Welcome to the LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown!

General Information:

Who can be entered:

Anyone can be entered that is LGBTQ+ and disabled. This includes physically disabled characters, neurodivergent characters and characters with mental health things like anxiety or depression for example. However, this is not limited to solely just canon confirmed characters. In order to be considered for this showdown there are a couple different ways this can happen, preferably though there is at least a solid canon basis. More about that here.

Submissions:

Characters can be submitted in the google form linked. If you are not comfortable using a google form you can also shoot us an ask. You can submit as many characters as you like, but please do not spam the same character. This will not help their chances of getting in, in fact it might disqualify them from the showdown. If you’re not sure a character counts, feel free to shoot us an ask. Submissions will be open until at least August 1, but this is subject to change. Additionally, don’t assume your character has been submitted, they probably haven’t even if they are from a popular media.

The Worst Trope Ever Showdown: Round 1, Side A

Disability Magically Cured

When a character is ‘fixed’, ‘cured’, or ‘healed’ of their Permanent disability, usually by the means of magic within fantasy genres in media.

Propaganda:

Framing the curing of a disability as a narrative reward suggests that having/acquiring a disability is some sort of punishment, and that disabled people 1) SHOULD want to be cured, and 2) are disabled because they somehow deserve it. Same goes for the “disability as punishment” trope; just the other way around. If other people are submitting the disability as punishment trope and nobody else is submitting the cure as reward trope then please count this as a vote for the disability as punishment trope.

Implies that disabled characters are ‘incomplete’ and/or ‘broken’ people because of their disability.

Honor Thy Abuser

Abuse victims are expected by the narrative to forgive and respect their abusers.

Propaganda:

While this could be done well and with moral complexity, most of the time it's just kind of shitty and vilifying towards the understandable resentment one might feel towards someone who abused them.

Welcome to the Disabled Characters Showdown Part 2

General Information:

Who can be entered:

Anyone can be entered that is disabled. This includes physically disabled characters, neurodivergent characters, and characters with mental health things like anxiety or depression. This is pretty much limited to canon confirmed characters (We’ll get more into that in a bit). Everyone that was in the prior round here and pretty much everyone from @gay-disabled-characters-showdown are free game but not guaranteed in unless they are submitted.

The usual suspects (We will make a post that will be updated as we go with other banned media)

Best: stated in canon

Other options: word of god confirmed, or heavily coded, they just aren’t gonna have a specific label due to setting.

What doesn’t count as canon confirmed (especially for things like PTSD): they should have a lot of trauma, but there is literally no acknowledgement of anything that could be construed as such.

If you are not sure a character qualifies please send us an ask.

Some notes on timing:

We have to write image descriptions for all the characters, which means to get the showdown set up it takes us a kind of ridiculously long time. This means when the showdown gets started is likely to change. Additionally, please don’t have any crises until the showdown ends on August 26. Unless you send us a message we won’t be able to respond until then. Any asks that we get by that time will be responded to, and then we will disappear off the face of the earth until like the 1st or 2nd of September.

Submissions:

Disabled Character Showdown

Loving the tournaments like @autismswagsummit, @aroaceswagcompetition, @adhdswagcompetition, @bisexualswagcompetition, haven't yet seen a showdown for disabled characters yet, so let's give that a go!

Rules:

As usual, no real people, etc

Both mental and physical disabilities are allowed, though I'd ask no responses that are just adhd/autism as they've had their own showdowns, we wanna showcase other disabilities here

(Chronic pain also counts)

I'm on the fence about including characters who aren't disabled in canon but are in popular headcanon (eg Essek from Critical Role), so I think for now, you can submit them, but let me know in the form, and we'll make that decision later depending on the responses I get

No "Oh this character isn't REALLY disabled bc they have a perfect disability aid/don't suffer" arguments pls, different representation means different things to different people, a disability is a disability no matter how sci fi your setting

Submit as many characters as you like but only submit each character once! (I'll use number of responses where relevant to help with seeding the bracket)

I can't guarantee I'll include every single character that gets submitted, especially if this goes similar to some other blogs who've gotten like 500 characters all with one vote each? (Alas, I am but a simple human being and have multiple disabilities myself), but I'm willing to do a pretty big bracket/have some qualifying rounds beforehand, so good luck, and I look forward to hearing about a whole bunch of disabled characters I didn't know before!

I have a special place in my heart for Luz and Hunter both finding closure in their experiences with Belos because it all had to happen exactly the way it did, for them to meet and become family.

They’ve both experienced personal manipulation and trauma at the hands of Belos in the way that none of the others can fully relate to. But they find comfort in each other.

I hope we get to see Hunter and Luz stand together against Belos. The two people that he’s hurt personally, who struggle with the guilt of having helped him, giving each other the strength to face him. and then just behind them, all the friends and loved ones they’ve accrued, ready to protect and support them while Belos stands alone.

She’s got underdeveloped wings, meaning she can’t fly, while other fillies her age already can. Instead she uses her scooter to get up to speed to match her racing icon (and eventual adoptive big sister figure) Rainbow Dash, fluttering her wings as she moves and taking daredevil leaps off of different ramps to get the sensation of flying! It’s talked about in the show how she wishes she could fly, but she doesn’t let it keep her down, and finds other ways to get around!

My personal headcanon is that it’s a lack of properly developed flight feathers, since sometimes it seems she can go faster while fluttering on her scooter, or flapping her wings while she jumps can extend her airtime, just not enough to keep her aloft. But that’s not canon, idk if the exact details of her disability are discussed in the show, just that her wings are tiny and she can’t fly. In flash forwards we see her wings still the size of when she was young, while other ponies her age have larger wings closer to the size of a full adult pony’s.

Also she lives with her lesbian aunts which is pretty cool
