The Historian: Part One, Chapter 1.
A little housekeeping. The Historian has several narrators, all, but the teenaged narrator in the 1972 parts, are named. So for ease, I will call her N, instead of the nameless narrator. Also, these posts will contain spoilers.
Summary:
How these papers have been placed in sequence will be made manifest in the reading of them. All needless matters have been eliminated, so that a history almost at variance with the possibilities of later-day belief may stand forth as simple fact. There is throughout no statement of past things wherein memory may err, for all the records chosen are exactly contemporary, given from the standpoints and within the range of knowledge of those who made them.
Part One starts with this quote from Dracula, by Bram Stoker. It reinforces the idea that The Historian is a true account, a collection of papers that tells a story that has really happened.
In chapter 1 we learn a bit about N. She's 16 and lives with her diplomat father in Amsterdam. Her mother died as a baby, and she lives a very sheltered life, mostly occupied with her studies. At this point N thinks her father’s effort to shield her is because he is her only parent. But the reader may wonder if it’s not to protect her from something. One day she finds a book, and collection of letters in her father’s library. N doesn’t tell us what she finds in the book that captivates her, and she only reads a little from the first letter before she puts it away, but it’s a rather sinister paragraph:
My dear and unfortunate successor:
It is with regret that I imagine you, whoever you are, reading the account I must put down here. The regret is partly for myself – because I will surely be at least in trouble, maybe dead, or perhaps worse, if this is in your hands. But my regret is also for you, my yet-unknown friend, because only by someone who needs such vile information will this letter someday be read. If you are not my successor in some other sense, you will soon be my heir – and I feel sorrow at bequeathing to another human being my own, perhaps unbelievable, experience of evil. Why I myself inherited it I don’t know, but I hope to discover that fact, eventually – perhaps in the course of writing to you or perhaps in the course of further events…
Instead of asking her father about her find at once, N begs to follow him on his next diplomatic journey, something she has so far never been allowed to. He agrees, and she accompanies him to a Yugoslavian city she calls Emona. Well there, N tells her father what she has found, and now it is revealed that the book contained the printed image of a dragon, and she asks him to tell her about it, which he reluctantly agrees to do.
The real name of Emona is Ljublana, which today is the capital of Slovenia. N points out this is where the story starts, but up until this re-read I could never understand why Kostova chose this particular place. Not until this time, did I notice that N and her father cross a bridge, guarded by bronze dragons. The Dragon Bridge, Zmajski most, was built in 1901, and as you can see from the picture, the dragons are impressive. By walking over it, N truly walks into the start of this story, where the motif of the dragon will return again, and again. Ljubljana also has a dragon on the city’s coat of arms, referring to a legend that this is the place where the Greek hero Jason slayed the dragon. Or, possibly, it’s about the legend of St. George and the dragon. Either way, Ljubljana is a city of dragons, and I find it very fitting to start a book about Dracula here.

2022 Year in Review Tag!
thanks so much @magic-is-something-we-create i feel like this year has been a huge jumble ngl but let’s be positive about it lol :’)
also this is just a general list not top 5 cuz i didn’t do much this year
5 movies i watched
in terms of new movies:
american psycho — i actually enjoyed this movie a lot but it’s genuinely bc this movie is much funnier than i thought it would be. all deeper meanings and commentary aside patrick bateman is a fucking specimen
kwaidan — obsessed with this movie ngl. the first three segments are top tier (kurokami, yukionna & HOICHI THE EARLESS ESPECIALLY IF YOU WATCH NO OTHER PART PLEASE WATCH THIS ONE I CANNOT PRAISE IT ENOUGH). however the last one was super lackluster in comparison to the other three. tbh i feel like if the last one was the first one it would be a really good progression from okay to the best bc you really can’t follow hoichi the earless with anything imo.
tales from crypt (1972) — watched a lot of old horror this year (bc my partner is a horror movie buff and has been getting me into them for awhile now lolol) but this movie was a lot of fun! i want more ridiculous anthologies and movies tbh. make movies fun again tm.
jeepers creepers — never seen it before and MY GOD was screaming the whole time i was watching bc no?? we do not need to investigate you KNOW it’s a creature. all of this might’ve been avoided if y’all just minded your damn business 😔
then off the top of my head i rewatched my comfort movie sherlock holmes bc fuck iron man, rdj’s sherlock is his best role to me. i definitely wanna watch more movies next year.
5 shows i watched
ah i mostly just watched anime this year
chainsaw man — stressed. everyone is sketchy and i’m stressed
rewatch of demon slayer with my friend bc demon slayer is the only thing that matters :) finally have hulu so i can fucking watch season 2 i just haven’t gotten around to it yet 😭
way of the househusband — finally got around to watching the anime this year and just as the manga, it’s perfect
jujutsu kaisen — i love it but at what cost. also i’m a simp for nanami oof
death parade / nana — i’ve only watched the first episodes of each but nana stresses me out (lovingly) and i think death parade is fascinating i just need to make more time to watch shit lol
5 songs of 2022 (*separate from spotify wrapped*)
odo — ado -> got introduced to this song recently and just absolutely obsessed with it. it’s the song that may be sparking a change in one of my wips that i mentioned lol
devil — max changmin -> came out in january and this song owns the whole fucking year idc idc idc
go back — se so neon -> UGH THIS BAND their songs slap so hard but go back is genuinely just so good
濁 (daku) — the gazette -> this whole album. but i want this song directly injected into my veins.
better — boa -> CRACK. THERES CRACK IN THIS SONG. but boa >>>>>>
5 albums or artists of 2022
i don’t have 5 but these three specifically:
devil (the 2nd mini album) — max changmin -> this album owns my ass. cannot believe he started the year like this. how fucking dare lol.
the gazette, always my beloveds
lowlife princess: noir — bibi -> she snapped with this one. every song and mv snapped. bibi vengence & animal farm especially
5 books i read
definitely didn’t read 5 books lol didn’t have time or space mentally. however i will say i started to read bram stoker’s dracula this year, got stuck on the part about paprika, thought it was hilarious and never finished chapter 1. it’s super good from the bit i read so far, i’m just easily amused and don’t have patience 😔
5 characters from media
nanami (jjk) — feral about a man a single man
like everyone in demon slayer but tanjiro komado my fucking BELOVED 😭
hanzo (ovw) — 6 years strong obsessing over this man pff
link — i am once again pointing at my botw self insert au side blog lmaoooo
gojo / rengoku share a spot only bc i love them but ow pain :)
sorry i don’t listen to podcasts lol
and finally
5 positive things that happened in 2022 no matter how small:
got conveyor belt sushi for the first time! i wish it was closer by but maybe it’s better i’d be there every day
created a new writeblr so i could start getting more confident talking about my stories. i think it’s marginally worked! i’m working on myself still but i feel like i’ve been more open and indulgent this year
5 years with my partner!
had a pretty good birthday for the first time in years
despite the struggles working from home has done a lot for my mental health and i want to try and secure another wfh job in the future.
this is an open tag! i hope everyone had a decent year to some extent 💛

Tomb of Dracula #1 (Conway/Colan, Apr 1972). A wordy, moody slice of horror — I expected to skim this book until Blade turned up, but was surprised to find myself relishing Gene Colan’s inks. I know! Me, enjoying Colan’s work! That’s growth.

My childhood in some TV show:
1) Murder She Wrote (1984 - 1996)
Murder, She Wrote is an American crime drama television series starring Angela Lansbury (born October 16, 1925) as mystery writer and amateur detective Jessica Fletcher. Moving into television in 1984, she achieved worldwide fame as fictional writer and sleuth Jessica Fletcher in the American whodunit series Murder, She Wrote, which ran for twelve seasons until 1996, becoming one of the longest-running and most popular detective drama series in television history.
The show revolves around the day-to-day life of Jessica Fletcher, (formerly MacGill), a widowed and retired English teacher, who becomes a successful mystery writer. Despite fame and fortune, Jessica remains a resident of Cabot Cove, a small coastal community in Maine, and maintains her links with all of her old friends, never letting her success go to her head.
Jessica invariably proves more perceptive than the official investigators of a case, who are almost always willing to arrest the most likely suspect. By carefully piecing the clues together and asking astute questions, she always manages to trap the real murderer.
Jessica's relationship with law enforcement officials varies from place to place. Both sheriffs of Cabot Cove resign themselves to having her meddle in their cases. However, most detectives and police officers do not want her anywhere near their crime scenes, until her accurate deductions convince them to listen to her. Some are happy to have her assistance from the start, often because they are fans of her books. With time, she makes friends in many police departments across the U.S., as well as with a British police officer attached to Scotland Yard. At the start of season eight, more of the stories were set in New York City with Jessica moving into an apartment there part-time in order to teach criminology.
2) Columbo (1968 - 2003)
Columbo is an American crime drama television series starring Peter Falk as Columbo, a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. Columbo is a shrewd but inelegant blue-collar homicide detective whose trademarks include his rumpled beige raincoat, unassuming demeanor, cigar, old Peugeot 403 car, unseen wife (whom he mentions frequently), and often leaving a room only to return with the catchphrase "Just one more thing." Columbo and his wife own also a Basset Hound named Dog.
Peter Falk (September 16, 1927 – June 23, 2011) was an American actor and comedian, known for his role as Lieutenant Columbo in the long-running television series Columbo (1968–2003), for which he won four Primetime Emmy Awards (1972, 1975, 1976, 1990) and a Golden Globe Award (1973).
The recurring plot's homicide suspects are often affluent members of high society; this has led some to see class conflict as an element of each story, however the show's creators have stated that setting the program in the world of the wealthy and powerful was to create a fish out of water feeling, not to make a social or political point. Suspects carefully cover their tracks and are initially dismissive of Columbo's circumstantial speech and apparent ineptitude. They become increasingly unsettled as his pestering behavior teases out incriminating evidence. His relentless approach often leads to self-incrimination or outright confession.
3) The Munsters (1964 - 1966)
The Munsters is an American sitcom depicting the home life of a family of benign monsters. The series starred Fred Gwynne as Frankenstein's monster and head-of-the-household Herman Munster; Yvonne De Carlo as his wife Lily Munster; Al Lewis as Lily's father, Grandpa, the somewhat over-the-hill vampire Count Dracula who longs for the "good old days" in Transylvania; Beverley Owen (later replaced by Pat Priest) as their teenage niece Marilyn Munster, who was attractive by conventional standards but the "ugly duckling" of the family; and Butch Patrick as their werewolfish son Eddie Munster. The series was a satire of both traditional monster movies and the wholesome family fare of the era. It ran concurrently with the similarly macabre-themed The Addams Family (which aired on ABC).
4) Zorro (1957 - 1959)
Armando Joseph Catalano (January 14, 1924 – April 30, 1989), better known as Guy Williams, was an Italo-American actor and former fashion model. Among his most notable achievements were TV serie Zorro (1957), in which he played the title chatacter: the noble hildago Don Diego de la Vega, who became the masked vigilante Zorro.
Don Diego de la Vega is a young man who is the only son of Don Alejandro de la Vega (George J. Lewis), the richest landowner in California, while Diego's mother is dead. Diego learned his swordsmanship while at university in Madrid, and created his masked alter ego after he was unexpectedly summoned home by his father because California had fallen into the hands of the greedy and cruel local Comandante, Capitán Enrique Sánchez Monasterio (Britt Lomond).
Just before reaching California, Diego learns of the tyranny of Captain Monastario, and realizes that his father, Don Alejandro, summoned him to help fight this injustice. Although he won medals for his fencing back in Spain, Diego decides that his best course of action is to conceal his ability with a sword, and to affect the demeanor of a milquetoast intellectual rather than a decisive man of action. His alter ego, Zorro operates primarily at night, taking the direct action that Diego cannot. This deception does not always sit well with Diego, especially as it affects his relationship with his disappointed father. In reality, Diego relies heavily on his wits, both with and without the mask on. Later in the series, Diego emerges as a respected figure in his own right, a clever thinker and loyal friend who just happens to be hopeless at swordplay.
He is typically portrayed as a dashing masked vigilante who defends the commoners and indigenous peoples of California against corrupt and tyrannical officials and other villains, helped by his mute servant Bernardo, played by Gene Sheldon (born Eugene Hume, February 1, 1908 – May 1, 1982), an American actor, mime artist, and musician.
The character's visual motif is typically a black costume with a black flowing Spanish cape or cloak, a black flat-brimmed hat known as sombrero cordobés, and a black sackcloth mask that covers the top half of his head. In Disney's Zorro television series the horse gets the name Tornado, which has been kept in many later adaptations. In most versions, Zorro keeps Tornado in a secret cave, connected to his hacienda with a system of secret passages and tunnels.
5) Addams Family (1964 - 1966)
The Addams Family is a close-knit extended family with decidedly macabre interests and supernatural abilities, though no explanation for their powers is explicitly given in the series. The wealthy, endlessly enthusiastic Gomez Addams (John Astin) is madly in love with his refined wife, Morticia (Carolyn Jones). Along with their daughter Wednesday (Lisa Loring), their son Pugsley (Ken Weatherwax), Uncle Fester (Jackie Coogan), and Grandmama (Blossom Rock), they reside at 0001 Cemetery Lane in an ornate, gloomy, Second Empire-style mansion, which is portrayed by the house at 21 Chester Place in Los Angeles.
The family is attended by their servants: towering butler Lurch (Ted Cassidy); and Thing (also Cassidy), a disembodied hand that appears from within wooden boxes and other places. Other relatives who made recurring appearances included Cousin Itt (Felix Silla), Morticia's older sister Ophelia (also portrayed by Jones), and Morticia's mother Grandma Frump (Margaret Hamilton).
Question: how old am I?
Little clue: my birth year is one of the dates above.

Top 5 JM roles?
@mariocki thank you - someone knows the surest way to my heart! lol. Also so hard! I get a lot of pleasure out of a lot of his roles...
1. Henry VII in The Shadow of the Tower (BBC 1972) - hands down, of his surviving TV appearances this is far and away the best, and as far as I can find I'd have to get a time machine and go to the theatre a lot to find anything that'd match it.
2. Generalmajor von Wittke in Enemy at the Door (LWT, 1978) - I just really love everything about this guest role.
3. Carter in Thriller installment "Good Salary, Prospects, Free Coffin" (ATV, 1975) just because it's so delightfully cheesy, and everyone seems to be having fun with it, and he's looking nice, and there's Julian Glover, and their plan is so improbable! It's so stupid in the best way, and I love it.
4. John Seward in Dracula (Thames, 1968). I mean, everything about this is a choice and I love him. It was so unreal to go from SotT to this, I'm never going to be over it. He has ruined every single crypt scene in every Dracula for me now. Plus, nice coat, and there's a lot of rolling up his sleeves and fainting, and there's a fandom of at least two, and I even get fic for this for Yuletide some years, and I'm totally allowed to ship him with Suzanne Neve in it.
5. At this point, I have about 6 possibilities, but I'm going to go for Charles Roland in The Racing Game (Yorkshire TV 1979). I'd like it if he was in it more, but Roland is a clever enough character for him, I like his relationship with Sid and I love that Francis then just merrily took the TV casting and wrote 3 more books with them in, so if I read a Sid Halley book, the author has literally fancast James Maxwell in it. It's so great. Plus, tiny fandom, and some amazing Sid & Charles fic courtesy of Yuletide in years past (not for me).
I hope you appreciate my measured, insightful appreciation of his performances! /o\
#top 5 asks#replies#mariocki#i also really like colin in tpg#if he was in it any more he might have got in this list#and i'm liking dr fox too but i want more to see where he goes#and i am sorry not to include girl on approval#and then there's whether or not pieter and peter in dangerman are the same person and if not why does drake have two friends called p(i)ete#who are both spies and both look exactly alike#but i think this is my list. for tonight.

top 5 peter cushing movies or roles
I have two different sets of answers because good cush performance =/= good movie.
Top 5 Favorite Movies Peter Cushing Was In:
1. Cash On Demand (1961)
Heist thriller but it's A Christmas Carol. This movie makes me lose my shit!!! Must a movie be 'deep'? Is it not enough that a thriller actually set me on edge?
2. Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)
Yeah.
3. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
For what it lacks in book accuracy, it makes up for in pure, undiluted Hammer goodness. Boobs!!! Blood!!! Vibrant color!!! Homoeroticism!!! Fabulous costumes!!! Ugh.
4. The Brides of Dracula (1960)
Best viewed with a critical eye but Gotdamn is it good.
Also, I would like to give Van Helsing a kiss.
5. Captain Clegg (1962)
Swashbuckling smuggler tale!!! Cushing acting like a bastard!!! I watched this movie six times in one week!!! It's just a bucket of fun and I like it more very time I rewatch it.
Honorable mentions: Fear in the Night (1972), Madhouse (1974), Horror of Dracula (1958), Dracula AD 1972 (1972), The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), Nineteen Eighty-Four (1954), Horror Express (1972), House of the Long Shadows (1983) (because fuck you it's a fun movie)
-
Top Five Favorite Peter Cushing Performances:
1. Wilhuff Tarkin (Star Wars: A New Hope (1977))
Love of my life,,,,,
Also 1. Victor Frankenstein (Hammer Frankenstein series, 1957-1974)
Bastard.
Cushing nails abrupt mood shifts, and Hammer Frankenstein is full of em. Victor is cold, calculating, ambitious, morally gray (most of the time?), and charismatic as Fuck. One moment a brooding antihero, the next a heartless villain. He pulls it off, hun. And looks fabulous all the while (even when he's a disheveled mess mwah).
(my personal favorite of his performances in the series are Curse, Revenge, Created Woman, and Must Be Destroyed to be more specific lol.)
2. The Van Helsings (Yes All Of Them) (Hammer Dracula, 1958-1974)
I can have a tragic little gentle man. As a treat.
(Brides, Horror, and AD 1972 are him at his best, methinks)
3. Harry Fordyce (Cash on Demand (1961))
Harry Fordyce my beloved.
Nerdy lil bank manager is tormented for nearly an hour and Cush tries his darndest. All the little mannerisms and reactions he does!!! I can't!!! He is Selling it!!! I am genuinely upset by everything that happens to him!!! Fuck.
4. Sherlock Holmes (The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959))
Sherlock my beloved.
Cushing was Excellent with props and emoting, and this is a prime example. He's just hopping around being a sassy lil bitch <3. He's so much fun in this movie dfdtdgfgf
5. Christopher Maitland (The Skull (1965))
The movie itself is kinda blah but Peter's performance is so good??? He made this movie worth watching tbh. The palatable fear!!! I was worried for this man anytime he was in remote danger!!! The dream sequence makes me lose my shit!!! Fuck!!!
He's so genuine in everything he did and took acting so seriously. He never condescended to the audience and fuck!!!! It shows!!! He's so good. I love him ugh.
Honorable Mentions: Tales From the Crypt (1972), The Ghoul (1975), Nineteen Eighty-Four (1954), The House That Dripped Blood (1971), The Flesh and the Fiends (1960)
#i could rant for hours. *sighs*#this ask was so much fun. i had a real ball lmao#peter cushing#anonymous#asks#edit: i added tarkin to the second list <333

A disfigured genius sets off to murder the 9 doctors reponsible for the death of his wife using the 10 plagues of Egypt. This film is so strange that I love it .If you read the premise it seems like a typical Vincent Price movie but the execution makes it wholly unique and my favorite Vincent Price film
3.Black Christmas(1974)
A killer stalks a soroity and leaves disturbing and obscene phone callsOne of my favorite slashers .The killer in this film is terrifying cause he is so anonymous
4.Tourist Trap(1979)
A group of young people encounterLivning mannequins,a masked killer, psychic powers and Chuck Connors.Tjhis film is legit one of the most terrifying films I have ever seen
5.Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979)
A retelling of Dracula ,highlighting the lonliness of the vampire This film is beautifully melancholly
6.The Omen(1976)
A politician finds out his son is the Anti Christ. My favorite devil movie, with shocking scenes, and great performances by Gregory Peck ,Billie Whitelaw,David Warner, and Patrick Troghton
7.Alien(1979)
A spaceship crew encounters a mysterious message and investigate leading to a monstrous creature being loose on their ship. One of the great sci fi horror movies, with a magnificently designed monster and great acting
8.Phantasm (1979)
A young boy discovers strange things going on at a local funeral home. This film is like a nightmare put to film ,and is one of the creepiest films I have ever seen
9.The Exorcist (1973)
A young girl is posessed by a demon as a priest struggles with his faith ..So I have always thought this was a good movie but a bit overrated.....Until a few days ago when I started thinking about it and scared myself .There are moments in this film where I get why people call it one of the scariest films ever
10.Theater of Blood(1973)
A shakespearian actor starts murdering his critics .This film is just fun and you get to hear Vincent Price reciting Shakespeare
11.Halloween (1978)
A Man breaks out of a mental institution ,and starts killing people on Halloween night. The film that codified slashers,I had to put it on the list.Michel is my favorite of the masked silent killers
12.The Wicker Man(1973)
A catholic police officer visits a community of pagans in search of a missing girl. There is a lot of things going on in this movie, mainly a clash of religions that makes it fascinating .You also have one of the greatest performances of Sir Christopher Lee and to top it all off ,it’s a MUSICAL(And yes all the songs are diagetic ,but there are multiple musical numbers in this film,it’s a musical in my book )
13.Tales From The Crypt (1972)
A group of people enter a crypt and hear stories of their death from a somber fellow known as the Crypt Keeper. One of my favorite anthology movies .Based on the EC comic books, this is a more serious adaptation then the later TV series
14.The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1974)
A group of young people travel across Texas and enter an old house, where they meet Leatherface. The villains are what makes this film as well as some hanting visuals and a gritty feel
15.Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
So honoruble mention to Carrie which is great ........But I have seen this movie more then I have seen Carrie. The story of a songwriter whose music is stolen by a devilish music producer, this rock and roll fable combines elements of Faust ,Phantom of the Opera and the Picture of Dorian Gray .IT’s a fun tribute to classic horror while being a satire of the music industry
#phantom of the paradise#halloween#the texas chainsaw massacre#the exorcist#the legend of hell house#the abominable dr. phibes#the wicker man#tales from the crypt#theater of blood#phantasm#alien#black christmas#tourist trap#nosferatu the vampyre#the omen#horror

HBO Max New Releases:. July 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
LeBron James might be out of the NBA playoffs, but he’s still angling to be a big part of the summer entertainment season. That’s because HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by a very special sequel.
Space Jam: A New Legacy premieres on July 16. will find LeBron teaming up with the Looney Tunes in a Warner Bros. IP-extravaganza. Can ‘Bron and the Looney Tunes beat the Goon Squad before Warner Bros.’ server steals LeBron “Bronny” Jr.’s soul (or something)? Let’s hope so. The two other major WB releases this month, No Sudden Move and Tom and Jerry in New York, both come to HBO Max on July 1.
HBO Max is also bringing some fun TV shows to its stream this month. The long-awaited Gossip Girl revival premieres on July 8. That will be followed by Mike White’s satirical limited series The White Lotus on July 11. Ronan Farrow’s excellent book Catch and Kill gets a docuseries adaptation on July 12.
July 1 will see the arrival of library titles like Planet of the Apes, Reservoir Dogs, and Scream. Recent hit Judas and the Black Messiah comes to HBO Max on that date as well. It’s a good month for geek TV with the Doctor Who 2020 Christmas Special (July 1), Nancy Drew season 2 (July 3), and Batwoman season 2 (July 27) all coming home to their streaming residence.
