Wrapping Up During the 1970s: Simplicity 9793

Wrapped dresses showed up in US history as wrapped aprons first, and then morphed into dresses in the early 20th Century. The Hoover Apron became the bungalow dress, an easy-to-make and easy fitting item that was supposed to serve a woman as she made breakfast or chatted with the deliveryman at her back door. You can find wrapped dresses appearing over and over again in various forms after that.

Diane Von Furstenberg's wrap dress which hit around the knee became a fashion hit in 1974 because women had largely turned to pants in the late 1960s in order to avoid the indignities of the miniskirt and the attention it attracted. They were hungering for a novel dress for grown women--the minidress was often sold using childish looks--after several years of pants. Hers had long, fitted sleeves and was good for office work or for an evening out depending on what it was made of . Which is why this re-issued pattern in modern sizes is so interesting. It is a halter version of the wrapped dress, so clearly for play wear and evening wear, and comes in both a mini length version and an ankle length version and no version for around the knee, although obviously you can cut the hem wherever you like.

Like the dress it copies, it is made out of knit. One of the luxury knits of the era was called Quiana, a DuPont nylon invented during the 1960s that did not wrinkle and draped luxuriously. It no longer exists, so they recommend knit jersey, including tricot, and stretch velvet. Because wrapped dresses flap open, stretch velvet or a wool jersey are your best bets. Both of them stick to themselves, which means that that the annoyance of baring flesh when you are not in the mood is minimized.

Black stretch velvet wrap dress

I’m so excited to share my latest creation!  I’m so pleased with this black velvet dress, made using the GBSB Wrap Dress pattern.  The velvet fabric is luxurious, and the knee-length silhouette is flattering and versatile. The beaded embellishment on the shoulder adds a touch of glamour - I can’t wait for more opportunities to wear it out on the town!

Beads and satin binding from my stash.

Sewn with my trusty Janome overlocker and finished with my Janome coverstitch.

Notes on sewing: 

I only had 2m of this fabric, bought for a different project I abandoned.  I was really careful with my cutting out!  In an ideal world, I’d have added some length to the pattern for the waist ties, but this wasn’t possible with the fabric available.

In my haste to make the dress and get all the pattern pieces laid out, I messed up and accidentally laid the pattern out “upside down” so that the velvet nap strokes “up” instead of “down”.  Aside from the tactile element for the wearer, not a disaster - but it does mean that it collects more fluff!

Next time I make this dress, I won’t bother with the binding - it’s far to stiff and alters the shaping of the dress around the neckline.  Instead I’ll add an inch to the pattern around the collar and front, and finish the edges with a 1/2” hem.

The binding was a real faff to apply, and I didn’t like the finish.  In an attempt to press and shape the binding around the neckline, I had a complete disaster.  I pressed with a cool iron, through a towel - but the iron burped steam and damaged the velvet pile right in the front of the dress.  It looked like a permanent splash of liquid on the front.  In the end the only way to recover the situation was to deliberately and lightly steam-damage a wider area of the fabric, so that the single spot of damage was blended in.

I had already planned to decorate one shoulder with a beaded pattern, and this further distracts from the damage to the pile.

Definitely will make again, this time in a purple stretch velour.

Based on the poll results I posted a bit ago, I decided to make the dress and hope it fit my mom instead, and...surprise? It actually fits me (despite the pattern being misprinted). The waist does sit higher than it's meant to, but I think it looks fine! As I originally started to make this for my own wardrobe, I might selfishly keep it :P But I want to make matching bucket hats for my mom and I out of the leftover fabric, which has such a cool print that I'm sure she'll also enjoy :D

WIP WEDNESDAY

I’ve been playing with some FAM ideas for a while, especially Margo’s relationships with the other people in her life, like Emma! Here’s a little of something I’ve been working on (even though Wednesday was the other day). I don’t know if it will ever fully see the light of day, but it’s fun to mess around. It’s saved as “wrapdress” in my WIP folder

Tagging anyone who wants to share!

With a heavy sigh, Margo's arms dropped to her sides. 

Glancing between Margo and the equally offended hangers swaying on the rod, Emma's curiosity finally broke. "Is there something specific you're looking for?"

"I thought I had..." Margo's voice trailed off, looking at her clothes as if they had betrayed her. "Somethin's come up."

Emma's brow creased as confusion clouded her features—a question suspended on her lips.

Margo's discomfort was evident; her posture had gone rigid as she shifted uneasily. "I, uh…" her chin twitched with hesitation. "I'm meeting Sergei Nikulov later tonight."

Emma's eyes widened, flickering with intrigue. 

"Not." Margo held up her hand, needing to waylay the assumptions that were surely gaining momentum in Emma's mind. "Not for…" she sighed and defensively crossed her arms over her chest. "He and I need to have an honest conversation about this docking problem." Her eyes moved back to her clothes, hanging in her closet and continued, "Without his damn babysitter." 

Their eyes met, and the corner of Emma's mouth twitched into her cheek in a commiserative smirk. "So you've invited him..." The question was left unfinished, as Margo answered with a subtle nod, "Yep." 

Emma raised an eyebrow. She knew about Club 11:59 from almost the beginning. Having heard that Margo played the piano, she brought it up one day as she made small talk, trying to get to know the woman who had asked for her specifically to be the assistant to the Director of JSC. 

Margo stepped away from the shelf they were filling with technical manuals and design specs. "Did Molly tell you that?" 

Emma's brow furrowed; it was well known that there was tension between Margo and Molly, but she wondered why Margo would jump to that conclusion. "No," she answered honestly, looking over to Margo. Their conversation had been light and superficial, if not one-sided, as Emma had been doing most of the talking. "Uhm," she faltered in response to Margo's tense expression, knowing the truth could (probably would) be worse. "It was just something I heard," and then added, "a long time ago," for clarification.

Margo turned, putting one hand on her desk and the other on her hip. Her eyes narrowed. "Who?" Weary suspicion laced her tone. 

Emma's lips rolled under her teeth, shifting her weight uncomfortably as her eyes darted to the floor.

"I do...play piano," Margo's voice surprised her, and she looked back up in time to see the tension easing from Margo's face. "I'm classically trained, but I prefer," she faltered, lifting her hand to her ear, "I play jazz." 

They both inhaled. A mixture of relief and self-consciousness filled the space between them. "It was..." Emma cleared her throat, preparing herself for Margo's reaction. "It was Dr. VonBron who told me." 

Margo recoiled, her back straightening, clearly surprised. 

Wringing her hands, Emma continued, her words tripping out of her mouth. "I wouldn't have... I mean, I should have realized before I asked...it's private, obviously," she shrugged. "He told me, but I won't...." she hesitated again. "The only way for me to do this job well is if you trust me."

Margo's nod was subtle—accepting. 

"I would never," Emma added softly. 

A hint of something flickered across Margo's face as she turned toward the bookshelf. Emma watched her take a fortifying breath before going back to arranging books in a way that made sense to her. Her hand hovered over the box on Margo's desk, waiting until finally she reached in and plucked out another binder, which she placed next to the others on the shelf. They worked together in silence until the shelves were nearly full—until Margo's voice eased into the quiet. "I play at a jazz club sometimes. At night." They looked at one another. "It's something I do, for me...to clear my head."

Emma smiled. 

"Your dry-cleaning won't be ready until the end of the week," she offered as an explanation for the absence of whatever Margo was looking for. 

"Damnit," Margo muttered with an air of exasperation.
