What Are Accommodation Services?
Accommodation services are a type of service that provides rooms, buildings or lodging for short term stays. These services include hotel, motel and bed & breakfast accommodations. They also include boarding facilities for students.
In a situation with an imbalanced power dynamic, accommodating can be a practical way to resolve conflict. It can help to preserve and enhance relationships.
Accommodations
Accommodation services are a vital part of the hospitality industry and offer many employment opportunities. Whether you run a hotel, hostel, bed and breakfast or serviced apartment, accommodation services can help you generate more revenue from your guests. However, it’s important to get the pricing right to attract customers and ensure profitability.
Accommodations are intended to help students with disabilities access the academic atmosphere of SUNY Potsdam. Students with documented ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) disabilities may request accommodations for course-related activities or examinations. The SSD (Student Support Disability) office will engage the student in an interactive process to explore accommodation options, review disability-related documentation and evaluate the unique attributes of each course activity or exam.
It is also possible to outsource some aspects of accommodation service. This can reduce operating costs and save time. It can also allow businesses to hire a team of skilled professionals who can meet their customer needs and deliver an excellent experience.
Taxes
Accommodation penrith services are businesses that sell shelter on a short-term basis, usually to travelers or tourists. These include hotels, motels, hostels, bed and breakfast accommodations, and commercially marketed private residences. These establishments offer complementary services, such as meals and laundry. The industry also includes recreational and entertainment facilities.
Taxes on lodging are levied by state, local, and municipal governments. Most states levy both a sales and lodging tax on overnight transient accommodations. Some also impose local bed taxes. The following table ranks the 50 states and the District of Columbia by total tax rate on lodging accommodations.
In addition to the sales and lodging tax, some hotels impose an additional charge for occupancy called a local bed tax. This is a separate tax from the room rate and must be shown separately on a hotel bill. For information on the taxability of this charge, see Tax Bulletin Hotel Services (TB-ST-333). Generally, local bed taxes are not subject to state and local sales and use tax.
Regulations
In the accommodation industry, there are a variety of regulations that govern the way accommodations can be used. These include laws regarding accessibility and taxation. In addition to these, there are also other rules that need to be followed, including those relating to student privacy and confidentiality. Students should be aware of these rules, especially as they pertain to student records and disability accommodations.
Businesses that offer accommodation services can use various strategies to generate more revenue, including effective branding and marketing. They should also focus on sustainability, which will appeal to environmentally-conscious travelers. In addition, they should use data to understand customer behaviors and make informed decisions about pricing and product availability. This will help them maximize revenue and achieve a competitive advantage. This is particularly important in an industry that can be highly competitive and price sensitive.

one of the reasons i hate generative AI is that i have a chronic injury that makes me unable to write by hand for longer than a few sentences and therefore i need a keyboard in order to write essays for classes, and i’m a bit worried that professors won’t allow me to type essays as a result of potential AI use, even though i have a perfectly valid medical reason to need a keyboard. i’ve seen a few posts online saying that the only way to prevent students from relying on AI is to make them write by hand, and while i understand the sentiment and don’t even necessarily disagree with the general point, the matter of accessibility still needs to be addressed somehow, and it’s just a bit frustrating on a personal level as someone who has had to fight with teachers and professors in order for my needs to be met even before the era of chatgpt

still so incredibly, incredibly, pissed and angry about the NDIS changes.
people are already dying, important things are already canceled, what the fuck was the point?
save a couple billion dollars?
okay? now people are dead what was the point again?
it's not going to help people like me who SHOULD be on the NDIS for support and life shit.
(hi I suffer from post-covid! and severe debilitating asthma! not to mention learning disabilities that make things incredibly inaccessible to me because the government THEMSELVES don't make shit accessible!!!!!)
(I live in hell YAY!/j)
not to mention all the people on the waiting lists who are literally straight up dying, we already have mortalities!!!!!!
WE'VE HAD MORTALITIES FOR YEARS!!!!
we've only had the NDIS since 2013, I grew up without support from the NDIS because well I was born in the 2000s lol and it took a solid few years after that for it to work out some kinks and by the time it ended up being okay as a thing I had been disabled for 10 years and had 0 supports lol, and my family had been paying out of pocket.
also like my entire family didn't have any disability supports before me either, no one had them in those days, no one in the old country we only really got anything literally in 2018-2019 for one of my bisnonni THAT'S HOW BAD THE NDIS IS BTW.
at the very least she had a carer for some time, but it was not even a possibility for such a long time.
that again, one of my other bisnonni was completely fucked over, same problems effected her even worse in her own right.
(NDIS actually care about old people challenge: FAILED)
ALSO imagine having rights! hahahahahah.
(actually sobbing rn. most of us DO NOT, we are payed less then abled people!!!!)
I am bitching and moaning everyday, because I'm not stupid none of us are, even us stupid people (ily fellow learning disabled ppl and intellectually disabled ppl) we have been greatly fucked over for decades and decades, and still with the bare fucking minimum shit it gets snatched or abused or we get scammed.
it's fucked, it's so, so, fucked.
medicare doesn't cover optical, dental, or a shit ton of other things.
the government straight up hates us all, I can not tell you the amount of bullshit I've been through, the ableism is intense!!!!! it's why I got so good at masking my very obvious learning disabilities fuck all of us for real.
like, the depression and STRAIGHT UP FEAR!!!
dude, fucked up shit.
I have so so many stories, I can't even begin to tell you.
honestly shame on 'em, I'm using my newfound free speech to bitch and moan.
because like, I do not genuinely think half the things that allow me to bitch and moan about being disabled was a thing when I was a kid, like genuinely!
honestly I wish international disabled allies could idk join in and be angry with us, we have all been through hell.
and it's fucked.

When Your Boss Refuses to Provide Workplace Disability Accommodations.
Recently we asked for a disabilility accomodation at work. Our boss instead gave us an ultimatum: figure it out for ourself by disclosing our disability to our coworkers and begging them to assist, or forfeit our position and take a pay cut to be accomodated.
Well. What The Fuck Do We Do Now?
First we googled our rights. These official US government websites were the most helpful:
Equal Employment Opportunity Comission
Job Accomodation Network
Office of Disability Employment Policy
Our state's Disability Law Center website
In summary, we learned that employers are legally required to accommodate disabilities. They are not required to meet one's request to the letter if it would cause undue hardship, but if they don't, they must carry out an interactive process with the employee to agree on an arrangement. There are conditions they cannot impose upon the employee (a pay cut being one of them!) and reasons that are inadequate for not accepting a request (that there may be complaints from nondisabled coworkers regarding the accommodation is an inadequate reason, for example).
We could have laid the law upon our boss ourself, but considering the direness of the situation we wanted to ensure we had protections against retaliation, such as firing, and be sure our boss gets the memo. So we called our state's Disability Law Office. We explained the situation to the intake specialist and sent supporting documentation (our accommodation request letter from our therapist, our diagnosis paperwork, and an audio recording* of the meeting I had with my bosses wherein she said the things above) to an email she provided. It was supposed to take a week for the case to get picked up; instead it took a week to get approved and 2 more weeks to get picked up. We spent a lot of time calling and getting voicemails in that time, and feeling hopeless with our boss's deadline looming over our head. So we visited the office in person. As soon as we did that, we were able to bypass the front desk lady and met with the Managing Attorney. She got the case assigned to an attorney and the attorney called us within the hour.
Our aim isn't to sue, and we do not want to file a complaint with the EEOC at this point in time. We just to get our attorney to email our boss or something to force her hand. We are currently waiting for him to send us his draft before he sends it to her. We'll update how it goes!
But our lessons learned here are:
if you want something done fast, stop calling or using online portals. visit the office in person.
utilize public services! they are nonprofit, so I'm getting help from an attorney for free!
always ALWAYS get names & contact info of specific personnel, especially if they are higher up the ladder. otherwise you will be stuck with a front desk worker and all the red tape involved with their job blocking your path.
know. your. rights!!!! never let anyone take them away from you, ever!
As always,
Jules & Cecil
* recording audio of someone without their consent is not legal in every state. I'm fortunate it is in mine, because my boss writes nothing down on purpose. be sure you know the laws before following my example!

Hey Gang!
I've been doing a lot of research at work my students when it comes to disclosing a disability in the workplace as well as educating them about their rights and responsibilities under the Americans w/ Disabilities Act (ADA) as an employee. I know a lot of us on here struggle with some sort of disability (myself included) so I just wanted to share these resources.

U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

honestly, at this point, most institutions' talk about being inclusive to people with disabilities rings so hollow to me because there's so often little to no work done to back it up. it doesn't matter how pretty your words sound if you don't actually do the damn work.

Ugh. So I'm trying to help a friend out. He got an Artist's booth at a small convention and this hotel is awful (especially in relation to any kind of accessibility). I'm exhausted, I'm frustrated, and honestly I just want to go home.
However, I've been looking around to see if there are any places to share/find accessibility ratings of places. I've found one so far and want to share with anyone else interested (so far, most places don't have many/any ratings, but we have to start somewhere right?):
iAccess allows users to label their own restrictions and accessibility needs, but mostly focuses on mobility
Any other options or suggestions? Apps or websites?
