okay hear me out, I just had this idea as I was waking up: ace (or demi) wei wuxian who always make sexual and salacious joke/comments to compensate for the fact that he doesn't really get it. He will act as tho he absolutely understands everything and all, but inside believe that no one /really/feels like that, right? It is just an exaggeration that people make.

If wwx was demi, maybe he would have experienced some attraction with jc at some point. sure wwx is friendly with many people and goes along with everyone, but he isn't /close/ to everyone. He is a bit confused by those feelings, but assumes it is just some horny passing by like it will sometimes do.

Now imagine how lost and confused about all these feelings wwx must feel once he starts connecting more with lwj and actually being attracted to him.

the man went all his life not being close enough for this attraction to kick in (in younger years not really, then /there was/ jc, but it was weak, then he was dabbling in DC and shutting himself away from people, then he was dead).

So the First time in nearly forever he feels that and wwx is just really unsure what to do about it because /why does he feel like this?!?!/

Re: the prompt someone sent in for Wen!WWX AU a little while ago - Yu Zhenhong and Li Shuai are only Wei Wuxian's concubines in name. In truth, they are married to each other and very much in love; Wei Wuxian has had (and will have) no partners of any kind other than Lan Wangji.

One reason is that my version of WWX falls very close to the asexual side of the demi-ace spectrum, regardless of the AU he's in - but in this case, he's too conscious of the power dynamics between himself and the rest of the sect to have a relationship with anyone. He's also spying for the Sunshot alliance, so finding a partner outside his tiny circle of co-conspirators (aka, his childhood friends and family members) could lead to Wei Wuxian's true allegiances being exposed to Wen Ruohan.

Aside from all that, though, Wei Wuxian's ideals haven't changed much. He might have been raised very differently from canon!WWX, but he still dreams about finding his One True Love after the end of the war (if he survives it).

As far as headcanons and fanfic, sangcheng. I love them together. I'm obsessed with them. Still going over 3 years later, I've written more fic for them than for any other ship. At heart, it's the teenage friends to lovers aspect, but also that they each, on their own have gone through so much loss and pain and anger... including JC's anger at NHS for putting Jin Ling in danger, no, I never forget THAT. But I think after all that, they can understand each other better than most. They can understand the anger and pain and what you are willing to do for that.

And then if speaking strictly canon-based, there's chengxian, which is... everything that it is. Which is SO much. I don't write fic for it or seek it out, but I did very much go through the book reading JC as in love with WWX.

HIII, okay so as always, "coded" isn't really the right word since it implies authorial intent, but i often use it anyway bc who cares it's my blog. just know i don't think wwx is actually canonically supposed to be demi, it's just a headcanon from silly ol' me!

now, what makes wwx come off as SO incredibly acespec/demisexual for me is his approach to... well, relationships in his first life. he's a flirt! he likes teasing people! he likes watching them blush! he likes getting a reaction! but as lwj questions him in the xuanwu cave about, it all seems like very much a game to him, something he does without actual intention, unaware of the torment he might be putting others (lwj) through

i often see people say that wwx didn't date or that wangxian didnt get together in his first life because "they had other things going on" and "there was no time", but that's not only innacurate to post-sunshot, it genuinely comes off to me as if wwx simply has no romantic or sexual interest in anyone at all. granted, he has an eye for pretty things and people, and is VERY vocal about whenever he finds others beautiful. lwj is a common target, but far from the only one!

basically, for as loud as flirty as he can be, we know that's never really genuine. there's no second-intentions or desire in his words (hell, he had even been saving first first kiss for twenty years!!), even when it comes to lwj. and the way we know it is by comparing it all to how he acts, thinks and feels after he's ACTUALLY experiencing attraction for the first time!

but what does have to do with him being demi? and what makes, in my mind, wwx so much more demi coded than lwj for example, whose entire romantic arc is only falling in love with one person?

well, that would be that despite the way it's been romanticized, demisexuality has nothing to do with "only falling in love once". devotion isn't acespec exclusive, choosing to love a single person in your life isn't acespec exclusive. demisexuality is simply a term to describe the specific conditions a relationship might need for an asexual person to experience attraction. those conditions? a strong emotional bond (which is why so many demi ppl are described as "only being able to fall in love with your best friend")

and to me, that's what sells wwx as demisexual the most. he's had so many friends, classmates, xiongdi, and all sorts of companions in his life, but none of them were particularly... emotionally fulfilling. other than perhaps shijie, who he saw more like a mother and sister, there was no one else who he could truly lean on and trust, open up, and be vulnerable with. for many people, that's not a barrier that gets in the way of developing romantic or sexual interest in someone at all, and that's great!! (we see it with lwj himself, who spent so many of his teenage years frustrated for liking wwx and had to slowly realize why that wasn't shameful or a bad thing. lwj's attraction not only came before there was any significant bond between them, it directly blocked it from forming earlier due to lwj's constant avoidance of wwx!)

but for demi people, and for wei wuxian, it is a barrier. it's almost comical just how fast and deeply wwx fell in love with lwj once he opened up to him. it is the most visible in wwx's second life, but i do find there are inklings here and there to it in his first, especially after wwx and lwj get to spend some pleasant time together (ie. post-phoenix mountain and post-yiling date with a-yuan)

but it really does become the most obvious after the yi city arc (drunkji 2 my belovedddd). by that point, their friendship and closeness was already solid, and wwx is already crushing HARD, but isn't quite aware of it yet. it isn't until post-jinlitai stab (and his flashback to his and lwj's youth, how they fell apart and how lwj was only ever worried for him) that he starts pondering if these feelings might be... more than just fondness. and boy do i eat it UUUUUP

it wasn't until wei wuxian got that reassurance of trust and closeness that his feelings truly started to develop. i genuinely cannot imagine a wei wuxian who falls in love with someone who he genuinely believes hates him, and it's actually something i believe stopped wwx from developing deep feelings for lwj in his first life. we know how much all his rejections and their disagreements hurt wwx, and in the back of his mind, he always thought lwj disapproved of him, maybe even disliked him. there was no trust, and it smothered any small, warm little inkling of romantic love from sparking into a flame

so when wwx finds himself with a lwj who is indulgent, who wants to be close, who protects him, comforts him, listens to him, and won't ever let him fall... well, you can't blame him for daydreaming about a calm farm life by his side, or being embarrassed for acting so shameless while still pretending to be mxy, or wishing from the bottom of his heart that even if lwj doesn't love him back, he'll still stay next to him

he only ever wanted lwj to be his friend, and now he's the closest and most intimate one he's ever had. and he treats him so well... all the barriers have fallen, how could wei wuxian not fall too?

(and i didnt rly get into it but this all applies to physical attraction as well! wwx behaves and sees lwj's beauty through two different lenses in his first and second life, and wwx himself noticed the difference from when he could see lwj's nakedness back then without batting an eye VS now. it's hilarious, endearing, and EXTREMELY relatable!!)

People seem to forget that environment in which you grow up and your upbringing influence the way you see the world a lot. You can be a genius and still not understand and miss some things simply because you never encountered them before, they weren't really properly taught and explained. It's hard to connect the dots when you have no frame of reference.

Also Wei Wuxian truly fell in love with Lan Wangji only after his resurrection. Oh, he had feelings for him even before his death, but it wasn't yet love. It never got a chance to grow into love due to circumstances.

As for WWX sexuality. I think he is bi and perhaps even demi sexual. All of his flirting was never serious, it was just a game to him. There was nothing beyond surface level attraction. He truly fell in love only after forming a deep emotional bond after all, and only then became a horny gremlin on main.

wei wuxian being a free spirit doesn’t save him from a heteronormative upbringing, that’s why he can’t pinpoint his feelings towards lan wangji as attraction and desire to be a couple in his youth. he only manages to do that when he is opportunely exposed to the concept through mo xuanyu and that bit about inheriting his homosexuality is just wei wuxian being silly because as a character he doesn’t have the psychological tools to understand the repression caused by lack of exposure, on this essay i will

Nie Huaisang was born into a loving family and grew up pretty spoiled (partly because he was born too early and was a rather sickly boy his first few years). Despite that, his life wasn’t without demands and obligations, like his parents both being dead by the time he was eight. This left him to be raised by his half-brother Nie Mingjue.

Mingjue loved his brother above everything and were softer on him than many others would’ve been. Most would not have let a young sect heir spend most of their time on art and other frivolous activities, but Mingjue did. However, he did force Huaisang to train and study too, but maybe not fully as much as he should’ve. Despite training and studying being less than usually common, Huaisang did everything to avoid both. This is why Mingjue, thanks to his friendship with Lan Xichen, sent his little brother to study in Cloud Recesses before he was of age, 12 instead of 15. True to his lazy self, Huaisang failed his exams and ended up repeating his studies and in the end got to be there with his peers. That’s how he met Wei Wuxian and Jiang Wanyin, among others. This time, despite and influx of shenanigans, he passed the exams. partly due to his brother not being particularly happy with Huaisang constantly failing when he knew his brother is highly intelligent.

While still young, his brother died of qi deviation, like most Nie Sect Leaders do and Huaisang was forced to become Sect Leader himself. This was something he had never expected would happen. He expected his brother to get married and have kids. Now he’s suddenly alone and a sect leader. If it hadn’t been for finding out that his brother was deviously murdered, Huaisang would most likely have given up, died of stress and grief. Instead, he now has a very important goal to focus on: giving Jin Guangyao what he deserves.
