18 Asian Americans and Latinos were killed in mass shootings at the beginning of the Lunar New Year. This was an attack on all Americans. This cannot be normalized. This cannot be tolerated. And it's not just about physical violence— it's about the larger violence perpetrated by our society, including the poverty, labor exploitation and mental illness many of us suffer, including the farm workers who were killed. Members of the AAPI community and allies held an interfaith vigil organized by @hailieforqueens to commemorate the victims of recent mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay but to also remind our society of this larger violence. We were joined by the Reverend Jordan Floro and family from Mosaic Church @mosaiccovnyc, Rabbi Mira Rivera of Lunar Collective and #JewsForAsians @JFREJNYC, teachers, students and local residents. Joined today's citywide gathering of AAPI community groups to address the growing epidemic of anti-Asian hate crimes, intolerance and racist violence. Flushing Town Hall hosted the annual Native American Social in collaboration with NativeTec, Ma's House & BIPOC Art Studio Inc., and Niamuck Land Trust featuring artwork, dancing, drumming, singing, shared stories and community building with fry bread. Representatives of the Matinecock, Shinnecock, and other indigenous Algonquin people danced in their traditional regalia to the beat of drums led by Ginew Benton and Young Blood Singers. The Social also featured special guest singer Jennifer Kreisberg from Ulali and artwork from Tecumseh Ceasar, Shane Weeks, Jeremy Dennis, and Dennis Redmoon Darkeem. We witnessed the opening of Shaku Ramen's new underground speakeasy, where you can arrange discreet dates or plan your next caper with delicious saki and soju selections.
