His reactiveness
Reactive and intense are not synonyms.
I guess you may wanna check this first for context, but you don't necessarily have to.
A lot of folks think of Carmy as non-reactive because he's too intense, and he is intense, sure, very, but in a reactive manner, the fire-starter is always someone else.
He's even soooo reactive as opposed to proactive, that sometimes he's even submissive. And he's OK with it, or too used to it, he feels somewhat comfortable taking that sub role, whether it is with Donna so she gets off his back, or with Michael, with EMP's EC, or with Claire, etc, he becomes a pushover or a bomb💣, no balance. But that's always as a reaction, it's not proactive, he reacts to stimuli in those 2 different ways as a default. He sometimes opposes it with all his might, in a very Carmy way, and becomes defensive, even aggressive:
Tumblr media
or he succumbs to it, which on the outside can even look like he's cooperating with it, but he's not, he's reacting in a submissive way, to avoid the alternative, which he deems "more inconvenient" at the time (defense mechanism), so he rather takes the submissive role in those cases.
Tumblr media
This, in his particular case, leads to bottled-up aggression and pain that come out in the most destructive and unhealthy ways, such as panic attacks, sleepwalking, workaholism, chain-smoking, anger fits in other situations that don't necessarily call for that, which he overreacts to, etc.
Tumblr media
All of this is a result of his upbringing and the fact that his caretaker and father figure were addicts, ofc. I have already mentioned that a long time ago, but in his case, it always bears repeating because it is the cause of his C-PTSD, which is basically what frames all of the aforementioned behaviors and dysfunctional habits. (I lightly touched this subject in one of my fics too). Not that he doesn't have other co-diagnoses that are part of his overall psychological makeup and also have an impact on his life, granted, but C-PTSD is by far the most comprehensive.
If you have time to read his monologue, I strongly suggest you do, JAW's acting is UNBELIEVABLE but reading it and re-reading it gives it a whole new dimension. Storer is my spirit animal. He wrote an ode to PTSD and in Carmy's case, it's the C subtype because it was not triggered by just one event, but by repetitive trauma. Here it is:
Tumblr media
My point is: Of course, he needs to address all of that, but even if he did, since the reactiveness is deeply rooted in him now, it's part of his very own personality, not just an acquired habit, he won't be able to change that, he will have to learn to cope and work with it, so it doesn't limit him anymore. We can all get treatment or change, but no one changes personalities. Ever.
He will have to learn to deal with it in healthier and more adaptative ways. There are multiple ways to do that and go about it, therapy is just one of them, but not the only one. The great news is that it can definitely be done if there's a will, but it's important to point out that it will not disappear, as that reactiveness is in his nature at this point. Because it started in his formative years, very early childhood, etc. It will be expressed differently, he will have more control over it, and it may shift its form to a point where he could even use it as one of his strengths, but it will never magically or clinically go away. Full stop. It's important to have realistic expectations to avoid unnecessary frustration and to be happier with a result that even exceeds our expectations if it eventually comes to it. Like I wish it did for Carmy, by the end of the series.
Now, let's call it what it is: He will never be the "proactive Carmy", functional hero, fully together male-lead that some envision he becomes for Syd and because of her.
That's not in his nature.
Realistically speaking, not to mention Storer-friendly speaking, he can improve, sure! And he will and I'm positive about that, as I mentioned here and here, she will have a crucial role in that evolution because Sydney is the plot twist, he is the plot. But Carmy will not become someone else.
He is and will always be Carmen Anthony Berzatto, The Bear, with all the light and shadow aspects that entails.
Tumblr media
And quite frankly, I love that, chefs because we are all a work in progress, just like him.

I love how this is the problems the EC fandom has
Tumblr media
Do we have drama? No
Can we figure out the heights of the band? Also no because they’re too busy being horny for each other
HAHAHA RIGHT?
I’m looking at Bad Omens’ fandom and others and I’m like… we are busy trying to find this.
The other biggest drama would be people not agreeing on ships / whos dom whos sub… but in the end we agree they’re all messing each others 😌

On the doorstep of Alex's dorm room is a box, with his name on it! Inside the envelope is a letter, reading as follows; "Dear Alex, I heard that something called Valentine's Day is coming up, and on that day, you give chocolates to people you think are nice! And I think you're pretty nice! So I wanted to give you these chocolates. I made them myself! With Mr. Saguaro's help, of course. I hope you like them! Sincerely, Wynona."

*cue Alex having to ask around for several days to figure this out*
hint: she was in the same home ec class slot prior to the treasure hunt opening lol
honestly i did not expect this horrible, grumpy teen to get any sort of gift, let alone a valentines gift, so i might just open up a pseudo art trade of sorts? :'D for those so inclined, all pics of your oc(s) handing over a gift to either max or alex, subbed to this blog by the 15th will get a return pic on white day (mar. 14) of the appropriate boyo giving back ~<3

”i mean i definitely get that hayes brings a vet presence i just need becky to really work on her lineups and figure out who fits in with who. because whenever kate was the first one off the bench subbing in for AC, they all played soooo well together. i just need her to figure out her sweet spots ig”
that’s what I’m saying. The players expecting KM, and they get Hayes. Having Hayes, KP and JY is not a good mix because they’re all going to try and score first instead of looking to A’ja first. Those 3 together on the court or 2-3 of them on the court look off open players so many times it’s annoying AF. A good combo was: AW, KP, AC, KS, KM or AW, KP, JY, KM, AC. Please tell me why the bench today the last few mins had better ball movement than the starters? (EC, KM, SC) were moving the ball well together. And my theory has been proven right that when Kate is open and she asks for the ball, she will make that shot.
BRO IK. when becky put the bench in they played kinda better than the team had been playing all game. the ball movement was there and they got their shots. i was sitting there like where was this when we needed it 😭

In the article above, British horror, EC Comics, DC Comics horror, splatter-punk and Unknown Worlds are mentioned. What do you think the other horror sub genres/influences are in the Preludes and Nocturnes arc?
Second question: About the tv version of Preludes and Nocturnes, do you not mind or were you disappointed in the lack of horror elements in that adaptation? When I read P&N, the most memorable things were how Ruthven Sykes dies and whatever happened to Rachel's dad. I like the shock factor of those scenes and more importantly a sense of unease. I just think horror has more impact when you feel something other than scared or freaked out.
Edit: I put some extra info in the reblogs…
Hey, thanks for the ask!
I don’t know what article you’re referring to since that didn’t come through or hasn’t been attached? You can link it again in the comments if you like.
I’m generally not a horror fan, so I’m probably not the right person to dive deeply into horror sub-genres. While especially Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll’s House have some horror elements, I’ve personally always seen The Sandman as (dark) fantasy.
So no, I personally wasn’t disappointed by the lack of horror elements in the series because I never thought it the main genre anyway. And I think that might have also been exactly the reason why Sam Kieth dropped out?
In any case, I definitely think the visceral element of horror has a purpose that goes beyond “shock factor” though, so I understand if people who read the comics first and liked the tone of especially the earlier issues felt it was missing. I guess it’s very personal.
For me, it’s always been the other way round: While Preludes & Nocturnes sets up the story, it was always one of my least favourite arcs because to me, it felt a bit like Neil was trying to find his feet, and stylistically, I always thought it was a bit “neither here nor there”. I love the later arcs most (Brief Lives, The Wake and TKO in that order) because I feel the storytelling is tighter and has more depth, but that’s of course just my personal preference.
I also wasn’t big on the shoehorned DC references, so I was glad we didn’t need to suffer them in the series if I’m honest 🤣
Not sure if that answers your questions at all, but as I said, I freely admit I’m not a massive horror fan.

❤️ Happy WorldBuilding Wednesday! ❤️
What are your cities or towns like? Feel free to talk about the layouts or the people or the architecture, etc. and to talk about more than one if you'd like!
My last neglected WBW to finish! Though I hope that I will get more questions soon. I will talk about one specific city.
Chibal: The City of Secrets, Merchants, and Magic
Tumblr media
Description/Stats/Fun Facts
The Kishic city-state of Chibal sits on the western coast of Kishetal. The city itself is built on a large hill overlooking the Green Sea.
Chibal is the second most populous Kishic city with a population of roughly 120,000 compared to the largest city, Labisa with 188,000. Despite having a smaller population Chibal is the most economically prosperous city, due in part to its trading port which is the biggest in the eastern Green Sea, a rich and famed history of salt production, access to both copper and silver deposits, and perhaps most infamously, The Hall of Oaths (which will be explained further below).
As of the start of The Testaments of the Green Sea has the highest per-capita population of sages (Magic users) of any Kishic city-state, 36. Most sages live as scholars or priests. It has been described as the center of Kishic scholarship and magic.
It should be noted that while Chibal may have the highest population of sages, the quality of these sages is often lackluster as they typically have little practical experience when it comes to sagecraft.
The patron deity of the city is Jalkiba the Shipwrecker, one of several Kishic sea deities.
Chibal has the largest slave market in Kishetal.
The elite of Chibal consume as much foreign wine as nearly the rest of the Kishetal combined. Beer, popular in the plains and mountains is rarely consumed.
The Chibalans speak the Coastal Dialect of Kishic which is noteworthy for its Ikopeshi elements.
Chibal has the largest Ikopeshi and subsequently forestfolk (various magically altered races, typically but not always descended from humans) of any Kishic city-state though it does not have the highest ratio of forestfolk to non-forestfolk.
Chibal can be separated into 4 primary districts. The markets and the docks, the temple distract and the Palace/Bidanlum, the eastern slope (where the majority of homes lie), and the salt beds (the poorest district and as the name suggests where the famed Chibalan salt is produced.)
While Chibal does have a small city guard, it is similar to several Kishic cities in that it has no standing army. It is unique however in that it additionally has no system to call up a force from its own citizenry. Chibal is almost entirely reliant on diplomacy, bribery, coherision, and economic tension to achieve its aims. The city, and in particular its leaders do make heavy use of foreign mercenaries and pirates, particularly those of Korithian and Ikopeshi decent. It can be argued that these form a private army of sorts.
Chibal has not been to war in 200 years.
History
The city was founded shortly after the settlement and conquest of Western Kishetal by the Spiritblooded warrior, Tamel roughly 1,400 years ago. Legend says that the cove which now holds the city's famed port was once home to a deadly sea beast, the exact nature of which varies from author to author, which was subsequently slain by Tamel.
How true this story is, is unclear. It is certain that something or someone(s) was inhabitating the cove before the arrival of the Kishics. Though it is just as likely that this was a sub-aquatic or else coastal race of magically-altered people (Foresfolk) rathef than a monster or spirit.
While initially part of the Kishic Empire under the 500 year reign Tamel, Chibal would be amongst the first of the of the Kishic cities to declare independece after the death of Tamel and the subsequent war against and destruction of the island kingdom of Arkodai.
The first king of Chibal, Adikar participated minimally in the civil wars preceding the end of the empire and chose instead to expand economically, creating the Palace of a Thousand Stone Trees, the original name for the grand palatial complex.
The line of Adikar itself would end 300 years later after his descedant, also named Adikar, vanished along with an entire fleet of ships while on an expedition. In the subsequent chaos, a group of powerful merchants, calling themselves the Bidani, named for their leader Bidan, seized control. Subsequently Chibal became an Aristocratic Oligarchy, controlled by a council of powerful merchants, elected and nominated by the council.
Along with claiming ownership of the Palace (renamed Bidanlum or Home of the Bidani), the Bidani would begin the construction of a massive library.
This library, The Hall of Oaths is the largest collection of tablets, scrolls, books, and artifacts in the Green Sea. Also called the Hall of Secrets, the hall is infamous for the secrets which it carries, secrets which have historically allowed the Bidani to hold conciderable power over much of Kishetal.

we've decided that in the pnp universe the ec-discuss slang for when you're getting your ass kicked by a monster and need backup is "getting rushburgered" (short for "this thing is turning me into rushburgers"). usage example: the email subject line "rushburgered outside goodale eom" (with a blank email body)
("rushburgers" are extremely cheap hamburgers purchased en masse for rush and cooked on the grills in the ec courtyard; the standard signal that rushburger production has commenced is an email titled "grills r hot eom")
(in real life there is a tetazoo sub-mailing list, fog (at) mit (dot) edu, short for "frozen outside goodale" -- you're cold, you've forgotten your id somewhere, and you need someone to let you in. often around the end of the semester the list receives a few misdirected emails intended for foge (at) mit (dot) edu, a professor who studies urban planning.)

I understand that you have spoken at length about Belos's stature as a villain in your post about backstories, but I do have to ask you to elaborate further on something.
What exactly is there about Belos that makes you find him boring? I'll be frank, I got the (probably wrong) impression that it's because he's not present much and not extravagantly emotional. Besides the numerous issues with his backstory that you've already discussed in depth, I feel like the latter is really subjective - there are plenty of villains who work well, even if their strength is purely one of narrative roles and not one of characterization, while remaining rather emotionally subdued. For all his faults, I personally think that the show delved into Belos's exact shade of black well (besides Elsewhere and Elsewhen, I guess) and that it works fine for the story and his interactions with characters such as Hunter and Luz.
This probably warrants a separate discussion on whether one-dimensional villains, main or secondary, can be considered "good" or "done well", but that's not the point of this ask.
(P.S. I really don't like the fact that the show reused the half-digested palisman amalgamate from Hollow Mind to make it just Belos's monster form. The scene in King's Tide where he briefly gets his human face back on to guilt-trip Hunter is pretty much the one time it actually clicks, so to speak)
So… I do feel bad that I've commonly acted like my stance on Belos being a boring/bad villain is a stance by default when it's reasonable to question it. Hell, his first is appearance is GREAT, with tons of menace, potential but also this push and pull with how the Isles is. Is he wrong in his commitment to his ideals if he truly is hearing the Titan and only desires unity?
The problem is that this doesn't amount to anything. One of the strengths to absentee villains like Belos is feeling their hand on things. Feeling the strength of their ideals or the cunning of their plans when it's revealed that they were behind what was going on. Belos' grand statements in the S1 finale very so much feel like this…
And then in S2, the literal only time before Hollow Mind where we feel his "GRAND MACHINATIONS!" is in the first episode with the fact that the boat is owned by the Emperor's Coven. It feels like Hunter sub-contracting his job admittedly but that's not the biggest issue in the world or anything. It gets the job done and he was watching things to make sure it happened.
But otherwise you don't feel Belos in the world or in the plot. Eda's Requiem theoretically but it's like the ONE time in S2 before Hollow Mind where people remember wild witches are, you know, illegal. Which isn't new and this still isn't as dramatic as the S1 finale. The focus is much more on Eda and Raine and Eda's personal drama than it actually is about the rebellion against Belos. It's technically an action against him but one with no lasting consequences except for Raeda angst.
It's also one of the only two times the cast actually confronts the coven heads who should be picking up the slack for Belos by showing who his generals are, that's one way to make up for an absentee villain, but they pretty much all fall into the categories of queer coded or at least entertainingly villainous or both. At least for the ones who can talk. Their lack of presence only reinforces Belos' lack of presence. Kikimora has more of a presence is almost never taken seriously in S2 which paradoxically makes Belos seem less imposing or impressive. This is right hand minion?
Same goes for Hunter honestly. If Hunter is his home grown prodigy, the fact that he constantly gets belittled or his ass kicked really doesn't make you fear Belos. In fact, the entirety of the EC has this problem because they appear to be so incompetent and unlikable but they don't reflect well on him.
It also makes his machinations feel… pointless and far too easily achieved. Which they mostly are. Darius literally takes Belos' place in motivation for Hunter in Sport in a Storm, he is so easy to replace manipulation wise. His manipulations of Luz require Lilith and Luz to abandon their character pasts (serious, head of the EC and Eda's apprentice and they still don't question a con artist for more than half a second) and Luz's personal guilt trip about helping Belos is arguably the worst creative choice in the entire series. It's presented really well, it's probably Belos' best scene but… It still isn't good narratively. His best manipulation is of Lilith and the series goes out of its way to mock Lilith for the fact that she's easily manipulated and bad at her job so I can't really give him credit for that.
And I think that's the core of why I say Belos is boring. He's functional, he does his job as a villain but he is also deeply frustrating because so much of what he does just flatly works. And what do we get in return for that? Hunter whining? Lilith and Eda losing their magic, which is never properly explored with Eda and only somewhat explored with Lilith, and Luz at her absolute most unlikable and the writers having no idea how to actually handle that without EXTREME unintended consequences. The worst offender is getting the Day of Unity in return for just having to believe the plan the CATS make fail because BELOS KNOWS ALL. Yeah that's… That's real interesting. Totally makes me want to see more of this brilliant mastermind.
It's like the fight scenes in the series. Because no one's power level is actually consistent, you end up recognizing it's more for the narrative and you disconnect. If they're losing, it's only because the writer needs them to lose. If they're winning, it's because the conflict is effectively over. Spectacle can at least make this enjoyable but…
There's no spectacle with Belos. Despite being religiously motivated and an extremely hateful man, we never get thunderous, preaching monologue from him. We never get him smiting someone in righteous fury. He never feels like he enjoys this or even really cares that deeply about it. It feels like he's just going through the motions most of the time.
But then you get rare moments like him killing Flapjack and saying he doesn't care about them… Contrasted by him leaving and going "I'm doing this for your souls" potentially as why he doesn't kill all of them right there and then when he's been winning. Not only that, but he shouldn't care about any of these sinners' souls and it's delivered incredibly flatly.
Yes, historically the people who have used religion for the sake of war are hardly actually pious but we never even get an exploration of that. We never have an exploration of anything to do with Belos besides him being flatly evil.
And if you're one note, your one note better be what sets off a chorus of noise. Joker is commonly one note in how evil he is but how people react to him and how insane and fun his plots are are why people remember him. How fun he is himself is why people remember him. Why people get excited once they know a story has the Joker in it.
And I'm just never excited by Belos. Bare minimum, not in hindsight. Much like the rest of the show, when he doesn't have to prove his statements, he can sound impressive and interesting. In execution though, he has no follow through. No presence. No joy. Little dread commonly even.
And admittedly a lot of me disliking his appearances before Elsewhere Elsewhen is hindsight. Even when what he is saying isn't explicitly a lie coming out of an asshole, they now feel disingenuous because we now know that his regime is a lie, his beliefs are a lie and that he just has a tendency to be an asshole. Betraying Lilith isn't keeping to grander schemes, it's just a dumb witch as a pawn in his game of genocide with none of the fun that say, Andrias has with when he's reveling in being evil.
Honestly, the more I think about it… The main reason Belos is ever good goes to having a strong design, animation and a good voice actor. If either of those dropped the ball at all, he'd be lacking a lot of the menace and dread he ever has. Menace and dread that can't beat out what my mind tells me he actually is once we've met Phillip. It's not like manipulations are any special after all. "Luz, I'm not trying to murder your entire world." "Child I've groomed to want my approval, here is how you gain my approval." "Woman who's sister is dying, here is what you must do for me to save your sister."
None of these are hard sells. None of these are impressive. His most impressive is tricking people who were already looking for him, and for what he was looking for, and telling them "Yep, I know where this is, come with me," and that's only impressive because it takes Luz and Lilith ignoring the fact that these two mercenaries are talking about Philip having done something awful to their friend and a palisman which neither bring up. Otherwise… Belos never convinces someone to do something when their goals don't align. He doesn't even succeed against Luz because Luz blows up the briefcase after he uses overwhelming power and leverage against her.
He is functional. Just like the magic of TOH. And like the magic, it can look nice, even impressive sometimes, but it's not something to look forward to be interested because it's just going to do the job required of it in the moment.
And that's a really shit place for your main villain to be in but I've spent like three blogs in the past week just talking about how much Belos' role in S3 is almost purely of genre structure. That. Sucks. (also, sorry for not getting to his monstrous form. I agree it's bad, and it's bad for a LOT of reasons, yours partially included, just that this blog is long and rambly enough as is). ==========
