The Fixer is walking down the sleepy city streets. Her most recent night terror, the one about the consumption of her allies, has forced her to go out walking to clear her head. She can't go back to sleep; she feels uncomfortable in the apartment, so she's out walking. The streets are strangely calm for a Tuesday, with distant honking and loud talking elsewhere. Usually, the streets would be active at this hour with sidewalk activity. Perhaps it was a holiday she wasn't aware of? She couldn't be sure, but she didn't necessarily care either. The fewer obstructions, the better.

Margaret rounds a corner, meandering her way down the sloped road. She looks ahead at the corner store and wonders if she should look for a comfort snack. It was affordable… but the question was, what was she in the mood for?? Sweets sounded like a great idea. Maybe a box of honey buns, even. The Fixer waltzes inside, mask on entirely because she's too lazy to push it to the side. She then walks down the aisle, grabs a box of honey buns, and brings it to the nervous-looking cashier.

“W-will that be all ma'am?”

“Yep”

“Uhh… th-three ninty f-five.”

Margaret hands over a five dollarbill, and the cashier breaks it down to return change.

“H-here ya go m-ma'am.”

“Thanks.” The Fixer begins to walk away… but the cahsier stops her.

“W-wait! Before you go… I… I'd be careful o-out there if I were you.”

“Why? Not like whatevah happens in dis city isn't th’ norm these days. I can handle it.”

“N-no, no. There's… there's been people goin’ missing lately. Not just people either, dogs too! Man came in t’ say dat hisndog went missin’ one night and… when he did find ‘em again… it was flat.” The man went pale.

“Flat??” The Fixer tilted her head. “Sounds like roadkill t’ me. Dat happens all th’ time.”

“No. Not roadkill flat. Hollowed out like skin bag kinda f-flat…”

Behind the mask, Margaret furrows her brows. She'd seen that before around here. Only once. The fact that this man before her was telling the exact same visual that she saw… meant it was getting worse.

“Damn… Well, guess I'm keepin’ my eyes peeled. What about you? Ain't chu worried ‘bout clockin’ out?”

“O-oh uhh… I’ve got overnight shift, s-so I… I'll be here til sun up.”

“Mm.” Margaret nodded affirmatively. “Much luck to ya.” It was all the Fixer would say before exiting the corner store.

She took a breath, breathing in the cool summer air… then sighed. It was probably better to head back home than continue down the road any further. The streets were emptied, and whatever this was was getting bolder as time went on. So, the Fixer begins traveling up the road again as traffic whizzes by. The sidewalks barely have anyone on them, and the sounds of distant conflict are… nonexistent. It was eerie, really, to see these streets so devoid of the usual hustle and bustle.

Margaret makes it halfway back home, watching the cars pass and peering into the windows of restaurants full of joyful atmosphere. She hadn't noticed it before, but somewhere along the way, a dreadful feeling began to build in her gut. It started about a block or two back. She wasn't sure what to make of it, but she noticed that Shade became increasingly restless as time passed. Asking about it only got her ‘Watch the shadows. Beware the hounds.’ Short, cryptic messages. Wonderful! What was getting Margaret, though, was that Shade never displayed fear for anyone. And yet… here she was on high alert.

Margaret steals a quick glance down a damp passageway as she passes. She felt the need to look to ensure something wasn't following or watching her this entire time. Luckily, it was empty, and the alley after that was also empty. On the third, she couldn't be so sure. It looked like a trashbag left just outside the amber light on the wall.

On the other hand... it looked like a wet heap. The Fixer swallows thickly and begins to speed up. Maybe it was a discarded pile of cardboard boxes that got wet somehow. However, Margaret remembers that it hadn't rained since one day last week, and this slope wouldn't be able to guide water from a hydrant down these alleyways. She thought it better to put it out of her mind and press on. They were almost there.

Speed walking became a steady jog. She could see the end of the block, her apartment just around the corner. She was almost there, ready to call it for the night… when a peculiar sound hit her ears. A small “yip”. Every part of her body demanded that she keep going, especially Shade, pressuring the young woman to continue moving forward. But she was compelled to stop. Margaret pauses, her jog dragging to a halt as she looks behind her to see…
