Seabird Medley
From top clockwise - Tākapu (Australasian Gannet), Tarāpunga (Red-billed Gull), Tara Iti (Fairy Tern), Tūturiwhatu (New Zealand Dotterel), Tōrea pango (Variable Oystercatcher). These are all shorebird species seen on beaches from my part of the country.
Can't remember when I did this, probably Nov 2018. Can't remember what I called it either. I painted them on little craft canvases and then glued them together with popsicle sticks

10th May
Dotterel Day
Dotterel. Source: British Trust for Ornithology website
Today is Dotterel Day, which fell at the height of the old bird netting season, in which the allegedly dozy Dotterel, was a favourite prey. Only a few hundred of these birds now survive in the British Isles, mainly in the north of Scotland, although this reduction of numbers is recent and more likely due to climate change rather than historic hunting. Being easy to catch, the Dotterel developed a reputation for stupidity, leading to the term ‘dotterel’ being used to describe a foolish or gullible person.
A sprawling fair on the streets of Randwick, near Stroud in Gloucestershire, the Runnick Wap, takes place on the second Saturday in May, leading it to be named Wap Saturday. It features a magnificent parade in which the participants dress in eighteenth and nineteenth century costume and carry a Wap Mayor and Wap Queen to the village pond before dumping them in. The suitably drenched Mayor and Queen then lead a Double Gloucester cheese rolling event down a steep bank to determine the health of the crops in the coming summer. The events are supposed to date from medieval times.

Crozier: Sir John, myself, Mr. Blanky and Mr. Reid: Only four of us at this table are Arctic veterans.

It's actually really adorable that my birdtrack app switches up whether the little icon depicting the bird species is male or female.
#birdtrack=an app where you enter your bird sightings#not sure if it's international or not#i truly love this- there are a few limits e.g. it doesn't do it for the duck species where the females are just brown and male v colourful#but house sparrow where female is brown and male is brown with patterns it does#and bullfinch where the pattern is the same but the female is soft fawn and the male is bright pink- both equally bullfinch#so this isn't just for the rare 'female is brighter' species like phalarope and dotterel#i like it it makes you think 'oh yeah both these plumages are equally that species'#of course it's still standard to use only adult plumages which i feel makes sense

Save the Dotterels — BayBuzz
Did you know 16% of the world’s population of Pohowera (Banded Dotterels) are found here in Hawke’s Bay? For the first time, last year a group of volunteers and keen birders set up the Save the Dotterel’s group to monitor 1.5 km of Hawke Bay beach front from the northern end of The Esplanade at Westshore to beach front adjacent to the Rotary pathway spanning from the end of Ferguson Street at…

Bird #47 - the southern New Zealand dotterel
A sadder post today, sorry! While the northern subspecies is faring well, the southern NZ dotterel numbered only 101 birds in April, and the number continues to drop due to introduced predators. In fact, the population has declined by a fifth from 126 just in the last year. These birds can naturally live to be 30; their current life expectancy is only about 5 years.
They breed on Stewart Island to the south of New Zealand, where a few rangers are stationed to trap introduced predators. Large areas of the island aren't protected, though, since there isn't enough funding for more traps and rangers.
You can find out more here on the NZ Department of Conservation site (they even have a little 10 minute documentary but its really sad), and if you'd like to help them out you can donate here!
