Heyo! Today I want to talk about source separation with fictive alters!

Let's start off with fictives are NOT their sources, and for someone outside the system to treat them as such - it's weird.

However not every alter has a separation from their source, and that's okay so I want to talk about this more using personal anecdotes from the Pony Plaza System!

Let's take Mabel, Mabel is a fictive from Gravity Falls and whilst we believe she's aware that she is separate from the character, she prefers to live as if she is the character. And there's no problem with that, she's silly and joyful and very happy living with the rest of the folks in Happy Smiles Land (one of our subgroups)

But then on the other side of the spectrum, we have Shy and Rainbow - they are fictive alters of Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony. They share similarities with their sources, sure BUT they are both boys and are completely different than them and don't view them as "this is me"

It's not always that cut and dry though, for example Finn is a fictive alter from Adventure Time. He doesn't think he is his source, but still doesn't know who he is entirely if he is not his source. Both Navi and Hina tend to get a lot derealization from existing seperate from their sources, Navi (Serial Experiments Lain) is gleefully delusional about not being real whilst Hina (Mafuyu Asahina from Project Sekai) often falls down an existential crisis every time she thinks about the reality of not being real.

So with those anecdotal examples, you can see that they all quite different from eachother despite being all fictive alters. The takeaway from this post is ALL fictive alters are different and have different ideas and preferences in terms of source separation - even when inside the same system. Assumptions with these disorder are never a good thing and you should always treat alters like the individuals they are.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Ah. Lord, NGE. The vagueness of its worldbuilding, the psychological aspects, the occult and religious simbology, and the GODDAMN MUSIC. If you like classical, epic and otherwordly music, I beg you to check out NGE's score even if you're not interested in the anime itself because Shiro Sagisu is a gift from the gods and one of the best composers of our time. The series is a masterpiece. People despise the movies but IMO they do exactly what a movie should do: entertain. Anno embraced the "I'll be cringe, but I'll be free" and went all out on them, as he should have. Also, there's Kaworu Nagisa. Look at him!

Steins;Gate

PLEASE. PLEASE DO AND DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF AT THE SAME TIME. I WAS NOT READY. This anime will take your heart, embrace it, warm it up, GRIP IT IN ITS HANDS, CHEW IT AND SPIT IT OUT. Admittedly I played the VN because I wanted to experience all endings and OH MY GOD. It's terrifying and emotionally damaging. I started playing the sequel (Steins;Gate 0) and I had to STOP because it's so gut-wrenching in all the good ways that I need to be in the right spot for it.

Bleach

talk about recent experiences. I live under a rock when it comes to popular anime most times, and I never had the occasion to watch Bleach until recently (still haven't technically finished it because I'm waiting for TYBW to finish releasing to watch it). I... don't know what it is about Bleach that I like so much, but it got me in a similar way to KHR, as in I think about it often against my will and I'm even considering creating an OC for it. I think it's the characters, because the story is pretty straightforward... yeah, yeah it's the fictional men again. Kubo makes handsome men who fight with swords and transformation and everyone has their own powerups and...hhhngh. Look at this batch of cookies.

I'm not a science brain, totally the opposite. Math doesn't math, geometry is evil and chemistry is wizardry. BUT, I love things that TRY to teach me those things in a funny and accessible way. I still won't understand them, but it was fun trying! And Dr. Stone has that, it's the moment I realize I like it when things are explained to me in that way, especially through media. Plus, fun characters, emotional moments, and cool plot.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn

Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your opinion on the show, KHR was the first ever japanese piece of media (excluding videogames) I've ever consumed. Being a lonely and socially awkward human being, it soon became my personality. It was these fuckers who made me get into manga altogether, I started buying the volumes (but only up to Varia Arc because 1. I didn't have an allowance, everything was done with Christmas/Easter/birthday money and 2. I was so obsessed with the Varia that my goldfish brain lost interest mid Future Arc.) and from there I discovered the pleasure of physical copies. The show has never aired in Italy, so nobody knew what the fuck I was talking about. It was, as many others were for me, a very lonely experience. But it was also the first time I felt... unique? Like, "this is my special little treasure and nobody can take it from me" kinda thing. I was emotionally invested in this show and every small piece of merch I could find like my Varia character songs CD became some of my most prized possessions (UNTIL I STARTED GIFTING AWAY MY SET OF VONGOLA RINGS BECAUSE I WANTED TO BRIBE PEOPLE INTO LIKING THE SHOW) (YEAH THAT WAS. STUPID. BECAUSE IT OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T WORK. AND ONLY MADE ME FEEL MORE LONELY AND RINGLESS) Then, the falling off. I started playing an MMO that also shaped part of my personality and as you often do with things that remind you of lonelier times, I sold my volumes and stopped thinking of KHR... until recently, when I joined this fandom and the spark came back because fuck it I'll be cringe but I'll be free. Serial Experiments Lain // review

After weeks of stalling and busy days, I am finally here to say I have finished watching Serial Experiments Lain! This was an experience I hope to never forget: it was unsettling, revealing, and definitely prophetic. I am going to share my journey with this anime, and that includes rambling a bit about my personal life. I hope you understand.

This anime followed me through many different points of my mind, in a way. When I first started watching it, I was the same Fujo that would spend days on end in front of a screen. However, due to burnout and overstimulation, I decided to gradually quit the internet. I know, I know… it sounds a bit much, doesn't it? Well, I am still using it to this day and I may never fully quit, but I don't want it to be my first go-to anymore. I don't know about the future of this blog, but I hope to continue writing here, even if I can't promise consistency.

Anyway, as I watched Lain get more into the Wired and its wonders and mysteries, I started seeing myself in her. I may be a noob when it comes to actual programming and tech itself, but I spent most of my late childhood and teenagehood in front of my computer, shutting myself from the outside world. I was socially awkward and didn't like the night life, so I just embraced the artificial warmth the internet provided me.

The anime really explores the way the digital world and the internet "connect" people, leaving them lonelier in the process. It's kinda sad how Lain, in the first episode, made me realize that a world before the internet did exist—one where you didn't have to jump to the computer as soon as you got back home, hoping to talk to people you've never met in real life (and probably never will.)

As she ventures into the Wired, you see her behavior slowly morph. From her usually shy and reserved composure comes out a more agressive and playful persona, almost like an avatar. Remember when the digital world was bound to your computer—and thus, to your home? Back then, we were still exploring the internet as a new, developing area and because of that, a lot of people still had their little veil of secrecy. I feel like with the creation of smartphones capable of handling social media, we've distorted the invisible wall between the digital realm and reality—and Lain portrays that perfectly.

I'm all over the place with this review, but Serial Experiments Lain really was made with love and care. I was meant to play (or at least watch a gameplay of) the PS1 game as well but I'm going to be honest: I wasn't too interested. Look, I am sure the game provides new lore that adds to everything, but the full gameplay video I found was 11 HOURS TOTAL. No way in hell I'm watching all that without my own personal hype. So sorry, @diowatcher, hope you forgive me, tee-hee!

Overall, I gave this an 8/10 for the surreal and existencial journey. Go watch it, but set your expectations accordingly. It is a slow-paced show but it's totally worth it 💜

What, you think this is gonna be a "lain-pilled" post? not really

The reason I like SEL so much is that it is very much an anti-boomer anime. What do I mean by anti-boomer? it's that it portrays the internet in a very neutral manner. Lots of boomer media/mentality talks about how technology is the devil and will kill human connection. Really dumb preachy stuff. Lain is one of the few old media that tries to portray the internet as is, both the 'good' and 'bad' parts, without making a statement.

To me, Lain is a surrealist art piece. A really good mishmash of visuals and audio with a few themes here and there. One could watch the anime just for novelty's sake; as in, watching something weird for the sake of watching something weird. It also helps that compared to other 'deep' anime, it really doesn't have any morals to push. So one could watch it and come up with their own interpretation.

This isn't a recommendation to watch it, just my feelings on this anime and a reaction to the whole Lain aesthetic that's gotten popular on the internet. If someone is lain-pilled, that means they like the internet. They don't have to be all esoteric about it. In fact, compare it to the attitude of the 80's and 90's, where there was an attitude of how the internet is very 'tubular' and an exciting new phenomenon.

In a way 'lain-pilled' people are like the 80's/90's people who thought the internet was all tubular and radical

i don't like the way people on the internet talk about serial experiments lain because way too many people who have seen it fall into one of two camps:

"this piece is way too smart for me i couldnt possibly analyze it i just sit back and bask in its intelligence. i am as an ant to it."

"this piece is trying to look smart but its abstractness and gestures at metaphor are just a mask for not saying anything at all."

both of which are terminally incurious and generally suck. sel is extremely forthcoming with its themes and opinions with even gentle prodding, but it's no doubt due to its reputation as this dense, cagey work that people aren't willing to give it even that, thus forming a feedback loop that causes discussions around the show to be far less than the sum of their parts. it's pretty unconventional and allegorical, but it isn't inscrutable. you just have to want to scrute it.

I've been watching serial experiments lain.

At first, I was like, "I actually understand this. I fucking get what she's going through" and atp I'm on the 9th episode and shes.... kinda not like me.

I both remember everything and nothing like everything kinda blends together. I remember more details than most people, but everyone seems to understand those details WAY better than I do.

favorite movie(s): It's so hard to pick, there are so many good ones! But I recently watched Tokyo Godfathers, that one automatically jumped in my top favourites. I also really liked Grave of Fireflies (even though it's quite a heavy movie), Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, The Handmaiden (let's go lesbians, let's go), Perfect Blue, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Jigsaw franchise (and honestly, I think the 10th movie might be my favourite), The Fear Street Trilogy, Coraline, What We Do In The Shadows, Train To Busan

Honorable mentions: I think Gremlins is starting to grow on me, especially the second movie because I love that the production team didn't take it all too seriously, I do like when some movies are self-aware how silly they actually are. Also shoutout to The Sadness. Am I ever going to watch that movie ever again? Probably not, it was a very disturbing movie. But this is not your usual zombie movie, if I can even call it a zombie movie, which surprised me? Like, it definitely does have those elements of the apocalyptic zombie genre but turned it completely over its head by making the infected actually aware of the things they're doing but not being able to stop it. Again, it is a disturbing movie, it's not for everybody. I personally don't see myself watching it twice. Plus, finding out that the director has said something like that he wanted to focus more on the "fun and the gore" other than anything else in a Q&A did sound quite sussy to me given the heavy topics and the ways the movie could be interpreted. Idk, as philology and literature major it just keeps getting confirmed to me that most, if not all works of art, no matter in what form, have something to say and they deeply reflect the time in which they were created, and there's always the subjectivity of the viewer who interprets it in their own way (like hell, even the superheroes in movies these days most likely take a whole lot of inspiration from Greek mythology, if you really think about it). Some people have mentioned that the director might have answered the way that he did as to not stir up controversy since it was at a festival, but I can't say for sure, I wasn't there to see the interview myself and this is already getting really long so I will stop now, you can make your own conclusions.

favorite series: Courage the cowardly dog, The Scooby-Doo franchise, Are You Afraid Of The Dark (I'm talking about the 90's series, I haven't watched the 2019 revival). Do I remember anything from them? Kind of, it's been a very long time since I've watched them. I kind of want to rewatch them because of it. But they sparked my interest in all things spooky when I was a kid so I feel like they deserve a place here. Some of my other favourites include: The Untamed, Serial Experiments Lain, Steins;Gate, Semantic Error, Another, My Roommate is a Detective, Wellington Paranormal, What We Do In The Shadows, Hellbound and Sweet Home (I do recommend reading the webtoons of those two, though), Death Parade, The Silent Sea, Color Rush, Squid Game, My Beautiful Man, Good Omens, Our Flag Means Death, Alice on Borderland, My Name, Yellowjackets, Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai

last song: Ruler Of My Heart by BL8M & Rubyeye & Unknown (Till The End) by AKUGETSU (Alien Stage OSTs) (tw for blood and a bit of gory imagery in the MVs for anyone who wants to check them out). Also can I also just talk about the 1st Anniversary Remixes of those two songs too!!! (here and here, audio only). Just *cheff's kiss*, I love those songs so much, I want to eat them. The story all these animations is quite interesting, the animations themselves are very well done too. How can I describe it. The story kind of takes that deadly game trope (like, let's say in the Hunger Games and Alice in Borderland), but make it about people being forced to be in a singing competition against each other to survive and they are being judged by aliens. From what I know, I could be wrong, the main way of storytelling is through the MVs on the VIVINOS YT channel so it does require a bit to analyze (there is a bit of a additional info on the official website and on the wiki, I'm sure), so if any of that sound interest you, I would recommend checking it out

currently reading: So Long, And Thank for All The Fish from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books. I'm so happy of how much progress I've done on reading those books compiled in one huge book, I'm halfway through the series now. And honestly I want to read it for as long as I can because I really enjoy it, it's so fun, I love the absurd situation the main characters fall into while the big question of the meaning of life, the Universe and everything looms over them. This would definitely go in one of my top books I've read I'm sure.

And I also have to mention the webtoons that I'm reading because I love them very much too: Hand Jumper, The Blind Prince, Lore Olympus, Zombie X Slasher (I don't know in what kind of direction this one would go, but so far so good!), Everything is Fine, Flawed Almighty, Homesick (I love love LOVE this one! The art style and everything is great), Never Ending Darling (I know that it's gonna end in like 2 days officially once the last episode is available to read for free, but damn, what a ride this was. The concept of this webtoon is terrifying), Omniscient Reader, My S-Class Hunters, ZOMGAN (also quite an interesting and honestly refreshing way of making a story about zombies), Nocturne and The Guy Upstairs

And special highlight to: There Are No Demons. This webtoon? An absolute nightmare fuel. I find it very interesting that the artist Nemo Nullus makes 3D models first and then draws over them. I wasn't so sure how to feel like it when I first saw it, this was the first time I've seen anything like it on webtoon, but I quickly grew to like this art style, the kind of weird realism and uncanny valley really add to the stories. And the stories themselves are very scary because these are things that could actually happen, and have most likely happened in real life too, especially that first story with the stalker. This webtoon has made me feel things no other horror/thriller webtoon has made me feel, I feel like I want to crawl out of my own body when I'm reading it, really.
