look back challenge, day 3: a toy you love, but rarely, if ever, photograph.

in dnd, i'm much more a dungeon master than a player. i did, however, have a blast playing sed. we rolled random story/personality/appearance traits, and i kept getting things that went in a completely different direction from what i would have picked. there was no need to actually keep the randomly rolled character, but i decided to embrace him and his Extremely Special Guy story arc i would never have written on my own. he became one of my favorite ocs, and i made two dolls of his different forms. the base is monster high neighthan rot, whose face sculpt fits sed ridiculously well.

the last picture is the various things i made for playing him. the book and the bag are dice containers, but also items he owned in-game.

1: In Ruins (Final Fantasy IX)

He didn't have long left. He knew that-- it'd been at the forefront of his thoughts for a while now, thanks to Garland, and yet...

2: The View From The Farm (Stardew Valley)

Not a lot of thought went into the veg that started appearing in the kitchen. There was nothing new about that-- the kitchen was usually at least partly stocked with fresh food, but it was hard to miss the fine layer of dirt on everything as the basket holding it all sat on the counter, filling the air with the smell of wet earth. Abby's dad sold veg but they were never that fresh, and with a cup of coffee in hand it didn't cross his mind again until the next basket turned up the following week.

3: We've Done Worse (Stardew Valley)

Watching the dice roll and bounce against his screen Sebastian soon had his head held miserably in his hand. "Another fail?" "Another fail," he sighed in response to Sam, rolling for damage instead. They weren't even at the final boss of the dungeon-- this was boss two out of five, if he remembered correctly, and things were not going great for them. Abigail was at death's door and his own character was down to his last two spells: Sam was doing great, considering the situation, but it didn't help them much right now.

4: Aftertales (Tales of Symphonia but like 10+ years old by now...)

Luin, named after its constant resolve to be rebuilt after any great disaster, was always a fairly prosperous town. Because of its proximity to the once popular Tower of Mana attracted a lot of tourist attention, and being built across Lake Sinoa helped bring in trade as a fish market. The people were pleasant, the views were breathtaking, and there was usually a warm welcome there for anyone who happened across it.

5: The Runaway Princess (og fic)

Nothing much changed when she ran away. She didn't know what she expected, but a bounty and eventual 'Missing: Presumed Dead' announcement wasn't it, though the disappointment faded over the years. All political agendas failed to bother her after some time, a gentle easement for her soul as she relaxed into the woodlands, letting the roots and the leaves dig deep until she didn't feel at home unless she was there.

6: 3Kingdoms - Journey's End (og fic based in Aftertales)

Lilla always saw Keet as a wanderer. They met so often in strange places, each one so far apart from the last, and he always looked so at home wherever he was. It's what he'd done for centuries and she didn't expect him to do anything differently now that his immortality was gone, so his offer to return with her to Mirgyscar was a nice surprise.

7. Everlongs - One Dark Night... (og fic)

For the past few days his behaviour had seemed… off. They'd been travelling for maybe three months now, give or take a few days, trying to find out what they could about the strange doll and whoever had sent it. And it felt like they'd made great headway recently as they started veering back into Welsh territory, coming back towards the old house Layton visited back when they'd first met. But then one night she woke up in the middle of the night to an empty bed.

8. The Runaway Princess - I Saw Your Eyes Light Up

Glesni's excitement was a big part of why she changed her mind. With the knowledge that 'Princess Cerdiwen' was alive and actively helping Tilwyth's heir spreading through all the guests like weeds she knew she had to get control of the narrative, make sure no one had the wrong idea, but the only way to do that was to go out amongst them. But not as Ceridwen. That would never happen: for all intents and purposes the Princess was dead and absolutely not coming back, but she wasn't the one that'd helped Kane and Alister for the past six month. That was all on Awen, and she was dead set on making sure that was well known.

9. 3Kingdoms - Keet's Operation

She did as he'd asked and told Annik at the end of the day she wouldn't be taking any clients while he was in surgery, and was woken up the next morning by a shake to the shoulder, a large pot of coffee and some breakfast. He felt unusually keen, unable to sit still for more than five minutes and pacing back and forth, checking constantly through the window out at the darkened street. She didn't take him as the nervous sort but this didn't feel like it was about the operation, and when she asked what was bothering him he'd dismiss her with a weak smile and a shake of his head, mumbling something about the approaching storm.

10. 3Kingdoms - Steluta's Operation

Rhosoare kept Stluta company day and night, and with no way to help beyond a little advice on MET-limbs Lilla found herself at a loose end very quickly, sitting outside the recovery room more often than inside and getting more and more frustrated. The first little walk she took to calm her nerves didn't help much: she spent every step feeling nauseated with shame for leaving Luta, until she arrived back and realised that no one even noticed she'd left. A gentle knock on the door and Rhosoare answered and asked if everything was alright, mentioning that Steluta was still asleep for now, before closing the door again when there was nothing more to share. After that Lilla was gone a little longer, and by the third day she was out in the city proper, completely disconnected from everything happening back at the clinic.

Should I write more fanfic? Probably. Will I? Lol idk 🤷‍♂️

Aside from the obvious LnDS one, Dungeons and Dragons takes a big chunk of my life (I play in two games during the week and run one game on Saturday nights), so I'm definitely your ~classic nerd~. Other obsessions are invert keeping (I have a pet tarantula collection), and Demon Slayer (I'm soooooo excited for the next season!! Cairn is the single best simple ttrpg out there, at least for those of us that like dungeon crawling and monster hunting like doll. its not even close, Cairn is just so simple and streamlined. of course it does this by off putting a lot of design work on the GM through arbitration, however, every single simple game requires this.

ofc, HMTW is just such a good game in general and makes such good use of the tarot that its utterly impressive. of course, how do you translate HMTW's use of hands of cards and face down cards into a game with dice? its a hard task

Happy Critmas 2024 Everyone!

I guess is it really Critmas, if there's no game...eh, the first Critmas was imaginary (that was sort of the point, I started this in 2020 BECAUSE I missed playing with my friends, so I started making game supplies for my dolls so they could play). Usually I set this post to air the day of my Critmas game, but since it's not happening I picked a date; and I noticed that over the last 3 years (since '20 was a daily advent) the day had been going down by one, I figured today would be the perfect date. (Maybe next year it will be the 16th lol)

And now, the biggest project I came up with year, and am most proud of the execution of; 1:6 scaled boxes of TCG Cards. That's right, your dolls can collect TCG boxes and do pack openings now. (I mean, mine have a game and hobby store, of course they'd need boxes of cards). Each box type has a sealed version, an opened version, and packs to go in said open box. Sealed box is fairly simple, just construct a box. Opened, you construct a box without a top and put the top flap (that is separate) in as well as make an insert by wrapping the cover with several pack pictures on it, onto an insert of foam board or stacked paperboard (template included) so the box will look filled. But there's also loose backs, that are made by folding the pack in half over a tiny rectangle (to be the cards inside) and then you can fill your open box with the loose packs too. The are fun, they are tiny (and very easy to loose ^^; ) I also laminate all parts with packing tape before cutting to five the shiny box look, but that's up to you. Each sheet has 2 boxes on them for maximized variety.

i just realized that i actually dont know what the general consensus is with most tov minigames besides some form of contempt?(?) dislike(?) from repede snowboarding

so actually im kinda curious to hear what others think if anyone wants to weigh in on this post!

im going to try to recount all options for minigames, but please let me know if i forgot anything. anyway off the top of my head there are:

-the two dice games at the one vendor in capua nor

-resraurant serving

-the water cactus thing that you do exactly once

-warehouse sidequest should probably count even if you cannot play again once its complete

-dragon races

-repede snowboarding

-super chill (cold) rhythm game that you Also play exactly once

-nam cobanda poker

my opinions on how i feel about the minigames are under the cut:

-dice: i forgot that there were two options of games until i started typing the post lol. its extremely chance-based and in reality the only reason one would bother to spend time on it is to get a title for rita (doesnt even have a coatume with it!) personally is like a D or maybe even F tier

-restaurant serving: may be considered extremely tedious the harder the difficulties go. i know i got overwhelmed by it until i realized i could cheese it by writing down all the orders on paper because the dialogue bubbles only change if you press them. i think that aspect saves the minigame from being the worst. ultimately its funny because of how absurd orders can get but i can understand why people wouldnt be happy to play it. Personally, its B tier. at least you can get costumes out of them

-water cactus: this is a one-time game during the story so its hard to evaluate it. i think in concept its extremely interesting as its a brief moment to force the player into a rhythm to get through desier by making them manage the water in the party's canteens. its a shame it doesnt remain once you reach yormgen but i understand the choice behind it not being permament: if someone needs to fight gigantes or find materials in the dungeon, needing to manage the water at the same time could make the process less fun. C tier for interesting concept and wondering if it could have been possible to adapt this in a more fully-fledged minigame

-warehouse sidequest: in theory very fun, but its definitely not for me. i have to admit, i resorted to using videos to help me do them in the past, but i should try doing them by myself the next time i get the sidequest. the quest itself is cute and you get a really nice costume for karol. i think its pretty good especially because you dont need to do it all at once and hence take it at your own pace as opposed to brute-forcing it all like you can in the waiter minigame. high C/low B until further notice

-dragon races: now HERES a very fun and interesting mini game (imo!) the premise of it kind of expects you to have a good grasp of the world map, but it starts out easy enough to be doable with practice. its one of the minigames that feel worth coming back to because of the fact it 1) doesnt take too long 2) isnt convoluted in a way where you constantly need to write/pause/think. you just fly! plus you can get a very nice outfit for judy off of it. A tier, no doubt. the only reason it isnt S is that its not my absolute fave. im biased. however its still one of the best minigames the game has to offer

-repede snowboarding: hi. i love repede snowboarding. so much so that my sibling had me clear the courses on their save file of vesperia. i think admittedly the controls are a little bit janky, but at the same time, its because you arent expected to hold only to accelerate all the time. its a balancing act that requires some patience to manage. the reality is that there are two maps but with different weather conditions that change how hard the course plays. i ultimately enjoy playing it especially with the challenge of beating it under a certain time limit. using the overdrive dolls here as a means to get costumes for everybody is genius too. for me, this is S tier uncontested

-rhythm minigame: its another one that appears for exactly once and never again. in reality, the game could have made it happen 4 times in total and it wouldnt have been as confusing for why its even in there. i assume that by the time they were making it that the team was pressed for time and was unable to incorporate it the other 3 (possible) instances. i think its got a lot of potential but as it is right now it just awkwardly exists. honestly i feel bad for sticking it in C tier. but i also think i would have had put it into D had it not been my love for estelle. it certainly has more going for it compared to DICE

-poker minigame: HERE IT IS. the means of getting chips for nam cobanda. this is a very simple variation of poker, but in my opiniom, an engaging one. i think it says a lot that its possible to get sucked into playing it a while. its pretty straightforward and i think its actually the one minigame with most replay value because of the fact theres a chips vendor, whereas your incentive to do the other games are titles/costumes and those are finite. and while this is also somewhat chance-based like the dice, its less of a "guess randomly" and more of a "trying to predict the pattern and possible cards". S tier

"I probably need glasses," she quipped back with a grin, knowing that her vision had always sucked but it had only gotten worse as she had gotten older. "Honestly I'm probably just going to stick to being in denial and letting these situations happen over and over again," she added with a laugh. "Sorry if I scared you," she smiled, "I have a tendency to be theatrical with my reactions"
