ppl seem to like the idea of harry courting draco or harry doing big public displays of affection to ask him out (think promposals). but i feel like he'd be so awkward at dating. he doesn't quite know what to do with or show physical and emotional affection, the weasleys give him bad advice on romance, he's also oblivious when ppl are interested in him.

what he does have is earnestness and determination - he makes the first move on accident, just bursts out his feelings, brave and embarrassed.

draco knows all about courting and respects tradition, but he's not the type to make the first move (not anymore at least, not like when he was a kid, where running to his parents for safety and comfort was a luxurious option). he's calculating and weighs his options - what if he confesses but harry doesn't like him? what if he confesses and harry DOES like him? what if harry likes him, but doesn't like dating him? he's more hesitant and guarded with his feelings, but is more likely to show his affection towards loved ones.

harry asks him out in the middle of a conversation, just because he loves watching how passionate draco gets about something he loves. even after weeks of dating, draco insists on courting him the "proper way", showering him with gifts, writing letters that make harry blush, leaving loving post-its all over harry's home and work desk, delivering anonymous flowers, publicly asking if he can escort harry home (they're both embarrassed). he's touchy feely too, which harry isn't used to, but physical contact becomes easy and second nature now with draco. harry doesn't quite get the courting, yet still loves it.

Don't mind me, I'm just thinking about the mirroring between Draco Malfoy knowing who Harry Potter was before they arrived at Hogwarts, and assuming that he would want to be friends with him because he's a Malfoy, and Scorpius Malfoy knowing who Albus Severus Potter was before they arrived at Hogwarts, but assuming that he wouldn't want to be friends with him because he's a Malfoy.

The stark difference between those two initial meetings is so, so important to me. And I will forever love Albus for seeing past the Malfoy name because, even though everyone was telling him that Scorpius was the "wrong sort", he went with his heart and found his soulmate.

Here’s Draco’s first Christmas holiday at the Burrow

When James was young, he used to daydream about Regulus, member of The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. (He still does, to be fair, when his husband isn’t looking)

He fantasized about the stoic Slytherin, who always snarled his last name. James’s heart perked up anytime he heard “Potter” in his posh accent, even more when Regulus was tired and his French accent came through.

He had almost lost a match against Slytherin, to mesmerised by the boys Quidditch skills. So it didn’t come as a surprise when his Amorentia smelled like broom polish, forest and green apples. Green apples, because Regulus seemed to live solely on those.

Imagine James’s surprise when Harry, the son Lily and James co-parented, who had two fathers and two mothers, began to ramble about Draco Malfoy, member of one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight.

At first it was all hate talk. “He’s so annoying”, “He always calls me Pottah”, “Why is he always in a mood?!”

But through the years it developed and now Harry was quite obviously smitten with the mean Slytherin. Seeker of the other Quidditch team. And when one day Harry wrote a letter home about them making Amorentia, and his smelling like green apples, but that couldn’t be because what would he have to do with Malfoy? Regulus snorted. “Well, you potters clearly have a type” he mumbled.

Then, even quieter. “Can’t believe my grandnephew will become my son-in-law”

"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to intrude. I'll... I'll leave." Tom's expression softens, observing your embarrassment. He swiftly finishes changing, his movements graceful yet deliberate. "No need to be overly flustered. It was an accident." You nod, still unable to look directly at him. The air feels charged, a palpable tension enveloping the room. Tom clears his throat, breaking the silence. "Well, since you're here, was there something you needed?" You muster up the courage to meet his gaze, your voice steadier now. "I... I wanted to discuss the latest Potions assignment." Tom inclines his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Very well, let's go over it then." As you both delve into the intricacies of the assignment, a newfound sense of camaraderie blossoms, the awkwardness of the moment fading into the background.
