Chaos Emeralds are important holy items in the Soleannan religion.

Princess Elise wears the blue Chaos Emerald around her neck as a lucky charm.

The Duke of Soleanna is in possession of a Chaos Emerald during the Solaris Project, and a Chaos Emerald must be used in tandem with the Scepter of Darkness or a "royal soul" to seal away Mephiles or Iblis respectively.

A Chaos Emerald is "supposed" to be within the ancient ruins of Dusty Desert.

It is known that for Mephiles and Iblis to reform, a Chaos Emerald is required.

And lastly, Princess Elise has an apparent connection to the Chaos Emeralds, with Silver explaining that this connection is due to her having been the vessel used to seal away Iblis.

The Chaos Emeralds are central to several wholly distinct religions in the Sonic Universe, including but not limited to several Echidna clans, an unnamed ancient civilization on West Side Island (which had allegedly gone to war over the emeralds, causing "the gods" to intervene and disperse them), the Babylonians, the Black Arms, and followers of the Gaia Manuscripts.

As Sonic Frontiers demonstrated, the Chaos Emeralds are not of Earth, and were rather drawn to the planet ages ago due to the pull of the Master Emerald. The Chaos Emeralds are shown to appear wherever needed (and Blaze directly theorizes such in the Rush series) which could explain how so many distinct groups came to claim them as their own holy items.

Elise & the Duke

Elise's relationship with her father isn't discussed very much. I think it's actually one of the most interesting aspects about 06.

In a flashback, he's shown telling a young Elise "Don't cry" and "Become a strong queen who doesn't cry no matter what happens" in response to her grieving over her mother's death, which is...not great. A child should be allowed to grieve over their deceased parent. Although the Duke means well and says this because he genuinely believes strong leaders never cry (which is far from the truth), that doesn't make what he's doing okay. It doesn't matter that he's saying it in a soft and gentle tone, either. To a child, it's likely gonna seem like a dismissal of their feelings (which it is). This also shows that he was telling Elise to never cry before he used her as a vessel to seal Iblis.

Another thing I find interesting is that Elise says "I understand everything my parents said to me now." It could imply that Elise's mother held the same sentiment as the Duke, but we don't know for sure.

Now, onto the Solaris Project. Some time before the project began, the Duke told Elise that Solaris' power would allow them to travel through time and rectify past mistakes. The main reason the Duke began the project was so Elise could see her late mother again. Once again, good intentions, but the Duke experimenting with supernatural forces beyond his understanding cost him his life and hurt many people, perhaps his daughter most of all.

So long story short, the project goes wrong and the Duke is fatally wounded in an explosion but shortly before his death, he sealed the Flames of Disaster in Elise and pretty much left her clean up his mess. She was cursed to never shed a single tear, had to rule an entire kingdom at a young age, is relentlessly pursued and kidnapped by a madman who wants to harness her power, and when she makes a single friend, he gets murdered right before her eyes by the creature that her father experimented on all those years ago. Elise is suffering the consequences for her father's actions.

And how does Elise feel about her father after all this? She still loves him deeply. She doesn't express any anger towards him or angst about the way he treated her, or that he inadvertently caused her suffering, even though she has every right to do so. You get the sense that she doesn't even realize her father's "love" was actually quite abusive, which is just really tragic. She's been conditioned to accept this as her role in life and you can see it in her behavior. At the start of the game, Elise lacks confidence, is unsure of what she can do in her situation, and even blames herself for the things that are happening. Her attitude gradually changes when she meets Sonic, who encourages her to be more proactive and truly enjoy life instead of being restricted by her role as a princess.

Yet people get on Elise's case for breaking down once at the tail end of the game over the fact that she'd lose the memories of her only friend and would be separated from him?

Elise doesn't mean what she said in this moment, and blows out Solaris' flame to save the world seconds later. She had to bottle up her emotions for a decade and now has to say goodbye to the person whom she grew to love over the course of their adventure. Her reaction here is more than justified.

judging by its super hidden placement in the actual game, the fact that the Duke's design is different to the one in the released game, how he looks more like the concept art for 06 (and Elise's design is slightly different too! her hair is different) PLUS the clear similarities in style between this and Elise's portrait they use to show Elise's role in Soleanna's government i'm willing to bet a LOT that this is from one of the previous versions of the story from 06.

since we know that sth2006's story got changed a LOT through its creation and the game went through the deepest pits of developmental hell, and they were changing things in the story until the upteenth hour, i think it's pretty safe to say this is most likely an asset that was created for a different story and they just decided to reutilize it. since we never get to explore the castle/Elise's balcony in the game there was no chance of regular players encountering this one item and in the one cutscene it DOES show up we only see Elise's side. not only is it super tiny but it also doesn't show the entire painting so unless you were looking for it, digging in the files, you most likely wouldn't find it

this is SO interesting!!! i take from this that in a previous version, the Duke was alive with Elise and they must've ruled Soleanna together .... oohhhh this is such an awesome find omg

The Children of Solaris Chapter 3: The Friend

Princess Elise the Third was not happy, why? Because her father was still working on that stupid energy project instead of spending time with her! His darling daughter and the heir to the throne of the entire Kingdom!

He had promised to spend today with her and ended up bringing the 10 year old with him to the lab, as she was the princess no one said anything to her. She went where she pleased, and that’s how it would be.

She sat in the break room reading a book as she waited for her father to return, “Elise!” He called, “I have someone I want you to meet” “Father!” She lowered her book and smiled as he entered the room followed by Iblis and Mephiles, the pair had grown a bit since they first came into existence. But neither ever developed the half of their face they missed, Mephiles eyes were a piercing acid green that glowed in the dark. And Iblis didn’t really seem to mind since he could get around fine usually with help from his brother.

Iblis wears gold inhibitor rings on his wrists and ankles, he also wore matching white gloves and dark gray boots with Mephiles.

The Duke had brought them to meet her to see how they would interact with someone who was young like them. Everyone in the lab was well over the age of twenty, so this was a miniature experiment in their behavior. They were stable and well behaved, extremely well behaved in Mephiles case, so the Duke knew they would not hurt her. The twins stared at Elise and she stared back with eyes wide in wonder, “Woah…you guys look cool!” She did a curtsey, “I am Princess Elise the third” Mephiles bowed, he was always the more polite of the pair, “It is an honor to meet you princess, I am Mephiles” He elbowed his brother who quickly bowed, “I’m Iblis and what he said” 

Elise leaned in closer to Iblis, “Woah what happened to your eyes?” Iblis pointed to Mephiles, “He has them” “Woah…your eyes are like emeralds” She said looking at Mephiles. “Emeralds?” “Yeah really pretty gems that are green like your eyes” Mephiles blinked, his eyes were…pretty? Elise tilted her head with a smile, “Wanna play?” “Play..?” The brothers asked, confused.

“Yeah! Do fun stuff together! Pleassssssssssse father?” Elise looked up at him with wide eyes and the Twins stared up at him. He could not say no to her, and who knows perhaps some play time would be good for the twins, to give them some enrichment after their training.

And with that the trio became fast friends, Elise would visit them as often as she could and hangout with them whenever their training was done. Playing tag (Iblis was too fast to catch), Hide and Seek (one game lasted three hours because Mephiles hid in Elise’s shadow), card games, board games, you name it they played it. The Twins became much happier with her in their lives, before it has just been one day of training after the next, but she made them feel alive, Elise treated them like fellow kids not weapons.

“Where is Elise?!”  Iblis whined once his training was over, “She hasn’t been here for two weeks!” Mephiles stood beside him stoic as ever but the longing could be seen in his eyes. One of the scientists looked over a note the Duke had left them in case the boys asked, “She’s just on vacation you two, she should be back tomorrow” “Ok…” with that they went off to their shared room, it was split down the middle, on the left side was Mephiles bed and a few books on a shelf. It was all neat and tidy, everything perfect in its place. Iblis had a bed and shelf too but it was a bit more messy, and on his shelf he also had various sketch books and drawing supplies. Many of his drawings were tapped to the wall. Iblis jumped up into his bed, his ears lowered, “Mm I miss her…” Mephiles nodded in agreement as he got into his own bed, “Same brother…mm she’s having fun out on the surface, and we are stuck here” Iblis whimpered then looked up at Mephiles, “Do…you think we’ll ever see it? The surface?” “Of course, we just…right now they want us to train and make sure we can survive up there” “I’m tired of training!” Iblis shouted, his fur flared out and the temperature of the room rose several degrees, “I’m tired of all the tests! Tired of all the lessons! I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I HATE IT!” 

Mephiles jumped into his bed as Iblis started to cry, “I know…I hate it too, one day we’ll get out of here brother, even if we have to break out” Iblis sniffed and looked up at him, “Promise?” “I Promise”
