After writing fnf/pico's school fanfiction for a few years, I've come to the conclusion that people either want D&D inspired stuff when it comes to my 13 - 16+ stories, or just the fun times at night. Everything else goes under the radar, and I now know what people want from me based on my stats alone.
I'm happy that people love the D&D centric stuff. I can hit two birds with one stone with how much I love D&D. I'm never writing a story with RNG again, but that won't stop me from putting all this autism filled fantasy into my fics.
But also dragons.
#dragons my favourite fantasy creature#fnf#friday night funkin#picos school#ao3 things#I should honestly look at ao3 stats more often instead of just wondering what ppl read the most#now if only I could focus on one story at a time like before#adhd the bane of my existence

THE BIRDāS BOOKSHOP
BANNER ART: KADEART
Keigo Takami x GN!Reader
CONTENT: bookworm keigo x bookworm reader, pure fluff, keigo has bird mannerisms + is the cutest hopeless romantic
WORD COUNT: 447
AUTHOR NOTE: thank you so much for 100 followers!! i appreciate every single one of you, every single interaction! i loved writing this one, im thinking of making it a fluff miniseries? for now, be safe, friends! you are so loved!
In one universe, Keigo Takami is one of JapanāsĀ top heroes. Heās saving lives everyday, constantly on high alert. Heās a marionette on a string, the puppeteer the HPSC - they raised him, made him into a āheroā.Ā
In another universe, Keigo Takami spends his days with his face in a book, sipping his favourite sweet, canned coffee.Ā
He adores fantasy novels, he gets lost in them for hours. Losing himself in the pages, with every turn comes with it a new discovery. Keigo is captivated by the mystique, the weird and wonderful creatures bound by ink and paper.Ā
He reads of unlikely heroes, pilgrims, sorcery and witchcraft, dragons and humans with wings; those are his favourite characters, he loves seeing himself in them.Ā
If heās not at a locally-owned cafe, Keigo will be at the bookstore. When heās not clocked in at the library, heās at his second home. He spends hours scanning the shelves, reading blurbs of books he found interesting, re-shelving them with careful fingers.Ā
All the employees know him, they love the charming, golden bird that always walks in with a smile and stars in his eyes.Ā
Heās tried local book clubs, but found that they thought his incessant rambling - or, chirping - about his latest reads to be rather irritating.Ā
At times, Keigo felt erroneous, a dusty, tattered thing among a freshly-printed paperback.Ā
That was until he wandered again into the bookshop, and saw you sauntering around the fantasy section - his place in the bookstore.Ā
He didnāt feel territorial, as a bird of his stature would. Instead, Keigo Takami found himself besotted by the stranger gazing at the spine of one of his favourite novels.Ā
He has to fight down an excited chirp as he sees your hands fold over the book, you slip it out and read over the blurb. Though, his wings flap audibly and catch your attention, the soft breeze tickling your face.Ā
You look over and smile at the sheepish bird in front of you, an awkward smile plastered on his face, redder than his wings.Ā
āSorry-! Uh, I couldnāt help but notice youād picked up some of my favourites!āĀ
You can hear the excitement in the birdās voice, and feel those emotions repeated in the beating of your heart.Ā
You beam, āYeah! Theyāre one of my favourite authors, actually,āĀ
The bookstore staff watched as you enamoured over each other, discussing your beloved fantasy novels; the best parts of ongoing series, plot twists and your favourite characters.Ā
They smiled.Ā
Keigo Takami had finally found someone who shared his love for the world within pages of a book. Little did he know that youād been searching for the exact same thing.Ā

If You Would Promise Me Your Heart
For my Eddie, @steveshairychest.
Every nerd in Steveās life had their mythical creature niche.
Robin loved pixies. Channelling their mischievous energy into her everyday life, bouncing around the store while they were on shift, even joking sheād get a pixie cut one day.
Nancy, though she would deny it to anyone outside their circle, loved fairies. Soft but calculating, intelligent and beautiful, when they had visited the ren faire the year prior her cheeks matched her glittery wings.
Dustin loved hobbits and Steve loved to affectionately call him one even as the boy grew just as tall as him, the excitement that crossed his face when Steve agreed to watch the movies with him made the confusing deep lore worth it.
Lucas loved ents. Steve would often find him in the woods just listening to the trees, he was the only one of them that would still brave the forest at night, the trees would keep him safe.
Max loved harpies. If Steve were to give any proof that these creatures existed, heād just tell you to look at Maxās face when some boy told her girls canāt skate.
Will loved merfolk. When they visited the beach last summer Steve could see the years of stress melt away from the young boyās face as he listened to the waves, the water washing away the memories.
El loved elves. She loved the many forms they came in from fantasy to Christmas, that they could be fun or loud or quiet or brave, that they could be whatever they wanted to pointy ears just made them a little special.
Mike loved griffins. He knew that being both just made you stronger, that you can be strong and brave and protect the things you love, that being different doesnāt make you less whole.
Erica loved unicorns. She would hit you if she heard you saying they were anything less than metal.
Which of course leads us to Steveās favourite nerd, Eddie.
Eddie loved dragons.
The first thing he did once his scars had healed enough was to get a beautiful dragon tattoo across them, the rough skin almost like scales through the dragonās back.
One of his most prized possessions is a massive red dragon figure for his campaigns.
Steve thinks heās seen the How to Train Your Dragon movies more than every seven-year-old in the world because itās the only things that make Eddie feel better when he has nightmares. He has seen them so many times that he can recite his own favourite scene by heart.
Theyāre in the small clearing in the woods behind their house, itās spring, the afternoon is warm and the wind is calming. The sun is setting, they are sharing a small picnic, itās perfect. The sun is bathing them in a golden light, Steve thinks Eddie would be beautiful even if the world was pitch black.
Itās time.
He whistles out the first few notes.
āIāll swim and sail on savage seas, with neāer a fear of drowning. And gladly ride the waves of life, if you will marry me.ā
Eddie has turned to Steve recognising the song, his eyes are as bright as the love between them.
āNo scorching sun, nor freezing cold, will stop me on my journey.ā
Eddieās eyes are shining, heāll blame them on allergies.
āIf you will promise me your heart, and love,ā Steve looks expectantly at Eddie.
Eddie face breaks into a smile at Steveās pause.
āAnd love me for eternity,ā he continues, āMy dearest one, my darling dear, your mighty words astound me. But Iāve no need for mighty deeds when I feel your arms around me,ā Eddie sings pulling Steve to his feet as he stands.
Steve laughs as he continues, āBut I would bring you rings of gold, Iād even sing you poetry!ā
āOh would you?ā Eddie giggles.
āAnd I would keep you from all harm, if you would stay beside me.ā
āI have no use for rings of gold, I care not for your poetry; I only want your hand to hold,ā Eddie sings lacing their fingers.
āI only want you near me.ā
The boys begin to spin and dance to only the tune of their voices.
āTo love and kiss, to sweetly hold, for the dancing and the dreaming. Through all lifeās sorrows and delights, Iāll keep your laugh inside me.ā
Eddie begins to spin from Steve the joy bubbling up inside him, not even noticing Steveās voice has gotten softer.
āIāll swim and sail a savage seas, with neāer a fear of drowning. And gladly ride the waves of life if-ā the last words catching in his throat as he looks at Steve, down on one knee.
āIf you will marry me.ā Steve finishes, a beautiful black ring in the shape of a dragon protecting a ruby in its centre laying in a black box in his hand. āFor the dancing and the dreaming, Stevie, yes.ā

Reasons to LOVE Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves
It's brand new in cinemas, so there are still plenty who ain't seen it, so if you're among 'em best skip this and just GO SEE IT, it's SO well worth it, genuinely it's one of the best new movies I've seen so far this year. Hope you love it as much as I did!
So, yeah, there you go - SPOILER WARNING, FOLKS!!! If you don't wanna get spoiled, RUN!!!
Still here? Okay, here we go then ...
This really is, UNAPOLOGETICALLY, a comedy. I mean yeah, this is a classic fantasy action adventure in the Willow, Krull or Ladyhawke mold, but it is also very enthusiastically POKING FUN at the classic conventions of the genre ... albeit CLEARLY done with great affection and love for the material, as only the best lampoons can be. So this is more The Princess Bride or Galaxy Quest than Your Highness or Spaceballs ...
Chris Pine is ALWAYS at his best when he's being FUNNY, so he is PERFECT here. Edgin is most definitely a bit of a douchebag, but he's the sweetest, most lovable douchebag you'll ever encounter.
Holga. Literally just EVERYTHING about Holga. She's my favourite character in this, this REALLY IS the best role that Michelle Rodriguez has EVER HAD, if you ask me. She's a total badass, a truly AMAZING FIGHTER, but I love that despite her dour demeanour she's actually quite sweet, gentle and really a great innocent in many ways. She's an absolute cinammon roll and must be protected at all costs.
OH MY GODS!!! All the easter eggs, SO MANY easter eggs ... FAR too many to count throughout, all the references and nods and winks to the game itself, all the spells and races and creatures and stuff ... but I love how the movie NEVER beats you over the head pointing any of it out, it just lets you enjoy it. So the proper fans will get a huge kick out of spotting it all, but casual viewers will just enjoy it as rich worldbuilding colour and flavour.
Seriously though, it's a D&D fan's DREAM!!! Not just the mimic, or the owlbear, or the gelatinous cube! SO MUCH to spot ...
Justice Smith's Simon gets THE CLEVEREST and best introduction in the film, I love the theatre scene, he's SO BAD at this while also simulataneously being really great. Totally sums up this gloriously clunky hot mess of a sorcerer ...
the opening is GENIUS, totally sets the movie up as it means to go on - the parole hearing is a brilliant comedic take on the scene-setting infodump which is brilliantly carried through in the way the movie delivers exposition in a fun way or just lets you absorb it through what's happening in each scene. This is the perfect, TEXTBOOK way to do it.
"That is one pudgy dragon!" LOL
Doric. Just EVERYTHING about Doric. Sophia Lillis' tiefling druid is a wonderful diminutive little action hero, so fiesty and capable. I love her. It's just a shame she's not primary coloured, I'd have loved it even more if she'd been blue, or red ...
The Wildshape Escape! XD Yeah, I love that, that's THE BEST set-piece in the whole movie, definitely, when Doric gets cught out spying and has to shapeshift on the fly to get away, and it all plays out in one immersive single shot that just leaves your heart in your mouth ...
Oh, the Speak With The Dead montage, that is comedy GOLD. Funniest scene in the whole movie. And with added payoff at the end! XD
Rege-Jean Page's Xenk Yendar. Oh boy, that paladin is something else. I love how LITERAL he is, he's like Drax in GOTG but much more intelligent. Y'know when Holga says: "You're not a lot of fun, are you?" to him? She's so wrong. I just wish there was more of him in this ...
The heist! Oh, the heist! So good ... the portal trick, it's great, love the way they did that, and then that HILARIOUS bard illusion distraction - Pine skipping the song like a broken record was just chef's kiss!
That wonderful wibbly-wobbly illusory reality thing whenever Simon tries to atune to the Helm ... wow, that is some spectacularly trippy shit. Granted, twice is fine for terms of pacing, but I could've done with a few more scenes of that, it's fascinating.
Hugh Grant really has just become a MASTER at playing smarmy, slimy duplicitous gits now, hasn't he? Forge is a reprehensible prick and I love it.
I love how they made Bradley Cooper a halfling for his cameo. They're never gonna let him live down the fact that he's now probably best known for playing a two-foot-tall talking racoon so forever after he will be a Short King.
Wow, Daisy Head's Sofina is a CRACKING villain, she's just SO CREEPY!!! I love how coolly menacing she is, a brilliant dark necromantic wizard that just makes your skin crawl. Especially at the end ... IS SHE a lich? Is that what they were doing there?
That whole big action climax, the showdown in the city centre is FIRE!!! It's so amazing, so brilliantly dynamic, with EVEN MORE great easter eggs! Simon and Sofina having an insanely awesome "arm wrestling" bout with Mage Hand versus Earthen Grasp (I think that's the spell, couldn't be sure), oh my gods! So cool ... and then the way they neutralised the threat! Brilliant.
Chloe Coleman's Kira is an absolutely adorable delight, and I think she's ENTIRELY JUSTIFIED in how pissed she is at Edgin for abandoning her. It makes the payoff when they finally make up so much better.
And that resurrection scene at the end? Yeah, sure, I saw that coming a mile off, but it was so well done, and they played it so well, that it was still SUCH a powerful scene even so. Just perfect.
Seriously, they just did this whole thing SO PERFECTLY. It's visually STUNNING, really it just looks AMAZING, and the action sequences are BRILLIANT but always feel entirely necessary for the story, which is how you want to do it. Best of all, though, is THE PACING!!! This is such a quick, breezy film, it just barrels along at a spectacular clip, so it never drags. Mark Kermode is right, even though this is two and a quarter hours long it doesn't FEEL LIKE IT, it feels like a super-trim 90-minute movie.
And it ties everything off nice and neat, too. Sure, there are definitely possibilities for the future, going forward if they make more, but if the movie DOES tank then it's fine, because this really does do a great job about feeling self-contained and telling its own complete story, so if we DON'T get more it won't be too big a disappointment ...

Male Harpy/Female Reader SFW Wordcount: 2,918 CommissionsĀ |Ā Ko-fiĀ |Ā Masterlist
You catch a cute and bashful harpy in the book shop one day. Later, at a book signing for your favourite author, you realise theyāre one and the same.
In the softly lit maze of the bookshop, you meandered between the shelves, your fingertips grazing the spines of countless books. The smell of paper and binding glue filled the air. This was your retreat, the place you went to when the world got too much.
As you approached the fantasy section, your excitement grew; today was the release of a novel you'd eagerly awaited. Just as you reached out to grab the last copy from the shelf, another hand got there simultaneously, lightly brushing against yours.
"Oops, sorry about that," came a light-hearted apology from beside you.
You looked up to see a harpy, all dark auburn feathers and curly red hair. He was beautifulāsharp features softened by gentle brown eyes, a nervous smile playing on his lips.
"No worries," you responded, your initial embarrassment giving way to curiosity. "Looks like we have the same taste."
His smile widened. "I guess we do. Iām Antal," he said, holding out the book to you. "You take the last copy, I was only looking.ā
āOh, I couldnātāā
āPlease?ā
His hand extended, offering you the book. A bright orange cover stared back up at you, a phoenix with her wings spread wide.
āPlease, take it,ā he insisted, claws gently curled over the cover.
You hesitated, the politeness ingrained in you bubbling to the surface. āAre you sure? I mean, we both spotted it at the same time.ā
Antalās smile didnāt waver as he pushed the book a little closer to you. āAbsolutely. I hope you enjoy it,ā he added, and you swore his cheeks tinged pink beneath the feathers.
Accepting the book, you couldnāt help but smile back. āThanks, then. I appreciate it.ā
As he watched you slide the book into your bag, a thoughtful look crossed his face. āAny other books youāre hunting for today?ā he asked, a curious tilt to his head. His dark eyes were enormous, with big pupils that made him look a little owlish.
Was he an owl?
Shaking your head, you said, āwell, Iāve been trying to get through all the works of Kristoff Varga,ā you replied, holding up the new book. It was the latest in a series of four, but there were dozens of other books written by him. āHeās my favourite at the moment, I just canāt get enough.ā
Antalās eyes lit up, cheeks reddening even more. Dammit, it was too cute. āYou like his other books?ā
āI like them all so far.ā
āWhich oneās your favorite?ā Antal inquired. He didnāt seem to realise that he was leaning in, closer and closer.
You thought for a moment, trying to ignore how close he was. You could taste the coffee on his breath, feel his feathers tickling your shoulder. It made it very difficult to think.
After a moment you said, āI love Silver Skies. You know, the one about the dragon and the orc princess.ā
āI love that one too!ā
As you and Antal meandered through the aisles, he began to point out other authors whose works he said were similar to Kristoff Varga. You happily ambled alongside him, listening to his smooth, deep voice.
"If you enjoy Varga, you might also like Helena Rook. Her trilogy about the war between night creatures and humans has that same worldbuilding," he suggested, pulling a book with a dark, moody cover from the shelf.
You took the book, flipping it over to read the blurb on the back. Antal's recommendations sparked a new interest, and you added it to the growing pile.
He pointed out a few more, and you ended up needing a basket to hold all of the books. The entire time he chatted away happily, talking about this author and the next, and you found yourself inching unconsciously closer to his side.
As you approached a display of new releases, Antal casually asked, "So, do you have any plans for the weekend? Other than reading all of these books, I suppose."
The question hung in the air, and for a moment, you thought he might be leading up to asking you out.
The hopeful part of your mind spun scenarios of continuing these delightful conversations over coffee or at a quiet park.
Except, you were busy.
"Actually, Iām going to Vargaās book signing on Saturday," you answered, watching his reaction closely, trying to gauge his interest. "You should come along; itās rare to see him in public."
Antalās face flickered with an unreadable expression before settling into a polite smile. "Iād love to, but Iām already tied up that day," he replied with a small shrug.
You felt a twinge of disappointment. "Thatās too bad," you said. "It would have been great to have you there, especially since you appreciate his work so much."
Antal nodded, his smile tinged with a hint of something you couldn't quite placeāwas it regret? āYouāll have to tell me about it. Maybe I could give you my number?ā
āIād love that.ā
The question filled you with a pleasant anticipation. You entered his number carefully, excited hands a little too fast for your own good.
He smiled as you both stored your phones away. āI have to go, I was only going to pop in for a minute. Maybe Iāll see you again sometime soon?ā
You shivered at the softness, the gentleness, in his voice. āYeah, that would be great.ā
As you moved to the checkout, you felt a sense of contentment. Antal stood beside you as you paid for your books, almost close enough to touch. It wouldnāt have taken much for you to close the gap, and kiss him.
As you thanked the desk clerk, you sighed. Kissing him! What a silly thought.
With your books bagged and receipt in hand, you both walked towards the exit. Antal held the door open for you. As you stepped outside, the sunlight turned his auburn feathers a gorgeous golden shade.
There was an undeniable grace about himāa fluidity in his movements that, under the sunshine, made him almost ethereal. His shoulders were broad, tapering into narrower hips, covered in a layer of fluffy feathers beneath his low cut top.
You paused outside the bookstore, smiling gently. āSee you around?ā you asked hopefully.
āAbsolutely.ā
You didnāt want to say goodbye, but you had to eventually. With a sigh, you offered him a smile before turning to the car park across the street.
You felt his eyes on you as you walked away. A quick glance back confirmed it, and he offered you a parting wave with claw-tipped hands, a gesture that you returned. As he turned to vanish around the corner, you paused for a moment to watch him.
Antal disappeared quickly; he was tall, with gorgeously long legs. Even from a distance, there was something about the way he moved that captivated youāmaybe it was the otherness of him, since harpies were so rare in Oceanhall. Maybe it was his sweet personality, his flushed cheeks and shy smile.
Either way, he left an impression that lingered in your thoughts as you unlocked your car and settled inside.
You started the engine, but your mind was still back in the bookstore, replaying your conversation, his laughter, and the ease with which you had opened up to each other.
You really wanted to see him again.
***
You arrived at the bookstore on Saturday, the buzz of excitement obvious as soon as you stepped inside. The queue for Kristoff Varga's book signing snaked through the aislesāa fact that hadn't fully dawned on you until now. Each person in line clutched their copy of his latest novel, their animated conversations filling the air with anticipatory chatter.
Trying to catch a glimpse of Varga at the signing booth proved futile; the crowd was simply too dense, a wall of eager fans blocking any view of the author himself. Feeling slightly overwhelmed, you decided to escape to the relative calm of the bookstoreās cafĆ©.
As you approached the counter, the barista greeted you with a friendly smile. āWhat can I get for you today? Something to help with the wait?ā he asked, his tone light.
āA flat white, please,ā you replied, appreciating the warmth in his greeting. āItās quite a turnout, isnāt it? I didnāt realise Varga was this popular.ā
āYeah, itās been non-stop since we opened,ā the barista said as he started on your order. āItās good for business, but Iām running out of hands!ā He laughed, handing you your coffee with a flourish.
āThank you,ā you said, taking a sip of the hot beverage, and digging out your card to pay. āI suppose itās not every day you get a celebrity author here.ā
āThatās true. Heās a bit of a recluse, isnāt he? Makes these events all the more special.ā The barista wiped down the counter, casting a glance towards the queue. āYou might be here for a while. At least itās a good crowd, all book lovers together.ā
You nodded, agreeing, your thoughts drifting to Antal. Throughout the week, you had exchanged messages. He had mentioned being busy today, but a part of you had still hoped he might surprise you and turn up.
With your coffee in hand, you found a table near the window, a spot that offered a view of both the cafƩ and the bookstore entrance. Each time the door opened, your gaze lifted, a reflex action fuelled by the hope of seeing Antal walk in. However, as the minutes turned into an hour, the reality set in that he truly wasn't coming.
You took out your phone, typing a quick message to him: itās packed here! Wish you couldāve seen it. Howās your day going?
Even as you hit send, you felt disappointment and understanding mingle.
As you waited for his response, you sipped your coffee, watching the crowd and wondering about the man behind the author's desk. What would Varga be like? Would he live up to the mental image you had of him?
As the line began to shorten, you decided it was time to join the queue, balancing your coffee carefully as you edged closer to the excited throng of fans. The energy around you was infectious, with snippets of conversation floating over the buzz of the crowd.
"Can you believe we're actually going to meet Kristoff Varga?" exclaimed a young woman ahead of you, her voice pitched high with excitement.
"I know, right? I heard he's a harpy, which is why he hardly ever makes public appearances," her friend replied, the idea clearly adding an extra layer of allure to the event.
You perked up at this, the coincidence striking you as odd. Two harpies in one week? It was rare enough to meet one, given their usual reclusiveness. The thought lingered in your mind as you inched forward, the lineās pace steady but slow.
"He must be quite something to look at, then," someone else chimed in, "All those feathers. And the talons!"
"Yeah, and itās not just any harpy. They say his feathers change shades with the seasonsāhow cool is that?" another added, the group nodding in agreement.
As you finally neared the front, you craned your neck, trying to catch a glimpse of the elusive author. There, at the signing booth, you saw himāa figure with striking auburn feathers, his face partly concealed by a black cap. The feathers were glossy under the lights, and strikingly familiar.
No, he couldnāt have beenā¦
"Amazing, isn't it?" the person behind you whispered, almost as if they could read your thoughts. "I've never seen him up close before.ā
You nodded, lost in thought as the line moved forward. Each step brought you closer to Varga, and you craned your neck to try and see his face.
Finally, you were second in line, and your heartbeat thumped against your ribs. Your fingers tightened around the cup of coffee you still held, and you fumbled slightly as you pulled the book from your bag. You smoothed down the cover, trying to calm your nerves, your mind still reeling.
When it was your turn, you stepped up to the booth, and he looked up. Your breath caught in your throat.
Antal.
His auburn feathers seemed more pronounced here, under the softer lights of the signing table, and when his eyes met yours, there was a moment of mutual recognition that ground everything to a halt.
Antal's expression softened. He cleared his throat, his voice softer, more tentative than before. "Hello, nice to see you again.ā
You were momentarily at a loss for words, the surprise pinning you in place. Finally, you managed to speak, your voice a whisper of confusion and curiosity. "Why didn't you tell me who you were?"
He hesitated, his glance flickering away before meeting yours again. "Because I wanted you to like me for myself, not as Varga," he admitted with a shrug. "It's easy to like someone for their success or their fame... but you were so excited to meet Kristoff Vargaā¦ I wanted to hold off the inevitable."
His honesty struck a chord. A soft laugh escaped you as you shook your head slightly, the absurdity and the sweetness of his concern mingling together. "That's so silly," you said fondly. "I like you, Antal, and I like Varga. They're both you, aren't they?"
Antal's expression lightened, a relieved smile breaking through his initial reserve. "I'm glad to hear that," he said, his eyes brightening.
As an impatient murmur from the person behind you grew louder, Antalās laughter broke the brief tension, his demeanor relaxing as he took your book to sign it. As he handed the book back, his fingers lingered just a bit too long.
āAre you busy later?ā he asked.
āNo, Iām free,ā you replied, the excitement bubbling up inside you, making your heart race with anticipation.
A shy smile spread across his face, his usual confidence tempered with a vulnerability that made him even more endearing. āWould you like to meet up after the signing?ā he ventured, his gaze steady on yours.
āIād love to,ā you said, stepping back to allow him to greet the next fan.
As you moved away from the booth, you heard snippets of conversation and whispers from those around who had caught bits of your exchange with Antal. There was a hint of jealousy in their tones, their eyes following you.
You moved to a quieter part of the bookstore, your heart still fluttering. You sat, waving hello to the barista from earlier, and waited.
As the hours trickled by, you lost yourself in the pages of Antalās new book, glancing up every so often to see the queue dwindle. Around you, the bookstore began to quiet down, the last few patrons lingering as the event wound to a close.
Noticing the time, the barista approached your table with a gentle smile. āWeāll be closing up soon,ā he mentioned, his eyes sweeping over the mostly empty cafĆ©.
āIām just waiting for Varga,ā you explained, hoping it wouldnāt be an inconvenience.
The baristaās eyebrows rose in surprise, a flicker of recognition in his eyes, but he nodded understandingly. āOf course, we donāt close for another thirty minutes,ā he said, and with a final tidy of the table, he left you to wait.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, you saw Antal making his way towards you. The sight of him, free of the signing table and the throngs of fans, reignited the excitement from earlier. You stood up, and as he approached, something in his smile made it impossible to hold back.
You stepped forward and wrapped your arms around him, burying into his feathers. He was so soft and warm, and his closeness sparked something in you. Without really knowing what you were doing, you stood on your toes for a kiss.
The kiss was gentle at first, exploratory, even careful. As you grew more confident, the kiss deepened; you clung to him, hands around his waist to pull him closer.
Antal tasted faintly of sugary coffee and strawberries, a hint of sweetness lingering on his lips. You could feel the slight brush of his feathers, his talons carefully touching your back.
As you stepped back from the kiss, breathless and heart racing, the excitement thrumming through you made your heart stutter. Your lips met his again as you practically crushed yourself against him.
Antal's laugh, light and genuinely happy, mingled with the air between you.
Pulling away a second time, Antal glanced down at the book open on the table. "How are you finding the book?" he asked, his tone playful.
"It's fantastic," you replied, your eyes still locked on his. "I love the romance in itābut I have to say, the real thing is even better."
Antalās response was to pull you close once again, his arms wrapping around you in a hug that lifted you slightly off your feet. The warmth of his body and the strength in his hold were exhilarating.
As he set you back down, your laughter joined his, the sound echoing lightly in the near-empty cafĆ©. You glanced over his shoulder and saw the barista watching, a knowing smile on his face. The sight might have embarrassed you at another time, but right now, it didnāt matter. You were too caught up to care about an audience.
Smiling, you pecked Antal on the cheek and said, ālet them watch. Theyāre just jealous Iāve got you all to myself.ā

Hey! Itās been numerous of months since I last wrote. I was forced to take a hiatus due to severe health issues but Iām hoping to dip my toes back in. Iām 22, my pronouns are she / her, my writing style is advanced literate to novella. I enjoy making friends with my writing partners, creating playlists and Pinterest boards and all of those fun things. I prefer realistic to realistic art for face claims. Either is fine by me! I will only write with those 18 and above. I do prefer writing spicy content. I will play either a female or male muse, Iām happy to double and Iām also happy to do any pairings. Romance is a must for me, even if itās a subplot. I have many tropes I adore, such being : enemies to lovers, star crossed, forbidden love, grumpy x sunshine, soulmates / fated mates, morally grey characters, the villain gets the girl / guy / person. There are numerous others too but I want to keep it relatively short at least. I would love to include a villainous main character right now, be that I write them or I write against them. Iām happy for either!
Iām looking for a fantasy roleplay. I am itching to start one again, Iād love that. Some of my favourite fantasy creatures are, dragons, vampires, fae / elves, gods, demi gods, shapeshifters, and so so many more. I love adding undead as the enemies or puppets of the villain because itās so much fun. Itās a combination of apocalypse and fantasy. I would love a writing partner who shares a genuine deep understanding for my illness and who is also utterly invested in our story together and loves plotting & headcanons as much as I do! Depending on my health, I can reply multiple times a day but I try keep it as regular as possible, unless something particularly serious needs my utmost attention to heal.
I would love to meet likeminded individual who adore immersing in worlds and creating so much together. Creating a Pinterest board for our characters is very inspiring for me also. I happen to have a few plotlines held but If you have ideas, happy to hear them! With all that being said, please interact if you are interested. I apologise profusely if we intended on doing a plot together previously but I left suddenly. I would love to now if any are interested still. You are also more than welcome to message me yourselves! Iām happy to answer questions and see if we match!
Have a lovely day and I look forward to possibly plotting with you :)

What are your favourite dragon quest monsters across the entire series?
The first Dragon Quest Monsters game I've ever gotten to play wound up being the first one to leave out exactly the top three I looked forward to getting:
GIANTSLUG/MAULUSC: I'm pickier about slug and snail creatures than you maybe expect but I love the vapid drippy zombie face of the DQ slug. It perfectly captures the appeal of a slug as a monster, a mindless gooey thing that will just eat you without a care. And its classic color scheme is that of a Banana Slug!!
BELZEBUB: I am also picky about fly creatures; usually I want them to have the proboscis present in some way, and the correct number of wings (two). There's something I still love about the toothy mouth of Belzebub however, maybe the way it curls up between the eyes? It just does a good job capturing the feel of a fly's personality I guess.
DARKEYE/EYELASHER: eye creatures can also very easily feel a bit boring to me because I've just seen so, so many of them, but DQ's basic killer eyeball appeals to me a lot with its irregular fungus-like collection of tentacles. The little root branches on "top" are especially cool to me, and sometimes they're the bottom, because they represent where the eyeball attaches to either floors or ceilings! In a few games, they're even encountered as parasites inside bigger monsters!
I used to admire the guidebook to the first two DQ Monsters games as a kid but never had the games themselves, and never got around to any other DQ titles. I just spent my whole life waiting for just the right one where I'd finally get to assemble my three favorites, then finally this new one comes out and has to be the first time these three took a vacation :( But, Dark Prince was at least nice enough to include exactly my next three favorites in the franchise. I went over them already in my DQM Dark Prince post but some people will see this post first so I will have to reintroduce them:
DROHL: droopy flappy membranous mollusk guys, honestly horrible looking in a great way. In 3d games it turns out their helmetlike head spirals in the back like a snail shell! Apparently they're meant to be troll-like beings.
LUNATICK: just a blue fleshy sac thing with gooey antennae, a bunch of tentacles (most of them segmented like worms!) and a little eyeball, perfect, no criticisms, also reminds me of what Berserk considers an "Incubus:"
(Don't worry, Berserk Incubus aren't sex monsters but monsters that give you nightmares and feed on the fear)
TAILEATER/MAD MOLLUSK: I love how pathetic their front face looks, and the whole shape is so pleasantly reminiscent of an abyssal sea cucumber of some kind.
SKULLROO/GUAARDVARK: I didn't even realize this was one of my top favorites until getting it in Dark Prince. It's an unpleasant wrinkly fat aardvark kangaroo thing that just always carries a human skull around. Its profile says they collect them and the one they carry is their favorite! A lot of slightly lower favorites were also left out however, none of these are in Dark Prince but are very high up there to me:
PYURO: what is this thing? I don't know! Different games have categorized it as an insect or a plant. It's a furball with five eyes encircling a butterfly proboscis, two little legs and a big huge ring of flower petals behind it. Very xenobiology.
TONGUELLA: it's kinda like a dumpy, hairless sloth with an aardvark tail with a mushed-in dog face and a giant gross tongue. I guess I just like foul moist beasts. I wish this was a real mammal we had in the world, I bet it'd smell terrible. Feels like a perfect counterpart to Guaardvark.
SLURPERON: it's one tiny pitcher plant with a giant tongue and then it has cool reptilian eyes at the bottom end. So simple and so rad! A fun way to stylize a pitcher plant monster without ripping off Victreebel.
SICKLER: is a little tiny mantis in a robe, like the Tonberry from Final Fantasy but a mantis
RAGIN' CONTAGION: a newer one, a gooey vaporous cyclops ghost that represents disease. In its first appearance as a boss in the series the English localizers decided it should talk like Yosemite Sam. Sure why not!
So I like the new game and it gave me some new favorites like Skellyfish and new appreciation for some others, but oddly it only has my very middle all-time faves

Hey tumblr! This is my first post here :) I'm Nikita, digital artist with passion to fantasy creatures and characters, DnD and Warhammer. Will be happy to see you and your feedback on my blog! Let's start with one of my favourite dragons that I was able to draw more than one year ago. Her name is Khunbish, a Hollow One who is, to explain it simply, possessed by the spirit of a dragon and came back to life because of it. Deepening this connection means she could one day tap into its power to temporarily turn into a dragon herself. The dragon is a Topaz Dragon. Yes, myĀ client wanted to pretty much redesign the classic Topaz Dragon from DnD canon because the wings are backwards in the official book and she can't look at them without imagining a dragon flying backwards.

Flavoured Artificer Concepts
Artificer is by FAR my favourite class in Dungeons and Dragons, primarily for how customisable they can be with regards to their flavour; because of the ability to cast through any tools you are proficient in, it gives a LOT of range to how your magic works. As such, I will put some ideas I have had to build unique Artificers.
An Artillerist that uses woodworking to carve totems; they are flavoured as a tribal shaman that summons the spirits of magical creatures to aid in battle. Their flamethrower turret conjures a dragon spirit to burn their foes, their protector turret calls the spirit of a unicorn to protect the virtuous, and their ballista invokes a manticore spirit to pepper distant foes with spikes. Their other spells can also be flavoured this way, such as Thunderwave being flavoured as an Aerosaur spirit emerging from a totem and flapping its wings to blow enemies away!
A Battlesmith that uses leatherworking to create a horrific stitched Frankenstein's monster for their steel defender. Every time they kill things, they skin the corpses to repair their hideous flesh monster. Or, if you prefer, you could stick with the shamanistic theme from the Artillerist entry, and use leatherworking to maintain the pelt of the first wolf you killed; its spirit inhabits that pelt, and defends you to this day!
An Alchemist that uses chef's tools to create supernaturally delicious food that cures illnesses and grants supernatural abilities. I have actually played this, he used brewers supplies to create caustic acidic drinks, had peppers so hot that it made your breath ignite to cast fire spells, and he would spray sticky toffee over the area for web. He would make food puns, and was named Guido Fiero.
An Armorer that uses jeweller's tools to create bling that imbues them with magical powers. A circlet that grants a force field, a ring that shoots lightning, a pair of bracelets that create thunderous shockwaves when brought together. Then, when you hit level 9, you can have distinct infusion tied to each one! A circlet or diadem or whatever for head armour, necklace for chest armour, anklets for boots, and bracelets or rings for the weapon! Perfect for a wealthy nobleman artificer who wants to broadcast their glamorous lifestyle.
There are loads of other things you can do with each tool proficiency, and it's a shame that the class is so easily pigeonholed into "The Tech Class". Not to say I don't like the gnomish tinker that creates fantastical and crazy gizmos to mimic magical effects. Hell, my character in the campaign I'm not DMing is exactly that, an autognome (Flavoured to look like a normal gnome in the face, so they appear normal when wearing their clothes) that woke up one day in a tinker's lab next to his deceased creator, and then left to try and find a purpose in the world. He has an insect motif, so all of his spells and things are flavoured as small clockwork insects he makes.
But the point is, while that's a staple of the Artificer class fantasy, there are loads of other ideas to flavour it! A calligrapher that writes arcane runes in the air, a potter with a terracotta soldier for a steel defender, a weaver that knits arcane circles, a painter whose drawings become magical effects, a glassblower whose glass figurines come to life, I can't think of one for cartographer's tools, but I bet there is a dope idea in there somewhere!
Even as I mentioned before with leatherworking, you can have the exact same class, the exact same subclass, and the exact same tool, and STILL have wildly different flavour! One is Doctor Frankenstein, the other is a mystical shaman with a spirit guide!
Anyway, that's today's rambling. I would also do a thing on subclasses the Artificer could have, given they only have four, but that's a whole other rant. Besides, this is already a thesis.
#dnd artificer#dungeons and dragons#dnd 5e#d&d#dnd#d&d 5e#I don't actually know what I'm meant to do for tags#I'm new here.#Still figuring it all out

Choose your favorite!
Time to fly!
Vote in the other polls!
What fans say:
How To Train Your Dragon:
The message was just nice. I have a lot of nostalgia for it. I used to be a huge dragon nerd as a kid and dragons just weren't that prevalent in media here, especially not as friendly figures. I still love HTTYD and it's sequels nowadays.
It was one of my favorite movies as a kid and one of the few movies I watched that wasn't a barbie movie, it's just really cool.
Best movie featuring dragons period. The pure wish fulfillment fantasy of having a highly intelligent fantasy creature companion that can fly and doesnāt mind being ridden like a horse, therefore also the best execution of the dragon rider trope in all of fiction. Extremely funny, adding to the comedy is the fact that only adults have Scottish accents and all the teens have an American accent. So good that even its tv show follow up was decent by extension. The bit where Hiccup is trying to earn Toothless' trust and they start to work together changed me on a fundamental level.
I LOVE IT SO MUCHSHJKBSKHGDK I have a bone dysplasia which causes some bones to be a little bit more hollow and whenever I would feel a pain in my top back, 8 year old me was like ''woah I'm growing wings its my time to fly like toothless'' lol and it was always a dream of mine to fly. Weirdly enough I could relate to toothless because the "not being able to fly but you should be" felt like an allegory to a lot of my life! It gave me hope when he WAS able to after the help of others + the care he always needed + that mechanic wing thing made me feel like with the right ''recipe'' could help me get better too. My favourite scene is the first flight!! I love the animation for it, it makes me feel like im flying through the clouds too! The soundtrack is amazing too, I still cry to the songs.
I could write an entire essay about how much I love this movie, it truly is one of the best films ever made to me. Utterly flawless on both a technical level and a story-telling level. Not to mention the score oh my GOD the score of this movie changed my life. There are too many scenes that are so impactful, but the Forbidden Friendship scene has to be one of the best. Test Drive too.
This is literally my favorite movie of all time. This movie got me through the worst times in my life. Itās about love and friendship and all that lovely goopy stuff and itās also fucking gorgeous.
THE cinematic masterpiece of our generation. On god.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece, the animation is pretty, the score is perfect, the relationship between Toothless and Hiccup is so sweet, Toothless is absolutely adorable. Definitely one of DreamWork's best films.
It's a beautifully animated movie about an unconventional viking boy named Hiccup finding his place in a world where dragons and vikings are constantly at odds, and how he changes the world around him. The dragon designs are unique and beautiful, and the vikings are larger than life and match the exaggerated setting.
Who on Tumblr DOESN'T want a dragon best friend I ask you. I would kill to have what Hiccup & Toothless have.
It does a brilliant job balancing tropes in a way that subverts and plays into them. There is so much in it for both adults and kids, it doesn't look like other animated films, it feels more grounded and in that realism it becomes so beautiful. The friendship in the film feels very real despite one of the characters being unable to talk! Forbidden Friendship scene is, in my opinion, the greatest scene in the history of cinema. The music, the lighting, the cinematography, the pacing, the emotions, it is practically perfect in every way. I could go on but I think ya get it.
God this movie defined my childhood and it's still so good when I rewatch it now. I'm guessing you'll have had this submitted a good few times bc it goddamn deserves it but. Hiccup is so relatable and !! dragons !! big cute dragons whose animation models are based on cats!! based fr
I have many fond childhood memories of this movie and in particular I loved how my cousin would "talk" for Toothless (cousin was babysitting us when we first watched the movie). Another thing is The SCORE. The music is iconic and awe inspiring to this day. That first time when Hiccup and Toothless fly together and it Works and the score absolutely goes HARD, I loose my breath every time. It's great. Also have you seen Toothless he's an adorable dragon and a badass, what's not to love?
Makes me cry every time because Hiccup and Toothless are such good friends and they love each other and end up as two halves of a boy dragon soulmate sandwich also the music is extremely good who doesnāt like dragons anyway.
It's the story of a beautiful friendship forming between a boy who doesn't fit in and a dragon who is the last of his kind. It's so cute. And it shows positive representation of disability, Hiccup and Toothless become disabled in ways that meaningfully parallel each other. Hiccup makes a prosthetic tail fin! And Toothless is just so cute!
The sound track is amazing
Honestly everything is phenomenal. It has a good use of comedy and an excellent story and character development. There are also countless beautiful and awe-inspiring scenes supported by an amazing score.
Up:
It is a very emotional movie about an old man learning to still enjoy life even though his wife died.
Such a beautiful film about loss

In keeping with my recommendation of Cruel Beauty, an actual good YA book, instead of š„hotfire garbageš„, aka Acotar, I thought I'd recommend another favourite of mine.
So, this time, I'm going to give an alternative recommendation to Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. This post is definitely not inspired by the release of Iron Flame.
Instead please try:
Fireborne by Rosaria Mundaā¤ļøāš„
This recommendation is especially for anyone who fell for the advertising when FW first came out, and it was sold as a YA adjacent military dragon fantasy with a slow burn romance.
So if that sounds interesting to you and you want to read an actually well written story, go check out Fireborne.
Fireborne is a YA fantasy, the 1st book of the Aurelian Cycle (a completed trilogy).
It follows its two main characters in a military academy through their training to become dragon riders.
I personally have pitched this series to irl friends as a genderswapped Anastasia (animated movie) with dragons.
The story takes place right after a big revolution. The people overthrew the dragon riding aristocracy.
Our main characters meet up in an orphanage, where they grow up together and end up joining the military academy to become dragon riders.
A lot of the story revolves around the questions that come up when a newly formed government is put through crisis.
All seen through the eyes of the protagonists, who as teenagers are old enough to know what life was like before the revolution, but young enough to have grown up in the new system.
The story does a great job of dealing with the struggles that come with uprooting old deeply ingrained systems of oppression while trying to build a newer fairer system.
The dragons are an integral part of this theme. Unlike FW, in which magical abilities and creatures are added without regard for how they might impact the world or themes, in Fireborne, the dragons are the embodiment of political and military power.
When the aristocracy ruled their oppressive regime, they were the only ones allowed to own and ride dragons. After their fall, the new regime allowed regular people the opportunity to become riders.
However, the number of dragons is still limited, and the new regime, comprised of former revolutionary leaders, want to keep the new riders under their control.
So, in the end, they still come up with a system that allows for abuse and oppression because access to power remains restricted to a chosen few, the dragon riders and those who control them, the newly established government.
These themes make for really complicated and nuanced conflicts without easy solutions. The sequels make a great job with further expanding on these themes.
The military elements also all make sense in this series, and they employ logical means to train their most valuable military assets, their dragon riders unlike FW.
It also features one of my favourite slow burn romances (at least in YA), the relationship has actually depth and tension, while also providing believable reasons why the characters can't just get together.
I'm actually really salty that Fourth Wing took off practically overnight, while Fireborne has been out for ages and has consistently remained underhyped. But I guess it isnāt spicy... š
So, for anyone who picked FW up without realising that it is actually just a very trashy smutty romance mascarading as a high fantasy, I highly recommend reading Fireborne which comes with the added perk of not being written by a known zionist.
#fireborne#flamefall#furysong#the aurelian cycle#rosaria munda#dragon books#book recommendations#fw is basically the new acotar#anti fourth wing#anti Rebecca Yarros#anti iron flame#fw is not just badly written#but also problematic in similar ways#the same weird white milk toast progressivism#with some weird undertones#like I know their is a rebellion in FW#but what are they even rebelling#and what is their millitary fighting#nothing makes sense#i guess this makes this post anti sjm as well#anti sjm#anti acotar

Fantasy Romance Recommendations Pt.1
I'm a big fan of Fantasy Romance books but I've noticed that a lot of recommendations lists have the same books over and over again. Nothing against Sarah J Maas, Jennifer Armentrout and Holly Black, but I have read their books already and I'm looking for new suggestions. And thus, I decided to make my own little list (with help from @housebaylor and @shirewalker). Maybe it will help someone somewhere. XD ***Some of the books listed here are not Romance novels officially but all have romance and have HFN or HEA endings Fantasy Romances The Fallen Empire Trilogy by Grace Draven The Kraelian Empire has ruled with an iron fist for centuries, its grip unyielding until the power of three women, and the men devoted to them, break it.
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden Vasya Petrovna is a young woman gifted with the Sight which allows her to see spirits who inhabits the world. The arrival of Christianity spells trouble for her and the world of the spirits at large. This story has her rebel against her fate as a woman in medieval Russia, go on a great adventure and meet amazing characters. Ā One of my favourite.
Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher A subversive take on Fairytales! After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marraāthe shy, convent-raised, third-born daughterāhas finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Ā It is called Le Cirque des RĆŖves, and it is only open at night. Celia and Marco's beautiful story of challenges, love and magic. Beautiful haunting magic. Radiance by Grace Draven Two people brought together by the trappings of duty and politics will discover they are destined for each other, even as the powers of a hostile kingdom scheme to tear them apart. The Bird and The Sword by Amy Harmon Magic is forbidden and gifted people are sentenced to death. Lark, a voiceless young woman, has a gift she must keep hidden. The day her mother was killed, she told lark's father she wouldnāt speak again, and she told him if Lark's died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky. A Fate of Wrath and Flame by K.A. Tucker Portal Fantasy! Gifted thief Romeria is transported into another world into the body of a treacherous princess. Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom. Only read the first book so far Married to Magic Trilogy by Elise Kova Shared Universe, Fantasy Romance, Stand Alone Novels About Young Women and their Unexpected Romances with Magical Men Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years sheās been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors sheās received. Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer and everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects. Only read the first book Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster Princess. Tribute. Sacrifice. Is she the one prophesied to unite two warring Fae courts? Or the one bound to destroy them? If you like S.J.Maas you might like this YA Fantasy Romances Uprooted by Naomi Novik Agnieszka lives in a quiet village bordering a corrupted Wood. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik Multiple POVs fairytale Miryem gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk--grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh--Miryem's fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered. Uprooted
āāāāā; my favourite kind of fantasy - classic fairytale with a side of 'dont worry about the details' and 'you gotta believe in the heart of the cards!'
Oh?? ššš
a really sharp, quick-witted, and willful female protagonist going 'fuck it!' every few chapters or so and doing something crazy (crazy fun) to drive the plot forward, off a new exciting cliff
a soft magic system that really shows off in the best light what makes soft magic systems so valid. its all about the metaphors!! you have to measure the chocolate chips with your heart!!!
nature is so magical and beautiful and deadly. specifically if you treat trees bad they will form a sentient vengeful forest to raze your civilization to the ground and salt the earth with your bodies
kasia. i love an atomic blonde unkillable bad bitch with the strongest queerplatonic vibes with her best friend from birth
a CLASSIC grumpy 'beastly' male love interest. he seals himself away in a lonely tower, makes girls hang out with him for 10 years at a time, and unironically calls himself 'the Dragon'. he even has the audacity to be offended that everyone thinks he's creepy!!!!!!
No.. āš¤¢š¤®
if you like having explanations for how magic works and any semblance of a hard magic system in your fantasy, put this book back. 'round here we operate on Vibes Only, babey!!
similarly, if your love language is words of affirmation and/or you think that fanfic-style romance plotlines should stay in fanfic, this romance is Not For You. this is not a judgment, only a warning
Summary: Agnieszka loves her home in her little village in the valley - you know, except for the evil forest simply known as the Wood that's been around as long as there have been people in the valley, with terrible creatures and sentient walking trees. And the century-old wizard known only as 'the Dragon' living in the tower overlooking their land, who takes a young woman every ten years to serve him. But what Agnieszka dreads the most is that her best friend, Kasia, will be chosen next, and that Agnieszka is helpless to save her. Until the day of the choosing, when the Dragon picks Agnieszka instead.
Concept: šššš I've never gotten along that well with a book blurb, but this one does its damn job - gives me enough plot premise to get me interested without giving it all away, and doesn't make me feel like I've been lied to once I start the book! some stories really don't do what they say on the tin, or take ages to get there at all, but Uprooted starts off exactly at the spot the blurb said it would - with a girl, in a valley, scared of a terrible wizard, about to be whisked away to a tower.
Execution: š„š„š„š„š„ This story is EXACTLY what it says it wants to be, down to the cadence of the prose - a Polish folklore-inspired fairytale. The rhythm of Novik's narration even fits right - one day I'll get the audiobook for this and get to hear it the way I read it in my head, like a grandmother's bedtime story with twists and eddies and crescendos at the all the right bits. I was in love with the aesthetic of every character, they fit perfectly into the backdrop of what this story was.
Personal Enjoyment: ā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤ This book aligns to my tastes much the same way An Enchantment of Ravens does, and shares of lot of the same elements without ever feeling derivative - smart girl meets magic boy, causes all kinds of irreversible political upheaval, and lives happily ever after being just as they are - a Girl with The Audacity. its a tale as old as time, and i'll hear it told just as often
Favourite Moment: you know its a good book when you really can't choose a favourite moment - one that comes to mind is agniezska choosing to save sarkan from being grafted onto the heart-tree in the Wood instead of setting fire to it. the 'fuck it!' energy agniezska brings to her moments of crisis is SO good, plus the motif of her always reaching out to sarkan to cast magic together - 'hey real quick, cast a spell with me while you're being pulled into an evil magic tree trying to twist your magic and life force against us. couldn't hurt, eh?' and then it WORKS
Favourite Character: now yall know i love a sarkan-esque character - pathetic wet cat men who are so offended by their own squishy feelings are a great time! and kasia is SO bad bitch extraordinaire, her and agnieszka's love for each other literally makes the plot go - every time, every time without hesitation she puts herself as the last thing standing between agnieszka and the Wood. but agniezska herself is really Something. the way she uses magic, her connection with nature and her refusal to be anything else than what she is - a grubby young woman who wields kindness as her weapon against the world, who holds onto her humanity with both hands and teeth - she shapes this fairytale to be the story she wants it to be, one of connection and empathy. and im still thinking about her introducing the lord of the whole valley to her mother š¤£ power move!!
#uprooted#naomi novik#books#book review#booklover#bookblr#reading#sarkan's refusal to bind himself to the valley is SO. one day agnieszka will stop for breath mid-bickering and really come to grips with#unpacking why he was so unokay with tying himself to the land. an orphan with incredible magical ability growing up surrounded by#power-hungry nobles? yeah that guy has trust and commitment issues. need agnieszka to fuck that out of him#i mean OF COURSE teach him that the valley is a home and not a cage (that no one will ever force him to stay not even her#that he can come and go as he pleases and still be theirs) and its ok to be tied to the people that love you and vice versa etc etc etc.#but also like. he deserves to be dommed into feeling safe enough to put down roots. as a treat.#anyway kasia x agnieszka x sarkan throuple with agnieszka as the homing beacon and kasia + sarkan as the migrating birds always circling#always knowing the way back home
