994: Dinah Jams
One of the finest jazz records of all time and this is why:
Dinah Washington - vocals Clifford Brown - trumpet Maynard Ferguson - trumpet Clark Terry - trumpet Herb Geller - alto saxophone Harold Land - tenor saxophone Richie Powell - piano Junior Mance - piano George Morrow - double bass Keter Betts - double bass Max Roach - drums
I listen to this album at least a dozen times per year as a reminder of how excellent vocal jazz is and can be. Recorded live in LA in 1954 (a good year for jazz) this performance just goooooooes.
noteworthy tracks: Lover Come Back To Me, Summertime, Come Rain Or Come Shine, I've Got You Under My Skin, There Is No Greater Love, You Go To My Head

Dinah Washington – Back to the Blues
Back to the Blues is a fifteenth studio album by Dinah Washington, arranged by Fred Norman. “… This is a more successful date than Washington’s earlier investigation of Bessie Smith material, since the backup band is more sympathetic and the talented singer is heard in prime form. Dinah Washington clearly had a real feeling for this bluesy material” (Scott Yanow/AllMusic).

“Flying Home: Harlem Heroes and Heroines (Downtown and Uptown)” (1996), Faith Ringgold’s mosaic artwork at 125th Street (2/3) station, honors notable figures of Harlem’s past and makes them fly, keeping the life and spirit of these influential people alive. Pictured here flying above the Apollo Theater, which is currently celebrating its 85th Anniversary, are Dinah Washington, Florence Mills, Ralph Cooper, Billie Holiday and The Ink Spots. A selection of Ringgold’s work inspired by her relationship with jazz and the rich cultural and political heritage of the neighborhood is on exhibit at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling in “Sugar Hill Songbook: Select Work by Faith Ringgold”  through March 31. #BlackHistoryMonth
