I don’t think I’ve ever written down all of my sexuality HC’s for the cast, have I.

I think most of the characters are straight in canon. with a few obvious exceptions like Kusuo. I’ll put ‘em under a cut.

basically: almost everyone is straight, Saiki, Akechi, Hairo and Mera come across as ace to me. I’m not entirely sure about Kusuo. He repeatedly states in canon that he doesn’t get romance, hinting ace/aro. Which is the interpretation I think I prefer. His obsession with Satou and his normalcy may push past platonic into crush territory, though. Akechi… we don’t get any evidence, really. But it’s my best guess that he’s not really too interested in dating. Hairo is simply not interested in dating at all. Mera is occupied with other things, but she shows 0 romantic interest in anyone. I think signs point to Kuusuke being asexual, but it’s hard to tell because of his superiority complex. He could very well be gay but that’s an interpretation I obviously don’t like because of the implications.

Aiura is definitely bisexual, based off of how she reacted to seeing Teruhashi, and Takashi is the stereotypical homophobe bully who’s actually repressing his own feelings. This is mostly based on the fact that I think it would be entertaining if true. The only characters I’d put money on being gay is Rifuta. I feel like Rifuta’s crush on Makoto thing was thrown in last minute just because otherwise it was undeniable that she’s gay.

I’d have given actual money for lesbian Teruhashi, because ImuTeru and also hell yeah, Kusuo & Teruhashi friendship and solidarity would be great.

basically, I think canon sinks every single potential ship. And I think that is most excellent and iconic of Mr. Aso.

JINJER Announces Fall 2024 North American Tour With HANABIE And BORN OF OSIRIS

Ukrainian modern metallers JINJER will embark on a North American tour in the fall. Support on the trek will come from fast-rising Japanese metalcore unit HANABIE and progressive metalcore mainstays BORN OF OSIRIS.

As JINJER is currently in the studio recording its fifth studio album, fans can expect to hear a handful of brand new, never-before-heard tracks on the tour.

The 18-date tour will kick off on September 20 at in Sayreville, New Jersey and will include a couple of Canadian shows (in Toronto and Montreal) before wrapping up on October 13 at Sacramento, California's Aftershock festival.

In addition to Aftershock, the tour will also see JINJER performing at festivals such as Metal Injection Festival, Louder Than Life and the return of the mighty Mayhem festival.

Various ticket presales via Citi, Ticketmaster, Live Nation and more begin today, with general public on-sale beginning this Friday, June 14 at 10:00 a.m. local time.

JINJER comments on returning to North America: "It's finally time for some huge announcements: We're stoked to report that this September, JINJER will return to North America with not only two absolutely sick supports: HANABIE and BORN OF OSIRIS! During an appearance on a recent episode of Knotfest's "She's With The Band", the show hosted by Tori Kravitz, JINJER vocalist Tatiana Shmailyuk spoke about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to the band's 2021 album "Wallflowers". Tatiana said: "My purpose is just to write lyrics and sing them. I'm so behind right now with the writing lyrics. And I warned my guys. We were at least to get a really rough draft, rough sketch or a demo of one song, like maybe first single from the new album, at least get this, but nope. [Stress and creativity don't] work with me. Well, but when the deadline's coming, and everybody knows that — I've been talking, like, every single time we release a new album, I say that, I say this — deadlines push me. So I just have to write, so I get this stream of consciousness, basically. I write down whatever the bullshit is in my head. And then you build it. At least you have to have bricks to build a poem or whatever it is, just lyrics."

Regarding the musical direction of the new JINJER material, Tatiana said: "It's gonna be different, first of all, because I feel that the music differs a lot. And to my mind, the whole — I won't say how many songs are there; I guess 12 or even 15; let's say 13; I don't remember — but they all have… not all of them, but half of them, at least, they have a similarity in them. They're similar to each other or they remind me. They have this concept within — without any lyrics, they still sound like they belong to one box. They are a set of songs. And I already think about all the… I'm not even thinking about like the lyrics — I think about the topics and stuff, but I think about the booklet or the cover or even the music videos and what I'm gonna wear there. And it has a certain flavor to me that… I feel like it has this flavor of 19th century. It's very romanticism from the 19th century. If you listen to it, you will think, 'Oh.' You know, when you listen to MUSE, you feel he was inspired by a lot of classical composers — obviously. So our new music has this flavor. And I'm so excited."

JINJER released its first official live DVD/Blu-ray, "Live In Los Angeles", on May 17 via Napalm Records. Recorded and filmed on December 22, 2022 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, this offering is intended to celebrate not only getting through the last few years in one piece, but also the band's 15-year career.

"Live In Los Angeles" was a spontaneous decision by the band, recorded as raw as possible, to emphasize the passion that can come from a live show. This release is an explosive mixture of JINJER's discography — featuring fan favorites like "Sit Stay Roll Over", "Home Back" and the game-changing "Pisces". The live album contains 16 songs in various audio formats, with some strictly limited: the deluxe digipack features not only a DVD, but also two more songs, "Wallflower" and "Disclosure!", recorded in Paris in 2023.

The Pull List

In which I list what fanfics I am working on so that you know what to expect. This post is updated as necessary; its post date reflects when it was last updated. I write my stories in Scrivener, and am currently posting exclusively on FanFiction.Net and Archive of Our Own.

All the Corners That Are Left is my first published Batman fic, and I was bowled over by the positive feedback I received. To show my thanks (other than by replying to the comments), I am tentatively working on a sequel fic focusing more on Jason. Its working title is A Mask of Mine, but time will tell whether or not that sticks.

Family Crisis is a canon divergent story that changes the end of the War Games crossover to keep the Batfamily together, and also ties up some loose ends. It will be novel length and I will begin posting chapters weekly once I have finished writing it (13 chapters are done, out of about 23 drafted). Here is the summary:

At the close of the gang war, Batman is the target of an attempted deception concerning the life of his former protégé Stephanie Brown, and suddenly nothing is as important as his family. While Dick battles trauma, Tim struggles with grief, Cassandra searches for belonging and Steph recovers from assault, Bruce faces the return of ghosts from his own past and psyche.

I recently watched the Road to Avonlea episode “Thursday’s Child” and am heavily considering writing a Cecily POV fic for it. If it comes to fruition, it will probably be a one-off (the product of an itch that needed to be scratched). Most fandoms I’ve only written one or two fics for – it just seems to be the way I roll.

I won NaNoWriMo! And then immediately began my industry placement while also finishing off my degree, so time is still tight.

I’m mainly a lurker there, but I’m also a member of Holy Server B@man on Discord, and I’m taking part in their upcoming fic exchange, how fun! So, there will be a new Batfam fic from me in early January, though I won’t be revealed as the author until later.

Lastly, I’m doing some beta reading for a story based on the 2004 Phantom of the Opera movie. Here’s the link on FF.net, and the link on AO3.

Finally Healthy Enough to Compete on the World Stage, Embiid Chooses USA

Joel Embiid, 29, never seemed destined for international basketball competition. Not that the 7-foot Cameroon native wasn’t capable of playing. Embiid had difficulty staying on the court for his NBA commitment and didn’t want to risk more mileage on his tires.

But times change. Embiid has citizenship in Cameroon and became a citizen of France and the United States in 2022. When it came to decision time for the 2024 Paris Olympic cycle, Embiid decided to play for his adopted home country, the United States. Embiid will have to stay healthy during the upcoming NBA season, but that is a concern for every player.

There is a lot that Embiid can still accomplish in basketball. He hasn’t won an NBA Championship yet and hasn’t come close to playing in one. On the international level, Embiid hasn’t even appeared. If Embiid can stay healthy, there will be plenty of options for Embiid to make waves before he retires.

Embiid Came to the United States at 16

Embiid wouldn’t have considered a basketball career a real possibility as a child. He didn’t even play the sport until he was 15. Embiid dreamed of playing professional volleyball in Europe but pivoted to basketball at age 15. Playing at a camp in Yaounde, Cameroon, he was discovered by NBA player Luc Mbah a Moute.

Mbah a Moute helped mentor Embiid and encouraged him to move to the United States. Embiid enrolled at Montverde Academy in Florida. He would later transfer to another school to get more playing time. Embiid helped The Rock School in Gainesville win a state championship, and he would sign to play for Kansas in college.

Embiid’s size made him attractive to colleges all over the United States. Landing with the Jayhawks allowed him to play with top talent.

Why Is Embiid Eligible for Nation Switch?

Since Embiid had never played for Cameroon, he could play with another country. Embiid’s decision not to play with Cameroon stemmed partly from the fact there was nothing guaranteed. Cameroon is one of 24 teams playing for four spots to gain access to the Olympic tournament.

Throughout Cameroon’s basketball history, it hasn’t notched many major accomplishments. Cameroon has never won the African championship but did finish runner-up in 2007 and in fourth place in 2009. During Cameroon’s last attempt to win the African championship, they placed 16th and lost all three games at the tournament.

Injury Issues Limited Time with Jayhawks

Kansas didn’t get much time with Embiid. The Jayhawks were able to pair him with future NBA champion Andrew Wiggins. Embiid scored 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. A stress fracture in his back ended his freshman season in March. The Jayhawks went on to lose in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Embiid declared for the NBA Draft in April of 2014. In June of that year, he had surgery on his foot, ensuring his start to his professional career would be delayed. That delay would last much longer than what many keeping tabs on up-to-date sports news would have anticipated.

Embiid Flirts with Cameroon, Gets on Court With 76ers

The foot injury Embiid got surgery on would last for two years. Embiid would miss his first two seasons with the Sixers entirely. Embiid did get on the court during the 2016-17 season, averaging 20.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

In 2017, Embiid was listed on the preliminary roster of AfroBasket for Cameroon. Embiid ultimately declined the invitation. He eventually decided to focus on his NBA career while he was making up his mind about international basketball.

Embiid scored 20 or more points per game in all of his seasons in the league. He was named MVP of the 2022-23 season. The most games Embiid has played as a professional was 68 during the 2021-22 season. During the 2022-23 season, Embiid was chosen as the NBA’s MVP.

Team USA Needs a Spark

The recent FIBA basketball World Cup saw the United States not medal for the second straight tournament. It’s the first time that has happened since 1970. The Americans needed to improve at the tournament in size and defense. Embiid can provide that.

Seeing Team USA lose has also inspired many veteran NBA players to offer their services for the 2024 Olympics team. Steph Curry and LeBron James have spoken publicly and said they want to be involved. James is a multiple-time gold medalist, while Curry would like to add the championship to his resume.

Embiid wanted to join the team so his son Arthur, 3, could see him represent his country. The United States has a long history of success in men’s basketball at the Olympics. The USA has won 16 times, earning a win over France in the finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Flirting With France

Embiid spent time in France as a child and always loved the country. When looking for a home for international basketball, Embiid seriously looked at the European nation. French fans may have even thought there was a chance he might commit to them. Embiid was offered French citizenship, and he was accepted in 2022.

France has made a strong push on the international scene with basketball. Recent sports updates show the rest of the world has started to catch up to the United States. France beat the United States during the group stage at the Olympics but lost to the Americans in a rematch in the final.

When Embiid gained citizenship, France hoped to pair him with Rudy Gobert and youngster Victor Wembanyama. The French had given Embiid citizenship as an alien whose “naturalization is of exceptional interest.” While the French were disappointed Embiid went in a different direction, giving him citizenship was worth the risk. For all the latest MLB, NBA, NFL, and Soccer News, stay up to date on BlackSportsDigest.

Synopsis

Mimi Milan doesn't have normal dreams, instead, she can dream with people she knows and discover their true faces, without filters. This is how she knows that no one is to be trusted because everyone always has ulterior motives, even her family.

But her dreams also have a dark secret. If she gets injured in them, her injuries remain on her body when she awakens and she has to deal with them regardless of severity.

When her dreams start to turn violent, can Mimi find a safe way out?

Writing Process

How it all started?

I have no idea.

No! For real. I know why it started, but how? I’m not really sure.

Okay, then.

WHY it all started?

I needed an outlet for all the toxic thoughts I was having, to overcome some bad habits to be free to work on my mental health (though I didn't know that part was coming at that moment), and I saw that an author –I don't even remember who was– said that their writing was a healing process.

And I thought, "Why can't be the same for me?".

It has been years since then, considering that I started the very first draft in March 2021, according to the date of the document I have.

[I need a parenthesis here to let you all know that my year starts on December 20th and finishes on December 19th, I don't track my years with the world year (like, 2023 right now) but my year (24 right now), so in my registers there will be two Decembers, one at the end of the year that goes from the 1st to the 19th, and the other starting the next year on the 20th and until the 31st.

Instead of using the world year (like 2021 before), I will be using my year (22 in that case), but I will do my best to also put the world date so we're on the same page 💙.]

I also found that the very first register (before then I just tracked some lousy, approximated words, and just since, like, three months prior) is from March 11, 2021, of 545 words. After that, it seems I started writing regularly (more on than off) since April (18.4k words, 12.5k in May, 11.8k in June, 26.5k in July, 2k in August, 9.5k in September, and 8.5k in December).

The details of the second draft say that I started it in December 2021, so pretty sure that 8.5k are from it. There is also proof that I started posting the story on Wattpad and Inkspired, I don't know which version (seems logical that the first one but who knows), in the same month.

During my 23 (December 20, 2021 - December 19, 2022), the monthly word count was like: 2.3k in December 2021, 7.6k in February, 6.8k in March, 5.7k in April, 8k in May, 2.2k in June, 4.9k in August, 8.7k in September, 15.3k in October, 19.7k in November, and 53 words in December. If it seems like this year I wrote way lower, it was because I was not only writing on Mimi and my word count limit suffered a decline due to my health. It's still pretty limited, but I continue writing anyway.

I also started the third draft in May 2022.

I have seen a lot of writers recommending finishing earlier drafts before going to the next, but, eh, I take recommendations with a grain of salt. I felt I had to stop where I did, so for that there are three unfinished drafts before I finally started having a neat process register.

Before starting the next (and current) draft, I did an outline, in October 2022 exactly (that was the 15.3k words). It contains twenty chapters with four major points each. It's not tight, I can add and remove, divide them at will, but that was everything I was able to think about, based on what I knew of the story from the three previous drafts, at that moment.

Then, in November 2022, with the NaNoWriMo main event, I started the fourth draft, with the started words that I shared above.

Now, in my year 24 (December 20, 2022 - December 19, 2023), the word count is going like: 3.7k in December 2022, 11.5k in January, 18.4k in February, 15.9k in March, and updating monthly.

As I told a bit earlier, I'm having a better, neat process register of my writing. I'm also devoted to this story as my main project until I finish it, but all those words aren't entirely for the main story; I'm also counting extra scenes, outside activities (like the ones from Tumblr), and whatever I add to my Details (worldbuilding, characters, etc) document.

Drafting Progress: around 23%.

Writing Schedule

What is this?

As I told above, the outline contains twenty (20) chapters with four (4) major points each, which are eighty (80) scenes, but as the writing goes on, I have been dividing some major points into a few more scenes, actually having eighty-eight (88) scenes and counting. Not really knowing my writing flow, I decided to try a weekly approach and see how it went, so I scheduled one scene a week starting on January 1st, 2023.

As I started the fourth draft right away in November, the first six weeks went by revising and editing the first six scenes. Then, the real work started.

To today day (May 15th, 2023), I got behind twice in my own schedule: in the 3rd Chapter, 2nd Major Point (scenes 16 and 17) for five days, and in the 4th Chapter, 2nd Major Point (scenes 21 and 22) for thirty-seven days (still counting).

Below you will be able to see the schedule, the original one had the last scene finishing on July 13th, 2024, but I changed the dates due to the last delay.

We are happy to announce that Inception Reverse Bang is coming back in Fall 2021!

A Reverse Bang is a fandom event where artists and writers create a joint project. Art is created first and then an accompanying story is written, inspired by that art piece. And this one is for our very much beloved ‘Inception’.

The event spans Autumn 2021. Sign-ups open September 10, artists start working from mid-September and writers start in late October with the collective reveal date on Dec 2.

What exactly is a Reverse Bang?

A Reverse Bang is an event in which an artist creates a work of art and an author claims it to create a fic inspired by the art. 

Do I have to join DW/Discord/Tumblr/Other to participate?

Short answer - no. The only place you *need* to have an account is AO3 for authors for publishing purposes (let us know if we can help with that). We use multiple platforms for the bang and we ask for usernames just to help partners get in touch with each other (though it is up to the two of you to work out how you will communicate). Mods will always contact you via email (in addition to blog posts).

Can I be a pinch hitter or a beta?

We’d love to have you! Head on over to our sign up form and let us know.

Can two people work on a fic?

Yes, we allow collaborations between authors so long as everyone signs up officially.

How many pieces of art can we submit?

We recommend pacing yourselves but will happily accept up to two pieces of artwork.

Can the story be a sequel to a story?

Yes, but we ask that the story be able to stand on its own, in other words, the readers will not have to read the other story/stories to be able to understand what is going on in this installment.

Can I use a work created for commission/auction/patreon reward etc for this event?

We do ask that you do not tie your Reverse Bang fic in with any of the above. While we are supportive of people trying to help or to make money, we are being hosted by AO3 and we must be careful in regards to the legality of money changing hands for these works.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, poet, artist, activist and founder of San Francisco’s famous City Lights Bookstore, who has died aged 101 of interstitial lung disease, was the least “beat” of the Beat Generation. In addition to a political commitment that blended anarchism and ecology – he loathed the motor car, calling it “the infernal combustion engine” – he had an instinctive business sense, founded on the philosophy of small is beautiful. City Lights, which he started in partnership with the magazine editor Peter Martin in the early 1950s, is still among the most welcoming of shops, with its tables and chairs, sheaves of magazines, and signs saying: “Pick a book, sit down, and read.”

Ferlinghetti discouraged interviewers and seekers of personal information. “If I had some biographical questionnaire to answer, I would always make something up,” he once said. Different reference books give different dates of birth, and one published story had it that he wrote his doctoral dissertation on the place of the pissoir in French literature. For many years, he listed his dog, Homer, as City Lights’ publicity and public relations officer. The poet recalled that Homer Ferlinghetti received regular mail, but that his public relations career stalled when he peed against a policeman’s leg. For this act of citizenship, he was immortalised by his master in the poem Dog.

Perhaps the facts made Ferlinghetti uncomfortable. He was born Lawrence Monsanto Ferling in Yonkers, New York, to a French mother, Albertine Mendes-Monsanto, and an Italian father, Carlo Ferlinghetti, an auctioneer, who had shortened the family name to Ferling. His parents were unable to care for him, however (sometimes Ferlinghetti said his father had died before his birth, sometimes after), and he was rescued by an aunt, Emily Monsanto. She took him to France, where they lived for his first six years. Returning to the US, Emily was employed as a governess by a family called Lawrence, a branch of the one that founded Sarah Lawrence College. “Then she left me there,” Ferlinghetti told an interviewer in 1978. “She just disappeared one day, and that family brought me up.”

His education was extensive. In the early 1940s, he attended the University of North Carolina, where a professor introduced him to the vernacular voice in poetry. This was a revelation: you didn’t have to sound like TS Eliot to write a poem. After wartime naval service had taken him back to Europe, Ferlinghetti enrolled at the Sorbonne, studying French literature while translating poets and novelists in his spare time. One day in a restaurant, he noticed that the paper tablecloth had a poem written on it, and that it was signed “Jacques Prévert”. He took the tablecloth with him as he left the restaurant, and some years later translated the poems in Prévert’s Paroles, eventually published, under the original title, by his own City Lights Books.

Back in New York again in 1946, Ferlinghetti went to Columbia University, preparing a thesis on Ruskin and Turner. He just missed meeting Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, who by then had either been banned from (Ginsberg) or had dropped out of (Kerouac) the university. Ferlinghetti did not team up with the Beats until eight years later, in San Francisco.

Drawn to Paris once more at the end of the 1940s, he met George Whitman, proprietor of the English-language bookshop opposite Notre Dame, which was first known as Le Mistral and is now Shakespeare and Company. Ferlinghetti looked to Whitman as an example when he opened City Lights Bookstore in 1953. It was the first all-paperback bookshop in the US, and, as Ferlinghetti said, “Once we opened, we just couldn’t get the doors closed.” He ran the place more in the spirit of public service than for profit, and by the 70s was content to live on his book royalties and plough the takings at the counter back into the shop.

Two years after starting City Lights, Ferlinghetti published his own collection of poems, Pictures of the Gone World, as No 1 in the Pocket Poets series, little four by five-inch, black-and-white paperbacks, which continue to appear today – one of the most popular literary lists of modern times. It was at this stage that he reverted to the original family name, Ferlinghetti. The next two Pocket Poets after Ferlinghetti were Kenneth Rexroth and Kenneth Patchen – as a result, both were drafted as “fathers of the Beat Generation”, somewhat to their displeasure – but it was the fourth in the series that ensured the list’s success. And for that, as Ferlinghetti was quick to point out, they had to thank the San Francisco police department.

The book was Howl and Other Poems, by Allen Ginsberg. Ferlinghetti had heard Ginsberg read the title poem at an event at the Six Gallery, San Francisco, in October 1955. On returning home, he sent the poet a message that consciously echoed the famous letter from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Walt Whitman after Emerson had read Whitman’s Leaves of Grass: “I greet you at the beginning of a great career.” The proprietor of City Lights added: “When do I get the manuscript?”

The book was published the following year, in an edition of 1,000 copies. However, after a failed attempt by the police to prosecute the bookseller for peddling obscene material, the reprints could not come fast enough. Ferlinghetti joked that the police “took over the advertising account and did a much better job”. Howl remains the bedrock of City Lights’ success as a publishing concern. It has now gone through well over 50 reprints, often more than one a year.

Ferlinghetti’s own poetry is irreverent, cajoling, casual and loose-limbed, sometimes excessively so. His models were Whitman and William Carlos Williams. In partnership with Rexroth, he took part in many poetry and jazz events on the West Coast, and the two made a record together. Ferlinghetti later became disillusioned with the poetry and jazz combination – “The poet ended up sounding like he was hawking fish from a street corner,” he said.

His verse on the page, though, suggests a spoken origin, as in his poem Underwear:

Underwear controls everything in the end Take foundation garments for instance They are really fascist forms of underground government ….

In addition to his many collections of verse, including A Coney Island of the Mind (1958), The Secret Meaning of Things (1969) and Endless Life (1981), Ferlinghetti wrote two novels: Love in the Days of Rage (1988), which is set during the student revolt of 1968 in Paris, and Her (1960), a more experimental work, a classic “poet’s novel”.

On one of his transatlantic voyages, Ferlinghetti met Selden Kirby-Smith (known as Kirby), whom he had had a passing acquaintance with at Columbia. They married in 1951 and had two children, Julie and Lorenzo, but were divorced in 1976.

In 1971, Nancy Peters, a former librarian at the Library of Congress, joined the company, and as time went on played a larger part in running the business, leaving Ferlinghetti to his creative work. She served as executive director from 1984 until 2007, and then continued to be involved as a co-owner of the business.

Ferlinghetti also had a serious interest in painting, and in 1990 the University of California mounted a retrospective. Many poems feature the names of painters, or employ a self-consciously “painterly” style, such as Short Story in a Painting of Gustav Klimt or Returning to Paris with Pissarro.

Ferlinghetti disliked being associated with the Beats, though he benefited from it, and, despite his love of Ginsberg, was apt to lament the commercialisation of the Beat Generation. Ginsberg, he said, “fabricated the whole thing out of his imagination”. But, happily contradicting himself, he could add, as late as 1996, “It’s still the only rebellion around.”

A collection of the correspondence between Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg was published in 2015, under the title I Greet You at the Beginning of a Great Career. At the same time, a selection of his travel journals appeared, Writing Across Landscapes.

Ferlinghetti expressed disappointment in other Beat writers for their unstructured approach to politics. He decided to travel to Cuba to see the Castro regime for himself and later wrote One Thousand Words for Fidel Castro, which ends, “Fidel … I give you my sprig of laurel.” Another political poem evoked a surrealistic scene by Goya, showing “freeways 50 lanes wide”, with “fewer tumbrils / but more maimed citizens / in painted cars”. In 2012 he declined to accept an award from the Hungarian Pen club, in protest at the policies of prime minister Viktor Orbán.

City Lights, open till midnight seven days a week, was Ferlinghetti’s way of infusing the spirit of resistance peacefully into the streets of San Francisco.

With Peters, he wrote a Literary Guide to San Francisco (1980), and in 1988 was responsible for the renaming of 10 streets after writers associated with the city, including Jack Kerouac Alley, partly composed of City Lights’ back wall. In 1994, he himself was similarly honoured by Via Ferlinghetti, the first time a street has been named after a living writer in the history of the city.

He is survived by his children and three grandchildren.

how does it work when an author has multiple 2 book deals with different publishers (for different genres/age groups)? would the deadlines for book 2 be longer to accommodate the deals that came later? or if the author is a fast writer, could both books 1 and 2 from each publisher come out around the same period?

Haha um - sounds v complicated! I'd say, that's a case-by-case, and something to strategize about with your agent.

But basically: It's highly unlikely that you would sell two or more multi-book deals with different publishers at the exact same moment.

A much more likely scenario:

It's spring/summer 2021. You sell a two-book deal to Publisher A for two MG books. Your due dates are October 1, 2021 for book 1, to be published in Fall 2022, and October 1, 2022 for book 2, to be published in Fall 2023.

Once book 1 is well under way or already turned in, ie, some months later, let's say in November of 2021, you sell a two-book deal to Publisher B for two YA novels. You already know that you have the existing deadlines -- your Summer and Fall of 2022 are spoken for with doing Book 2 and publishing MG book 1, and your Fall of 2023 is spoken for with publishing/promoting chapter book 2.

So, bearing that in mind - clearly you won't want to publish these books in the Fall if you can help it. Your contracts both probably have some kind of non-compete clause anyway, and also it's a pain in the nuts to try and promote multiple books at once. (It CAN happen that that's the only way - but it is hardly the IDEAL way).

So, your agent would discuss with the editor for YA what the ideal publishing schedule would be. Maybe the YA book 1 is due in April of 2022, to be published in Spring 2023. And YA book 2 is due in April of 2022, to be published in Spring 2024.

So now your schedule looks something like this -- remember that it is now late 2021, and the first MG book is already turned in and done:

WINTER/SPRING 2021-22: Finish revising YA book 1, turn it in in April, start drafting MG book 2

SUMMER/FALL 2022: Draft and revise MG Book 2, turn in revised book in October - Promote MG book 1, which has just been released.

FALL/WINTER 2022: Draft YA book 2

SPRING 2023: Revise YA book 2, turn it in in April - Promote YA book 1, which has just been released.

FALL 2023: Promote MG Book 2, which has just been released

SPRING 2024: Promote YA book 2, which has just been released.

If you want to sell another MG to Publisher A, a good time to do so would probably be in Fall/Winter 2022, when the first book is already out and you have completed work on MG book 2. Then that one would get slotted in easily to be due in Fall 2023, to pub in Fall 2024. A good time to sell YA book 3 to Publisher B would similarly be in Spring/Summer 2023, after Book 1 is out and Book 2 is done. And so on. Get it?

Now - if you want to at some point in all this add YET ANOTHER type of book / publisher, like say you now also want to write Picture Books, and publish them with Publisher C, you and your agent would have to look at your schedule and see what makes sense in terms of due dates and what not.

If your response to all this is "OMG JENN THAT IS WAY TOO COMPLICATED HOW COULD I EVER WRITE BOOKS THAT FAST AND PROMOTE OTHER BOOKS AT THE SAME TIME AHHHH???!?!!!" -- then I would HIGHLY suggest you not sell multiple multi-book deals to different publishers. Problem solved!

DCJ Hiatus Indulgence is back!

DCJ Hiatus Indulgence Finale: Covid Edition

General Challenge Info: DCJ Hiatus Indulgence Finale: Covid Edition The show that inspired this ship, Supernatural, is coming to a close. Again. I know we said this before but we’re for real this time! (We hope anyway.) This will be the final final DCJ Hiatus Indulgence challenge. So for this, DCJ Hiatus Indulgence Finale: Covid Edition, we want to see Trapped Together fics, inspired by 2020 the year of Quarantine.  

Rules

Your story must have the three of them trapped together. It does not have to be a quarantine fic, they do not have to be the only ones but they do have to be together by the end of the fic in some way like, as a thurple. Cause, ya know, ot3.  

Your art must depict the three of them in a situation where they are trapped together. Let’s face it, may be hard to show but we know you got this. You’re awesome that way.

Writers must submit stories that are at least 1k and artists must submit at least one piece of art.

Main ship has to be Dean/Cas/Jimmy

There can be other ships but end goal has to be DCJ Any other side pairings are fine No adding to the ship. Not this time.

No RPF or RPS.

All major warnings must be tagged in your summary, and cannot be subsequently changed.

Major warnings are: Rape/Non Con, Dub Con, Underage, Major Character Death, Graphic Depictions of Violence; Suicide/Self-harm, Torture, Bestiality, Addiction

Underage must be tagged

No extreme underage in sexual situations (under 13) No extreme age gaps if one of the characters is underage (no 14 years olds with 28 year olds for example) Mentions of past underage abuse/involvement is acceptable as long as there is none shown “on screen” No art may depict minors being sexualized or in sexual situations.

No crossovers allowed for this final final challenge.

Must be an original work not posted anywhere else before posting to this challenge. It’s fine if you started writing the work before the challenge began, as long as it’s never been shared publicly.

You should be creating a brand new story and not part something that’s part of a series. Once the challenge is done you can turn your story into a series (it’s your work after all!), but the work you submit must be complete and able to stand on its own at posting time.

This is not a collaborative project. There are no art claims. You can sign up as an author or an artist and you can find other authors or artists to work with if you wish, but that isn’t a requirement of this challenge.
