Bram Stoker, mangaka, over 100 years ago with incredible predictive accuracy: Well, I'd best leave a few weeks between entries here, a mid season hiatus is a healthy tradition that will build anticipation and give stragglers time to catch up for all those following along in real time in the year of our Lord 2024

You may have done this already, but I'd love to see Drac in his awkward straw hat. That scene killed me, I had no idea the drac in a hat jokes were canonical
My Dracula design may be an ominous silhouette, but he’s an ominous silhouette with sun protection.

Modern-day jobs for Dracula characters
Yes, most Dracula characters already have jobs that still exist in the modern day: solicitor, doctor, teacher etc. But being in the modern day would have them make different choices so... what would they do instead?
Mina Harker: I don't really get the sense that Mina actually enjoys being a teacher; it's just a job that's available to her as an educated woman in the 1890s. What Mina does like: planning, order, timetables, schedules. Mina would be the best project manager you've ever met.
Jack Seward: Jack should not have a people-focused job, and he should be working with vulnerable people least of all. He's great at observation, and he loves to make a difference and be told that he's a good clever boy. Oh, and he's a big fan of up-to-the-minute technology too. We only need to change his career trajectory slightly, and he would be a very happy research scientist.
Arthur Holmwood: Not many British noblemen are able to live lives of idle luxury any more, so even if his family still owned the Ring estate, he would need to do something more to keep it going. Arthur likes people, travel, music, sport and the good life. So I think, like many modern-day noblemen, he would use the estate itself to generate income: hosting weddings, concerts, conferences and team-building days.
Lucy Westenra: Honestly I think Lucy would love the idea of working with Arthur on the estate. She'd hardly be getting married at 19 in 2023, but she might be getting a BA in Hotel and Hospitality Management with that future in mind.
Quincey Morris: What job does an adventurer/cowboy do in the 21st century? I can't imagine Quincey spending his days sitting at a desk. It needs to be something intense and physical, but also representative of a moment in time that isn't going to last. Quincey works on an oil rig.
Jonathan Harker: Tricky, because Jonathan is so defined by being a solicitor. But a modern-day Jonathan would have far more options for progressing in his career. He has a way with words and a kind and generous nature. I think he'd be an excellent charity grant writer.
Abraham van Helsing: I'm afraid there is no time period or universe in which Van Helsing M. D., D. Ph., D. Lit., etc., etc. is anything other than an academic.

I just have the deep desire to make different dolls of different versions of Jonathan:
Pre-horrors boy
cut himself shaving boy
No shoes, bags under his eyes, five o'clock shadow boy
+shovel accessory
Worn and torn clothes with *kisses* on his throat boy
+birthday cake accessory
So many possibilities so many boys

Droughtula left a vampire shaped hole in your heart?
Looking for more vampires to fill it with?
Consider Not Quite Dead, a show about vampires!
The show is complete at 14 episodes and to describe it as homoerotic is, uh. An understatement!! With plenty of blood, angst and biting of both the consensual and non-consensual varieties, this show is a gory horror romance oscillating between deeply sensual moments between a vampire and his boyfriend/prey, musings on the inherent violence and liberation of transformation, and descriptions of horrible rotting things that only have the urge to feast. Dare I say it has more epic highs and lows than high school football?
Find it wherever you listen to podcasts!

Hey, it's a droughtula, right? Let's be funny.
So, I was looking through my photos and I came across this screenshot... and it sort of exemplifies my reaction here to Quincey thirst specifically regarding his slang-filled proposal to Lucy.
This is a screenshot of the lyrics to Boys 'Round Here by Blake Shelton. The poster child of bad country songs.
The red underline is me frantically trying to communicate to my non-American friend which lyrics were egregious stereotypes that border on maddening. It's such a thorough dressing down of southern US culture... that you would think it was satire made to mock us. It's beautiful for all the wrong reasons. This is what I heard while Quincey was using slang. They like that y'all...
Now, for some people, this song would rightfully trigger a fight or flight response. For me... the only possible reaction is to throw my head back and sing along. Poorly, of course, it doesn't deserve to be sung well.

i'm so mad at Bram Stoker for not anticipating that his 1897 novel Dracula would be adapted over a hundred years later into a format that only releases installments on the dates in his novel - resulting in several hiatuses when there are no installments released - which has, most importantly, personally inconvenienced me!
#istg bram why do you hate me so much#droughtula is a personal attack#yes i've read this novel several times before why do you ask#because reading ahead would be CHEATING#i'm not a MONSTER#dracula daily#dracula#re: dracula#droughtula#bram stoker

Crew of light as dogs...
Based on this post. Exactly what it sounds like. Some fluff to aid you all in getting through the Droughtula.
I would like to thank @re-dracula for being absolutely brilliant and thank @victoriantheorist14, @see-arcane, @marghen and @garnetsfists for their service to the Dracula (1897) fandom at this time.
I would also like to highlight my friends, @zoophagist, @wcstenra, @carpathianprince @gingerhastoomanyobsessions @the-brat-prince-1760 and @withinycu, we shall survive the droughtula. 💞
Disclaimer: contains vague spoilers for the book Dracula (1897). Proceed no further baby bats. 🦇
1. Mina Murray/Mina Harker - beagle. - the most intelligent character in the novel, other than Jonathan the primary hunter of Dracula. Beagles are known well for their intelligence and ability to hunt.
2. Jonathan Harker - Labrador retriever. - A sporting and family dog, thoroughly charming and intelligent but understated to a point. Just like our dear friend Jonathan. Can spot red flags from a good distance, they however, can’t always act to protect themselves.
3. Lucy Westenra - Yorkshire terrier - charming, intelligent, earnest, would not deliberately hurt anyone and amiable. Just like our ingenue, Lucy.
4. Van Helsing - Dutch Shepard - a herding dog, somewhat parental, Dutch, clever and known to read signs and cues very well.
5. Arthur Holmwood - papillon - charming, upper class, ridiculously cute, and known for their good hair and most thorough innocence and good intentions.
6. Quincey Morris - German Shepard - a ranch dog, strong, steady, versatile, hard working, earnest and loyal to the end, just like our American cowboy.
7. John/Jack Seward - Affenpinscher - a German dog originally bred to kill rats, awkward looking, small, and hard to find in the 21st century. Some may consider them to off putting but if you utilized correctly a useful set of paws, or hands to have on one’s team.
8. Not technically in the polycule but he gets love here.
R. M Renfield - Basenji - an usual dog, known for being “barkless” or “voiceless” in dog terms, often wrongly perceived as lacking substantial will or helpless. This is in fact, untrue, rather than silent this dog “yodels” “sings” and “sirens.” Useful as hunting dogs as Renfield is, despite circumstances useful to our vampire hunting polycule/crew. Basenji often alert their owners of danger and send signals, albeit in no traditional way. What Basenji sound like.

In this chunk of the Droughtula, I'd love to see all the documents we didn't get to read:
The diary of Mary, the maid the Harkers inherited from Mr Hawkins, wondering where on earth her new employers have gone.
The report from Patrick Hennessey, M. D., M. R. C. S. L. K. Q. C. P. I., etc., sent to assorted British embassies in the Balkans in the hope of finding Jack Seward somewhere, about the condition of patients in the asylum and the closed police case into the death of RM Renfield.
The notes from the lawyer that Dr Hennessey went to see, to figure out just how implicated he might be if - hypothetically, of course - Renfield had been murdered.
The gossip column noting the sudden departure from the country of the new Lord Godalming, presumably stricken by grief from the loss of his father and fiancée in short order, with some speculation about when this most eligible bachelor might be back on the market.
The postcard from Varna that Van Helsing sent to the colleagues he asked about vampire myths earlier in the year.
The letters between the said colleagues wondering why the hell Van Helsing is now in Varna and what does he mean, send more Communion Wafers and top up the dispensation??

I am going slightly feral at the idea of Jonathan and Christine Daaé meeting and having the same "music teacher"; especially the mirror scene????
Jonno getting slight PTSD seeing Erik IN the mirror but not behind him, a complete inverse of his encounters with Dracula
Jonno: Mademoiselle Christine, please tell me he doesn't sleep in the crypt
Christine: oh no, he just lives below the opera house, has a coffin shaped bed...
Jonno: *scream sing*
#i am being very normal about this very casual very MILD#dracula daily#dracula#droughtula#phantom of the opera#i want our gothic heroines to meet and hang out
