7 recolors and one vaguely medievalish Default of the UNI drumkit

Some weeks ago somebody on the plumpbob keep discord asked for a medieval default of the UNI drumkit. I couldn't find one and didn't find medieval recolors either. I remembered it again today and tried my hand at it.

I made four wooden recolors of the shell and three simple recolors of the head using @poppet-sims empty head recolor as a base. Those are available as custom recolors and could work for modern games too.

Then I defaulted the drumset using my recolors and poppets empty head recolor. It works as medieval replacement in a pinch until somebody more talented than me makes better recolors.

I'm sure other people have probably added what I'm about to, but I've been making music for a hot second and have some fave things!

Virtual Instruments — LABS (spitfireaudio.com) LABS is one of the best free vsts out there with hundreds of instruments to choose from. Spitfire already makes great products, and LABS is just a FREE example of that. They also have what Can be free orchestral VST, BBC Symphony I think, that if you wait a bit and submit a form you can get it for free.

Pianobook PLEASE CHECK OUT PIANOBOOK!!! So many fantastic musicians and plugin makers contribute to this site. Even if you don't have Kontakt which is hella expensive, many makers offer things for the next best Decent Sampler which I'll link shortly. There are also SFZs and there are just a lot of fantastic sampled instruments on here that can be loaded into Decent Sampler and Sforzando. You will have to make an account though, but it's worth it. You can also help create demos for instruments.

Decent Sampler Plugin Decent Sampler is basically a free, musician-curated version of Kontakt that is way more accessible. It doesn't do all the things Kontakt does. If anyone has seen David Hilowitz and his channel, most of his finds end up on Decent Sampler and can be downloaded from the VST in your DAW.

sforzando (plogue.com) Sforzando is like, the go to SFZ file player. Most DAWs come with one, but most people get sforzando because it's just good. Plogue also has a bunch of other stuff: if you were ever a vocaloid fan, or vocal synth fan in general, you might remember Plogue for their vocal synths. I'm pretty sure they have two free ones.

Alter/Ego (plogue.com) Oh hey I found it, this is plogue's free vocal synth and it supports three free voices: Bones, Marie Orc, and apparently ALYS who I thought was paid (maybe she originally was).

ORCHESTRAL TOOLS Check out ORCHESTRAL TOOLS'S SINE player!!! It comes with a lot of free instruments including orchestral ensemble banks, though it takes some noodling to learn how to use the orchestral stuff because they're based on major and minor chords. They have a lot of other instruments and I think sometimes things become free for some time. Basically another Spitfire deal.

VSCO 2: Community Edition (CE) Want even more acoustic orchestral instruments sampled by musicians, for musicians? Check this out. I use this thing, so often. It comes with SFZ files, the raw WAVs, I think there might be a plugin version. Please, it's pretty high quality.

DSK Music DSK is an OG, been around for a long time. They offer SO many instruments, including non-western ones that sound pretty decent for being free. Just go through and browse.

I , too, seriously suggest Cymatics, and if you sign up for text or email stuff, sometimes they give out REALLY great deals and codes: I've gotten a free 15 USD before from their text subscription.

I also, too, suggest Vital. If I'm not mistaken, they are trying to make synths, sampling, and sound design more accessible to people and provide a starting place.

AquesTone2 Want to play with a vocal synth? I haven't touched this one in a hot second, but it's fun to noodle around with. I'm pretty sure you have to use kanji, and you load it into a text pad file or something, but it's fun to play with.

PLUGINS 4 FREE - Free Instrument Audio Plugins Archive I've been using this site for a long time, they've gone through a name change, but there are so many plugins on this site. They have everything.

Densine's Orchestral Samples This one is off of reddit, and I've used this one religiously for a long time too since it offers a nice selection of quality percussion samples.

x.shulz's lofi drumkit Another reddit pack. I have been using this sample pack for a long af time as well. If you want to write lofi, or love lofi sounding percussion, this is an amazing pack to check out.

LMMS CakeWalk should work just fine, and they actually have a lot of great other sound packs and stuff, but if you're like me and you like noodling around with other software, LMMS is another, decently simple to-use DAW. It's been around for a hot second, and it comes with it's own plugins similar to some of the ones FL Studio offers. It also supports external plugins and VSTs to my knowledge.

Freesound Freesound is literally just a site with a bunch of user-submitted sounds. Make sure to read the description and stuff if you're allowed to use the sound, plus there are filters for the license of the sound and even an area for samples.

musictheory.net Okay, this one is serious guys. This is literally if not the best, one of the best music theory tools out there. Music teachers in high school and COLLEGE use this (we're literally using it in my college theory classes with an older professor so, it's good shit (I also used it in high school music classes)). They have nice little lessons and practices, and it's FREE. Take advantage of this tool. Wanna get better at reading sheet music? Want to learn intervals? Want to learn how to construct triads and chords? Want to learn about the different scales including modal, pentatonic, blues, and whole tone? It has everything you could really probably need.

NOW GET OUT THERE AND MAKE MUSIC!!!!!
