Top 5 JM roles?
@mariocki thank you - someone knows the surest way to my heart! lol. Also so hard! I get a lot of pleasure out of a lot of his roles...
1. Henry VII in The Shadow of the Tower (BBC 1972) - hands down, of his surviving TV appearances this is far and away the best, and as far as I can find I'd have to get a time machine and go to the theatre a lot to find anything that'd match it.
2. Generalmajor von Wittke in Enemy at the Door (LWT, 1978) - I just really love everything about this guest role.
3. Carter in Thriller installment "Good Salary, Prospects, Free Coffin" (ATV, 1975) just because it's so delightfully cheesy, and everyone seems to be having fun with it, and he's looking nice, and there's Julian Glover, and their plan is so improbable! It's so stupid in the best way, and I love it.
4. John Seward in Dracula (Thames, 1968). I mean, everything about this is a choice and I love him. It was so unreal to go from SotT to this, I'm never going to be over it. He has ruined every single crypt scene in every Dracula for me now. Plus, nice coat, and there's a lot of rolling up his sleeves and fainting, and there's a fandom of at least two, and I even get fic for this for Yuletide some years, and I'm totally allowed to ship him with Suzanne Neve in it.
5. At this point, I have about 6 possibilities, but I'm going to go for Charles Roland in The Racing Game (Yorkshire TV 1979). I'd like it if he was in it more, but Roland is a clever enough character for him, I like his relationship with Sid and I love that Francis then just merrily took the TV casting and wrote 3 more books with them in, so if I read a Sid Halley book, the author has literally fancast James Maxwell in it. It's so great. Plus, tiny fandom, and some amazing Sid & Charles fic courtesy of Yuletide in years past (not for me).
I hope you appreciate my measured, insightful appreciation of his performances! /o\
