Publishing has always been a fucking nightmare, but now it’s a layer of hell. It’s not enough that writers be good at what they do. Writers have to maintain an active social media presence and cultivate a following. Be available.

They have to be conventionally attractive enough to look good enough to see on a screen, aesthetically pleasing, kind, funny, up-to-date on trends, socially aware but not so controversial that they turn off a brand from California from slapping their discount code on a video promoting a book.

They have to do all of this with no media training, with little help from the companies that are supposed to be doing this for them.

Of course, a lot of this isn't possible for say, the 40-something mother of two who teaches English at a school and writes on the side. She’s boxed out of an already complex industry that already has enough walls.

On some level, I think authors have always marketed themselves a little, but we’ve reached such a crazy point where we’re demanding the author become the influencer. Accessibility in publishing has narrowed from an inch to a sliver. And that inch was hard enough to get in as is.

I think the funniest thing about scogan to me is that if you try to imagine it in practice it actually ends up much more compellingly fulfilling some of the tropes that the comics have seemingly always been trying to push with Jean/Logan. Which is just. Hilarious. Like the supposed (very old, tired, romance novel ass) dynamic they’ve often tried to push w Jean/Logan (esp in the new xmen era) is that of Logan representing some sort of… wildness or freedom to Jean’s restraint. That her “giving in” (yuck) to him is also her embracing… idk? Some sort of more natural, unrestrained version of herself and her power.

But it falls really flat with Jean not just bc of the misogyny inherent in the trope but also bc. She’s literally already done that. Like several times in fact. It’s sort of her whole thing. She doesn’t need to fuck Logan to step into her unrestrained power. She already, as a character, is supposed to be a vibrant, impossible, wild manifestation of pure creative/destructive will. (And really it’s kind of everyone else— and the writers’ latent misogyny— that keep fucking that up for her).

Scott on the other hand. Well. He kind of is the high powered female romantic lead obsessed with her job who gets sent on a work trip to a rural town where she’s forced to loosen up a little. Like for better or worse that’s kind of exactly him. He would fit alarmingly well in that sort of push and pull storyline. Which is so… good to me. That Scott, of all people, makes more sense on the cover of a Johanna Lindsey novel than Jean does. That him having that kind of dynamic with Logan actually feels way more interesting bc Scott is restrained to a fault, he is an insufferable, neurotic little headcase who would rather die than tell a waiter they got his order wrong. And yet he’s also the guy who’s admitted to actively enjoying riling Logan up bc part of him just wants to see what will happen. Which I’m pretty sure is called chemistry

Danny gets sent back in time often to fix disasters. This causes problems.

Danny is a member of the teen titans in this. Amity has been handled portal shut down by the league. The minute the anti ecto acts were suggested they acted and nipped it in the bud. As Danny is a teen in this that’s we’re he goes.

Now Danny never really stated his status as a halfa. Just indirectly said his parents caused him to have the second form.

One day there is a huge threat. Now there are rumors the ghost king is kind and protective of earth. In the past there are records of him helping. At the same time warnings he will bring destruction. Two very distinct personalities.

Danny tries to stop them but it’s too late. As he is the one who sealed pariah not the ancients. The summoning worked as it had no magic backing it.

Cue pariah instantly attacking Danny raving about how he took away his victory. Now they have two threats at once. Danny takes down pariah and becomes king.

Now the split personalities makes sense especially when Danny actually discloses some information. Like the fact he had time traveled and clockwork likes to make him fix things.

I certainly think a post-canon fic could like earn this for me but in general I am not super interested in the version of Falin/Marcille that ends up w them immediately settled down in wedded monogamous bliss. I think first of all they have some messy stuff to work out and secondly I think that Falin would love being poly. I also NEED her to be having incredible gay sex on the road during her travels. I want her to be a bit of a rake. She’s breaking hearts but in a very kind way it’s bittersweet they always knew she was going to leave and they cherish their time with her and she loves them fully while they are together. All Homophobic Navani jokes aside I do think she is really working on becoming more accepting of this kind of stuff and like it would be easy to say it’s because of the crab yuri or whatever but honestly I think she started rethinking things when, like, her husband asked her to teach him how to read and she had to get really cool about a lot of things really quickly

Maturing is realizing how many levels of fucked up IvanTill is and still writing fanfic in which they relearn who they are and through their self-discovery find each other halfway.

Today I’m thinking about my aunt. For much of her life, she lived a very “small” existence. She worked the same job for 40 years, at a dry cleaners near her home. She didn’t like to travel much. She had to have things done just so, from folding towels to putting away groceries. It was hard for her to let anyone else do things because they didn’t do it right. Her family shook their heads about her. Her sisters fought with her about her “sad life” many times through the years.

When she died, so many people came out and said how much she meant to them. How kind she’d been to them. How she gave the best relationship advice, even though she’d been single most of her life. She was a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on for so many in her community. She would be dearly missed.

All my life I’ve been told that if I didn’t watch it I’d “end up like aunt Nita” and you know what? I hope I do. No, she wasn’t perfect. There are things that I hope to be different in, but who gets to decide what makes a life meaningful? She was happy. She made a lot of other people happy. And whenever I reach out to those around me in the small ways that are available to me, I feel her spirit moving along with me <3
