#do I leave kudos but no comments?

My rule of thumb for myself when interacting with anything online, whether streamers or creators, is something that my mother drilled into my head: If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
It is so easy to uplift other people, make them smile. It is equally easy to be horrible. But I would rather spend the energy I have making the people on the other side of the screen smile. It costs me nothing to hold my tongue and leave the criticism unvoiced.
"Waa why aren't fandoms fun anymore" because you keep policing people's headcanons, make fun of cosplayers, make fun of selfshipers, make fun of beginner artists and just make fun of people for having fun 😐
#do I leave kudos but no comments?#sometimes#but I’m getting better#I love making people smile#so why say anything when it doesn’t benefit anyone#and it just makes you *that person*

people are really looking at stats to determine if a fic is worth reading? no wonder fics that never got popular at the first drop never had a chance 💀
#also people don't really leave kudos anymore#or comments#so stats are fallible!!#don't do this i beg of you#best fic i ever read: barely 100 kudos#worst fic i ever read: most popular in a fandom based on stats#i'm just saying!!!

My current goal is to read every single (tagged) WrightWorth fanfiction on Archive of Our Own in backwards chronological order (barring things that I can tell by the tags I'm personally not interested in at all, but that's a pretty limited list so far).
I am pleased to say that out of 416 pages, I have finally got to page 400!
#keep in mind I am reading them BACKWARDS which means I have only read 16 pages#but it's a milestone#i'm the one leaving kudos and comments on something you wrote a decade ago#but i'm doing it on my phone and i'm not logged in#wrightworth#narumitsu#fanfiction#also i went and picked up my copy of investigations today!#but i can't decide if i should start it or finish spirit of justice so i haven't played either of them

Unrelated to anything: being blocked on AO3 hurts way more than being blocked on Tumblr
#personal#vent post#like i can't even leave you a kudos for the adorable fic? we've never spoken. what did I even do to piss you off so much?#I've blocked like maybe two people and it was generally a result of really bad comment threads

Honestly, getting real tired carrying and supporting other folks around here when most of them aren't returning the favor...
#i'm two seconds away from nuking everything in my queue and drafts out of spite#but i don't feel good about that bc there's innocent collateral#this is tumblr‚ the place you're supposed to fucking share the stuff that your friend's and other people are making#and i get it‚ it's not possible to like and reblog everything here‚ i understand that and i'm not expecting that#it just sucks constantly feeling like no one gives a shit about the stuff you're proud of and put effort into‚ y'know?#there's an entire subsection of this fandom that basically ignores any vper that isn't running modded on pc#which is like half the fucking fandom and i definitely pissed some of those people off just for choosing who i associate with#i've been writing in this fandom for three years now and i still don't feel like i have any fucking writing friends#or a good place to get technical support#the writing associates i do have either don't read anything i write or when they do won't comment for some inexplicable reason#(if you're an author on ao3 you know‚ first hand‚ damn well how much comments mean to authors‚ so what's the deal?)#(if you actually don't like it‚ it's fine‚ don't even touch the kudos button‚ no one has to know you were there)#i'm traumatized from my previous discord experiences and am very reluctant to let people into my circle without vetting them first#even tumblr communities is a struggle for me because it still feels a like a popularity/social influence contest#and i know i'm fucking slow#sue me for having a life outside of the internet and wanting to be mindful and thoughtfully engaged with other people's artwork#i talk to people in the tags#i've been leaving comments on every fic i read now#i'm not expecting people to bend over backwards for me#but fostering community and friendships requires mutual exchange#and it's shitty feeling like you're generosity is constantly being fucking wasted#i'm trying to keep it fun around here but a lot aren't helping with that and this isn't a job for one person#sorry not sorry for the rant but i've been feeling very salty about this as of late#i know the holidays can be stressful and the fandom in general has been slowly shrinking which has probably exacerbated these issues#a lot of folks have moved on#but these issues have always been here and they aren't magically going to go away unless people work on them#i'm not expecting anything i make to break the bank at this point but when your friends won't even put your crappy art on the fridge anymor#like why are we here?#i also don't understand the people who are following me but never interact with anything i make???#rambling into the void

the experience of writing fic for svsss has been absolutely insane so far. I posted a fic less than 24 hours ago and it already has twenty comments. I have been in so many fandoms where you have to BEG to get comments, where you'd be lucky to get more than ten comments and the ratio between hits and kudos/comments/bookmarks was vast, but so far the scum villain fandom has been super responsive! The hits/kudos/comments/bookmarks ratios have been super tight, even on my fics which have all been oneshots under 10k!
And it's not just me! I regularly see fanart for svsss fics, which was a rare sight in a lot of other fandoms I've been in. People reblog minifics that get posts to tumblr and leave tags and replies on them. I've written for a lot of fandoms in my time, and this a shocking amount of fic engagement compared to many other fandoms I've been in!!
I can't help but wonder if it's because of the nature of scum villain itself? Other people have talked about how the story uniquely appeals to writers, and it ultimately is about the relationship between a writer and reader, especially in a fan space. I can't help but wonder if the combination of this being a fandom with a high density of writers and it being a story about engaging with writing encourages a fandom culture that is super engaged with fanfiction!
#today is the day for long svsss posts i guess#but yeah the svsss fandom has been uniquely wonderful when it comes to fic engagement#like. just comparing it to the mdzs fics i was writing#i put a lot of work into them but the most comments i got was 9#but the comments come pouring in for my svsss stuff#even though theyre not fics i put a whole lot of work into! theyre relatively short and sweet#but instead of a bunch of empty hits#people actually leave comments and kudos and bookmarks#it's really encouraging#writing fic for svsss is a really freeing experience for a lot of reasons tbh#the source material itself offers a lot of flexibility#you can write ridiculous crack or absolutely gut wrenching angst#you can write graphic violence or graphic smut#all of it is supported by the source material itself bc the tone is so varied#and you can put as much or as little thought into the world and setting as you like#you can get deep into the xianxia conventions and the setting of ancient china#or you can toss anachronistic items into the setting for convenience#because that's how airplane would write it#do you need some kind of convenient plot device? come up with whatever you want and blame it on airplane#do you need a monster or a magical item? just throw some words together. again it's what airplane would do#it's extremely freeing

Begging people who read fanfics to leave comments. Especially in the small communities like ours. Fanfics don't have the same support that art does, where it can be reblogged and commented and shared. The only validation we get is from comments, more so than kudos honestly. Because then we feel the engagement, and it feels worth it.
Lots of love and effort goes into writing. So even just a "Loved it!" Or "Can't wait for the next chapter!" changes everything for us. And sure, you can tell the artist directly, we love it when you do. But comments on our works are like scrapbooks. I go back to comments I love to read them over again to get that warm and fuzzy feeling. A hit of dopamine to keep me writing.
Do writers a solid. Tell them you liked it. And thank you to everyone who does. Yes, write for yourselves, but no one is immune to validation, and so we do it for you! Especially in communities like this, where there aren't many stories to go around to keep the fixation fed.
#just shouting into the void#because it can be discouraging#not just for me but for everyone I see out there#and i'm no saint i know i leave kudos and then go “i'll come back to comment”#i want to do better#this isnt an attack either I'm just like#please like me please like this thing#anyway#shelli speaks#support writers#as far as i've seen its a lot harder for them

i wish i had less respect for myself and less shame for being perceived bc then you guys would see me write the most ridiculous shit ever full of errors and publish it and still expect praise
#not to start discourse or whatever but i think there are too many ppl out there that are like that#like hm. perhaps u r not getting the attention u want bc its not that worthy of positive attention#im not trying to be meannn but its irritating to see those long posts that are like 'even if u didnt love the fic u still have to leave#kudos or a comment' and like the thing is- you dont! u r not obligated to do anything at all even if u loved it

listen. i'm always happy whenever someone leaves a comment because they enjoy my writing. whether it's a quick "love it!" or a longer dissection of whatever they've read, it warms my heart that they took the time out of their day, however brief, to let me know that they liked my work. i don't consider myself entitled to receive comments for posting my work, which makes every single one i get a gift!
but comments like these (particularly ones that come from profiles that haven't posted fic and are aggregates of bookmarks*) really do leave a bad taste in my mouth:
so, let me spell some things out for anyone who may be unaware:
I don't write for you.
I write for myself.
I am writing fic for free in the little spare time i have.
You are not entitled to my (or anyone else's) work
i haven't posted fic to ao3 since literally january of this year. i also wish i were posting fic more frequently, trust me. the only thing worse than writing is not writing. but asking "where's the rest????" and "part 2????" only activates my spite response to not post. you'll get updates to fics when you get updates. writing fanfiction is a hobby for me. i do it for fun. but i also take my craft (writing) very seriously. i want to write a good, compelling story and i take great care in the writing process. it's laborious to begin with, and on top of that, i am a meticulous planner. it takes me much longer to write a fic than it does for you to read it -- yes, even for the short ones and smutfics!
it's the famous "pick two: high quality, cheap, and fast", and unfortunately for all of us, if you want my "not bad"-writing and have it also remain free, then you're gonna have to be patient.
*i'm not saying that this is an incorrect way to use ao3. if you're using ao3 as a place to keep track of the fics you like, that's a valid way to use the site, and not what i'm mad about. it's the entitlement.
#listen. these comments really do roll off me like water off a duck#because i'm comfortable with my 'i write for myself' and 'no one is entitled to my work' ideology#but this is also 100% a piece of modern fandom culture where i am putting my foot down#which is to say: people can send me these comments all they want. but they will not guilt trip me into working faster#you'll get your update when you get your update. no sooner and no later.#whining wombat#anyway. i woke up in a fighting mood today apparently and the email i got from ao3 did not help#bitches didn't even leave kudos or anything so i'm really not feeling compelled to indulge in their requests ya know?#i update when i update. and if i don't. well then you're just gonna have to learn how to live with disappointment.#sorry to have to be the one to teach you that lesson

K so, Semblances are connected to Aura which is a manifestation of the soul yeah?
In Before the Dawn, the father of the villains confirms that one of twin's semblance was active in the womb throughout a good portion of the pregnancy
Meaning, in Remnant, fetuses have souls. Wonder how legal abortions are
Edit: just remembered Pyrrha had to unlock Jaune's Aura in V1, so does that mean someone cracked open a fetus's Aura inside the womb? Was Gillian strong enough as a cluster of cells to unlock it herself?? Wtf is this origin story???
#rwde#I don't think myers wrote this w the angle of prolife propaganda but hoo boy did he not think this plot through#(tho idk his politics so he could have subconsciously done it. this is the doctor who moon abortion episode all over again)#btd sucked so bad but what keeps snagging in my brain is that the whole thing that kicked off the twins monarchy scheme -#- the crown birthmark born to one every generation - was apparently burned into gillian???#and its NEVER FOLLOWED UP ON#like kudos to FUCKING COCO OF ALL PEOPLE for commenting on her enemy being BRANDED but why is it just the one comment???#idk who I'd go for first: the father or the brother. who's ego is inflated enough to justify burning their own kin?#and why even do it? i dont think myers would write jax and gill to follow the royal tradition of bloodline purity-#-so they couldnt rule together right? why even bother marking her if the crown would always go to jax?#and why cant a single rwby villain have a scheme that makes sense to some degree?#jax wanting remnant to get a little bit genghis khan is so fucking stupid and baseless. where is the logic behind it?#the best villains either do heinous shit for shits and giggles or they genuinely do have a point but came to the wrong conclusion#thats why tyrian and watts are the only decent villains post v3. theyre both in it for themselves and unapologetic abt it#jax and gill are just annoying. go join a fight club and leave vacuo alone kthxbai#anyway thanks for attending another episode of rwby has shit world building and even worse implications#yodeling into the void

While I do think there is a small problem with people not engaging with or sharing creative work/fan work on here (or other sites that don't run on algorithm like AO3), I don't think the answer is to be ridiculous about it either.
A much better way to address it is leading by example: reblog/share and add positive comments yourself! People will catch on that it's cool, that it's okay and they have nothing to be anxious about, and start doing it too.
Wagging fingers or complaining tends to do very little. Thankfully, people emulating those they admire is a powerful thing. You can simply model behavior you want to see and some people may start catching on.
But it won't get any better if you don't do your part too. So don't worry so much about others. Focus on what you're doing and how you engage with creative works and fandom. Be a positive force yourself and the rest will follow.
#this is coming from me who has been on Tumblr since 2012#i see a fair amount of people complaining about this issue#and unfortunately many of the folk doing so are often the sort who will do the same and *also* only Like not Reblog art#or only leave Kudos but not Comment on sites like AO3 that are also not algorithm-based#or at least do those things far less than they should for how active they are in fandom#like yes it does affect us all negatively but#you want to see change in how others engage with creative work?#then you first.#it starts with you.#sky sez
