If you don't mind asks regarding your thoughts on the latest chapter of DoD, why do you think Suleiman is accepting Ibrahim's answer that he supports Mustafa as the eldest prince despite clearly not believing that's all there is to it, and warns him not to err in his judgment of the matter of Mustafa and Mehmed? Do you think it's possible that he knows about Ibrahim and Hurrem's night together and is testing Ibrahim to see if he'll answer truthfully, or something like that?

No, I don't mind at all! I think as things stand at the end of our latest release, Suleiman suspects that something is going on between Hürrem and İbrahim, and that something is more than simply politics. Because obviously, one would expect İbrahim to back Mehmed.

But I also feel that Suleiman legit doesn't care if his former boyfriend loyal retainer fucked his waifu or not, and he's genuinely enjoying this "game of thrones." In one of the chapters, he said that he was fine with any of his sons succeeding him provided that he manages to overcome his brothers. That really was how the Ottoman succession worked: there was no heir apparent, and the princes almost always went to war or proceeded to kill each other when their father died. Suleiman's ascension to the throne was an odd case as he didn't have any brothers when his father died, so I feel like manga Suleiman wants to see how the brotherly competition would go, and he finds it amusing.

So, becoming the sultan was a matter of capacity: the prince who could come to the capital first to claim the throne without being toppled by other princes on the road "deserved" the throne. Suleiman wants to keep that tradition, and warns İbrahim not to do petty things like trying to support Mustafa without actually believing him to be the most fit to rule. Anyone can tell that İbrahim is not a huge Mustafa fan. He comes off as anti-Mehmed more than anything.

Like you said, Suleiman is kind of pushing İbrahim to come clean about his motives so that they move on with the tedious state affairs. He wants İbrahim to know he's not buying his fake Mustafa fanboy-ism. He's not a jealous man, but he wants honesty. I don't want to give spoilers, but I just want to say that you'll LOVE chapter 74. ;)

Sorry, I'm just rambling and being incoherent because it's too damn hot here...

tl;dr: Suleiman want İbrahim to know that he knows, and to stop trying to take him for a fool.

i hope you don't mind me commenting on these! but yeah, i completely agree. i feel like dod pushes this message about just how high the stakes are for all the women in the harem precisely bc the men are so uninterested in it. ibrahim, despite having once loved hürrem, never seems to truly grasp what kind of life he sentenced her to by bringing her to the harem to keep the power balance from tipping too heavily in mahidevran's favor. he's essentially doomed her to constant uncertainty and competition, and yet he hardly even realizes it. the most acknowledgement he shows to what a grim place the harem is, is when he gave hürrem that golden birdcage, of course symbolizing the harem itself, as a message of just what kind of environment she's in now. even when she nearly gets killed (the part where mahidevran attempts to have her drowned) and then he saves her, there's still no kind of reflection whatsoever from his part, at least that i can remember. it's as if, to him, it's just a normal part of the life of a woman in the harem, which i suppose it is.

and then there's suleiman, who is, like, never serious, and shows very little true concern towards any concubine. despite his casual claims about "loving all the women in the harem," hürrem herself notes that this is a lie, and that to suleiman, the harem is "as small as the tip of his finger"; he has no interest in someone who can't survive by herself in a place that is, to him, so tiny and insignificant. and his behavior itself backs this up: whenever we see him discuss the harem and any possible discord or conflict in it, he always dismisses the matter shortly after, essentially saying that he doesn't really care and he'll leave it up to the individuals of the harem to fight it out. heck, even when he's probably well aware that mahidevran had that one concubine early on in the series who was pregnant with his child killed, he's unbothered. again, to him, the dangers of the harem and the plight that the women in it go through every day are matters of little concern to him. he has the wider world to worry about, lands to conquer, and an empire to rule, so why would he pay much attention to such an ultimately inconsequential place? i do think his attitude is a little bit different towards hürrem, but imo that comes from the fact that he likes that she's able to fend for herself and rise to the top in the harem. if she were to truly be defeated and lose everything, i get the feeling that he would be disappointed in her. maybe he wouldn't abandon her, but idk. the man is a troll of the nth degree

so yeah. i think dod has one of the more candid portrayals of harem life among the adaptations i've seen (which are not, mind you, a lot). the things the women have to do to keep themselves safe, coupled with the casual disinterest that the men regard their constant struggles with, really hammers in the point that the harem truly is an oppressive place. ironically, and maybe tragically, the person who most sympathizes with and understands mahidevran looks to be hürrem herself, her nemesis but probably also the only person who intimately gets her plight. although, as i said, their relationship doesn't get as much exploration as it could, i really like hürrem's perspective on mahidevran: "they say lady gülbahar is the most frightening person in this harem... but i disagree. she is trying to survive in her own way. i, too, will try to survive my own way."

i've watched three different adaptations of hurrem's story, two turkish ones and one ukrainian. one thing i've noticed is that mahidevran is ALWAYS portrayed as the jealous ex, the previous love of suleyman's life that got her relationship homewreckred by hurrem.

quite frankly i find it very weird and a prime example of modern writers not grasping the norms of the time, and prioritizing drama over an exploration of how characters would realistically behave in those circumstances.
