The loneliness epidemic seems to be to be a symptom of a larger problem and thats increasing levels of social anxiety and depression.

Of course men are lonely when they live under a base level of suspicion and allowed expressions of (even platonic) affection or closeness.

Men spend their life being expected to measure up to an ideal of manhood to prove their worth and safety while every healthy coping mechanism or expression of that anxiety is locked away to women or misinterpreted from men to be manipulation or weakness leaving it to fester under the surface.

Whats worse, there is generally more empathy for women then men which means people are more likely to be understanding and compassionate when those anxieties lead her to act in unhealthy ways. offering comfort and redirecting her towards a more healthy direction where as with men we are more likely to shame and punish them for not already knowing to do that.

This means that anxiety can become a trigger for more anxiety, The act of feeling anxious creating a vicious loop of shame embarrassment and anxiety.

Really I say it boils down most cleanly to the gap in insecurity empathy.

When boys and young men express insecurity, we respond with mocking derision and when girls and young women express insecurity we respond compassionately and understandingly.

Dove will spend 6 million dollars on a 30 second super bowl ad to affirm to insecure young women that they matter and are beautiful just for being born a women meanwhile we call insecure young men virgin neckbearded losers.

Shopping Review

I bought this today and I'm excited about using it. Usually Dove soap makes me break out, but I'm hoping this works for me. Especially because it smells amazing. My biggest issue is that it's only available at Walmart, which is total bullshit. I hate Walmart and I would have no issue with spending a $1 more if it was available at Target.

Trying to find more plant based or natural soap, cause it seems like everything else breaks me out something terrible.

I loved Dove's real virtual beauty advertising campaign. I have never felt more happy or liberated after watching an ad before. I would highly recommend watching it, but I'm warning you now, DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS.

I have what seems to be long-lingering anxiety from looking at the comment section beneath that video. Thousands of people there are hatefully bashing fat people, and (since that apparently isn't bad enough) physically disabled people and people with Down syndrome too, purely because they were also included in the advertisement alongside a fat person.

The comments ranged from the "nicer" side of things like "I'm not going to put these people down for their passions, but no one would ever play these characters if they were put in a video game" to the more direct "fat people are so disgusting and lazy, why on earth would anyone want to play one in a video game? Aren't gamers trying to escape reality, not get bogged down by it?"

I can't hear clusters of words that remind me of those comments without feeling a twinge of panic anymore. Even just seeing Dove soap can be triggering for my anxiety (although I refuse to buy another kind of soap because I will support Dove until the day I die for taking a commercial risk like this one and supporting fat people).

The fact that fatphobia has gotten so bad that literally thousands of people can band together to call a fat woman worthless on an advertisement (not to mention the woman in the wheelchair, or the gal with Down syndrome who were also bashed), just goes to show that fat activism needs as much support as it can get. Heck, I'll settle for people making an effort just not to express that they hate us.

Please, people. Help us out. Fat people are not worth any less purely because we're "not pretty." Show some respect, because despite popular belief, we are human beings too.
