Welcome to the LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown!

General Information:

Who can be entered:

Anyone can be entered that is LGBTQ+ and disabled. This includes physically disabled characters, neurodivergent characters and characters with mental health things like anxiety or depression for example. However, this is not limited to solely just canon confirmed characters. In order to be considered for this showdown there are a couple different ways this can happen, preferably though there is at least a solid canon basis. More about that here.

Submissions:

Characters can be submitted in the google form linked. If you are not comfortable using a google form you can also shoot us an ask. You can submit as many characters as you like, but please do not spam the same character. This will not help their chances of getting in, in fact it might disqualify them from the showdown. If you’re not sure a character counts, feel free to shoot us an ask. Submissions will be open until at least August 1, but this is subject to change. Additionally, don’t assume your character has been submitted, they probably haven’t even if they are from a popular media.

LGBTQ Disabled Characters Mini-Showdown Round 1

Propaganda/Who is this:

Adam Parrish- One of us has read the first book in The Raven Cycle, but I don’t remember much other than that it’s got weird mythology and at least one dead person, that’s where he’s from. He seems cool.

Lord Blackheart: Very cool character, kind of a villain but not really. There’s a movie adaptation of Nimona coming out soon on Netflix. The book is really good and worth reading.

What is this showdown about?

This is a poll to determine the ultimate Deaf/HoH character.

Who can be submitted?

Any character with any level or type of hearing loss can be entered. Real people cannot be entered.

Where can characters be submitted?

Submissions can be in the comments or reblogs of this post. They can also be submitted in an ask. Propaganda is encouraged.

When will this completion run?

Submissions will run until June 7th, with the actual showdown starting in the next couple of days after. Each round will run for a week.

Why did we do this?

Because we thought it would be fun

Disclaimer:

Part. 1: If we don’t get a lot submissions we’ll just use what characters we know to run this poll.

Part. 2: Please tell us if we are using the wrong terminology for something, we are trying our best but mistakes can happen.

Part. 3: If by some strange happening of chance we end up with too many characters, the ones to not be run in the showdown would be the ones closest to reality or characters that only show up for a very short amount of time and have minimal impact on the plot.

What’s currently going on:

Round 5 will drop November 23 around UTC 16:00-17:30

When will the showdown get started:

This showdown will be started on April 10 around UTC 14:00

Round 2 will start on June 8.

General Showdown Information:

For this showdown the characters don’t have to be canon LGBTQ+ or disabled. As such if you see a character and are like why do they qualify, there is reasoning for it, and we can tell you why we included them. As a quick note, some qualifications/propaganda has been reworded to avoid using outdated language. Any changes like that will be denoted as so: [change]. Anything that is in italics is probably mod input, but without brackets nothing has been changed. If we miss any awkward/offensive terminology please let us know. The block button exists for a reason, please be civil.

Why are you running a poll about gay disabled characters and allowing headcannons? Why not focus on canon lgbt characters with disabilities?

Sorry for taking so long to respond, but I wanted to wait until after Round One was posted. (Ignore the fact that it is several days after round 1 finished posting, I got busy). ((Extra update: lol this is such a late response I haven’t been doing like anything)). Also, sorry for such an extensive breakdown on an honest question, we just want to have this to refer to if we get more questions like this.

A quick breakdown: This post will have four parts: a practical explanation, an explanation more related to our blog set up, just a more philosophical explanation, and under the cut a breakdown of more headcannon like characters.

Practical Explanation:

So one of the reasons why we decided to allow more headcanon like characters is simply the logistics on defining what is more fanon or not is a pain. If you look down at the list you can see there’s an ambiguous section, and that’s because especially regarding sexuality/gender often times there is conflicting opinions/information from actors, producers, whatever. (Ex. Many of the Star Trek characters (their various propaganda has decent information.)) Additionally in the cases of especially Spock and to some extent Frodo them being read as queer has a really long history through the fandom, so to discount them from this feels a bit weird. There are also other cases where due to time period of the media specifically there aren’t gonna be specific terms for some disabilities or sexualities or genders. Overall, there is just a lot of gray areas, and to be like some noncanon stuff counts but others don’t is kinda a hard line to draw. (That being said we did reject a few characters for really not fitting, all characters in the showdown have a decent explanation for being here.)

Blog Set Up Explanation:

This is a little bit more rude (sorry). Honestly, from the get go we’ve established that noncanon characters would count, we didn’t get any complaints until we actually started the polls, and there’s not any way that they will be taken out at this point. If you don’t agree with who we let be in the showdown don’t vote for them.

Philosophical Explanation:

On a more philosophical basis, characters can still resonate with people as having similar stories/experiences to them even if they are not canonically LGBTQ or disabled. This is a place that is celebrating LGBTQ and disabled characters, and if a character’s experiences are important to you why shouldn’t they qualify?

Note about qualifications: characters with disabilities that get cured do count as disabled, also word of god counts as confirmation.
