under the cut will be a full post explaining (almost) all of the choices i made in the process of making my tetro normal album art series now that ive finished it, as well as things i dislike about the finished products and what i might change. enjoy!

1 -- suburbia / chiba

this is one of my least favorites, but it makes sense as this was my first one PLUS i drew it while actively having an anxiety attack/mental breakdown while trying to hide it because i was on vc 😭

on the positive side, i really enjoy my color choices on chiba! her hair looks WONDERFUL, the background not so much ... !! idk what id change really.

suburbia chiba was one of the first ones i decided for this project. it fit her SO well, from the happy town turned bloodbath to the "blonde, blue-eyed baby" line. my initial plan for this piece was to have chiba walking/skipping down a classic suburban street covered in blood and guts, but i couldnt get it to look right, so we got this. i ended up making a magazine just for sillies :P

the quote i chose for this piece was "It takes a village to fake a whole culture. Your ear to the playground, your eye on the ball. Your head in the gutter, your brains on the wall." i chose this because the eye on the ball/brains on the wall line encapsulates the feeling of the song i wanted this piece to represent, as well as the first part of the quote which i really wanted to include.

2 -- 222 isono

choosing a character for 222 was surprisingly hard??? i fully believe that okazaki fits this song better but ... laplace's angel .............. isono was the cloest.

besides that there's just something about this piece that feels wrong. might be the color pallet or the way i rendered the hair. it just feels ..... off. i dont like it.

there are many references in the posters !!! the first one is meant to imply the shape of noose, the next one is chiba's piece, the 3rd is an inside joke between my friends (mizucest ..), and the last one is a sticker in the server i drew this on vc with! i really dont have much else to say about this piece. not the worst but definitely not the best.

the quote i chose here was "Now to row, row, row my boat over the falls. and maybe wake up from but a dream." i felt this was the lyric from the song that best fit isono, so i chose it.

3 -- laplace okazaki

i dont think i need to explain why i chose okazaki for this one. just look at the lyrics.

the dotted line across her neck represents kamimua, and the red string tied around her waist represents tsuno. i may have chose red string bc of the red string of fate and okazakis odd homoerotic villain yearning for tsuno ..... maybe ............

this one im not as happy with just because i didnt really include the song at all. it was just .... okazaki. if i were to redo it i'd definitely add a much more apparent reference to laplace's angel. overall, not bad, but couldve been better.

i was initially going to choose "it doesnt take a killer to murder, it only takes a reason to kill," for this, but i decided to go for something i bit more fun, "If you were in my shoes, you’d see I wear the same size as you."

4 - i/me/myself wada

oughhh wada :(

this was really the point where i think this series took off and got GOOD. experimenting with collage elements here really helped make this one stand out.

the reason i chose wada is pretty obvious - tfem wada :( poor girl never got her awakening ..... sigh

this was one of the fastest ones to make, but all of them only took about an hour each. this one was very unrendered, but i still like how it looks. i love this one, no notes!

"I wish I could be a girl, and really, I'd prefer it if you would use I/Me/Myself," the classic line of the final chorus. not really any hidden meanings or anything.

5 - better than the alternative watari

this one was straight fire, no pun intended. the hands are meant to represent her siblings, clinging onto her for dear life. the hand on her head is meant to represent her mother. the candle shes protecting represents her livelihood :3 i love this piece a lot. no notes!

the quote i chose was "She’s gonna be a lot like me, but I don’t wanna be at all like me," the context of this lyric in the song is the speaker character talking about their daughter, but in this context i thought of it more as watari and one of her younger siblings. sigh ily watari

6 - oultliars ken

this one. this one. i have so much to say.

first of all, i had some deliberation between ken outliars and ken laplace but im REALLY glad i ended up doing outliars bc i love this piece. as soon as the idea of a worm borrowed into his eye came to me i was obsessed.

the worm is blue to represent how kamimura would never leave his mind, even after he died. i remembered seeing an excerpt from the odyssey while searching for stuff for wada's piece, so i dug it out and used it here. i really love this one. it might be my favorite. this one is so fun ......

7 - blackbox warrior hiroaki

okay this one is my least favorite so im not gonna talk about it much. i genuinely hate this one so much its not even funny

the idea was good but i .... just didnt execte it well. sorry. the ivs tying into a noose was cool tho

i chose the quote "You've lost your mind and almost lost your life before, so you'll be fine," in reference to hiroakis suicide attempt in canon.

this one is my actual favorite, right next to ken's. i don't really have much to say, just ... ough. kamimur.

the "bled out in the bath" line of the song really caught my eye, and it gave me the inspo for this piece! i really relate to kamimura in a lot of ways, so this one was kinda personal for me. i think it turned out really well!! i dont really have much else to say lol

9 - love me normally ojima

this ones a bit boring, but i still enjoy it! i was intending to do something a lot more ... colorful. but i think this still conveys the message i wanted.

fuck ..... ojima ........ again, i relate to him a LOT so this one was kinda personal as well, just less than kamimuras. i wish i had a bit more obvious inspo from the song, but thats about it. love you (normally) ojima <3

10 - memento mori hayashi

i had a REALLY hard time with this one, and if im being honest i still dont like the composition or pose. bleh. i dont even want to look at it 😭

the perspective is entirely wrong, and it .. sorta tells the story i wanted? i really needed to show the horror in her expression tho ... i think that was the main problem.

the book page is from the raven by edgar allen poe, and if im being honest i just searched for morbid book pages on pinterest 😭🙏

aaaand thank you! this is the end :) i really wanna do something like this again, maybe with tdrb. this was incredibly fun even if i dont like how most of the paintings came out. after all, for every masterpiece that artist has 100 fucking horrific artworks <3

So personally i dont think they really liked each other in the academy years (despite me wtiting fic where they sorta did whoops🤪), although the the foundation was there and they maybe might not have fully realized the depth of how much they cared. It truly was platonic, because they didnt bother to imagine it as much else.

When does Gray’s cognition of his own feelings start? I think when he meets her on the train to Paris. He is confronted with this grown up, beautiful woman that he cant reconcile with the girl he used to know. He’s attracted, but hes held back because of the way he used to view her. And he doesnt get enough time to work through any of this, obviously, due to the arrest & memory wipe debacle🫣

We can point to the opera ep as the first sign of overt interest. Gray has no memory of their baggage/friendship to have any reservations about pursuing Carmen. The only knowledge he has at his disposal is the fact that here’s this pretty lady in front of him, and that he can do something about it or not. Its not messy. Not from his POV at least. (But carmen’s!! Oof!!)

Where it gets complicated for Gray is obviously when he gets his memories *back.* Its obviously a high-stakes moment when he does because he goes from ACME custody to being back in VILE’s grip. A lot is happening, leaving not much time to contend with his feelings.

But now its confusing, because he *knows* he was attracted to Carmen in Sydney. He was pretty obvious about it, too. She hadnt seemed uninterested. But she also left him in the dark about quite obviously a lot.

But now Gray also remembers their old relationship and what Carm used to mean to him, back when she was blacksheep. Aka a little sister figure. Heres where it gets weird for him. Now, Gray’s a side character, so we dont get to see his internal struggle with how to view her like we do from Carmen. But i absolutely believe he went theough the same thing. Its messy AF here because Gray’s working out not only the dichotomy of his feelings towards carmen and balcksheep, but hes also fitting that in with his own choice to stay with VILE and the knowledge that she purposefully let him live a lie for more than a year.

By the time the Himalayas roll around, i think its clear hes set aside any ill feelings towards her. Contrary to (popular?) opinion, I dont think hes fully accepted that he loves her (romantically) yet. but Gray IS clear on the fact that she means the world to him, and that he doesnt wanna put her in harms way ever again. That confrontation ends the way it does, aka…explosively 😗 (dont block me pls).

Gray is left thinking that theyll be on the outs now forever.

Only for VILE to yank Carmen back into the fold. Suddenly, Gray is presented with everything hes ever wanted: the two of them not at odds but side by side. From the start, he feels odd about it, having gone through mindwiping himself, but he doesnt tell her the truth for the same reason Carmen didnt tell him: He truly believes this is the safest option for her, being under VILE’s wing instead of galivanting around as public enemy number 1.

During Evil!Carm’s 6 months back with VILE, he and Evil!Carm are BFFs and partners in crime again. She has no memories of him except from the island, so she doesnt remember him ever showing romantic intetest in her. Gray forces himself to be happy about having Carmen back and tamps down any new, alien feelings.

Due to 6 months transpiring off screen i think im allowed to interpret what happened there as i like 🙂‍↔️ so i think Evil!Carmen flirts with him at times. Tbf, She flirts with everyone, its one of the “carmen” tendencies that the mindwiping didnt bother circumventing. But its different when its with him, because of what they already obviously mean to one another. Its not harmless. Evil Carmen is devoid of empathy for much, but she still has a soft spot with Gray.

When she shows any romantic inclination, Gray is reminded of his own repressed feelings for her. I’d like to think that he flirts back (its his personality) but he shuts it down from ever escalating further out of his own version of the “sHeS lIkE a SiStEr To mE” crash out, because hes confused not only about THIS but also if carmens really fully there to begin with. It feels wrong, initiating things with someone who isnt fully themself.

I think when hes confronted with his internal want to reciprocate whatever Carmens trying to do is when hes forced to realize: Hes loves her, and not in a friend way. So to answer your question, i think he mostly realizes sometime during the 6 months evil period. Closer towards the end i would say.

All the while, his discomfort with allowing her to remain mindwiped builds and builds upon itself. When Gray catches Carmen crossing lines she swore to never cross, lines that she literally upended his and her own lives for, thats when he finally makes up his mind to save her.

Gray, when hes fully himself, is not someone who does the right thing. None of VILE are. For whatever reason, life shaped him into a person who discards morals when they get in the way of his personal advancement. But the one wild card in the face of his standard motivations is the lady in red. The one thing that confuses him more than anything else is what he feels for Carmen.

For so much of the show, Gray and Carmen are at odds, even if he doesnt even know it, split apart by their different outlooks on life. But in the end, Gray chooses her over himself.

When he helps bring her memories, he doesnt mind dying (by her hand or VILE’s should he fail), getting arrested, being kicked out of the only thing close to a family hes got, as long as it means he can bring her back. And he isnt doing it so that he can have a relationship with her guilt-free. Even when things work out, even when the opportunity for reconciliation is offered, Gray makes the active choice to walk away. He believes that whatever they have, no matter how much it means to him, is too broken to fix. (Biased but, BS i say!)

Although Gray may have realized his feelings for Carmen earlier, i think this is the point where he fully *accepts* them. At the very, very end, where the possibility of meeting her again is banished.

Sylus didn't really think it'd be his scene. There's really nothing that you can do actively besides pay attention and at least if it comes down to who calls out first Sylus' reflexes are crazy fast so he's able to get you your prize when you do get bingo. He just likes to spend time with you but somehow ends up befriending a lot of the people who are hanging out at the bingo hall. Now everyone loves it when the two of you come to bingo because it means they can talk to Sylus, and Sylus doesn't mind too much as long as they don't mind talking to him while he sits next to you. If he wins you get the prize, or he'll just buy you the prize outright from somewhere else.

Rafayel could totally get into it. Even if he doesn't really present as it sometimes, he can get really competitive against just you at first, then it escalates. He starts deciding he needs to win, genuinely looking upset to you when he doesn't have a number they've called out. He doesn't really even care about the prize - he just likes the idea of winning or at least getting a line or something. He'll just give the prize to a random person if you don't want it since he doesn't really care much for it as well.

I think Mammon loves the vibes as well. He loves the energy and anything that mildly resembles gambling is something he's willing to try out at least once so he'll come. He doesn't take it too seriously and just has fun with it, deciding to come with you whenever you're doing a bingo night. He definitely keeps the prize though. Doesn't matter what it is.

First of all yeah i suppose ur right player might not be white, although i dont think its so clear cut and that hes pretty ambiguous, and ambiguous characters still can get the benefit of being mistaken as white. I dont think hes definitely not white either tho. Hes VA-ed by a white guy and ofc va races dont matter but i think its worth pointing out that most of the CS cast matches the ethnicity of their character.

I can understand enjoying him for his close relationship with carmen. They have a unique friendship that is unlike whats commonly depicted in media.

I wanna say i always liked player he just wasnt one of my favorites so seeing his popularity in fanon took me aback a bit.

One thing i find confusing about what u say js that u admit Player is pretty static/generic in canon but then u say hes not enjoyed for just being the nearest generic guy? I get that people in fanon have added a lot of depth to him, but doesnt the initial interest to flesh him out show that something about his initial archetype helped? There are plenty of static characters in the show who had potential to be more, but player is the one fixated on.

I can accept that people love carmen and love player by proxy for what their relationship is. They see the potential in his archetype and are inspired to bring it to fruition in fanon.

At the aame time, if we acknowledge the complex reasons why people like Player, i wish people would do the same with other characters and that the “u only like them bc theyre a white male side character” would die. For me this is relation to gray but it applies to any eho enjoy chase and mimebomb or whoever else.

I respect ur opinion but i disagree that most redcrackle shippers/gray enjoyers only like him bc hes the nearest generic guy. Firstly, i dont think gray is rlly generic. Hes fleshed out to an extent that is actuallt rare in this show, and has a unique storyline compared to all else. Secondly, if the goal was to ship carmen with the closest generic guy, Zack x Carmen or Chase x Carmen wouldnt be so obscure in the fandom (i jnow that carchase anon is infamous but theyre still a minority).

The narrative itself puts Gray and Carmen in a romantic light and asks u to think about them from that perspective given the whole date debacle. Granted, carmen also says hes like a brother to her, but i just saw a take that said, carmen and gray’s relationship shows how the lines between familial, platonic, and romantic can often be toed/blended. I think this makes a lot of sense for them. Especially for Carmen given how she grew up on the island. She was very isolated and had no good concept of personal relationships. Of course people arent obligated to ship them because of this, but for the people that do, we’re not pulling it out of thin air. There is canon basis on why this ship is liked.

Another thing, yes, people who enjoy gray usually only talk about him regarding his relationship with carmen, but thats because she takes up the vast majority of character interaction. Even tigress has more going on for her than just her relationship with carmen. She has paper star, she has cleo. Gray is kinda cutoff from the narrative to an extent that u cant talk about him without talking about carmen. The second closest character to him is tigress, which is crazy considering how little they interact. Its different for characers like player or julia who do get that non-carmen interaction.

I guess im curious for u to expand on that point of why u think carmen and gray are only enjoyed bc grays just the most readily available guy.

Edit; also something i wanna add - something i think that was lost in my initial message - i dont get the player hype but im not necessarily trying to say that i think hes only hyped cuz hes a white (?) male side character. Of course not. I think that whole argument is dumb, but given this fandom’s discourse, i feel like hes the one for which that whole discussion could apply best to (my opinion, not objective fact). And for the record i dont even really agree with that discourse because carmen is by far the most popular character in the show. Julia is very well liked by most of the fandom and everyone loves shadowsan. The only character that has more hype than julia is player. I dont think the “non white characters are pushed aside for the white side characters” argument rlly works for the CS fandom, not that im against the message of that discourse.

Ultimately, i do see where you are coming from on why you like him, and i think its unfair in general to try and reduce why other people like a character to certain aspects like this. Sorry if i came across like that. But also i think that there should be a space to call out possible fandom biases in respectful way. Or at least point out hypocrisies.

I remember there was a discussion a while back about the CS fandom paying more attention to its white male side characters than its main character poc women. It was about mime bomb mostly and maybe chase and gray. I agreed with the sentiment but didnt rlly get the criticism cuz i never got the vibe that the fandom was overly obsessed with any of those characters. However, i feel like it can apply to player. everyone else is giving their take on this so I feel as if I should too. I am angry about burt and irving now having two almost-kisses and them still finding a reason for them to never close that gap. like, yea it makes narrative sense that neither of those scenes contained a kiss, it's compelling even, if I view it objectively I actually love that because I care deeply about these characters and want them to be written realistically and with nuance.

but I am not gonna sit here and pretend that I'm fine with how this compares to the straight couples that have had so much more this season. if burt and irving's story existed in a bubble where markhelly and all the rest didn't serve as points of comparison I don't think I'd be half as upset at the way this ended. I'd be able to appreciate the impact of their being unable to kiss TWICE now in different universes because of forces outside of their control without looking across at every. single. other. couple. who are all straight. and going. why do they get that and we don't. why is it only the gay couple that have to be written "realistically" where they're still not ready to kiss. why can allowances and indulgences be made for dramatic effect for EVERYONE except them. I don't know if it's intentional homophobia, or queerbait, or if they're really just that squeamish about the idea of two old men kissing each other, but the double standard is there no matter the motivation behind it. and when you combine that with irving's innie being effectively killed off four episodes into the second season, and now his outie potentially written out of the show too, all I'm saying is it becomes hard to give them the benefit of the doubt.

we're all aware john turturro may not return for another season and that's why they felt the need to wrap up irving's two storylines somehow so they weren't left on a loose end should he decide not to come back, and I get that, and I'm glad there was some sense of finality to it, but then why not allow us just this one thing. just one moment of indulgence. because it might actually be our, and their, last chance. would it have killed them to just let them kiss this one time if there was a chance we'd never see them again, a chance they'd never see each other again. the truth is, no, it wouldn't have been hard at all. but they still made the decision to withhold that. because they can't allow us or them even the most basic kindness whilst handing the straight couples everything on a silver platter.

I'm not gonna get into the pacing issues of their relationship this season, how we jumped from them shyly asking each other out on another date to burt carrying out the hit on irving, how there feels like a missing scene in between those two events, because that relates to a wider problem with the structure of the show itself that is beyond the scope of this criticism. but i think it's telling that rather than giving us that extra time with them, they took a whole episode away from our main cast where even cobel got to kiss a one off male character that we will never hear from or see of again, and the supposed flagship romance of season 1 can't even get that. at what point am I allowed to call that thing in the corner that looks, acts, and talks like a duck a fucking duck?

if it sounds like I'm bitter, and jealous, it's because I am. because whether or not the double standard is intentional or not, it's still there. and I really did think a show that was able to present such special, compelling, meaningful queer characters would be a little more self aware about the message they're sending. and it fucking sucks that this has become just another show where I have to swallow my frustration and accept that they're not writing this for me. I and my fellow queer audience will never be the priority. even now we are still begging for scraps
