Royal Archetype Symbolism:
This will be major spoilers for the endgame of Metaphor Refantazio from 9/24 onwards. Do not read this if you donā€™t want spoilers from here on or the entire game for that matter.
The Royal Archetypes are the final Archetypes to be unlocked in the game. They are some of the strongest Archetypes in the game and are exclusive to the respective party members. I.e., Royal Warrior for Strohl, Royal Knight for Hulkenburg, etc.
With the exception of The Prince (which is unlocked automatically and is their own Archetype separate from the Seeker), the Royal Archetypes are essentially Prime Personas. To give an example, Orpheus Telos from Persona 3 FES onwards is a reference to Prime Personas in Persona 2, which serve as mid tier evolutions for the Personas. Royal Warrior, among others, are the ā€œPrime Personaā€ counterparts to their initial forms.
Furthermore, the Royal Archetypes requires the Max Rank 8 in the bonds of your allies.
I mainly want to talk about the requirements for each Royal Archetypes and how they take after to the Followers of the respective Followers that embodies said Archetypes:
This includes the following:
ā€¢ Samurai + Warlord = Royal Warrior
ā€¢ Paladin + Dark Knight + Elemental Master = Royal Knight
ā€¢ Ninja + Dragoon + Tycoon = Royal Thief
ā€¢ Persona Master + Trickster = Royal Masked Dancer
ā€¢ Devil Summoner + Soul Hacker = Royal Summoner
ā€¢ Destroyer + Martial Artist = Royal Berserker
So based on these requirements needed to unlock the Royal Archetypes not named Prince, you notice how each of the Archetypes are the final forms that are linked to many followers of the game. Warlord is Bardon, Elemental Master is Gallica, Dragoon and Tycoon are Neuras and Brigitta respectively, Trickster is Alonzo, and Martial Artist is Catherina.
Soul Hacker is an interesting case; while the Seeker Archetype is embodied by More, Will (the Protagonist) is the one who awoken to the Archetype. And even then, it makes sense once you realize that More is the deceased King Hythlodaeus V who is the father of the Prince Will. Ergo, Will inherited the Seeker Archetype from his father.
This postā€™s main purpose is to show how each character foils to the Followers who have the Archetypes that ties to the requirements for the Royal Archetypes. Be it their tribes, personalities, role in their stories and roles in Willā€™s ascension to the throne, etc.

āƒ Strohl and Bardon; the way of the Royal Warriorā€™s sword:
ā—¦ Bardonā€™s Archetype embodiment is the Commander linage (where Warlord stems from), which focuses on strategy by hitting elemental weaknesses and bypassing resistance via Almighty attack, buffing party members and attacking advantage of the front and back rows. This fits perfectly with Strohl being the main strategist of the party. Starting with the Heismay Arc until halfway through the Altabury Arc, Strohl has been shown being the one to plan out each strategy Will and Co. have for the Tournament for the Throne.
ā—¦ Both Strohl and Bardon deal with the burden of their respective countrymen in their own ways. Strohlā€™s story resolves around wishing to avenge the death of his parents and the victims of Halia (a village that was destroyed by a Human attack). Bardon is a Guardsman for the village of Martira and becomes their leader after the events of exposing the true culprit behind the kidnappings (Joanna, not Heismay).
ā—¦ Strohlā€™s follower story focuses on his efforts to help the survivors of the village, an owe to his creed as a noble to help people in need. While Bardon must face his own struggles in helping the people of Martira. Later in Bardonā€™s Bond, we are tasked with fighting the same Human that we had to escape from the butt before Martira shares the same fate as Halia.
ā—¦ Both Strohl and Bardon are good people, but quick to anger. When all is said and done, they bare a great burden to the people that they feel they failed to protect. Be it the victims of Halia or the people in Martira who suffered from the kidnappings Joanna caused. And by the end, they learn not to shoulder their burdens alone as they both make their deceased predecessorsā€™ proud.

āƒ Hulkenburg and Gallica; wisdom of the Royal Knightā€™s shield:
ā—¦ Hulkenburg is of the Knight Archetype, while Gallica (while she canā€™t fight, is still considered to be a party member) is of the Mage Archetype. Hulkenburgā€™s introduction in the party is when Synthesis Skills (where Archetypes grant power to another Archetype for a team attack) is unlocked. Later stages of the Mage Archetype have skills that better the usages of Synthesis Skills (Wizardā€™s Arcane Unity and Elemental Masterā€™s Magic Link). Synthesis Skills are about teamwork and the bonds of friendship, as well as strategies in the Archetypes you use.
ā—¦ Both Hulkenburg and Gallica are devoted in their mission to save the prince, and they are both unwavering in their loyalties to those they devoted their power and trust to. However, the truth behind the princeā€™s identity and the true culprit behind the curse alludes them. The Prince was Will all along and was cursed by Rella, not Louis. And also, both of them knew Grius/Alces longer than anyone else and are heavily impacted by his death and the fight against his undead self.
ā—¦ Even after learning the truth among other truths, their devotion to the true prince (Will) only became stronger than it ever was before. Hulkenburg is delighted to know that Will was the Prince the whole time and that everything she did wasnā€™t in vain. And Gallica learns that the memory of her and Will being long time friends was just a fabrication. This doesnā€™t stop Gallica from being Willā€™s friend and would continue to devote herself to him of her own volition.
ā—¦ Beyond that, they both have self deprecation issues as far as their roles are concerned. Gallica has been shown very early into the game that she wishes to help Will as much as possible and feels regret when heā€™s in danger. And Hulkenburg doubts her role as a knight for not being able to save the prince. Will seems to be an emotional button for them as well. Hulkenburg turns into a grieving mess when the original prince is found dead during the events of 9/24. And when Will dies by crushing his vessel to prevent his second Human transformation at Louisā€™s hand, poor Gallica is left crying over his fresh corpse.
ā—¦ Overall, in their own ways, both Gallica and Hulkenburg have Will as their emotional guide because the two of them are devoted to him in their own ways.

āƒ Heismay, Neuras and Brigitta; the Royal Thiefā€™s walk of atonement:
ā—¦ Heismay, Neuras and Brigitta are interesting combination of characters to talk about considering that all of their Archetypes play wildly different roles. A Thief, a Gunner and a Merchant. How exactly do all of these Archetypes work to fit with the requirements for the Royal Thief archetype?
ā—¦ Itā€™s not necessarily the gameplay that tied them together. Itā€™s their respective roles in who they are as people. What do I mean by this? Itā€™s simple, Heismay, Neuras and Brigitta are all adult followers. And as adults, they have their own personal burdens that ends with them resolving to ensure that the younger generation doesnā€™t pay the price for the old onesā€™ mistakes.
ā—¦ Both Heismay and Brigitta are both cynical about the world around them as a result of their backstories: Heismay lost his child to a Paripus riot, while Brigitta was a street urchin who became cynical of the ways of the world. Itā€™s thanks to Willā€™s actions that both of them begin to find hope and walk out of their respective dark paths.
ā—¦ Heismay and Neuras are both the only known characters in the team that actually drink. Neuras has been drunk a few times, while Heismay is very careful with how much alcohol he consumes. He only became drunk when he ate the Dragonā€™s Tear (not that he could have known its properties until was too late).
ā—¦ On a more serious note, while both of their sidequests and stories resolve around certain items (Heismayā€™s sonā€™s remains and the Relics), both of their Bond stories end with a resolution regarding them. Heismay decides to turn his sonā€™s urn into a necklace with Euphaā€™s help, while Neuras destroys the relics after realizing their world destroying properties. So in a way, both Heismay and Neuras learn from the past so that the future wonā€™t be affected by it later on.
ā—¦ To me, Heismay serves as the adult figure of the group that Grius initially served. Some may say that Griusā€™s death unintentionally undermines that message of equality between the races as the team loses their only Rhoag representative. While I can understand the sentiment, Griusā€™s spirit remains with the cast through other characters like Maria. Heismay and Neuras serves as the adult figures for the team twice over, and Brigitta, while not a party member, is a fellow Rhoag that knew Grius.
ā—¦ Heismay finds similar themes with Neuras and Brigitta through the fact that they are the adult figures that fills the void Grius left behind. His spirit is with us through various ways, and it shows here.

āƒ Junah and Alonzo: the Royal Masked Dancerā€™s hidden depths:
ā—¦ Junah and Alonzo both are of the Nidia tribe, often deem by other tribes as deceiving, lying scum. And itā€™s not hard to see why they get the reputation. Both Junah and Alonzo both use deception in their own way, but they both do it for greater good.
ā—¦ Junah is acting as an undercover agent on Louisā€™ side, working to find a way to break the princeā€™s curse. While Alonzo uses his deception to help Will, acting as the future Kingā€™s intelligence advisor. Both also have adoptive family members of different races that ultimately die in their stories (For Junah, Rella who is an Ishika, and Alonzoā€™s mother who was a Paripus). And Junah and Alonzoā€™s actions going forward are in their memories.
ā—¦ Their respective Archetypes in Masked Dancer and Faker both have final forms that serve as a reference to the Persona games: Persona Master takes after mainly Persona 3 and 4, while Trickster mainly takes after 5. Persona Masterā€™s main Synthesis Skill is shown to be reference to both 3 and 4 via the Tarot Cards, the Invokers that SEES uses (which are guns) and cut ins. While Trickster is based on what P5ā€™s Joker is often called in the story: ā€œA Trickster.ā€
ā—¦ Junah and Alonzo both aspire to be beacons of hope to those around them in their own ways and are good people at the end of the day. Junahā€™s singing is what gives her hope, and she wishes to spread that hope to others. While Alonzo uses his lies to help the people around him, even if they deem him a ā€œparasite.ā€

āƒ Eupha and Will (son of More): the Royal Summonerā€™s journey through life:
ā—¦ I have already made a post on how the Seeker linage being the prerequisite to evolve the Summoner Archetype is fitting with Euphaā€™s growing love for Will throughout their bond: https://www.tumblr.com/jaredxenoengage/765352399442526208/i-love-that-euphas-archetype-summoner-requires but letā€™s see if there is more to it than that.
ā—¦ The Seeker Archetype, as we know, is the Archetype that is cultivated by More/King Hythlodaeus V, who is Willā€™s father. Will awakens to the Seeker Archetype linage first, and not the Prince. So while More isnā€™t a party member, Will is. So technically speaking, out of all of the Royal Archetype requirements, this makes Eupha the only one that needs a linage that was awaken by a fellow Party Member.
ā—¦ Will (knowing that he is the Prince) and Eupha had both lost their parents, obviously. And both of them have ties with the greater lore of the entire game as a whole, which depicts stories of the old world that was once humankind (which is what Eldas are). Eupha has a sworn duty to fight alongside the Dragon God: Eht, Dragons are made of pure Magla. With the revelation that Will is the Archetype of the Prince given a human form, he too is a being a pure Magla. Which is why Eupha was able to speak through his mind during her introduction. Just as Eupha is meant to fight alongside the beloved god, Eupha also finds herself fighting alongside another being made of Magla. This plot point compliments itself further with the Dragon Trialā€™s (which were made for the protagonist) in mind.
ā—¦ As for More, itā€™s the same thing as Will, he is the Archetype form of King Hythlodaeus V who was killed by Louis at the start of the story. How do Eupha and More foil each other? The main difference between them is that Hythlodaeus lost hope because of the death of his wife and the lost of his son. He sought his own death and used the Royal Magic in hopes that he could make someone into a better king than he was. While Eupha was convinced her whole life that her life was meant to be sacrificed for the sake of her village. Eupha eventually breaks free from this mindset and awakens to her Archetype. Eupha did what More could not in her lifetime, find hope and a reason to live.
ā—¦ The Elite forms of the Summoner and Seeker Archetypes are both named after the Atlus related games: Devil Summoner and Soul Hacker respectively.
ā—¦ And itā€™s just Eupha herself says in game, she, like Will has the power to journey into the unknown world. An unknown future. Will had the power to awaken this resolve in her, and with it, blossom potential love between the two.

āƒ Basilio and Catherina; the Paripusā€™ Royal Berserker soul:
ā—¦ Basilio and Catherina are both Paripus with rough dispositions on the surface, but both prove to be earnest people. They both initially had reasons to oppose the protagonist at first; Basilio was working with Louis, the one who killed the king. While Catherina, who is a fellow candidate. has no hard feelings towards Will, but she wants to become Queen to help the future of the Paripus. Both eventually see the folly of what they were doing and eventually turn coat (Basilio joins the team after his brotherā€™s death, while Catherina drops out of the race because her folks were crossing a line she wouldnā€™t have).
ā—¦ The Berserker and Brawler Archetypes both revolve around physical strike attacks and dishing out as much damage as possible. Notice how Berserker doesnā€™t use HP like Brawler does. Basilio may be of the Berserker Archetype, but when he is calm, Basilio is a lot more insight than it would seem. As he is the first person to truly question if what Louis is doing is truly right for him and his brother, and the future of those that canā€™t fend for themselves. Catherina is much more reckless in comparison. And it takes seeing how her race to become Queen becomes a risk for Paripus to go the extreme to get ahead to see that what she is doing might bring more harm than good.
ā—¦ Even their Follower Stories are mainly different with some similarities being that itā€™s about Basilio and Catherina stopping their fellow tribesmen from crossing further lines. At least Catherina was able to convince followers to walk down a better path eventually, but Basilio isnā€™t as fortunate. As he was forced to put Vinca down.

āƒ Will; the princeā€™s path to be king:
ā—¦ 9/24 reveals that Will is a living breathing Archetype created from the Princeā€™s wish to travel the world and lead the kingdom to peace. The Seeker Archetype was the first Archetype to awaken in Will. It embodies the very essence of this gameā€™s themes to explore the unknown without fear.
ā—¦ As Will journey continues, and he eventually learns who he really is, the Prince Archetype embodies the Ruler Archetype from Carl Jungā€™s 12 Archetypes (which is what the aforementioned powers are based on). And based on Carl Jungā€™s take on the Ruler Archetype, it also falls in line with the themes of what makes a good king.
ā—¦ In contrast to his father; as the previous king, gave up on his hope that he had for the Kingdom. As such, by leaving most of the circumstances in Fordenā€™s hands, Louis lost all faith in him and decides to kill him. Will becomes king and defeats Louis by staying true to his ideals.
ā—¦ Although the Prince Archetype is its own Archetype, it takes after the Seeker Archetype in many ways. It has the same One Handed Sword usage, the same Hero Passive in Cooperative Chase, and has the most Synthesis access in the game. However, Seeker doesnā€™t have Synthesis Synergy with the Summoner Archetype (ironic given that Will and Eupha are the most romantic coded relationship in the game). Euphaā€™s Arc contains the most truth about the old world in all of Euchronia. We get the full truth about the old world after Will awakens to his true Archetype, which can perform Synthesis Skills and grant them between all Archetypes. This is when Will and Euphaā€™s bond is at its strongest.
The fact that so much intention to detail that comes with the Archetypes and the Followers is the type of writing talent that I have come to expect from Atlus.

Svsss one piece au where:
Luo Binghe is on an adventure to becoming king of the pirates with Mobei-jun is his right hand man. Binghe would be a Blood-Blood fruit user and Mobei-jun the Ice-Ice Fruit.
Shen Yuan and Shang Qinghua are Marines sent to collect the hefty bounty on their heads. They aren't really good at their jobs though. Both of them easy distracted by food, monsters and other things.
Shang Qinghua would still be a dubble agent and only slightly a god while Shen Yuan is just some monster nerd everyone wants for some reason. Shang Qinghua would be a Scroll-Scroll Fruit user and Shen Yuan a "Gum-Gum Fruit user".
Both of them incredibly underestimate their own strengths despite being incredibly overpowered. Leading to some really funny moments where they absolutely decimate pirates that took Binghe's crew WEEKS to recover from like it's nothing only to be like :
" You guys are too strong we could never beat you guys face to face šŸ˜ž."
" WOW! That [basic martial arts move] is so cool and impressive!!! I wish I was that strong."
"Oh Luo Binghe's crew is wayyyy stronger then us for sure. Don't know why you keep sending us out to get them instead of some other guy."
They both join Binghe's crew in the end though.

Shang tsung doesn't need to be a "good guy" to be sympathetic or do nice or "good" deeds.
Y'all should understand that not everyone needs to be a hero to be redeemed.
That's some bullshit propaganda that y'all tend to fall for.
It's like that feeling of "if you pray to jesus,all you're sins in OUR eyes will be forgiven" type indoctrinated shit. Like no shade thrown,even as someone who is spiritual myself. I find people thinking that a villain in a story should become a hero in order to be redeemed,kinda suspicious.
Shang tsung,to me,has ALWAYS BEEN NUANCED. And already had benevolent qualities and traits. Y'all just only see one damn part of it because the writers suck at showing them properly.
Not to mention if a character isn't obnoxiously nice or mean,y'all don't pay attention to them.
It's like most of mk fans I've noticed,at least as of late. Feels like I'm talking to 3yr olds in media literacy.
So no. Shang tsung needs to be a NEUTRAL CHARACTER. not good,not evil,just self serving and even quite helpful as a tournament master as he is supposed to fucking be.
He is supposed to be that "keep your friends close,keep you enemies closer" type. He is the "the enemy of my enemies are my friends" type. He's scary intelligent,cunning,a master martial artist,a brilliant alchemist,and one badass mofo you do not wanna cross.
But most of all,he is courteous,a gracious host on his island,and his punishments are as great as his rewards. He does keep his end of the bargain,but he also gets compensation.
If anything you need to worry about earthrealms warriors more than him. Half of them now(due to piss poor writing) are hiding behind heroic deeds and false statements of peace yet they have unclean hands too.
With Shang tsung you know what you are dealing with,it's on the table. If you cant read the obvious,you are indeed a foolish one.
No matter what iteration of shang tsung you have. One thing is clear,made clear,and that is when you deal with him. You deal with the devil so to speak.
So if you're not smart nor prepared. That's on your ass honey. Not his. Do not blame him for your stupidity.
But if you know how to play the game,play chess with the serpent. And know these archetypes. Then you may have a better shot. But that's all on you.
Either way,in your favor or not. Do not blame him for telling you exactly what is needed to be said,not what you wanna hear. Honeyed words or not,there's always a sliver of truth and bitter pill of truth in his words. And he's good at making either people hate his guts or bow and worship him.
THAT IS WHY HE'S DANGEROUS. not because of magic,or experiments and other trival bullshit.

It's because shang tsung is good at talking. Good at trades and making you believe whatever is what he wants you to see.
Even if it may go against him. He wants you to fuck up,get angry at him,attack,be unbalanced,so he can fuck your shit right up!
Holy shit this mans whole ass moveset is zoning and keeping you in a certain place in the stage even!
It's part of his whole damb character.
I could go on and on. But do not blame to serpent for telling you information for questions you ask him. You're the one who chose to bite his apple of enlightenment and knowledge so to speak.
Which is why the gods,titans,etc want these kombatants,warriors to be stupid. So they are easy to control,to get what they want.
Like it's glaringly obvious that mortal kombats story has these type of tropes and symbolism in it. But people are too blind,for various reasons. To see it.
I could get deep. It's a videogame,i know. It is what it is.
But the more i look at mk12/mk1 shang tsung. The more i feel its a missed opportunity to showcase these themes better for him.
Like holy shit dude. Shang tsung pointing out the hypocrisy of the gods. And whispers in our earthrealm warriors ears. And maybe convincing a few to join his side. Or even better. Our heroes,kung lao and mortal raiden to question liu kang and not blindly follow like fucking idiots. Sure just trust this dude right? Bruh.
Shang tsung is the only one with a brain once again. And i hate them making everyone else so stupid to make him seem better in the shithole plot of theirs. If you can call it a plot.
It burns me,that it's a waste of potential.
But i digress.

I love that the big villain reveal in The Legend of Ruby Sunday was closely preceded - thematically heralded - by playing a VHS tape backwards
makes for a great full-circle moment when paired with the signal for the start of this arc being the use of a salt circle: from very old superstition to much newer superstition, as this ancient evil arrives out of the depths of history into the modern age

I love that Euphaā€™s Archetype; Summoner requires the Seeker archetype (Willā€™s starting Archetype) in order to learn and even evolve this Archetype. Royal Summoner (Euphaā€™s Royal Archetype) requires mastery of her Devil Summoner and Soul Hacker Archetypes respectively. Further the ship between Eupha and Will.

Ive been playing Metaphor re Fantazio and. Much to say.
The short of it is though: thank fuck for a NEW game. Really new. Not part of some series, not a sequel or a prequel or a remake, new. New! I would appreciate companies continuing to make new games once in a while! Taking a fucking risk. Thank you.
The long of it is: if you like jrpgs, turn based games, a distinct art concept, and would like to play a game where you live out a life in a fantasy fairy tale esque world where your childhood best friend the prince has an evil curse causing him to slumber, and the man who cursed him in order to usurp the throne has just also killed the King and escalated his power grab by purposely summoning humans* (the most terrifying monster in this world), amd you need to undo the curse on your friend the prince and combat this killer save the world? Then this is the game for you.
It has some vibes that remind me of Drakengard (which I'm fucking thrilled by - the humans as monsters, a world of no magic as this story's own fantasy stories it tells, the banning of technology, the curses and monstrous humans and ancient relics of unknown origin, the fantasy novels in the game of a utopia of an equal world, the very well developed various cultures and political issues), bits that remind me of Dungeon Meshi (the main guy just being a Guy - whom I love a lot - with a regular guy voice and a regular ass height and an ordinary low status elda and just in the plot because he cared about his friend the prince initially! The group you gather as a party, the worldbuilding is very fantasy with some darker elements in their lore but the visuals are very Embrace Colorful fantasy the way Dungeon Meshi is). The politics of it, very heavy politics (you're spending part of the game trying to gather support to be king from the people), the character designs, remind me a bit of Berserk. I get a little bit of Dragon Age Inquisition vibes (but inquisition wasted so much of my time with side quests w no payoff and mundane tasks and no real ending unless i got the dlc so i dont wanna think of it) and Metaphor already is is giving me payoff in story, what I love most, for whatever I do in the game... whether I travel, spend time with a supporter, read a book in the game, do a random task to increase my traits skills, or progress the plot with main story dungeons... I'm rewarded with story and worldbuilding and character stories. I love games like this. In a way, its like Yakuza for me, because Yakuza games also always reward me with story or lore or an activity I have fun doing, so no time in the games is ever actually boring or annoying for me.
The difficulty level of Metaphor, for me, is also awesome. Theres easier modes if you just want a good story (so anyone can enjoy it), and I am able to play on normal and actually manage it! If you enjoy harder difficulties then I cant speak for how good or bad those are, as I'm too chicken to play a turn based jrpg on hard. I dont like level grinding ToT. Normal difficulty so far has not required me to level grind much, just fighting as it comes up in my playthrough has been enough to get me to the level needed to continue managing the main story material.
Give it an hour to see if its your kind of game, there will be story setup and combat by then. Give it until the big assassination attempt, if you want to get used to the feel of the story and if it's going to be something you want to get deep into. Because I'm guessing this is going to be a Persona kind of game in the sense of an 80-100 hour fucking story. I mostly only play 30-50 hour games (except Yakuza and Lost Judgement really entertain me lol so those easily get me playing all the mini games for hours), so for me, I needed to know I was going to be into the story.
I think the game is incredibly charming, plays well, has interesting worldbuilding and story (thats not just surface level - they thought it out well), and the anime cutscenes are cool but throw me (Im used to seeing 5 special ones in old ps2 games, and none nowadays, so i feel like im playing a show for a second every time i get another animated cutscene). Its extremely fun if you were looking for a good fantasy game, with a NEW story and world.
(Again. Im super grateful and excited that this game is not a part of an existing series. Its a whole new world, and that feels great.)

Geomancer (Pathfinder Second Edition Archetype)

And here we are following up with yet another geomancer in another edition of the game!
Like the previous subject, this mystic draws power from the terrain itself, but since itā€™s open to any spellcasting class, it does not automatically retain much of the esoteric aesthetic it had when it was part of the occultist class.
Additionally, this version is much more about enhancing the casterā€™s preexisting spells than it is about granting new spells or abilities based on terrain type, though there is a bit of the latter there too.
Indeed, whether they are primal casters tapping into the land, arcane or occult casters drawing upon ley lines, or divine casters asking their nature-themed deity to intervene in a thematic way, the power of these geomancers changes with the terrain they stride upon, though they can change things up as well in their own way, as weā€™ll see below.
The basic dedication to this archetype grants their iconic ability, allowing them to choose to attune to the terrain if it matches up with an aspect of a spell they are casting. By doing so, they gain additional effects, some which aid them, others which hinder foes they target with the spell or that are otherwise nearby. These include water spells granting enhanced movement in aquatic environs; icy spells using the arctic chill to coat foes in ice and slow them; fiery spells using the dry heat of the desert to dehydrate foes; plant spells conjuring vines and roots to hinder foes in the forest; earth spells drawing upon the might of the mountain to harden your flesh; plant spells in plains drawing upon nearby life to bolster your own vitality; air spells in the sky giving you a little push with the wind; plant spells in swamps venting toxic fumes on foes; and finally, earth spells in the underground enhancing your senses.
However, sometimes a geomancerā€™s spell selection or needed spells donā€™t match the terrain. As such, some learn to cheat the attunement by casting a spell of another aspect and using the residual spell energies to bolster spells of the same type as if they were in the correct terrain in the near future.
Not content to keep such power to themselves, some geomancers learn to grant the benefits of their magics to a nearby ally as well.
Just as they draw upon the landscape, they can also push back to manipulate it, setting up a stance which causes local terrain to become difficult for all others. Ice becomes slippery, undergrowth springs up, rocks become jagged, loose, and uneven, and so on.
Meanwhile, many can use their attunement to part and smooth terrain they themselves travel through, striding with confidence.
Some learn to draw vitality from the land itself, even more so if they are also tapping into the plains attunement at the same time!
Others learn to truly read the land, learning a great deal from it the magical energies coursing through it.
With a mighty blow to the ground, some geomancers can make the earth around them shift and upend, potentially sending foes stumbling.
Gaining protection from the terrain is another common ability, as the terrain shifts to block incoming blows on occasion.
Among the most powerful of these mystics can draw upon the power of the terrain to offload some of the burden of casting their next spell to the landscape itself, letting them cast their attuned spell faster than normal.
Depending on how far and wide your travels go in your campaign, this archetype can work well with either a focused sort of spellcaster or one that taps into a diverse array of elements and magics. With that in mind, you can tap very lightly into the archetype to just get the benefits of the dedication, or you can go whole hog for a caster that can control the battlefield while moving freely and even gain some healing and information utility as well. Much like 1Eā€™s occultist geomancer, the more you invest in the archetype, the more youā€™ll get out of it. Of course, this archetype is only available to spellcasters, and arcane and primal seem to be the best choices for sheer variety of keywords associated with the different terrains, but Iā€™m certain that an enterprising player can make it work with other sorts of casters.
I feel like these geomancers, regardless of discipline, have a lot to share with each other about the mysteries of the earth itself and the power it can offer. Perhaps there are symposiums about the subject, or maybe geomancy is relegated to esoteric texts rarely considered by the mainstream magical community?
The party has been seeking a confluence of ley lines to restore a magic artifact, but they are not the only ones seeking it. Indeed, they are currently being tailed by a zebub, and the accuser devil relays this information to itā€™s diabolic masters so that they might use it to open a stable portal to their foul realm.
Though his mastery of the wizardry arts is well-known, Vegizbar has long eluded witch hunters due to his atypical mastery of magic that manipulates and taps into the terrain. Indeed, some of his pursuers wonder if he has some sort of druidic accomplice.
Orcs have a long-standing shamanistic tradition known as Earthsinging, in which they invoke the secrets of the earth through their stories and songs, not only for the object lessons they convey, but also in the power they can draw from the landscape when needed. According to them, this power is a gift from the spirits of the world in exchange for letting their voices be heard.
