Six Decades of Shelby performanceâfrom the first Shelby AC Cobra to todayâs Mustang Shelby GT500!
A bad heart forced Carroll Shelby, one of the top racing drivers of all time, to retire in 1960. But that didnât stop the lanky Texan from continuing to make history. He launched Shelby American in 1962 with the creation of the brilliant Ford-powered AC Cobra, soon to dominate both U.S. and international sports car racing. Shelbyâs winning ways soon led to Ford seeking Shelbyâs team of âhot roddersâ help to make the Ford GT program a success. It worked. Shelby and Ford soon stunned the motorsports world by winning Le Mans and dominating other venues from 1966 to 1969 with the GT40. Fifty-three years later the legendary first Le Mans win of 1966 would form the basis for the acclaimed filmFord Versus Ferrari. As if the Cobra, Daytona Coupe, and GT40 were not enough, this small team of hot rodders, fabricators, and race mechanics also created the Shelby Mustang GT350 in 1965, and the GT500 two years later. Shelby American was nothing short of lightning in a bottle from 1962-1970.
Shelby American 60 Years of High Performance covers all of these early triumphs, following the proceedings from a small shop in Venice, California, to sprawling digs at LAX all the while developing new road cars, running a top race team, and giving privateer racers the cars they needed to win. Get to know Shelby, as well as the innovators who surrounded him, including designer Peter Brock, genius engineer Phil Remington, âMr. GT350â Chuck Cantwell, and a roster of top drivers that included Ken Miles, Bob Bondurant, Dan Gurney, Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, and more.
Authors Colin Comer and Rick Kopec, leading Shelby historians, follow the Shelby story through Carrollâs post-Ford relationship with Dodge, including his roles in the giant-killing, pocket-rocket Shelby Charger, GLH (âGoes Like Hellâ), and GLH-S cars along with a slew of other Shelby-ized machines including his role in the birth and development of the menacing Dodge Viper.
Meet Colin Comer and have him sign a copy of this book at MCACN 2024!

Batman: The Brave & The Bold #3 Writers: Dennis Culver, Ed Brisson, Christopher Cantwell, Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing Artists: Otto Schmidt, Jeff Spokes, Javier RodrĂguez, Jorge Molina Color Artists: Pierluigi Casolino, Jeff Spokes, Javier RodrĂguez Letterers: Pat Brosseau, Saida Temofonte, Simon Bowland, Rob Leigh Review by Davydh Tidey Batman: The Brave & The Bold #3 brings another crop of Bat-goodness to our shelves! Continuing the stories of Stormwatch and Superman, giving us another monochrome Elseworlds Bat-tale, AND introducing a new villain to Batmanâs rogues' gallery?! Weâre spoiled, we really are. Batter Up Heh. Heart of a champion.â - Mr. Baseball This issue may have waved goodbye to Tom King and Mitch Gerads, but one hell of a team has come on board to replace them in the headline spot. Dennis Culver, Otto Schmidt, and Pierluigi Casolino take the reins and lead the charge in this issue, with their own unique new villain, Mr. Baseball. Delivering as interesting an origin story as you can get, "Mr. Baseball" tells the tale of a bank robbery gone wrong, amateur surgery, and running into the Bat for the first time. Thereâs nothing more to give, itâs perfect. I make no secret at all of my love for Dennis Culver's work, and once again he's managed to impress me. Taking a villain that sounds like he was a random pull from Cards Against Humanity, making him genuinely intimidating, and giving him a higher purpose, all without leaning into the very typical tropes of a Batman villain? Thatâs juggling a lot of balls at once (sorry). Luckily, Culver is an experienced juggler. Otto Schmidt, hot off of DC Vs. Vampires and joined by color artist Pierluigi Casolino delivers an impressive performance of violence and menace, and Iâm here for it. Mr. Baseball looks terrifying, Batman's as threatening as he needs to be and he moves like an absolute demon. The artwork delivers everything you would want from this type of story. [gallery columns="4" size="large" type="single-slider" ids="183199,183200,183201,183202"] Benched "Do not kill. Do not kill". So boring.â - Shado The intrigue continues to build in the third part of the Stormwatch section, with the team off on another mission to retrieve yet another powerful weapon⌠hmm⌠what could Director Bones possibly be up to? With Peacemaker-01 benched (see previous issue), the team's down one powerhouse and short-staffed for their mission. Of course, that wonât stop them from finding their target! Iâm really hoping that these stories are setting up an actual ongoing Stormwatch book from Ed Brisson and Jeff Spokes because Iâm loving these sections and the team of characters. Thereâs a unique feel to all this that I havenât felt in a team book for a while. It almost feels like the original Runaways series, due to the character interactions and relationships. Ravager's always an interesting character to have in any book, and sheâs being used really effectively here. As always, Jeff Spokesâ clean artwork is a pleasure to look at, and his character designs are on point. Shado hasnât looked so good since Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentinoâs Green Arrow! In The Ring Lucerna lucet tenebris!â - Hop Harrigan Supermanâs foray into journalism comes to an end! Having discovered the purpose of the decoder ring in the previous issue, The Man of Steel struggles against the mysterious force keeping his distant memory hostage... and he may end up losing more than he thought. This is an unusual story in that its resolution is⌠not resolved. I donât want to say too much, but the ending of the tale is an unusual way to finish, for sure. It's a really cool, unique idea, so huge props to the creative team for this. [gallery type="single-slider" columns="4" size="large" ids="183203,183204,183205,183198"] Once again, this retro tale made me smile multiple times. Christopher Cantwellâs whimsical story comes to a very satisfying (if not totally resolved) conclusion, and itâs been a hell of a flight. Still employing the framing device of Supermanâs notes from the field as narration, itâs cool to see the hero's internal monologue as a retelling, especially with how the story ends. Seriously, guys, the ending is genius. Javier RodrĂguez always delivers incredible art, but this story's definitely a standout for me. Fairly restrained in comparison to some of his wilder art (I keep mentioning Al Ewingâs Defenders, but honestly how could I not?), the work channels the Silver Age while still keeping things current and vibrant. It reminds me in places of the late Darwyn Cookeâs work, and that can never be a bad thing. I do hope the team returns to this story someday and gives a full resolution to the tale, but even if they donât Iâm more than happy. Home Run DRINK AND GROW CLOSER TO MY GLORY!" - Man-Bat Oh boy, itâs Castlevania... but also Batman, but of course! The mysterious Kirk Langstrom rules a Gotham City that's under permanent cover of night, with a cadre of like-minded individuals determined to oppress the common people. However, one man stands alone against the flood, one individual holds the line with his Bat-chain, taking the fight straight to Langstrom and his horde. One Bat-man. This story was a lot of fun. Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing haven't had a miss in recent memory, Iâve liked pretty much everything Iâve read by them, so seeing their names on a cover always draws me in. They have experience with Batman as well, writing Batman Beyond: Neo-Year as well as the current series, Batman Beyond Neo-Gothic, so having a story from them for Batman: The Brave & The Bold was a no-brainer. Jorge Molina turns in some very interesting artwork for this, fitting the aesthetic perfectly and giving readers the dark, gothic vibes the story needs. I loved the manga-esque style employed here, as it really made the story feel special. Conclusion Yet another strong entry into the Bat-verse, Batman: The Brave & The Bold #3 brings some interesting new perspectives on long-established characters. So far, this series has been a cut above the usual ongoing anthology titles, and it doesnât look like that will be changing any time soon. Images Courtesy of DC Entertainment (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Bubble bubble more earthquake trouble? Geoscientists study Alaskas Denali fault
âItâs a big, sweeping fault and the source of a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in 2002, that ruptured more than 200 miles of the Denali Fault, along with the Totschunda Fault to the east, causing significant damage to remote villages and central Alaskaâs infrastructure,â says Utah State University geochemist Dennis Newell. Understanding the restless faultâs mantle-to-crust connections provides critical information for understanding the lithospheric-scale faultâs seismic cycle, says Newell, associate professor in USUâs Department of Geosciences. He and colleagues Jeff Benowitz, an Alaska-based geochronologist, Sean Regan of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and doctoral candidate Coleman Hiett of USU, collected and analyzed helium and carbon isotopic data from springs along a nearly 250-mile segment of the fault and published their findings, âRoadblocks and Speed Limits: Mantle-to-Surface Volatile Flux in the Lithospheric Scale Denali Fault, Alaska,â in the June 1, 2023 print issue of the journal Geology. The research was funded by a one-year National Science Foundation Early-Concept Grant for Exploratory Research (EAGER) awarded to Newell and Regan in 2020. âActive strike-slip faults like Denali have three-dimensional geometries with possible deep conduit connections below the Earthâs surface,â Newell says. âBut we donât know much about how and if these connections are maintained.â To examine these possible deep connections, Newell and Regan sampled 12 springs along the Denali and Totschunda Faults, by way of helicopter and on foot, to the remote, mountainous regions of Alaskaâs interior. âHelium-3, a rare isotope of helium gas, in springs is a good indicator of whether or not an area has a connection to the Earthâs mantle,â Newell says. âWarm, bubbling springs west of the 2002 earthquake rupture, along the Cantwell segment of the Denali Fault, have a strong helium-3 signature, indicating intact connections to the mantle. In contrast, springs along the ruptured fault segment only have atmospheric gases, suggesting a âroadblockâ preventing the flow of mantle helium to the surface.â These observations, he says, have implications for how groundwater pathways along the fault are changed by earthquakes, and the timescales on which they heal. âThe last major earthquake on the Cantwell segment was 400 years ago, and the helium data suggest those mantel connections have been reestablished,â Newell says. âThese bubbling springs are indicative of the possibility of a future large destructive earthquake along the Denali Fault segment near Denali National Park, which receives some 600,000 visitors each summer.â The geoscientists also seek data on how fast helium can move from the mantle to the crust along active faults. âThatâs the âspeed limitâ part of our research,â Newell says. âThis is important as it reveals mantle-to-surface volatile flux and how fluid pressure gradients may impact fault strength and seismicity along the fault.â The faultâs mantle fluid flow rates fall in the range observed for the worldâs other major and active strike-slip faults that form plate boundaries, he says, including Californiaâs San Andreas Fault and Turkeyâs North Anatolian Fault Zone. These types of faults host large, devastating earthquakes, such as February 2023âs deadly earthquake on the East Anatolia Fault, which caused widespread destruction in Turkey and Syria. âQuantifying crust-to-mantle connections along major strike-slip faults is critical for understanding linkages between deep fluid flow, seismicity and fault healing,â Newell says.

TONY ARATA :: Changes ~ 6.8 | âCome on Homeâ (single)Â ~ 2.3 |Â âSure Thingâ (single) ~ 6.5
MCA/Noble Vision | MCA-5687
Mr. Arata must be a genius, because his LP titled Changes from 1985 masterfully predicts the mildly entertaining yet faceless pap that pollutes the country music airwaves in 2017. If you drop the needle on Changes and expect your belief system to be challenged or your life to be greatly altered from listening to the sounds contained on the disc, the likelihood of your soul filling with disappointment as the tonearm slowly creeps through the side B runout groove is significant. Off the bat, the listener notices the very out-of-place synthesizers that bubble up occasionally. One is supposed to sound like the horn of a car driven by Tony's free-spirited filly in "They Don't Make 'em Like That No More," an evocative opener. In the chorus of the title track, you'd swear that the iconic synth line that opens Journey's "Separate Ways" was lifted straight from that smash hit. Ignoring these musical offenses, Changes has aged pretty well, a fine wine of light country-rock. "Me and the Missus" is adorable with its 7th chords and chromatic walks up and down the boulevard, topped off with the cringey/cute line "Long as I don't lose 'er I'm no loser at all!" Changes doesn't contain too many snoozefest ballads, but its momentum is nearly killed off on the first side with "Same Old Story" into "You Bring It All Back to Me," a double shot of sappy mediocrity (although the chorus of the latter contains a resolution that is mighty purdy). The albumâs enjoyment factor is highest with uptempo ditties like "Sometime Love" and "Easier Said Than Done." I also enjoy the brevity of the project: it clocks in at just around a half hour, and "Easier Said Than Done" doesn't even fuss with a second verse and is over and done in 2 minutes. I wonder if Arata wore out a copy of My Aim Is True as he was learning to write songs. The spirit of the record and some of the vocals remind me a bit of EC. Make no mistake: Arata is no Costello when it comes to memorable lyrics, but Costello would be proud of "Nothing Beats Another Broken Heart," unthreatening on the surface but coldly bitter when you pay attention to it. The hidden gem of the album is âRollinâ,â buried on side two. Unlike the rest of the albumâs tracks, itâs not trying to be a radio hit, but thatâs what draws me in. The song is a reluctant journey through confusion and the problems of life as their sources change from youth to adulthood. The songâs slow pace and dark atmosphere augment the unease of the subject matter.
I have to imagine that a significant problem with the album, in commercial terms, was Arata's voice. He hits the notes just fine and is decent at projecting emotion, but his voice has an unconventional quality not found in country singers with just the right tone and delivery. Often, a song will lack a spark when sung by its songwriter but will soar in the hands of the right singer. I'm always fascinated to hear songwriters and sidemen attempt to carry an album as the primary performer, which may explain my interest in Changes. Tony Arata wrote "The Dance," which is an absolute knockout that was recorded and made very famous by a very popular country singer who probably owns several small countries. Evidently, the song was started around the time of Changes but wasn't completed until after the album's release. If it had been included on the album in an embryonic state, I wonder if it would have disappeared along with the album or if its later resurrection would have been inevitable. It certainly would have made the record a more sought-after item these days. Changes may be too safe for some, but it was produced with taste and it has its charm, especially with the backstory in mind.
The two singles that Tony released prior to Changes display an artist searching even harder for a voice and musical footing. Quite fluffy and rather forgettable, "Come on Home" sports soft-sounding Casio keys, gently strummed acoustics, and the tired chugging train country beat. It sure does chug but doesnât actually end up going anywhere. The chicken-pickin guitar solo in the break could have been churned out by one of a thousand Nashville cats. The flip, "Maybe I'm Over You," is a fascinating specimen. It opens and closes with some lush major 7th chords, but the song contains no build or memorable parts whatsoever. It's almost avant-garde in its hooklessness. I also think my 45 wasn't aligned properly at the pressing plant, because the final note during the fade contains a slow and subtle vibrato, only adding to its oddness. Luckily, the "Sure Thing" single is a major step forward. Again, Arata sings in a style not unlike EC, and although the backing track sounds like karaoke, the song drives convincingly and holds enough twists and turns in its chord progression to make it a winner. It should have ended up on Changes. On the B-side, "Enjoy the Ride" is mostly clichĂŠs barely saved by some neat Oak Ridge Boys-style backing vocals. The recorded output of Tony Arata reveals how a songwriter cut his teeth, and that's where most of its interest lies.

 Dennis Christensen is a Danish citizen who was living in Russia under a Russian residency permit. Christensen is a member of the Jehovahâs Witnesses. He was arrested in May of 2017 for delivering a sermon during a worship service in Orel that he was supposedly not a member of. Recently, he was sentenced to prison for 6 years for extremism. This relates to the Cantwell v. Connecticut case that was discussed in class. The two cases challenged the right to religious freedom and practice. Although the two cases had different outcomes, this shows how the US government differs from the Russian government in terms of religion. The Cantwell v. Connecticut case emphasized religious freedom in the US, whereas Christensenâs arrest exemplifies Russiaâs hostility towards the Christian denomination. Prior to Christensenâs arrest, Russia âbanned the Christian denomination as an extremist groupâ. This also relates to our discussion about whether Jehovahâs Witnesses should be considered Christian or not. According to the Russian government, they are Christian even though they have different foundational beliefs. Being that the Russian government is closely tied to the Russian Orthodox Church, I find it interesting that they consider Jehovahâs Witnesses, Christians. We had discussed that it is mostly Christians who claim that Jehovahâs Witnesses are not under the Christian denomination. This emphasizes how viewpoints on religion can differ from culture to culture. I find this important because this shows how lucky we are that we have the right to freedom of expression. I think it is also important because this shows at what point is religious freedom embarking on other peoplesâ freedoms. In both cases with Cantwell and Christensen, they were practicing their religion as well as putting other religions down. I feel like it is fine to express your religion however you would like, but you should not take away from the validity of other organizations.
