman' outline of how the physical world works though was really good. I quite liked that though. I would've#finished the book except it's my brother's and it's not good enough I would steal it. Except that fucker bought#THE ALTERATION OF ECONOMIC GEOLOGY and for HIMSELF not ME and that I might yoink lol.#Anyway COOL I AM BACK IN MY OWN BED I CAN RESPOND TO SOME EMAILS AND TRY TO AIM FOR CHAPT 34#I hope everyone had a really good Christmas! <3#ptxt

AU ask: Satine Lives
send me an au and i’ll give you 5+ headcanons about it
I think she deserves a cool facial scar. As a treat.
Running with the Rebellion. She's too powerful a symbol to be allowed to take her seat as Duchess back, especially if she decides to work with Bo-Katan; pacifism may be incredibly important to her, but there is a limit to how far you can push someone before they engage in self-defense, and even as ardent a pacifist as Satine will rally her people to survive the Empire. With her and Bo working together, they can do a lot... and that's why the Empire will absolutely not allow either of them to become leader of Mandalore again. (So it goes to Korkie, who the Empire believes is little more than a puppet. They think they know about his little violations of the law, and so they miss the big ones, like smuggling force-sensitive children and O66-survivors away from the Empire.)
She doesn't know Obi-Wan is alive, because Bail forgot to get permission to tell her, until 10 years post-RotS... when Bail invites her to greet "Ben" and Leia on their return to safety on Alderaan. She promises to visit him, if there's a chance.
(She doesn't. Instead, he visits her. Satine is far more likely to be tracked to Tatooine than he is, after all.)
She still doesn't pick up a blaster, though; canon gives us some pretty solid evidence for her PTSD preventing her from being any use at it. However, she's very convincing and is very good at getting on-the-fence politicians on the Rebellion's side... and donating credits, rations, and transports to the cause. (Some even donate weapons. She... tries to ignore that part. She lets it happen, but... it hurts.)
#satine kryze#I genuinely believe she would hit her breaking point if the Empire took Mandalore#Part of the issue with involving Mandalore in the Clone War was that they were still recovering and too weak economically#and in other ways to even consider joining a war that hadn't touched them yet#part of it was overall pacifism and part of it was not being told about the CIS war crimes and so not KNOWING why diplomacy wouldn't work#but part of it was also just that they Could Not Afford It; a half-dead mid rim planet had so much more to risk than like. Alderaan#But if the war and horrors came to Mandalore's doorstep and started breaking the people down and salting what little earth was left...#what choice is there if they want to survive? They couldn't join TCW because it would kill what was left of them.#They couldn't NOT join the war on the Empire because it was already killing what was left of them#star wars#phoenix answers memes

Anxiety is fuelled by the ease with which walls and fences can be crossed. No one, in their expensive apartments or, even, in secure psychiatric units, seems to be safe. The ‘“gothic” rapport between persons and places’ has turned into a ‘pervasion’ of all symbolic and social spaces by terror and horror (Seltzer, 1995: 145): no longer is the rapport localised in a house or castle; it extends across all social and subjective relations. A Gothic tone spreads to the most unexpected areas, the well-lit and luxurious bathrooms of white yuppie apartments being the most unlikely in the film.

The gothicisation of the most banal and apparently innocuous social spaces remains tied to the circulation of anxiety and fear in a consumer society so that even the acceptable and mundane enclaves of middle-class life, the suburbs, resort to Gothic patterns. Kim Michasiw argues that the ‘gated community’ resuscitates a gothic mood in ‘disneyfied’ terms: the community itself becomes ‘the avatar of the threatened maiden’ (Michasiw, 248). Significantly, the image reduces a community to a single threatened body. In this model, the gated community both condenses all threatening features in a single egotistical individual and, at the same time, recognises that such a model has expanded to cover the evacuated terrain once called ‘society’. The imaginary, once a model of subjective development and symbolic integration, substitutes itself for all social relations.

In Lacan, identity is an effect of identification, the inverted image of the body in the mirror being recognised as oneself: the reflection of bodily integrity allows for the projection of psychological unity and, in turn, the assumption of social identity. An effect, then, of external appearance that unifies corporeal fragmentation, the image in the mirror, is translated in dreams in the form of fortified buildings. As it is opened up and expanded to cover all social relations, this version of the imaginary is simultaneously more exposed and in greater and constant need of protection and fortification against the forces that would dissipate its integrity. Imaginary boundaries, however, remain hard to police: look into the mirror and utter his name five times. Candyman … Candyman … Candyman … Candyman …

Fred Botting, Limits of Horror: Technology, Bodies, Gothic Candyman (1992) dir. Bernard Rose
#this chapter kind of meandered for a bit but the gothic economics section entered interesting territory#and he was right about one thing: neoliberalism is a never ending horror show!!!#anyway periodic reminder to all to watch candyman please#the zoomed in and off balance frame of her dissolving into the city was an inspired one#the artifice of sanctuary that is the city peopled by 'individuals. not a society'#candyman#films#fred botting#the gothic imagination#suburban gothic#🎬.mp4#lit tag

I'm pouring one out for Jackie having to go down to packed shopping centers in the freezing cold to report on the Christmas shopping season. Probably on multiple islands.
Morgans gave her a list of things to pick up at the mall on one of these outings and she nearly tied it around his beak
The holiday work season definitely takes the fun out of the actual celebration for her. She does so much work and some random fictional MAN gets all the glory? It burns her up on the inside!
Sure in front of customers and the like she can put on a gleeful expression but boy howdy the second she finds herself back on the ship, absolutely no one is spared from her Christmas rants!
The winds are harsh and unforgiving and find all the cracks in her jacket and gloves no matter the quality or cut, Christmas carollers keep trying to drag her into their songs, and if someone calls her Santa's Little Helper one more time!
Morgans in particular gets the brunt of it (because he’s the one making her do this in the first place) and he honestly find her fury hilarious! Jackie's not an angry person by nature, easily annoyed sure but angry? Only Old Saint Nick can bring out this side of her!
#at least she doesn’t have to deal with the horrors on constant looping Christmas music#small mercies and all that#one piece#one piece oc#Jackie#big news morgans#world economic journal#wej

I saw your tag on the US policy contributing to Israel, which I know about, but what is the thing about Christianity needing Israel full of Jews to bring about the apocalypse?
So it's long and complicated historically, but you can read a little here in the Christian Zionism Wikipedia entry.
But in brief: "Some Christian Zionists believe that the gathering of the Jews in Israel is a prerequisite for the Second Coming of Jesus. The idea has been common in Protestant circles since the Reformation that Christians should actively support a Jewish return to the Land of Israel, along with the parallel idea that the Jews ought to be encouraged to become Christians as a means of fulfilling biblical prophecy."
So, y'know antisemitic in the same general arena as messianic jews, where the Jewish people are like dehumanized into a sort of lever that exists only to allow the xian prophet to return, have all the bad nonxian Others (includes anyone queer, non-white, disabled, etc etc) conveniently handwaved into extinction and they live in literal paradise forever. A bunch of those guys are part of the US government and have been for decades.
#it's pretty fucked up#try not to think about how much of the current environmental and economic and other horrors come from this#no way to tell but the answer is a nonzero amount which is plenty horrifying

The World Without Phones: A Journey into Chaos and Communication Breakdown
Imagine waking up one day to find that phones, as we know them, have become nonexistent. The comforting buzz of notifications, the ability to connect with loved ones at a moment's notice, and the vast ocean of information at our fingertips have vanished. In this reality, the repercussions would be monumental, transforming every aspect of our daily lives and plunging society into chaos.
Communication Breakdown
The first and most immediate impact would be the breakdown of communication. In our hyper-connected world, phones have become the primary means of interaction. Without them, people would revert to more traditional forms of communication—face-to-face conversations, letters, and landlines. While these methods could still facilitate connections, they would also slow down the pace of life significantly. Urgent messages, quick check-ins, and instant updates would be replaced by long waits and uncertainty.
The lack of real-time communication could lead to misunderstandings and heightened tensions. In a world where timely responses are crucial—such as in emergencies, business dealings, or even social coordination—the absence of phones would create a chaotic environment. Friendships would strain under the pressure of miscommunication, family members would find it difficult to stay in touch, and the very fabric of relationships would fray.
Impact on Business and Economy
Businesses, too, would face dire consequences. The modern workforce thrives on speed and efficiency, much of which relies on mobile communication. Without phones, remote work would become nearly impossible, stifling productivity and collaboration. Entrepreneurs and small businesses would struggle to reach customers, leading to a significant economic downturn.
Logistics and supply chains, heavily dependent on instant communication, would collapse. Delays in shipments, breakdowns in coordination, and the inability to track inventory in real time would lead to shortages and chaos in markets. The global economy, already fragile, would face unprecedented challenges, with many businesses forced to close their doors permanently.
Emergency Response and Public Safety
Perhaps the most alarming consequence of a world without phones would be the impact on public safety and emergency response systems. In times of crisis—natural disasters, medical emergencies, or public threats—the ability to communicate quickly and effectively is paramount. Without phones, emergency services would struggle to respond swiftly to incidents, leading to lost lives and increased risk.
Communities would face vulnerability, as people would be unable to report emergencies or receive crucial alerts. The lack of coordination among law enforcement, firefighters, and medical services would create a perfect storm for chaos. Panic would ensue, and trust in public institutions could erode, fostering a sense of fear and helplessness.
Social Isolation and Mental Health Decline
As phones have become integral to our social lives, their absence would lead to widespread feelings of isolation and loneliness. People rely on their devices to connect with friends and family, share experiences, and find support. Without phones, many would struggle to maintain these connections, leading to increased mental health issues.
Isolation could exacerbate existing mental health conditions, leading to a surge in anxiety and depression. The younger generation, already facing challenges with social interactions, would find it particularly difficult to navigate friendships and relationships without the immediate connections provided by their phones.
Information Void and Misinformation
In today's world, information flows seamlessly through our devices. News updates, educational resources, and social media platforms keep us informed. Without phones, access to information would be significantly hindered. People would revert to traditional news sources such as newspapers and television, which may not provide the immediacy or comprehensive coverage that today’s digital platforms offer.
This information void could lead to increased susceptibility to misinformation. In the absence of real-time fact-checking and reliable sources, rumors could spread like wildfire, leading to panic and confusion. The challenge of discerning truth from falsehood would become a societal crisis, as people struggle to find reliable information amidst the chaos.
Cultural Shift and Adaptation
While the immediate consequences of a world without phones would be chaotic, it could also lead to a profound cultural shift. People might be forced to reconnect with their surroundings, engage in face-to-face conversations, and rediscover the beauty of human interaction. Communities could come together in ways that have been lost in the digital age, fostering a sense of belonging and shared experience.
However, this shift would not come without its challenges. Adapting to a slower pace of life would require significant adjustments. The relentless rush of modernity would give way to a more deliberate way of living, which might be welcomed by some but resisted by others who thrive in the fast-paced digital world.
Conclusion
The prospect of a world without phones is a daunting one, fraught with challenges that could lead to chaos and societal decline. Communication breakdowns, economic turmoil, public safety risks, social isolation, and the struggle for information would create a perfect storm of crises.
Yet, amidst the chaos, there lies the potential for transformation. Society could emerge with a renewed appreciation for face-to-face interactions, community bonds, and the power of human connection. The journey would be fraught with difficulties, but it could also lead to growth and a deeper understanding of what it means to be human in an increasingly connected world.
In the end, the absence of phones would force us to confront not only the chaos that ensues but also the core elements of our identity and our relationships with one another. It would be a test of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring power of human connection.
