Letting go can be so very hard to do, no matter what it is that you’re letting go of. At this time of year the focus of letting go mostly falls on bad habits with the emphasis being on self improvement. This week I was sharply reminded by the death of a beloved colleague to cancer, that the process of letting go sometimes starts with a forced, harsh and numbing experience. Families and friends do not chose to let go of loved ones, but are forced to start that process. It is not one of choice. A blunt reminder that life is precious and that, before our chance passes us by, it’s so important to give ourselves permission to let go of things that are holding us back now...not tomorrow...if you envisage yourself in 5 years time what is it that you see yourself having completely let go of? With the end of the year fast approaching many will be thinking about where the year has gone and what can be done differently next year. Thoughts of the year and past years may include happy memories but more than likely there will be some that bring on feelings of sadness and loss. Remorseful memories can be particularly difficult as they are often accompanied by thoughts of ‘I should or shouldn’t have done X, Y or Z’. Living within the memory by going over it again and again or recalling every detail about what was or was not said or done will only bring more pain. I am genuinely sorry if something bad happened to you... but it has now passed...it is gone. All that remains is the memory attached to it. Problems may even be continuing. But by engaging with the negative memories repeatedly they develop a life of their own and may even start to resemble something different and far worse than your first experience of the actual event that took place initially. The pain will also more than likely grow too. Thoughts about a bad situation, may now be thoughts about life being hopeless or about your lack of power to improve things...these are also thoughts...they hold no weight. Power to change partly lies in choosing to experience life differently, by living in the moment and feeling through the heart. Life is not just about intellectualising, rationalising, blaming, recalling and criticising yourself - although the human mind is great at the negative stuff! Change is not easy but it is possible. Seek help from others if you need to. Speak to others you can trust. Know that the future will be what you make it from this point onwards. There is hope. ‘Kindness’ - the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate. Sometimes we might try to be kind and feel it’s not reciprocated or appreciated and then hold back on further efforts to show acts of kindness thinking that it’s the best thing we can do to protect ourselves from other people’s lack of kindness. While this makes some sense as a form of protection be careful not to start sowing the seeds of resentment within your own mind. The act of self protection may become harmful. By holding yourself back you might actually start to pay attention to what other people don’t do for you. Keep yourself safe. But act in ways that make you feel good. Acts of kindness not only help the recipient but they can also you yourself in many ways. Being kind has been shown to release oxytocin which releases nitric oxide and dilates the blood vessels - result = the molecules of kindness which lead to lower blood pressure 👍🏽👏🏽✔️ How can you be kind today? How are you? Three simple words. Not hard to pronounce yet sometimes hard to bring ourselves to say...maybe for the fear of not knowing how to cope with an emotionally loaded response or maybe because we know that most of the time people will respond with ‘fine thankyou, and you?’... it can be hard know how to help others... but it can all start with these three simple words... used alongside a focussed attention on the other person... a comfortable silence while you wait for the other person to respond and shift in your tone of speech... these subtle changes can help a person to understand that you’re actually interested in their reply... and more often than not simply listening is the most helpful part in supporting someone with difficulties, making them feel heard and understood and as though somebody cares... Actually taking the time out for others is very important but it’s also important to ask ourselves how we’re really doing too... connect with yourself today, ask yourself how you are and wait a moment to listen to the real answer.... On world mental health day many organisations are promoting ways in which they can help and support people - please be mindful of the different ways to access mental health support. Talk about the day to others, why it exists and how it can help. Criticism - the expression of disapproval of someone (or something) on the basis of PERCEIVED faults or mistakes. Many people from all walks of life fear the manifestation of criticism. Criticism can lead to humiliation, embarrassment, a sense of failing and not being good enough. So a classic response to this fear can be to avoid criticism by all means...by doing nothing, by saying nothing and by being nothing...although taken literally a person who didn’t say or do anything would be criticised severely ...imagine a mother who had a house to run, who hose to say or do nothing...perhaps criticism would even come before concern... However, Aristotle was talking in much broader terms of advancement. If we want to advance ourselves and therefore those around us we can only go in one direction...towards change, which would necessitate saying and doing things differently, which opens the door towards criticism... Receiving criticism may not be as daunting as we think..it can have many benefits such as helping us to see things from a different perspective and enable us to potentially take on board feedback. These are skills learnt after/alongside accepting that criticism can be constructive if not taken personally. If criticism is delivered with an attacking slant remember that criticism does NOT equal fact, instead it equals somebodies perspective at that time, in those circumstances within that persons life, within their capacity. They may not be capable of seeing things differently or with kinder eyes....and that doesn’t make the thing they are criticising right or wrong...their criticism is simply an outward expression of their internal limitations. However you perceive criticism, understand and learn to embrace it. Perspective is a big thing. Anything is possible. I’ve chosen to snapshot this rather than repost as some of the comments on this original post were simply disgusting and inhumane. The original post highlighted to me how very amazing people can be but the comments also showed me how utterly cruel the world that we live in can also be and how lots of people simply chose to ignore inspiration when it is staring them in the face. The lotus flower - a thing of pure beauty and mesmerisation. It grows in muddy water yet remains detached from its filth. It stands out completely uniquely amongst its natural setting and even looks misplaced. The lotus flower may symbolise purity of body, speech, and mind to some because while rooted in the mud, its flowers blossom on long stalks as if floating above the muddy waters. Some regard the waters to represent attachment and desire with the lotus remaining completely untouched by them. It’s expanding leaves representing a spiritual awakening and an expanding of the soul...some may think that’s it’s just a pretty flower in some dirty water... Whatever your perspective it may be useful to visualise and take inspiration that such a thing of beauty, a living thing can emerge from a muddied past... World & international best friend day... Whilst our various social media accounts advertise popularity through likes and numbers of friends, minds are easily consumed with thoughts about other people being liked more because they are thinner, fitter, prettier, more wealthy, intelligent, handsome or funny. In comparison our explanation for what we are not, feeds our negative beliefs about not being good enough for a number of reasons. However there are an increasing amount of discussions about the flaws of modern day social media and its effects on self esteem especially amongst the younger generation. Beliefs about friends are also being challenged and it’s becoming increasingly accepted that it’s practically Impossible to actually have 500+ ‘friends’. This raises the question of ‘What is a best friend?’. This answer will vary for each of us but may have common themes of reliability, care, warmth, honesty and acceptance. Whilst we may be trained to look outwards towards traits in other people, it’s so easy to forget that the most important friendship we need to build is with ourselves. When we are able to be kind, compassionate and honest with ourselves our celebration of our friendship will take place daily through actions which are created through pure self approval and validation.
