everyone else is giving their take on this so I feel as if I should too. I am angry about burt and irving now having two almost-kisses and them still finding a reason for them to never close that gap. like, yea it makes narrative sense that neither of those scenes contained a kiss, it's compelling even, if I view it objectively I actually love that because I care deeply about these characters and want them to be written realistically and with nuance.

but I am not gonna sit here and pretend that I'm fine with how this compares to the straight couples that have had so much more this season. if burt and irving's story existed in a bubble where markhelly and all the rest didn't serve as points of comparison I don't think I'd be half as upset at the way this ended. I'd be able to appreciate the impact of their being unable to kiss TWICE now in different universes because of forces outside of their control without looking across at every. single. other. couple. who are all straight. and going. why do they get that and we don't. why is it only the gay couple that have to be written "realistically" where they're still not ready to kiss. why can allowances and indulgences be made for dramatic effect for EVERYONE except them. I don't know if it's intentional homophobia, or queerbait, or if they're really just that squeamish about the idea of two old men kissing each other, but the double standard is there no matter the motivation behind it. and when you combine that with irving's innie being effectively killed off four episodes into the second season, and now his outie potentially written out of the show too, all I'm saying is it becomes hard to give them the benefit of the doubt.

we're all aware john turturro may not return for another season and that's why they felt the need to wrap up irving's two storylines somehow so they weren't left on a loose end should he decide not to come back, and I get that, and I'm glad there was some sense of finality to it, but then why not allow us just this one thing. just one moment of indulgence. because it might actually be our, and their, last chance. would it have killed them to just let them kiss this one time if there was a chance we'd never see them again, a chance they'd never see each other again. the truth is, no, it wouldn't have been hard at all. but they still made the decision to withhold that. because they can't allow us or them even the most basic kindness whilst handing the straight couples everything on a silver platter.

I'm not gonna get into the pacing issues of their relationship this season, how we jumped from them shyly asking each other out on another date to burt carrying out the hit on irving, how there feels like a missing scene in between those two events, because that relates to a wider problem with the structure of the show itself that is beyond the scope of this criticism. but i think it's telling that rather than giving us that extra time with them, they took a whole episode away from our main cast where even cobel got to kiss a one off male character that we will never hear from or see of again, and the supposed flagship romance of season 1 can't even get that. at what point am I allowed to call that thing in the corner that looks, acts, and talks like a duck a fucking duck?

if it sounds like I'm bitter, and jealous, it's because I am. because whether or not the double standard is intentional or not, it's still there. and I really did think a show that was able to present such special, compelling, meaningful queer characters would be a little more self aware about the message they're sending. and it fucking sucks that this has become just another show where I have to swallow my frustration and accept that they're not writing this for me. I and my fellow queer audience will never be the priority. even now we are still begging for scraps

Week 22

Date: 6/21/18

How Far Along: 212W+2  Sex: Baby Boy Weight Gain: I’m up to 129. i started pre-pregnancy at 128- this is slightly higher than my normal weight, but I was on fertility meds, so it makes sense it was up. At my 8 week appointment I was back to my normal weight of 123 and stayed there until my 16 week appointment when I was 124. so I guess I would say I’ve gained 6 pounds so far, since that’s closer to what my “normal” would be. I plan on buying a cheap scale soon so I can keep a closer eye on it since my appointments are still 4 weeks apart.

Stretch Marks: Just the boobs.

Maternity Clothes: Yep, though today I’m in all normal clothes (with a belly band!). There is a girl in my building who is exactly a week behind me and she is still in all of her normal clothes and I’m a bit jealous. I’m so glad I have a bump and “look” pregnant, but expected most of my clothes to last a bit longer than they ended up lasting... I expect in the next 2-4 weeks I won’t be able to wear my normal t-shirts without stretching them out pretty bad...  Sleep: Not terrible. I get up between 2-5 every morning to pee. I’ve been waking up before my alarm, which is something I have never done before. I kind of like it. Makes getting up a little easier. Here’s hoping I’ll become a morning person once the little guy gets here. Hubs is a night owl so it would be great if I could transition and have us covered on baby care most of the time! Best Moment This Week: He’s finally getting active! And I just love it. It’s late at night or early in the morning when he gets to kicking. I love talking to him as he is moving around. I also had a dream last night that he had a twin (no, not happening!) but seeing his little face in my dream was so sweet. he was about 3 and asking for some orange juice. IDK, I just feel like he’s becoming more “real”. We started the nursery, he has a crib! And we are soooo close to viability! I don’t have any concerns with early labor, but it will be SO NICE to know that only in a few short weeks if something were to happen he could reasonably survive it. I’m just having a lot of really great emotions about him this week, and it’s awesome #hormones 

Worst Moment This Week: Travel sucks, but I have a month+ without travel, so that’s good! Other than that I have had a few rounds of random anxiety. Over literally nothing. I just feel stressed and clammy and a little “freaked out” is the best way i can describe it. I have gotten this real fear of postpartum depression that has been hanging over my head for a bit now. I’m thinking now that I can feel him I’m realizing he’s actually coming and WE HAVE TO KEEP HIM ALIVE once he is in the real world. we will be the only people there to protect him and what if my brain messes up and I can’t do that?!?! See, a lot of anxiety.  Miss Anything: Don’t laugh, but I actually miss the baby. Like, I want him here so badly. Pregnancy is great and beautiful and I’m SO thankful I get to experience it since there was a chance I couldn’t... but I just want him here. I dont want 17ish more months of tummy time, I want real cuddles and kisses. Movement: Thank God yes, and I love every second of it. He is a night owl/early bird so I usually feel him in bed or when I’m getting ready to bed or up in the morning. I still don’t feel the little flutters (thanks anterior placenta) but he is strong enough now that am getting the big movements. It’s been pretty much every day since Sunday that I’ve legit felt the big kicks. I can see them sometimes as well, which I REALLY love.  

Symptoms: My back really bothered me yesterday. and goodness gracious the leg cramps have gotten me. the most annoying part is no one knows why this happens, just a pregnancy mystery. rude. I’m worried I’m getting a lot of these 3rd trimester pains early.. so the next 17 weeks are going to be a challenge!

Cravings: Still nothing.. I want things... but never anything like “I HAVE TO HAVE THIS RIGHT NOW” Like you see on movies or hear people talk about.  Queasy or Sick: Nope, still feeling good. Have You Started To Show Yet: That’s a big fat yes. People at work and strangers 100% know what’s happening up in here! Labor Signs: Nope Belly Button In or Out? Still stretching. I feel like I just need to call it an outy and be done with it. It’s so weird how soft that skin is since it’s usually not shown the elements! Wedding Rings On or Off? On Happy or Moody Most of the Time: Happy most of the time I think Looking Forward To: Time to just keep passing. we had a lot of big things in the last month to look forward to that made the time fly by. I’m worried now that those are done time will slow down. I really am wishing this pregnancy away, because I just want my baby! I mean, we have literally nothing ready... but I want him so bad! So I’m just looking forward to his continued growth and movement. Keeping going Kid, I need you big and strong!

I spent the whole night trying all the websites that my friends told me about. The shocking fact is that many of them refused to give me a quote because I hold an international license, not a UK one. Even those websites which accepted that requested a huge amount of money (i.e. not less than 1, 200-1, 600) which is much higher than the price of the car itself. I wonder if there's a way to sort this out or if there's any alternative solution that saves money for me. I don't want to go through any further driving tests in the UK. I would like to purchase my own car for everyday driving. I have heard of ways to get around this, such as getting listed as a secondary driver and having my dad as the primary driver and just me as a temporary driver. I don't think it would matter though, I doubt it is risky that if I did need a claim they would investigate how much I had the car... But what my dad seems to think is that he can only have a certain amount of cars listed as him as primary. My mom and dad live together and together own a 1994 Intrepid, 2003 Cadillac CTS and a 1988 Corvette (that is insured for only 5 months a year, stored in the winter). I am only insured as a temporary driver on the Intrepid as it is too expensive for anything else. I also have a 21 year old sister who is in the same situation (lives at home for 4 months a year) but she has just bought her own car and is her own primary driver. So I don't think that should affect me at all, it is cheap enough for a female to get primary insurance at this age. So now I want to buy a sports car. I am 100% sure I want to buy a car that is not common, its just something I am stubborn about and so I know that insurance will be more this way. this better not be the last we see of Irv because we still literally don’t know anything about his outtie or why he was investigating Lumon. we didn’t even see his outtie relationship with Burt develop. like I get that theyre going for “love transcends severance” but like theyre outties are still somewhat different. did theyre outties get to know another off-screen? or did the love just transcend severance so much that I don’t even need to bother seeing them fall in love again, even tho theyre aren’t entirely the same ppl. like did they have an affair off-screen? why did we skip over this? meanwhile mark and helly and banging it out. even tho I rlly don’t think they’re romantic chemistry is rlly there tbh (that’s probably me personally tho). but anyway despite this, mark and helly’s relationship gets all this focus, taking time away from actually investigating lumon… which they teased outtie irv doing..only to never pick up this plot line???

I honestly think how they handled Burt and Irv this ep made sense. I’m not mad that they didn’t kiss. I actually hate when stories when the romantic chemistry between the characters isn’t there (lwk how I feel abt markhelly cough cough) but I’m annoyed with the choosing to skip over their outties relationship developing.

During the whole montage with Dylan getting in the elevator, Ms Huang getting on the bus, and Irv getting on the train, i thought they were all gonna turn back so something. but then no. like are mark and Helly gonna be the only characters in the finale? Did half the cast let get written out??!?

like theres still next weeks finale where is could all come together but why we treating our other protagonists like this bruh

everyone else is giving their take on this so I feel as if I should too. I am angry about burt and irving now having two almost-kisses and them still finding a reason for them to never close that gap. like, yea it makes narrative sense that neither of those scenes contained a kiss, it's compelling even, if I view it objectively I actually love that because I care deeply about these characters and want them to be written realistically and with nuance.

but I am not gonna sit here and pretend that I'm fine with how this compares to the straight couples that have had so much more this season. if burt and irving's story existed in a bubble where markhelly and all the rest didn't serve as points of comparison I don't think I'd be half as upset at the way this ended. I'd be able to appreciate the impact of their being unable to kiss TWICE now in different universes because of forces outside of their control without looking across at every. single. other. couple. who are all straight. and going. why do they get that and we don't. why is it only the gay couple that have to be written "realistically" where they're still not ready to kiss. why can allowances and indulgences be made for dramatic effect for EVERYONE except them. I don't know if it's intentional homophobia, or queerbait, or if they're really just that squeamish about the idea of two old men kissing each other, but the double standard is there no matter the motivation behind it. and when you combine that with irving's innie being effectively killed off four episodes into the second season, and now his outie potentially written out of the show too, all I'm saying is it becomes hard to give them the benefit of the doubt.

we're all aware john turturro may not return for another season and that's why they felt the need to wrap up irving's two storylines somehow so they weren't left on a loose end should he decide not to come back, and I get that, and I'm glad there was some sense of finality to it, but then why not allow us just this one thing. just one moment of indulgence. because it might actually be our, and their, last chance. would it have killed them to just let them kiss this one time if there was a chance we'd never see them again, a chance they'd never see each other again. the truth is, no, it wouldn't have been hard at all. but they still made the decision to withhold that. because they can't allow us or them even the most basic kindness whilst handing the straight couples everything on a silver platter.

I'm not gonna get into the pacing issues of their relationship this season, how we jumped from them shyly asking each other out on another date to burt carrying out the hit on irving, how there feels like a missing scene in between those two events, because that relates to a wider problem with the structure of the show itself that is beyond the scope of this criticism. but i think it's telling that rather than giving us that extra time with them, they took a whole episode away from our main cast where even cobel got to kiss a one off male character that we will never hear from or see of again, and the supposed flagship romance of season 1 can't even get that. at what point am I allowed to call that thing in the corner that looks, acts, and talks like a duck a fucking duck?

if it sounds like I'm bitter, and jealous, it's because I am. because whether or not the double standard is intentional or not, it's still there. and I really did think a show that was able to present such special, compelling, meaningful queer characters would be a little more self aware about the message they're sending. and it fucking sucks that this has become just another show where I have to swallow my frustration and accept that they're not writing this for me. I and my fellow queer audience will never be the priority. even now we are still begging for scraps
