My rule of thumb for myself when interacting with anything online, whether streamers or creators, is something that my mother drilled into my head: If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

It is so easy to uplift other people, make them smile. It is equally easy to be horrible. But I would rather spend the energy I have making the people on the other side of the screen smile. It costs me nothing to hold my tongue and leave the criticism unvoiced.

"Waa why aren't fandoms fun anymore" because you keep policing people's headcanons, make fun of cosplayers,make fun of selfshipers, make fun of beginner artists and just make fun of people for having fun 😐

Well, this is a special day.

Today, 21 MAR 2025, marks ten straight years of "You've Got Kudos!" in my email

Every! Single! Day!

I cannot tell you how grateful for this I am, and how humbled I feel by the kindness of the Lovely Readers, and how it still makes me smile every time I see those three words in my email notifications. I do not take it for granted; it honestly blows my mind that this streak has continued.*

I was telling my husband about this particular anniversary, and I choked halfway through, on happy tears.

It's stunning to me, when I consider what this milestone really signifies: Every single damn day--for ten! years!--some soul, somewhere in the world, engaged with my work. I imagine very few, extremely prolific and widely translated (not to mention marketed by publishing conglomerates) authors in the world might have a similar statistic.

Joke's on them though. Thanks to those daily emails from the sainted AO3, I have the receipts. :-D

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love you, and appreciate this more than I can say.

(*to be totally transparent, it's every day for ten years, save one day back in 2014 ::shakes fist at the sky:: It keeps me humble).

My current goal is to read every single (tagged) WrightWorth fanfiction on Archive of Our Own in backwards chronological order (barring things that I can tell by the tags I'm personally not interested in at all, but that's a pretty limited list so far).

Fandom has an unhealthy obsession with length.

Seriously, I'm gonna need fandom to start being as passionate and appreciative of shortform fic and non-essay comments as you are of novel fics and essay comments.

Rave about one-shots that are 10k or less, go fuckin' wild talking about the mastery it takes to write a true drabble (exactly 100 words) well, fawn over the skill needed to tell a complete story in few words.

Talk about how a "love it!" comment is the highlight of your day instead of just praising long comments that go into detail on things.

If you can't do any of that, learn to. It's a skill issue and you need to drastically improve yours. Learn to appreciate the shortform and to express that appreciation just as enthusiastically as you appreciate the longform.

the experience of writing fic for svsss has been absolutely insane so far. I posted a fic less than 24 hours ago and it already has twenty comments. I have been in so many fandoms where you have to BEG to get comments, where you'd be lucky to get more than ten comments and the ratio between hits and kudos/comments/bookmarks was vast, but so far the scum villain fandom has been super responsive! The hits/kudos/comments/bookmarks ratios have been super tight, even on my fics which have all been oneshots under 10k!

And it's not just me! I regularly see fanart for svsss fics, which was a rare sight in a lot of other fandoms I've been in. People reblog minifics that get posts to tumblr and leave tags and replies on them. I've written for a lot of fandoms in my time, and this a shocking amount of fic engagement compared to many other fandoms I've been in!!

I can't help but wonder if it's because of the nature of scum villain itself? Other people have talked about how the story uniquely appeals to writers, and it ultimately is about the relationship between a writer and reader, especially in a fan space. I can't help but wonder if the combination of this being a fandom with a high density of writers and it being a story about engaging with writing encourages a fandom culture that is super engaged with fanfiction!
