Enough Persephone/Hades "retellings", gimme a modern kinda horroresque version of the Bacchae, where a mysterious young man returns to his mother's home town, where her family had her shunned for getting pregnant by a traveling man who spent a few months working for her family(who is implied to be not-human)

This young man seemingly isn't entirely human, and starts fucking with the townsfolk (who are maybe like heavily repressed religious folk), dancing, theatre/movies, and alcohol are banned(which can be argued are related to Dionysiac worship). Sex and sexuality are tightly controlled, the town is deeply repressive. Queue this young man arriving and disrupting everything all the while showing/revealing his family's hypocrisy, and getting some sweet justice over how they treated his mother who suffered after being thrown out of the family, shamed, and made to fend for herself.

And yes it ends with like the family's current patriarch being ripped apart by his female relatives, all the while "Dionysus" watches with glee as the whole town also descends into a temporary madness and left being "freed", like a painful boil after being lanced, it hurts, it's kinda gross, but the healing can now begin.

Like from what I remember studying the Bacchae, the main themes were Dionysus was punishing Semele's family for a) denying she got knocked up by Zeus, and thus denying Dionysus's divinity, b) preventing his cult from being worshipped in Thrace or something. Combine that with modern American conservativism and puritanism, and Dionysus representing the opposite of all that coming into town whether the townfolk and the controlling family (I like to imagine Semele's family running a mega-church or something that holds huge power over the town) want it or not.

I don't want to end someones fun, but more childlike, funny and androginous dionysus is a later interpretation of the deity, I'm not saying this Representation is not acurate it is!, but older interpretations have him with a beard and usullaly in the 20-30 region, so If you want also to draw him in that way, there's nothing wrong, as drawing him transmac, amdrogynious, etc....

Dionysous is a deity who went trough an increíble transformation, from a god of madness, intoxication and wine and being bearded and horned middle-age Man (Orpheus dionysous, the Maeneads being his cult of intoxicated followers), to a more softy, less madness and more getting high with wine and hedonism, (the Midas myth).

So yeah Dionysus is a shape shifter in history that has had the best anti-aging routine and went from 20-30 something to sometimes a literal child, hahaha

having delved into greek mythology tumblr a bit i've seen a lot of things like "transmasc dionysus" "nonbinary dionysus" etc but if i told people about my own personal perspective (transfem dionysus), most of them would probably want to rip me to shreds. which is, i think, exactly what i should be going for

Dionysus isn't a meme

every time i look through the "Dionysus" tag, all i get is percy jackson, the hades game, cute fanart of him and'/or ariadne, or funny haha memes. so few people seem to understand that Dionysus is not just some silly little androgynous fella who loves wine and his wife. He's a god of contradictions, being both one of the oldest and youngest gods worshipped for thousands of years. He's a liberator, not only of the mental cage and burdens of society, but literally, he would travel around and free people who were being treated unfairly.

I've read that archaeologists still sometimes can't tell if art is of Jesus or Dionysus. Dionysus gave us theatre, a way to tell stories on a much grander scale to a much wider audience. He sees no gender or sexuality, for he is of them all, and he calls and accepts everyone who desires to be free.

Sure, yes, he can be silly, he can be flamboyant, and he'll do anything for his loved ones, but he's not just a goofy guy for people to use in joke text memes. this is my patron god. he's been with me my whole life. part of my life is devoted to theatre, my greatest passion, because of him. i feel comfortable with my mental illnesses and femininity because of him. yes, i may call him my dude and think of him as my fun, goofy uncle or whatever, but he seriously means a lot to me. practically every aspect of my life has been touched by him. he frees me from my doubts and insecurities. he encourages me to pursue life's delights in spite of my struggles. he gives me HOPE.

the whole reason i named this blog after Dionysus is because i've always held him in my heart, and he has always been here for me. please don't just water him down to a funny guy who drinks wine.

Aphrodite and Adonis

Adonis in the Myths

Adonis was a mortal prince on the island of Kypros. When his mother Myrrha was killed by her father and turned into a myrrh tree, the baby Adonis was given to Persephone who raised him. When he grew, both Aphrodite and Persephone loved him and fought over who would get to be with him. In one version of the myth, Zeus settled the dispute by saying that each goddess got to spend one third of the year with him and Adonis got to pick who he would spend the last third with. He chose Aphrodite, and the two were practically inseparable. In another version, the muse Calliope suggested that both Aphrodite and Persephone would get to spend half of the year with Adonis.

Sadly, Adonis is mostly known for his tragic death. The most common version is that Adonis was wounded by a boar sent by either Ares (angry that Aphrodite was spending so much time with Adonis), Artemis (angry that Aphrodite had killed Hippolytus), or Apollo (angry that Aphrodite had blinded his son) and bled to death in Aphrodite’s arms. Some myths say that he was later resurrected as a god of beauty and attraction, or of love.

Their Relationship

In the myths, Aphrodite loves Adonis deeply, and most of the time, he loves her just as much. In my personal experience, I have never interacted with Prince Adonis but I can tell that Lady Aphrodite loves him a lot.

Children

Aphrodite and Adonis had two children, a daughter and a son. Their daughter was named Beroe, or in some cases Amymone, and she was a nymph of Beirut. She served the goddess Artemis and was a lover of Poseidon. Aphrodite and Adonis’ son was named Golgos and was said to be the founder of the city of Golgi.

- The festival Adonia was celebrated annually by women in ancient Greece to mourn the death of Prince Adonis. When the river Adonis turned red with what was thought to be his blood (but is actually soil washed off the mountains by heavy rain), women (especially in Athens) would celebrate on their rooftops; dancing, singing, and planting “Gardens of Adonis” (lettuce and fennel seeds in potsherds). After this, they would hold a funeral procession in his honor, which included burying images of him and the remains of their gardens near the sea or springs.

- Adonis is associated with anemone flowers, also known as windflowers. This is because Aphrodite’s tears mixed with his blood were said to lead to the growth of these flowers.

- Adonis was not only loved by Aphrodite and Persephone, but Apollo, Dionysus, and Herakles. He was said to be androgynous as he acted “like a man in his affections for Aphrodite but as a woman for Apollo”
