Detective Noir AU

Alright, this au has been sitting around, waiting for me to finish it but chances are, I never will :((

So instead, I'll just post what I have so far

This was inspired by that one comment on the au post the author made(at this point you could consider me a stalker for the amount of hours I've scrolled through her feed💀)

First things first, none other than our main character himself, Detective Hollow!

I made him the detective in this one mainly because I was basing it off of the theory that if there was no heroine the keyholder would simply become the hero instead(don't remember where I read this but I'm guessing it was the webtoon comment section).

I also my have just really wanted to draw him in an overcoat

gonna be honest, I did little to no research going into this AU, the thing I most tried to learn about was the femme fatale so I could get a good view on how to design Buddy

Speaking of the femme fatale:

Seems like someone got caught in the spotlight!

And before you ask, yes, those are pants. Weird ones, but pants nonetheless. I swear, I hate lighting when it's from the front. Frontal lighting can go fuck itself. Please ignore the little help lines I put in

Honestly, Buddy's outfit was probably the hardest part of this one. I wanted him to look slutty, but I didn't want to make it TOO slutty, but I feel like I may have added WAYY too many folds in his pantsuit and I kinda messed up on the overcoat lol. The diamond on his chest was inspired by the diamond on the villainess key more than anything and I tried to incorporate that into his gloves too.

Anyway, have some potential outfit sketches I made:

the two I thought might come off as too slutty and

the ultimate winner of the outfit ideas

As you can see the diamond chest window and fur coat were a mut in this outfit and I'm pretty happy with the end result

Y'all know how the femme fatale usually has to seduce the main character a.k.a. the detective?

But I'm not done just yet!

Remember how I said that I made Chase the hero because of the lack of a heroine in the story? Well...

I did some more surface level research(and I mean very surface level) and decided to adapt the trope of the girl-next-door archetype for him!!

Don't think it suits him, since they usually just sit pretty and wait for the detective to notice them, but they do have badass roles once in a while and I live for those!!!

The one Chase has taken on doesn't though sadly :')

I decided to go with Charlie Hollow for this one because it sounded more like something the timid and 'pure'(yuck I know, but sadly film noir movies often prop up comparisons between the femme fatale and the girl-next-door, this being one of them) girl next door would have

Overall I tried to make this one as cutesy as possible because, why not lol

Lastly(I apologise, I made this in a rush because I was running out of motivation)

The distance between Buddy and the detective sure did close QUICK-

Originally I was planning on adding Deacon as a police officer and now that I think about it I could technically fit Prunella in here as well, but I just don't have any willpower left to keep this thing alive

My art blocks been acting up recently and I can't even pick up the pencil without immediately wanting to put it down :((

I wish I could have continued this and maybe I will someday, but until then this'll just stay in my drafts

I really can see him as a detective in some kind of noir movie, solving a murder case and saving you. But he is cold as ice of course, he won’t fall that easily for you. May be he��s drinking in some fancy bar or smoking in a dark alley.

It is time! I'm so excited to get the chance to go toe to toe with one of my all time favorite AU's in the @tmntaucompetition, Empyrean Weeping by @cupcakeslushie ! EW!Donnie is just a treasure that must be protected. Luckily Replica Donnie is willing to take him under his wing. Since the theme for this round of the competition is 1940's I just had to do them as a pair of a film noir styled Private Eyes with Replica as the seasoned sleuth and EW as his new, young upstart of a partner. Just saying they would probably make a good team!

Looking at his mark in the bright sunlight, he noticed for the first time that it wasn’t really black in the dull, non-glowing places. In direct sunlight, Charles could see that it was actually a deep, bottomless blue dotted with little flecks of white, like the night sky. Had it always been that way? Had he just never really looked at it in the light of day? Or was this new as well? Was his soulmate healing? Was that healing taking place in their soul reflected on Charles’ skin?

He felt tears pricking at the corners of his eyes.

On a bit of a Film Noir kick right now, so blame that

Imagine, if you will:

Danny, a private eye in Gotham, ever the hard boiled detective, sitting in his dark office, drinking coffee you could use to tar a roof. The office isn't in a good neighborhood but rent still ain't cheap. He's fixing to get a new case on his desk soon

Enter one Timothy Drake-Wayne, CEO of Wayne Enterprizes. He walked in shirt unbuttoned dangerously low in a suit sharp enough to cut yourself on and bags under his eyes to large to be counted as carry on. Mr. Drake has a job for him, one he wants to keep quite, and one important enough that he's willing to add a couple zeros to Danny's usual rate. This job is a dream come true... almost too good to be true...

or

Tim Drake aka Red Robin(yummm) needs plausible deniability on a case tied to his civilian identity and so hires a PI and lays down a trail of clues for him. All the while playing up the Noir tropes to flirt with the cute detective.

why doesn't he just take care of it as Red Robin? Shhhhh... the detective is cute and he's having too much fun playing the homme fatale

Bonus: Immediately after wrapping up Tim's case Kon walks into Danny's office dolled up in a vintage dress, period appropriate makeup done, all to play the part of the Femme Fatale and do the exact same thing Tim did. Does he know Tim literally just did that? Maybe, maybe not

so what if i redesigned my detective noir davey design

… slightly

notes and references below:

unlike kath, most of davey’s clothes were not obtained in 1926/1927 (davey’s of a different class so ofc he wouldn’t be able to afford the latest fashion)

he’s still somehow somewhat fashionable (ish)— he’s got wide cut trousers (indicative of the late 20s) and he wears a sweater vest (very popular, especially among young men)

his ima knitted the sweater vest for him (he’d bought one with pockets in and wore it until it literally fell apart, the one he wears was a birthday present)

sarah sewed the pockets onto the shirt he’s wearing (which i referenced from an advert from 1929, but we ignore my slight anachronisms) (she’s also sewed extra pockets into his coat)

the coat he’s wearing is a trench-style ulster coat (popularised in the early-mid 20s)— it was his father’s originally, and is not in the best shape. the lining is worn thin and patched over with some old shirts; there are patches on the elbows and a hole in one of the pockets; some of the seams have started to come undone; the lapels are worn thin from davey constantly rubbing them (stim!!)

it’s also slightly too big for him.

HOWEVER he loves his coat very very much, he likes the weight and texture of the fabric

he would be wearing suspenders over his shirt but i wanted to show the pockets and uh. forgot to draw them (oops)

he has so so many pockets to keep all the things

his shoes are boots!

his clothes are mostly hand-me-downs or were acquired secondhand, he hesitates to buy new clothes (why would he need new ones when he already has the ones he owns, unfamiliarity, texture, etc)

patches are corduroy (probably from some old trousers)

he does have a proper Suit for when he has to attend fancy events (usually because of kath)

.... well this noir Vaggie au edit got waaay out of hand ha ha!

self indulgent au lore under the cut bc WEEEE

Detective Vaggie finally got enough blackmail on Valentino for Charlie and Angel to pin him in a corner, but as Vaggie expected, Angel Dust ends up doing what almost every other Sinner has done after Vaggie hands the evidence over to them, and chooses to just accept Valentino’s renegotiated and seemingly better soul contract rather than break it and make a mortal enemy out of an Overlord

Of course the first thing Val does is force Angel Dust to destroy the evidence they’d used against him, just like every other Overlord Vaggie's worked against always has, leaving Angel at his mercy again

And also leaving Charlie devastated. She'd given Angel her promise of protection as soon to be crowned king of hell-

(long story) (Lucifer wanted to kill Vaggie for scarring Charlie a few years back and Charlie had to beat him up to stop him) (the Overlords, led by Velvette and the Vees, decided to flex their power by saying this invalidated Lucifer as king and made Charlie the new ruler of hell) (she reluctantly accepted because..)

-hoping it would be enough to counter any Overlord threat against Angel once he was free

Ironically though, Angel Dust having come to see her as a friend after all this and not wanting to put her in the line of fire ends up with him sticking with Val instead, who gloats about it, and tells Charlie to her face what he'll do to her friend and her pet P.I. if she (as soon to be king) doesn't back down and let the Vees do all the real running of hell (like they already have been)

Charlie the Pissed let's slip she's had enough of Val as she leaves his studio (both her and the studio being on fire)

No one takes her little threat seriously, except for Vaggie, who sees Charlie picking up and weighing Vaggie's spear in her hands when she thinks she's alone. Vaggie freaks out realizing Charlie is about to go do a murder

So Vaggie decides to break her own no-more-murder vow AGAIN for a girl AGAIN (last time was for Velvette) and she kills Valentino before Charlie can reach him, regaining her wings (kinda), absorbing his demonic energy (yuck), belatedly becoming one of the Vees like Velvette had once wanted (not in the way Velvette had wanted), and accepting all Val's soul contracts including Angel’s, which she breaks

She also breaks the truth of everything to Charlie on coronation day-

(maybe also breaking up with or getting dumped by her, even though they weren’t even dating)

-confessing to the murder and her exorcist past

Now that she’s an Overlord and Charlie’s about to be King of Hell, anything publicly personal between them (like Vaggie staying the basement of Charlie's abandoned hotel instead of sleeping in an alleyway next to a dumpster every night) would throw the other Overlords into a rage over the power imbalance with normal sinners caught in the crossfire or getting used as canon fodder, something neither Vaggie or Charlie can stomach

Besides which Vaggie feels 0% worthy of Charlie anymore after breaking her no-murder vow, and Charlie is feeling more things than she knows how to name about that and the exorcist thing, none of them good

Their last kiss (for now) leaves claw marks on Vaggie’s face to match the scar she gave Charlie all those years ago-

(which Charlie has finally also confessed to her about, to Vaggie's horror, Vaggie having blotted the memory out after binge drinking with Husk the following week)

-the scar from when Vaggie happened to still be holding her spear as Charlie reached out to help her, and ended up lashing out instead of flinching back, unintentionally driving away Charlie and their happy life together

(this shit luck is what pinged Overlord Husk's gambling powers and led him to Vaggie, meanwhile Angel dropped a paying client to go check on the random demon chick- Charlie- soon to be nicknamed Apple Slice by him- holding her bleeding face in her hands as she stumbled down the street in a daze)

Charlie and Vaggie made do with other friends when what they both most needed was each other

They’ve both been miserable and lonely since then, had only just started to build up what they should have had together all along while camping out at the old hotel working on Angel's case together, but the case is done and now…. this

This is NOT a good timeline for them (yet)

i am sorry to hear that you are or were goo (unless that is a good then, then i am not sorry)

i also was leaning towards the 1920s (great gatsby vibes medda larkin speakeasy vibes etcetera etcetera. you described it more eloquently than i could wbwbw) (i only considered the 40s because that's when noir began to spring up properly-- the big sleep and noir films becoming popular and all that jazz; and 30s is because uhhh spider-man noir). (my knowledge of noir is an illusion tbh-- i've seen a couple movies and read a couple raymond chandler books and spider-man noir and i know of the stock characters and tropes but other than that its all vibes! we love vibes)

re: katherine: YEAH!!

twould be really funny if davey never interacted with her as a reporter (only knows the journalist as katherine plumber or maybe even kit plumber if she so desired)(distance herself even more from her father) and as such knows her as katherine pulitzer, heiress and frequent client.

meanwhile, jack has only ever been introduced to her as katherine/kit plumber, and has no idea she's an heiress of any sort (i feel this katherine has more street smarts than musical katherine, and has separate clothes for her work and for her heiress business) so if and when davey and jack interact they think its such a coincidence that jack's friend and davey's client both were interested in the same case. (maybe they even met that way but idk lol)

and if im being honest,,, i really think youd know better than me tbh. i dabble in noir and old movies but you seem to be the more knowledgeable of us on the subject. for the au hybrid game i leaned towards 20s. roaring 20s baby ya got the speakeasys and prohibition and all that criminal jazz that jack just seeps into like a second skin despite desperately wanting out of it - meanwhile daveys trying to keep his head above that criminal underbelly because the only way he believes he can succeed is by playing the hand hes dealt. but thats just me - im not too familiar w the 40s outside of gene kelly and hitchcock movies, and the 30s is a blank spot for me. like i said i really only dabble (but i do wanna get more into it so yknow. if anyone has any recs!)

as for katherine, yeah, wholeheartedly agree, shes a bit of both. the industry of journalism means nothing to her; its the purpose that counts. so if she stumbles across something big and all her higher-ups and bosses just tell her to drop it and forget about it like a good girl, shes not fucking doing that. shes going to davey and jack. separately, i assume; she has no idea that they might know each other at all, she's just casting a wide net on who might give her answers. but again - you'd know more than me fhshsb. hope this helps you in any way man :) your detective noir davey is my special lil guy forever. love that dude.
