"And I win, again!" Crystal explained proudly, as the puck landed inside the goal, solidifying the princess of as the victor. You groaned. "You have one every game, Crystal. Can't you give me a little break? Just one?" You pleaded, skating over to the stairs that led to the thrones and taking a seat.

Crystal laughed, and took her place in front of you, nudging your foot with her hockey stick. "C'mon, don't be a sore loser, [Name.]" She smiled. "I've played this game my entire life, I'm the Ice princess, I'm going to be good at ice hockey you know." The girl rolled her eyes playfully, before grabbing you by your arm and hoisting you back up.

"But, you're still my boyfriend, so I guess I could go a little easy on you.” Crystal led you both back out into the middle of the rink, placing the puck between you two. Her face a mix of determination and playfulness. “Beginners luck, right?” Crystal teases, getting into position, while you mutter beneath your breath. “Am I even a beginner after losing three games?” Crystal hears you. “We’ll see after this.”

epic winter literally would've made so much more sense if the snow queen never got a husband & instead continued drifting absentmindedly around the kingdom. eventually realizing she had to pick an heir she grabbed a random ice pixie named crystal that she decided to make her daughter by adopting her & then doting on her excessively before completely disappearing & leaving crystal in charge. the reason jackie hates her is because it could've been any of them. why was it crystal? why her? why not jackie? crystal meanwhile has never experienced parental love before & becomes completely dependent on making her mother proud of her & gradually growing more bitter about her absence & eventually deciding to steal the four roses etc etc in order to get her attention. this is basically my epic winter rewrite idea

the writing choices in between the earlier specials (true hearts day, thronecoming) and the latter ones (dragon games, epic winter) kind of felt insulting to be honest. and i'm not talking about apple. her going back on her word on not making raven to follow her destiny is an example (to me) of regression and not an erasure of her character journey. people, teenagers especially, are not perfect creatures and sometimes we commit mistakes even though we swore not to make them again. growth isn't a linear line. what gets me are the character assassinations (daring) and heavily underdeveloped characters shoehorned into the spotlight (crystal). daring's story could've been fine in epic winter IF the last few seasons didn't just show us a more nuanced and believable portayal of his character. crystal's story could've been fine IF she was just a side character and not made to be the main protagonist of an entire movie that requires a well-written character which she wasn't. i know this show is aimed for kids but it's kind of demeaning to think that kids won't be able to spot bad writing.

Can we talk about how, aside from being out of nowhere, this musical number basically exists to establish couples?

Blondie, being the odd one out of course, the others are the existing couple of Ashlynn & Hunter then the one this special is setting up, Daring & Roseabella

Which leaves us with the first to we see, Faybelle & Briar. Given that this is the same crew who just had the "CPR" scene between Darling & Apple in the last special, you can't tell me this scene wasn't planting the seeds of Briarbelle.

Especially when they look like this!

And you're gonna tell me that Faybelle "I want to be the next Dark Fairy" Thorn having a dream about throwing her destiny away to save the very girl she's supposed to curse doesn't MEAN anything?!

I mean the scene before the dream sequence had Faybelle horrified at the idea that Briar might have actually touched the spindle when she was teasing her about it. You'd THINK she'd be happy since that's their destiny and all! But, nope, she was legit worried for Briar. But still had to play it cool to keep her "evil rep".

Then there's the fact that the outfits they're wear were created by Faybelle & as someone here pointed out that the crystals on Briar's tiara match the look of Faybelle's wings here. I don't think that was coincidental either in or out of the story.

So while Daring & Roseabella were definitely the main focus couple of Epic Winter, I fully believe the creative team snuck in Briar & Faybelle as well.

And I salute them for it!
