Countries featured: Poland, Estonia, Slovakia and Ukraine.
really enjoyed dressing them up last time, have some more. ramblings below.
none of this is historically accurate, and my research is limited by only the free materials that can be found online TT i'm very sorry for the inaccuracies TT
as always, men's clothes are soooo boring compared to women's. i tried picking the most embroidered ones for fun, but half of men's clothes in eastern/central europe are like "coat-type garment in brown/black/white with minimal decoration". also tried to draw kim the coolest jackets/coats i could find, sksdfdfkd.
probably, both of them are too old to be wearing something as flashy. if we look at them through the 19th century lense, societal norms expected them to be married and settled already, with that come more muted garments with less decorations.
though, it's probably somewhat in character for harry to be wearing something extravagant from when he was young, unable to let go of those days. and kim isn't exactly subtle with his historical cosplay jacket either. both of them are freaks.
estonian clothes are so well-organized and documented. i really liked the knitted mittens, socks and sashes, very beautiful!
slovak clothes are so cool! i'm too much of a coward for the detva crop tops, but harry would wear something like that 100%. also they have aprons for men. delightful.
and ukrainian clothes, the ones i know the most about.
women were expected to make clothes for their husbands. in general, embroidery was a very personalized thing, people would sometimes sew their initials and names somewhere on the garment.
so, imagine harry having clothes dora hand-made. with unique patterns that could be referencing, let's say, apricot flowers. that would be so fucked up!!
the actual plants commonly featured in embroidery patterns are roses, oak leaves, hops, grapes, viburnum, poppies and marigolds.
language barrier is, unfortunately, very real. my polish is mid enough for reading and i can understand slovak using the ✨slavic languages magic✨, but estonian? google translate did not want to cooperate. it kept translating something as "pussy belt" TT
in any case, feel free to send anything about folk clothing, i'll be very happy and thank you for reading!

i Adore your fake marriage ice and flame art!! I was wondering, what reference/insp did you use for their outfits??
hello i am SO sorry I'm so late to this unfortunately uni got in the way BUT here's an in depth thread on the costume design of this piece and all the little details and references you might have missed <3
starting off, I wanted it to feel like a wedding picture of two people from different cultures, and they're not only marrying each other but so are their aesthetics. the costumes are very distinctive while also being complementary to each other.
yennefer’s dress is very much Indian sari inspired, while jaskier’s main influence comes from the Detva region of Slovakia. I wanted these costumes to be clearly influenced by traditional clothing while being something they would also wear in universe.
yennefer’s gown while being inspired by traditional saris is also inspired by Yves Saint Laurent and Elsa Schiaparelli take’s on saris as well as this Simone Ashley's look (also the fabric is supposed to be a two-tone taffeta, so I hope that reads well enough)
jaskier's Detva inspired look works so perfectly in universe with his s1 doublets in my opinion. His costume is also inspired by other slavic folk clothing, for example his pants are mostly inspired by the polish mountain style clothing from the Zakopane region.
yennefer's also wearing alta dye on her fingers, which women adorn their fingers with for marriage ceremonies in the Bengali culture. The red dye also matches jaskier's red doublet and the dark blue flowers on jaskier's vest match yennefer's dress. like I mentioned before they're wearing wedding rings with gemstones that match each other's eye color <3 yennefer's wearing bangles, a maangtika and a nath, while jaskier's sporting the single pearl earring that I always draw him in and his other neckless are under his shirt
+ some process from the drawing !! (fun fact the first file that I found on this concept is from may 1st 2023 lmaoo) anyway I really really love it and I'm very proud of it, my fave yenskier piece to date <3
#also it's called a shard of ice and eternal flame because those are the names of the short stories that they're both#respectively the most prominent in !!#also sth sth opposites attract hihi#yennskier#yenskier#mersart#the witcher#jaskier#yennefer of vengerberg#maya answers stuff#long post#art analysis

Building off of a previous post, I've decided what nation the Mushroom Kingdom is parallel to in my 'verse: Slovakia. (The fact that my girlfriend is Slovak and I feel very passionately about promoting the nation to atone for the fact that I didn't know it even existed before I met her has only informed about 90% of this decision.)
Okay, but jokes aside, the Mushroom Kingdom is an idyllic, green little kingdom, with lots of rolling pastures and forests and hills/mountains. Most towns are quite small, and even larger towns, like the capital city of Toad Town, have that small-town feel to them. Lots of open-air markets and little shops and small businesses. Toad Town itself is located in the southern-central area of the kingdom, adjacent to the Banská Bystrica region.
As far as traditional dress goes, Central Slovak kroje tend to be extremely colorful, which you see reflected in the varied vests most Toads wear. They're often embroidered with simple patterns, but extravagant embroideries aren't unheard of. Peach's ceremonial traditional outfit is no different: big, puffy sleeves, bright pinks and blues and reds woven into her outfit, and plenty of mushroom reliefs as stand-in for the flower reliefs you see more IRL.
(In place of the ribbons of unmarried women and headdresses of married women, she wears a mushroom cap, which matches her kroj and the natural Toad caps. Larger headwear seems to be more common in Czech kroje than Slovak, buuuuuut this is Fantasy Slovakia, we can make exceptions.)
I like to think Peach gifts Mario with a folk-style belt or vest or something that he starts wearing to official events, and then when they get married, he gets his own full kroj. Now, kroje varies drastically from village to village, but some of the most well-known of Central Slovak kroje come from Detva, whose men's kroj looks like... this.
I'm caught firmly between "Let's draw inspiration from some other Central region like Liptov for the MK's traditional menswear" and "Sun's out, tum's out, Mario would fucking SLAY in this".
#this is significantly longer and more thorough than the other two so far because I'm way more familiar with slovak history and culture#and I don't have the fear of cultural misrepresentation weighing over me; if I get anything wrong I have a Literal Slovak here to tell me s#I intend to make similarly thorough posts for sarasaland and the beanbean kingdom! they'll both just need significantly more research#these may be fantasy parallels but they're still very real and very beautiful cultures and I don't wanna risk getting anything wrong#peaches has opinions#peaches’ illustrious lore
