These jeans belonged to grandmother, Judy, though us cousins called her Meem. By the looks of the fraying, these pants were well loved. They are little big for me, resting on my hips instead of my waist, and have a wider leg than I like to wear. The brand, Cherokee USA, has been around since 1973. I wish I could ask my grandmother when she bought them, but they have a pretty 90s vibe IMO.

I love the waistline, the pleating, the deep pockets. I think these pants are so beautiful. When my Meem passed away, I inherited all her old clothing, textiles, sewing notions, fabric. Even though these pants don’t quite fit, have yellowed in places, and have a few spots where the stitching have pulled out, they have a lot of life left in them.

THE PLAN: Take them apart so that I can tailor them for my body and taste, install a new fly zipper, boil them in pigment remover to address the yellowing and stains, and then *possibly* dye them. Unless, maybe, I can pull off white pants…? I might add back pockets as well if I can salvage enough fabric from taking in the wide legs.

The neighbouring communities come together to work under the acacia trees for brands like @viviennewestwood and @mimco, making jewellery and beaded panels. This work is causing many changes within the Maasai groups. Gender roles are changing, as young men realise the value of the work of the women and begin beading too, shifting gender norms.
