Stephen Strange was a doctor, a damn good doctor, and he would remind everyone that while he was not practicing he was still a doctor. One thing he could never seem to remember, however, was his lack of bedside manor. After Thanos had been defeated, Tony had barely been seen. Any time the magician had gone to visit Tony, FRIDAY had merely dismissed him with a ‘Tony is not in the building’ and ‘I am not permitted to tell you Tony’s location’. This made Stephen upset, but he merely left each time.

After one month of no contact, Stephen stopped leaving voice mails.

After two months of no contact, Stephen stopped calling.

After three months of no contact, Stephen’s texts became shortened.

After four months?

Well, Stephen stopped texting.

After six months?

Stephen stopped portaling to Tony’s house all together.

In a year? Well, when Stephen talked to Tony again, it wasn’t under ideal circumstances. 

Another invasion. Stephen would say that he and the hero’s helping him had it under control. Apparently Tony Stark didn’t think that that was the case. 

The Ironman armor came flying in, in all its red and gold glory. Shooting and flying with precision. The battle finished quickly, and Ironman hadn’t said a word since he arrived. Stephen called out to Tony, but was met with only silence. At the end of the battle the suit nodded once in Stephen’s general direction before shooting towards the sky and away from the remnants of the battle.

Mumbling under his breath, Stephen and his cloak went on an immediate chase. Every time the armor sped up, Stephen portaled closer. He yelled at Tony to stop and talk to him and was only met with silence and an increase of repulser speed. This continued for a while, Stephen guessed a minimum of 30 minutes, before the suit slowed down at the Stark residence.

As the suit came to a landing, Strange followed suit allowing the cloak to float off of his shoulders. 

“Leave.” Said the suit, though it wasn’t Tony's voice.

“God Damn it Tony, you’ve refused to talk to me for months! I spent so long trying to find you and you’ve straight up ignored me!” Strange reached forward and grabbed the shoulder of the suit. “For Fucks sake, you’ve barely talked to me in technically over 5 years! You’ve made every effort to not talk to me since Thanos and I don’t know why! So just fucking tell me and I can leave you alone!” 

Slowly the suit turned to him and spoke, this time in Tony’s now raspy voice “Because no one wants to talk to a machine, Strange.” Both men were silent for a moment at what Tony said.

“Tony, you aren't a machine. A man in a glorified suit of armor? Sure. A machine? No.” Strange’s face was full of confusion as he spoke. As he finished, The suit began to peel back, nanotech leaving its station and revealing Tony.  

Stephen tried to hide his shock at the changes in the man in front of him. His right arm was entirely gone, replaced by machinery. Half of his face was deeply scarred. Tony’s eyes were sad, and looked filled with grief. “Morgan is scared of me. She refuses to be in the same room as me unless I have my face coated in makeup or am in my armor.”

Tony paused for a moment, taking a deep breath “Pepper is filing for divorce since Morgan won’t go near me. She says that it’s easier this way and I can’t keep fighting her. No one wants a machine. ‘Tony Stark has no heart’ as the saying went.” He dramatically flared his right hand for his final sentence, his mechanical hand remaining unmoving at his side.

Taking a moment to take in what was said, Stephen stepped forward and took Tony’s mechanical hand. With one hand he held it by the palm, and the other he trailed along the intricate metal. It moved almost exactly like flesh and blood, a marvel in prosthetic technology. “I think it's beautiful.” He whispered. “Both the mechanics and you.”

Tony didn’t say anything, only watching Stephen’s hands trail along the metal arm. “I’m sorry that Pepper refuses to see that, and that Morgan is too young to understand that appearances mean nothing.” Tony still kept his eyes on Strange’s hands, watching their slow, shaking movements. 

Avoiding himself for a moment, Tony noticed the yellow gloves the Doctor wore. “Strange, why do you wear those gloves?”

“Same reason you’re hiding from the world. My hand’s aren’t ‘pretty’ like the world expects of a doctor.” Carefully, he let go of Tony’s mechanical hand, and carefully pulled the gloves off of his hands. Something he hadn’t done in front of another in a while. 

This time, Tony reached out and took hold of Stephen’s hands. Stephen flinched at the contact, and closed his eyes at the strange and slightly painful feeling of his hands being touched. Tony used his flesh hand to run his fingers along the scarring that lined the doctor's skin, a discolored pink. “How?” was all Tony said almost mesmerized by the lines.

“I was an arrogant asshole who got in a car wreck and lost the one thing that let me be so cruel. My hands. I underwent 8 different treatments, spending all of my money and pushing away the one person who still cared about me. After that I found the ancient one and learned the mystic arts…” he paused for a moment “blah blah blah, all that boring reform-ity bullshit people love to gloat about.” 

Tony began to laugh a little bit, leaving Stephen to smile quietly. “All of our scars are different Tony. I know they’re painful, emotionally and perhaps even physically. You need to remember though, your scars are proof that you survived.”  He let his laughter die down and smiled.

“Now!” started Stephen “Lets get you inside, and I’ll let you in on a little secret!” Tony perked up at that.

“The magic man has a secret? I wonder what it could be!” He teased, letting Stephen take his hand again and begin leading him into the house.

“Well, I make a mean batch of cookies. My sister loved them! She would bug me almost every day asking for a new batch of cookies!” The two of them laughed at the story as they walked inside, and soon after cookies could be smelt baking in the oven.

i understand that writing a disabled character as a non-disabled person can be challenging, bc you don't have the same experience but it's really all in the movies and like...google.

Don't forget about disabilities!

Some people on Tumblr pointed out that not all fic writers remember about Doctor Strange's disability (injured hands). But for some reason I've never seen a rant about fic writers who forget about all of Tony's disabilities.

Everyone's like, "Stephen's hands are shaking, he's in chronic pain. It's the defining thing in his character arc!". Or about Bucky and his arm: "It's heavy and it hurts. It needs constant maintenance". But no "Tony is in pain when he BREATHES. He can DIE at any moment due to arrhythmia. If a villain simply uses an EMP, Tony will fall out of the sky and CRUSH to his death or break his spine". Or "He can get PNEUMONIA from a common cold and spend every flu season in the intensive care unit."

imagine that, in the first avenger, before pre-serum steve's training montage, we get a flashback with sarah rogers to explain his perseverance. imagine that when he goes to save bucky and after losing him, we get flashbacks to them as kids.

imagine that, in civil war, instead of (or along with if that's what it takes) more of tony's daddy issues we also get to see little steve with sarah to also understand him better.

I'm never gonna be one of those people who tell others to stop writing disabled villains or that writing a character that deals with internalized ableism (disabled people like any group of people can be total prices of shit, and I'm sorry not everyone is content and accepting of their disabilities and some of us take comfort in characters that struggle with being angry because of their problems) but Jesus Christ when a heroic character with ugly symptoms who makes cruel decisions or has 'bratty' or 'immature' moments can we let them stay heroes? Can we let them have a disorder without piling on the shame that we are inferior because we can't do something everyone else can- because that's literally what a disability is! Can they still be heroes?

Do we have to use intellectual/developmental disability as a shorthand for anti intellectualism and being a gross annoying psycho

Do we have to make every heroic character with aspd or npd into a villain or change their disability to autism because it's 'more sympathetic' as if lack of empathy isn't a goddamned symptom of many disabilities like PTSD and autism- You can headcanon tony as having autism- that's cool by me but it's clear some of y'all do it to make him a 'woobie'- which is infantalizing btw but also it's because some of y'all are ableist toward people with npd

I hate that the only acceptable 'ugly symptoms' are things like forgetting to shower or brush your teeth every once in a while or being a bit irritable and not stuff like burning bridges or having explosive outburts

Im not saying that we should just accept and allow mentally ill/intellectually disabled people/characters to get away with bad behaviors unpunished but can they stay heroes? Can they still be respectable?

Yes you are technically superior to disabled people because you are capable of things we aren't and you have better character and you can control yourself but guess what? Those people you hate for being incapable of that shit have disabilities it's not our faults! It's the fucking definition of a disability! Like yeah it is a skill issue and we're just 'worse' than nondisabled with us lacking self control and having lower IQs and bad mental processing- yeah it is because we're lacking in some capacity that's like the definition disability you can't say you support disabled people and then turn around and say shit about how your better than these people because you can talk or take care of yourself

Hank Pym and Lapis Lazuli should get called out for acting like assholes and pieces of shit but I am firmly against turning one of few heroic characters who actively struggle with psychosis and delusions into another 'psycho' villain and I'm firmly against saying Lapis is just as bad as Jasper and using symptoms of her PTSD as signs she should be rewritten into a villain- I want them to be held accountable not turned into straight up evil guys or dear god washing out their problematic qualities until they're palatable/relatable to a neurotypical audience to make them good guys when they are already good guys!

Can people who do bad things because of their disabilities still be heroes? Can they be allowed to get better or do they have to accept that having ugly symptoms means being the bad guy? Fucking hell this is why I side eye anyone who acts like mental illness/developmental/cognitive or mental etc disabilities are more destigmatized than physical disabilities (trust me they aren't)

Tldr let characters with ugly symptoms be heroes let your characters with mental disorders act like they have a disorder and let said characters be heroes inspite of it!

Something something Steve Roger's was disabled and became able-bodied, Tony Stark was able-bodied and became disabled, the processes that led to those changes were intimately connected to their becoming heroes and just as connected to their respective treatments by fandom

maybe i’m just in a weird mood but i can’t stop thinking about how disabled people are a lot like superheroes. not in the way you’re probably thinking of, though. let me explain.

i fucking love spider-man, and iron man, and i’m an absolute nerd when it comes to shit like odd biology or psychology with characters like them. i’ve seen my fair share of movies and read enough books, wikis, and fics to feel close to the characters, and i can say for certain if we’re looking at a lot of them scientifically, it’s not far off to say that most superheroes can be categorized by either having an impairing mental illness or disability that heavily effects their day to day lives.

i’ll be using several Marvel characters as examples, since i’m most comfortable/knowledgeable about them.

we can start with the most obvious people, such as Colonel Rhodes, Clint Barton, Sargent Barnes, and Stephen Strange, who are paralyzed, hard of hearing, an amputee, and have nerve damage/severe hand tremors respectively. our next biggest candidates are Peter Parker, Tony Stark, Steven Rogers, Natalia Romanoff, and Bruce Banner/Hulk. in the odd category we have Thor, Wanda & Pietro Maximoff, Loki, and Vision.

Rhodes, Barton, Barnes, and Strange don’t need much of an explanation. they each either were caught in an accident, on the job, captured/experimented on, or a mixture of one or more. they got help of varying degrees for themselves to heal and recover to continue living.

Rhodes won’t ever not be paralyzed from the waist down. Barton will never get his hearing back. Barnes can’t regrow his arm. Strange may be able to use magic to help his tremors, but he chose not to. he will never be able to take back the events leading to his accident.

Stark, Bruce, and Rogers need a bit more of an explanation, but not by much of a wide margin. Stark has heart issues thanks to the shrapnel and the Arc Reactors. Bruce will never be able to go back to before the accident that turned him into the Hulk. He can be one or the other, but his brain and body are no longer his own. Rogers went from being in a constant state of sickness and disability to being “cured” and ultimately turned into something inhuman and weird beyond humanity’s own natural abilities.

piggybacking off that, Natalia was trained in brutal conditions to do inhuman stunts. she’s permanently traumatized and most likely won’t ever recover to being “normal” or “average” in the eyes of society.

disregarding the blatant oddness of Thor, Loki, Vision (a literal humanoid AI), and the slightly unexplainable whatever that went down with the Maximoffs (and because they are also semi-self explanatory in their own way, being enhanced) we’re going to move on to Peter Parker.

Peter is a bit of a wild card in this to me, both because he has three movie incarnations across three franchises respectively, but also because unlike the other superheroes, he’s not an old adult just yet. he’s what i see as the real kicker here.

trauma out the ass after losing his parents, his uncle, his aunt (NWH), and being erased from the universe (NWH), he is severely at risk for or has had some version of depression, anxiety, and suicide. top that all off with getting hollywood-hand wavey spider radiation poisoning and changing on a base level (his dna), he’s about as fucked as Rogers, Barnes, and Stark, or more so.

this is already long as shit and you’re probably wondering “i know all this, its not news. what does this have to do with your average disabled person?”. let me tell you.

none of these characters will ever/have ever been your version of socially acceptable or normal in almost any modern age. i’m willing to bet that even with my limited knowledge on psychological and physical disabilities, if any of you fucknut bitchfishs saw these characters outside the movies in real life as normal, every day civilians, you’d probably either act disgusted over their existence or disregard them entirely as if they never existed in the first place.

it probably took months of stress and depression and hard work with no real end in sight for any of these characters to get better at what the world thinks would be an acceptable level. they may have saved the world or they may have only been a small part of something, but that’s the goddamn point here. it doesn’t matter how it happened or if they were born with it, it just is, and apparently that’s much too hard for people to grasp these days.

Rhodey owns a wheelchair. Barnes goes without his arm some days. Rogers (as far as anyone knows) is basically a human-turned alien; abnormal. Strange can’t properly write his signature like he used to. Barton takes off his hearing aids when he pleases and uses ASL. Peter is a teenager with crippling PTSD and some unfulfilled physical needs, living on the lower end of financial security while still developing and trying to maintain his metabolism.

it’s already past midnight while i’m writing this and all i can think of is the fact we parade around disabled and ill people on the big screens as heroes and role models, yet i’ve never seen our world grow to accommodate people like them. instead we cut off or significantly reduce the positive impacts of the barely even mediocre safety nets the government has in place to assist them.

i’m not saying people with disabilities are superheroes, but i am saying superheroes are people with disabilities and often severe illnesses of many varieties.

you don’t value them as people, only idols. you’re the problem clownpiss. fuck yourself.

Definitely. Although, I can see a few other solutions depending on the couple. Since I'm pretty sure you're referring to this post, I'll list some alternatives that I think Tony and/or Stephen would come up with.

Tony would invent some kind of nanotech that allows Stephen to wear a ring without hurting his hands, possibly something similar to compression gloves (?)

Tony making Stephen a really fancy ring that's meant to go on a necklace and can act like a locket because it's Tony. (He'd make one for himself, probably, because he wants to support Stephen)

Stephen embedding his wedding ring with magic that allows him to wear the ring without his hands hurting, just like the sling ring he uses that the post mentioned

Stephen just powers through the pain until Tony forces him to take it off because it's not helping his hands. Tony knows that Stephen is his and he doesn't have to wear a stupid ring to prove it (Stephen thinks he has to, because he wants to see Tony happy. Tony instead finds a compromise.)

If it was wongstrange, Wong wouldn't even bother with rings. He doesn't see the need for them, as he knows that he and Stephen belong to each other -- they don't need physical evidence of that. If Stephen wanted a ring, Wong would either make one of magic or find an alternative, preferably with meaningful symbolism, like a Celtic love knot on a bracelet or necklace, or the Chinese symbol for love.

Tony was disabled and suffered from chronic pain

Tony may not have looked like a disabled person, but not all disabled people need wheelchairs, canes, or hearing aids. Some simply live in constant pain, cannot breathe properly, cannot sleep due to nightmares, or may die without medication or a medical device. All this applies to him.

Tony has suffered from many conditions, many physical and mental traumas. I will describe the most important here (in chronological order), but some things like broken bones, cuts, bruises, etc. happened to him regularly and their impact on his health is unknown.

Blast injuries

You can find details here.

This type of injury has happened to Tony many times, as explosions are not uncommon for superheroes. In his case (he's not an enhanced Homo sapiens, we remember that, right?) they were more harmful than for many others, like Thor, Hulk or Steve.

We can't say exactly how these injuries affected his health, but they couldn't disappear without a trace. What he could have been left with: damaged hearing, vision, brain damage, respiratory system and blood vessels and heart damage, damage to muscles, liver, spleen and intestines.

Shrapnel

And here comes chronic pain, and our first case of overt disability - shrapnel in Tony's chest and most likely right in the heart. Some shrapnel may have remained in other parts of his body, such as his arms and legs, but this was not mentioned in the movies.

Shrapnel can cause harm in two ways:

mechanical (cuts tissue - leads to scarring, puts pressure on nerves and blood vessels, causing pain and ischemia - reduces blood and oxygen flow to parts of the body);

chemical (metal ions can be released from the fragments and travel through the bloodstream, affecting other parts of the body). Many forms of shrapnel contain uranium, which is highly toxic and can lead to health problems, including kidney damage, liver cancer, and bone cancer. It may also cause high blood pressure, autoimmune disorders, and loss of reproductive function.

Other complications may include infections and chronic inflammation around the fragments.

In Tony's case, he received at least three unpleasant gifts from the shrapnel: chronic pain, heart damage, and the constant possibility of death if the medical device that literally keeps him alive stops working or is taken away from him.

So yes, guys, shrapnel is already enough to consider him disabled. But this is just the beginning of the list.

Arrhythmia

Here is a post entirely dedicated to Tony and his arrhythmia.

To summarize: Tony had a severe arrhythmia (most likely Sick Sinus Syndrome) that required a pacemaker and an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) powered by an arc reactor. Possible causes of this condition include the blast injury, electric damage from water torture with an electromagnet in chest, and heart damage.

This is the second case of disability and constant mortal danger for Tony - just like with the shrapnel, without the pacemaker he would have died, and even sooner than without the electromagnet that stops the shrapnel. And let's not forget the risk of sudden death associated with arrhythmias.

What Tony could experience on a daily basis due to his arrhythmia: exercise intolerance (he stopped running and surfing after Afghanistan), exhaustion, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting (among all the Avengers, Tony lost consciousness most often), lightheadedness or dizziness, heart palpitations. Arrhythmia is a thing that usually gets worse over years.

Reactor

Hard stuff. Here you can see why.

The damage done to Tony's body in order to implant the reactor was enormous. With all things considered, it is not necessarily a deadly trauma, but certainly a debilitating one.

This case is the third obvious disability and the main source of chronic pain that Tony suffered from 2008 to 2014.

What he definitely experienced every minute of those years: pain, exhaustion and depression due to this, discomfort and pressure in the chest, difficulty breathing (for which his suits contained supplemental oxygen), limited upper body mobility and decreased muscle strength, sensitivity to ambient temperature (the metal would conduct the temperature of the environment and could become too hot or too cold. That's why he would prefer to stay in California until his surgery at the end of IM3 and not move to New York yet - because of the cold winters).

Potential complications that required Tony to constantly monitor his health included: collapsed lung, asthma, chest infections, chest trauma, thoracic lymphedema, blood clots.

He would also be prone to respiratory infections, which could easily lead to complications. For example, a common cold would most likely develop into bronchitis and/or pneumonia. That is why it is very dangerous for him to be around sick people.

The device could also pose a real danger if it encounters another strong magnet (no MRI for Tony!).

Tony always had to be on medications to help him breath (oxygen, asthma inhalers when he picks up a virus or his airway gets irritated, nebulizer treatment), antibiotics due to weakened immune system, painkillers as needed, regular beta blockers to reduce risk of arrhythmias and sudden death.

PTSD

In IM3, we were shown Tony suffering from this mental disorder. In CA:CW we also saw him using B.A.R.F. to ease his trauma over the death of his parents. This is one of the factors that makes me think he had complex PTSD since childhood, not just acute PTSD caused by the alien invasion.

The acute PTSD affected his quality of life, depriving him of sleep, causing nightmares, anxiety and panic attacks from 2012 to 2014. Although it couldn't go away just because Tony became a little more confident in himself by the end of the movie. It takes years of treatment to get rid of this condition, and the VA considers it a permanent disability.

Other things that could have long-term effects on his health:

Radiation (cancer, liver failure, infertility, and thickening and scarring of lung, liver, and kidney tissue)

Heavy metal poisoning (palladium is carcinogenic, may damage bone marrow, kidneys and liver)

Repeated concussions (one possible consequence is chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which often begins years or even decades after the last brain injury)

Use of B.A.R.F. (could be the cause of the migraine he experienced at the beginning of CA:CW)

Left arm/shoulder injury

Penetrating trauma (it is unknown whether Carol actually brought Tony the Xorrian elixir to cure him as she promised)

Conclusion: before the attack that changed his life forever, Tony was a healthy, strong man who ran canyons and surfed. Thanks to his health and high exercise tolerance, he was able to survive many serious and even critical injuries. However, he was not an enhanced super soldier, and the injuries that did not kill him left him physically weaker and with disabilities that could not help but affect his well-being. He became immunocompromised, could no longer endure strenuous exercise without his high-tech prosthesis, take a proper deep breath. He also became smaller due to loss of muscle mass (compare IM1 and IM3).

Tony also suffered from chronic pain due to the damage to his chest and the presence of shrapnel.
