Homelessness in America
Homelessness in America is rampantly occurring, and we could all blame it on the recent COVID-19 disease, but we could all agree it is because of poverty. In New York City, and other huge cities all over the world, the gap between extreme wealth and extreme poor have always co-existed. Politicians have wholly ignored such issues, in favor of giving attention to other social issues.
Tumblr media
The recent poll, taken in January 2020, ‘‘New York had an estimated 91,271 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that total, 15,151 were family households, 1,251 were Veterans, 3,072 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 7,515 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2017-2018 school year shows that an estimated 153,209 public school students experienced homelessness over the course of the year. Of that total, 5,939 students were unsheltered, 44,678 were in shelters, 3,157 were in hotels/motels, and 99,435 were doubled up.’’
Tumblr media
The numbers continue to grow because legislation is slow, and most shelters are up to their capacity. Most people who have little to no income cannot survive only on government benefits and as it limits to nothing, homelessness increases. ‘‘There is a general consensus that, while not necessarily preventing homeless, the generosity and comprehensiveness of welfare systems of welfare systems shape the degree to which households will experience homelessness and housing exclusion, as well as the characteristics of those households (Allen et al, 2002.) The basic pattern, developed by Stephens and Fitzpatrick, (2007), is that the more generous and comprehensive a welfare system, the fewer the number households who experience homelessness will be largely single-person households and will have experienced other forms of exclusions, substance misuse, and various disabilities. On the other hand, more miserly and constrained welfare systems will generate a much higher number of households experiencing homelessness due to poverty, and housing affordability, rather than individual-level disabilities.’’

My name is Arielle, I am a social scientist, and I am a New Yorker speaking about homelessness in my state because I feel that, especially now, everyone should speak up and give their voice as a show of solidarity. I will continue to write and post about social issues impacting my community, state, and the world. There are links to help and donate to all these shelters down below.

One Man’s Trash: Deadstock = Live Profit
Leftover, remnant, scrap, or “deadstock” fabrics present big brands, textile vendors and emerging designers with monetary opportunity
In this article: 1. A brief recap of textile excess
2. A profitable way to manage waste
3. Internal reuse
We agree that too much fabric is a big, and unsustainable problem. But what are brands to do with their leftover materials? Until recently, most of it ended up in the bin.
That’s said, it’s almost paradoxical for the fashion world—an industry built on newness and beauty, and the exchange of old clothes for new trends—to consider materials once destined for the landfill as valuable. But as the push for a more sustainable and less wasteful industry gains more momentum, deadstock fabric has become an additional sales model for large companies that have signed commitments to reduce their waste by 2030. Simultaneously, the model helps smaller brands lessen their ecological footprints by offering pre-existing fabric as a sourcing option, thereby avoiding the need to produce more fabric and with it, more deadstock.
Textile Excess as a sales opportunity
The fashion and textile supply chain creates an overabundance of fabric (approximately 16 million tons of textiles, we last noted) that usually just end up in landfill, or get incinerated. This happens because brands often need to overproduce in order to achieve mill minimums, and are left therefore with rotting material and a deficit in their own spending.
As long as the system of minimum order quantities persists (a reasonable demand, considering the work and energy required of mills to produce fabrics), large companies or mills with no immediate way out of their deadstock conundrum can opt to resell their extra, unused yardage—so instead of depositing extra material into a landfill and sinking the cost, they can recuperate production costs if not make profit.
New York-based deadstock vendor Queen of Raw noticed this profitable opportunity, estimating that over $120 billion worth of excess fabric remains in warehouses. The vendor uses machine learning advancements and blockchain technology to find and track excess fabric around the world, and helps companies and mills liquidate their stock while asking a share of the sale. The reseller/retailer presents itself as the foremost source of B2B and B2C deadstock sales.
Queen of Raw’s e-commerce resells a wide variety of materials from organic silks to faux fur to high quality charmeuse and tweed, all available at quantities as small as one yard to full rolls of fabric. It’s primarily a business opportunity, but it’s also so much more sustainable than the past system of just throwing excess fabric away, contributing to mountains of nonbiodegradable garbage and greenhouse gas emissions.
According to QoR, reclaiming and utilizing just one yard of deadstock fabric can save about 700 gallons of water. The company has, then, according to its metrics, prevented over 1 billion gallons of water from being used in the production of excess textiles, as the encouraged use of   pre-produced fabrics eliminates any need to use additional water or natural resources.
Another profitable option: Use your deadstock
Another way to keep money in the company is for brands to do what luxury designer Jonathan Cohen has presented and use up their deadstock in limited edition, sustainable collections. Jonathan Cohen Studio’s collection minimizes landfill waste while offering a design team with sustainable creative challenges, while also elevating the concept of deadstock to the thoughtful consumer.
Even Missoni presented a limited-edition collection made of its own deadstock fabric. Any company would benefit from an effort to use up its excess in whatever way possible; doing so also presents a sustainability marketing opportunity for the brands that accept the challenge.
But donating deadstock is also good for business. New York deadstock collector and vendor FABSCRAP allows New York City-based brands to donate their smaller sampling scraps for other companies to pick out and use up. Participation in this reuse economy gives brands the opportunity to reduce their landfill contributions and also convey their efforts to reduce waste in their marketing. FABSCRAP is the official fabric vendor of the upcoming ReFashion Week in New York, presented by donateNYC, in which selected sustainable designers will use deadstock fabric scraps to make one-of-a-kind, limited edition pieces.
