elsie likes elbert, but has a slight resentment towards him. this is mainly because of the juniper tree tale.

marlinchen's brother (unnamed) has the "snow white" looks. parallels between elbert and elsie.

the stepmother (marlinchen's mother) hates the son because he will receive the family fortune. it's also implied she hates him because of all the love and attention he gets.

marlinchen doesn't hate her brother. in fact, it's the opposite. a) she asks her mother if she will give him an apple too. b) she shows concern for his lifeless body + when she punches off the head (at her mother's command). c) she buries him underneath the tree with her best handkerchief.

so yes, elsie feels a strange affection towards elbert, but she's a tad jealous because of all the attention alfons gives him
