NA Piña Colada !
(a.k.a. Piña Nolada, a.k.a. the Piña Co-nada)
1.5 oz. non-alcoholic rum
1.5 oz. creme of coconut
0.5–1 oz. lime juice (to taste)
2 oz. pineapple juice
If using pebble ice: Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with a handful of pebble ice, and “whip” to mix everything together. Dump contents into a festive glass and pack in as much more ice as will fit.
If using a blender: Add liquid ingredients and about six to eight oz. ice to a blender, and blend on high for about 10 seconds. Empty into a festive glass.
In both cases, garnish with pineapple leaves, an orange slice, and a little colorful umbrella, if you’ve got it.

my dry January. I have to treat today’s constant sneezing and sniffles. The best treatment is a healthy glass of good bourbon. I’ll start over with dry January tomorrow!

10 Tools For Getting Sober:
1) Change your mindset about alcohol from “can’t have” to “don’t want.”
2) The first 30 days are the toughest. Sign up to a 30-day course, such as the free 30-day Alcohol Experiment, write down your experience and start getting really curious about everything that’s happening.
3) Join Facebook groups, sober sub-reddits and other online or in person sober communities so you have support and accountability. Search out other sober people to befriend.
4) Arm yourself with alcohol-free alternative drinks. There are hundreds available and it’s great fun exploring it all.
5) Pour or give away your alcoholic drinks. You don’t want them in the house.
6) Avoid temptation. If you have any boozy nights out arranged for at least the first 30-60+ days, I’d suggest avoiding them because you might be tempted to drink. When you feel strong enough, carry on as normal.
7) Be passionate. Think about it like, I’m a sober rebel: I’m doing something amazing, I’m not feeling deprived.
8) Don’t worry too much if you slip – it can happen. Don’t beat yourself up. Learn from it, move on and try again.
9) Stay engaged as the weeks and months roll by. You’ll see loads of positive changes to your body, your mind and your life.
10) Find new things to do with your time. When you stop drinking, you might find you have a lot more time on your hands. You’ll also feel more motivated and enthusiastic to go and do stuff, and you want to fill the void. Instead of going to the pub every night, you now have the chance to join that gym you've had your eye on, or to learn how to cook your favourite dish.

Day 3 of Dry January - this is harder than I expected. Good thing I'm at my folks' place right now cause being around other people is helping me keep myself in check. My resolve is strong but the little voice trying to convince me to just have one drink is still ever-present. Ultimately I'm doing this for myself and I know that faltering only hurts me.
I assume this will get easier as the days go by, I just have to have conviction 👍🏻

Well, my husband lasted 5 days of dry January. Literally the first Friday and he gave up. He had a long day at work, and I said it sucked but this is a good chance to practice other de-stressing tactics instead of going right to alcohol. We went and got food for dinner, he went to play video games and then gave up.
He decided fuck dry January. It was his idea, I never asked him to do it but I agreed to do it with him. He has never made it through the month without drinking. At least last time he made it a few weeks in.
I'm partially annoyed because he can't even stick with 1 moderately difficult thing and also concerned bc who can't go 5 days without drinking? It's the FIRST weekend of January!!

Damp January ...?
You've noticed, no doubt, that "Dry January" - the challenge to abstain from alcohol for 31 days following the traditional over-indulgence of the holidays - is back in the news.
Feeling a touch fuzzy from our New Year's Eve celebration, I asked Sharon, "Should we give it a try?"
"OK," she replied. Then, after a pause, asked, "But what about the free drink we're supposed to get on the flight home Wednesday ...?"
(The illustration shows a sample of booze-related ornaments sold at Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland in Frankenmuth, Michigan. The store has a whole section devoted to liquid cheer.)

A drink is never decided by quality of the ingredients alone. Nor by the skill of the bartender, alone. The result itself is the only truth!
Suletta Smash | 0% ABV*  |  Smashes, Low/No Citrus, Low/Zero ABV/Mocktail, Long Drinks
In shaker, combine
3-5 torn basil leaves (mint also works if you can’t get basil)
1.33 fl oz or 40ml Tomato Shrub (see below)
4 fl oz or 120ml Calpico Original Flavor
.5 fl oz or 15ml Bay Leaf infused syrup
Shake together and doublestrain through fine mesh strainer to get the little bits of herb out. Strain into double old fashioned glass with large rock of ice.
For presentation, take a small amount of cheap, bright-red storebought grenadine and sink it down the side of the glass to get the ombre.
Top carefully with a small amount of seltzer. Then, pull a lemon twist over the top(discard this piece) and dash a float of Peychaud’s or other Creole-style bitters over top. You can cut the iconic ‘v’ garnish and place before or after doing this depending on what kind of visual effect you want -- clean, or a little splattered. A mix of Angostura and Peychaud’s also works well.
Tumblr media
*Note that while most bitters brands contain alcohol, the amount in a float is less than a teaspoon. it’s roughly as alcoholic as using vanilla extract in whipped cream is in the grand scheme of things. However, you can also use 0% ABV brands that use a different base for their suspensions like Fee Brothers, who I believe makes a Creole-style bitter. I’m not sure how it compares colorwise to Peychaud’s though.
Tomato Shrub recipe: Macerate equal amounts of chopped-up tomato of choice and sugar for 12-24 hours, then strain out solids. Per every cup(8 fl oz) of liquid you get, use about 2/3rds cup(5.3 fl oz) white balsamic or champagne vinegar. Bottle and store in fridge. This will last a pretty long time if you don’t open it frequently. I made this batch in August, opened it only a once or twice and it’s’ doing peachy in January. Well, tomato-y. Preserving fresh products in just such a manner as this is probably important in the colonies of Gundam & places like Asticassia!

New Year's resolutions...
...that never work:
Fly to the moon
Lose weight
Whine less
Eat a healthier diet
Learn an instrument or a language
Don't see everything through black glasses
Do more sport
Change your mind sometimes
Improve your work-life balance
Dry January.
...that could actually work:
Get up in the morning
Check in with your parents more often
Read more, surf less
Engage in pro bono work
Only smoke cigarettes with a filter
See things through rose-colored glasses sometimes
Drive less, cycle more
Be more open to new things
Eat more white meat and less red meat
Don't give up hope.
